What's the difference between a twarrel, scharrel and a kwarrel? How do you prevent your bike from getting stolen? What else should you know? The University of Amsterdam asked us to make a Survival Guide for all of their new students starting a life in Amsterdam as of this week. Here it is!

a guide on how to make sure your bike does NOT get stolen
1. buy an old bike
2. buy some weird color spraypaint bottles at Action (neon green and yellow for example)
3. paint your bike
4. buy a bike lock just in case and NEVER lock it on the front wheel but ALWAYS lock it on the frame and back wheel
now your bike is so ugly and easy recognizable that thieves aren't that interested anymore
and as a bonus you'll always be able to find your bike really easily
wait why the back wheel? i always do front wheel, frame, pole. that way they wont steal your front tire and the normale lock is holding the back. stealing the back tire is harder to steal as well so thats why the front wheel.
@@oceanman7868 oh yeah that might be better, I just chose the back wheel bc some people only put it on the front wheel and then they'll just steel your whole bike, except that wheel

What you need is a spray can with the ugliest brightest colour you can find.
@@iSkully99 Hehe, then your bike becomes both ugly and very easy to recognize. Thieves prefer a bike that is hard to recognize I assume so they don't get caught in case the owner recognizes it on the streets? Maybe rust and neon spray paint will do the job to keep your bike safe. I had a bright purple painted bike in amsterdam once, it got stolen anyways though :(
@@happycrusader8433 Well, in Amsterdam bikes get stolen upon request. Some people do ask for a 'low key' bike (aka a rusty one) so they know it wont get stolen.... but as long as people request for that... they WILL more likely get stolen :D Or did you mean something else?

I think I saw a friend of mine on the back of a bicycle (bagagedrager) in het Vondelpark. When you do not have a bike, you have to sit sometimes on a bagagedrager which is uncomfortable. Get used to it when you don’t have a OV chipkaart. 😉

Mistake number one: Studying in Amsterdam, when you can study in much better places such as Leiden, Wageningen and Delft.
You also left out that it's mandatory to go to the Maagdenhuis and then not leave and keeping people from coming. So if people shout: "Bezet het Maagdenhuis!", you'll know what to do

5:43 the guys in the boat are called 'kakkers', they often have just a little more money to spend and live near 'the randstad' (Amsterdam, Rotterdam, the Hague.) Kakkers kinda suck to be honest because they like to think they're a little cooler than the average dutchmen.

Stay at home. No visitors. If you really need to go outside, use a face mask and keep >1,5m distance. If >1,5m distance is hard, then go somewhere else where it is easy. Be quiet outside. No littering. No cycling in pedestrian streets or on sidewalks. Always be very polite. Best to not drink any alcohol at all.

The Republic of Amsterdam has two areas, with de Grachtengordel being the core. If you live there you have made it, if you live within de Ring you are trying to make it and if you live outside de Ring but within the Netherlands you live in de Provincie and you are a boerenpummel. If you live outside the Netherlands you live in de Wereld. So planet Earth can be divided in four areas, de Grachtengordel, de Ring, de Provincie and de Wereld. A true Amsterdammer will only leave de Ring to go to Schiphol to visit de Wereld.

Lesson one:
The Dutch will tolerate just about anything.
Provided of course it's not done to them or near them personally.
Lesson two:
Holland (never mind 'the Netherlands') is actually a bit more than just Amsterdam....
In fact, Amsterdam has precious little to do with the rest of the country - which, by and large, has to do with there being so few Dutch people actually living there anymore.
You'll find the same with for instance London (for Americans: that's in England) and Paris (France).

If you want it to be affordable dont go to the randstad (utrecht, amsterdam, rotterdam etc) other than that you are fine.

For frietjes you have to be in Belgium, the Netherlands don't have any good food culture, maybe bitterballen but thats all.
Stamppot, Broodje unox, and it has different names, my grandma called it poetjespap, warmed up milk with beschuit and cinnamon.. and frikandel/kroket/bitterballen, Stroopwafels, drop typically dutch food/sweets
