A Review of a Not Great Film Camera

The Olympus Pen EE is a half frame compact film camera that was released in 1961. It offers little in the sense of control but provides a pocket sized stylish system that sticks out in a crowd. Despite known shutter issues I was able to shoot through all 78(!) frames and had a decently fun time doing it. However I cannot in good conscience recommend this notably unreliable camera. I own a Olympus PEN EES-2. When I bought it initially it was a little worse for wear, but I took it to get repaired at Michael's Camera in Melbourne (R.I.P) where an old Japanese man supposedly repaired the old film cameras they had received and hasn't failed me since! As part of the repairs, they tightened the aperture ring which was loose and removed a resistor from the selenium meter to have it reading what it should. Since then it has played the role of accompanying me on trips where I am primarily shooting digital but want to have some fun film snaps on the side. Aside from me forgetting to adjust the zone focus at times, it has been a good companion.

I don’t remember the content of the video off the top of my head but the AE-1 and AE-1 Black bottoms have 2 holes for screws (missing the middle) and the power winder contact window is only wide enough for 2 unlike the Program and A-1 which has 4. The newly planned Lumo light meter was news to me. Looking at the site, it seems to be a "do it all" format: reflective, incident, flash and color temperature meter, all for less than $140 US. I wish I didn't have many meters of all sorts already, so I could justify buying one now. I've seen Reveni meters in the past as half tricky, half hype, and 100% uninteresting, but this one looks like a real deal in all the right places. Looking forward to the promised review. I'll probably sign up for the Kickstarter, just to have one as a replacement and penance paid for buying the horrible Gossen DigiSix when first launched (original; about $125 - a total screwing for a piece of junk)

I bought a used scanner for a couple hundred dollars. It has a native optical resolution of 9600dpi, which means I can generate a scanned image that is over 200 megapixels. You can't do that with a camera.

I’m glad I got my Epson V850 last year, at first I kind of regretted it because of the cost, but now it’s worth it. I had the camera scan set up, sold it after a roll. I am not into inverting images and color correcting them and all that which must be done with camera scans. If I had the money, the drum scanners are the goat. If tariffs are imposed I’m sure it will definitely have an impact on prices. On the B&H website, Ilford HP5 is now 1.00 more per a 36 exp roll than Kodak Tri-X. In December and early January the prices were a 5 cent difference. Honestly, I am willing to pay 100% for a roll of film. I love film photography and if I have to shoot less, so be it.

Well, that is a camera I bought and shot with. Didn't like it all. The selenium cell was exhausted. Didn't like that the camera does almost everything for you. Didin't like the half frame. 36 shots are plenty. I shoot black and white and develop at home, so I don't complain about film being expensive. After this camera I bought a Canon FTb. Something not mentioned in the video (though it is in the description) is the most defining feature of the camera - that it's a half-frame camera meaning that you get 72+ shots on a roll of film. This is what lends itself to shooting for the fun of it and not worrying about the quality. Granted, maybe for some the point of film is to be more slow, measured or deliberate. Sometimes, by just shooting, you really do get surprise photos which turn out great which you may not have otherwise. I love my EES-2 as a walk around/ documenting random stuff camera. As for the shutter, the leaf shutter was used in hundreds of millions of cameras, including the 11 million+ Olympus Trip 35's, so it can't be that bad.

I really like shooting with it, and mine looks a lot better with a nice brown leather replacing the leatherette. I looked for a while for a PEN EE-2, but after seeing so many that have a bad light cell I decided to just stick with what I have. I would LOVE a Pen F but, holy emulsion batman, they are expensive.

I have an Olympus Pen D3 that still somehow works. Every time I bring it out the most common comment I get from people who are familiar with film photography is "Wow, that thing still works?" I do like my version because it does have a focus tab to assist in zone focusing paired with a 32mm f1.7 lens. I think for half frame photography it is perfect, but I'm not the biggest half frame photographer. I've owned a Pen F prior and sold it because it was not the camera for me. 72 half frame shots are too much for me when I want to go out shooting.

@@RompingBronco It can truly be a slog to get through. It's great for like travel photography and wanting to be not weighed down and getting more bang for your buck. I bought the later version of this camera blind, and the shutter works, sort of. The shutter is a two speed cheapy (Same as the later Trip 35?), and the whole thing looks like it is made out of recycled tuna cans. My problem is that the auto exposure seems to work, but the shutter blades are stuck, so it "clicks" but does not open and close. There is a YT video on how to open and fix it, if I ever get around to it. The lens is better than you'd expect, probably because cameras were critically reviewed in published tests back then. A doggy lens as per a Mju/Stylus would have killed sales overnight.

I was searching for a cheap half frame camera and found this on eBay. Purchased after some research, I knew I was buying a mistery box. To my surprise, it worked and still work. Do I know that it could fail in any moment? Yes (for me the fear is more the selenium cell rather than shutter, but don't know much). Do I still love it? Yes. It is easy and exciting, is half frame and the roll is infinitely long. I have an EE-2, so I have zone focusing, and 9 out of 10 the focus is *almost* good. So fun with it. And have I already told it is cheap?

I think if you know what you’re getting into and saving some money then there is absolutely nothing wrong with it, as long as you’re having fun and making the most of it! Thanks for the comment and best of luck with the camera!

Run a roll of the 3iso colour mission through it and see how it compensates for the smaller frame size. I've got a Chaika Ii I want to run CMS20 through.

Did the 3iso end up releasing? Last I heard it was “almost done”

So somewhere in China the ERA production facilities must be sitting unused. ERA 100 was actually a good film and i think production ran from the 50`s until early this century.

I picked one up recently, Made in Japan. My only other film SLR was a Nikon EM (sold long time ago) so used to limitations.

I'd suggest most people start by looking at M42 bodies, they're probably the cheapest SLRs with a full range of lenses.
