omg this happens on so many review and deep dive videos!!! the exact company that’s being discussed sticks an ad in like they’re trying to state their case. both infuriating and a little funny cuz the creator is probably getting a few cents from that ad.
The sad thing is the average consumer does not care. My MIL and SILs all purchase from temu and shein non-stop. My fiance told them about the child labour and all his mother said was "but I like my shirt" and he asked her if she'd be okay with us selling our artwork for £2 and she said "if you wanted to". These kind of people do not care about the labour, they do not care about the children involved, all they care about is buying cheap items.
… they *respectfully* don’t sound like very good/sensible or bright ppl… which actually might be the perfect description of the average consumer? Idk. (I’m now going to search whether there are actual differences in brain and behaviour between “average person/human” and “average consumer”, bc upon thinking abt it for three minutes, my hypothesis is that there might be!?…)
Yeah, my mama behaves the same. It's wild to me. She justifies it as giving gifts for her daughter and mostly 'just yarn', but though our interactions are fleeting, I still live in the same house and see all the other crap she gets, too. She's a bleeding bloody heart with anything else, but because she has a good experience with them - receives the parcel, looks vaguely like what she wants - she doesn't care about the forced labour, frequent work related deaths and awful environment, environmental hazards, sold information, toxic ingredients or the fact that she could legitimately be endangering her aforementioned very immune fragile daughter. It isn't as if she doesn't know or has access to better things with a bit of careful budgeting, either. It's only because I've threatened to burn things in front of her that she hasn't extended to impulse shopping under the the guise of spoiling our cats and dogs, too, because damned if I let them have anything from there.
Dude it's so creepy how the older generation that was all about saving the ozone is now just OK supporting forced labor, like how much lead was in their water growing up that they're ok with additional amounts?? 😅 some of them worry me lol
One of the conspiracy theories I'm definitely on board with is that TEMU is making their profit not with their products, but by selling the data of their buyers.
Hi. This is not a conspiracy. US Federal employees and military are not allowed to have Shein and Temu on US-owned devices for the same reason they are not allowed to have TikTok on them: the exorbitant data mining. They are also strongly discouraged from having them on personal devices. Does China care about YOU and YOUR data? No. But. There is real value in an adversarial country gathering and analyzing information about what motivates citizens at scale, what gets their attention, and makes them act. An adversary can stir chaos and collapse from within, no nukes required.
My mother is an immigrant who doesn't speak a lot of English. She got an Instagram Temu ad for these cute little instrument figurines (my sister and I both play various instruments), so she bought them as gifts, not knowing that Temu is a shady ass company. In the day or two after, she started getting huge fraudulent charges to her credit card, and by the time she realized what was going on, she was out sooooo much money. It was a nightmare to explain it all to the bank and get things sorted out. So yes I fully believe that even if they don't actively sell buyer data, at the very least they're irresponsible in their security.
They actually do! Last year a lot of German UA-camrs and news channels investigated temu and they have to give data to the Chinese government and they also sold some on black markets. Also the app collects data even when it is closed. In addition to that at least according to German law you are responsible if you buy something electrical like a hair straightener and it sets your house in fire because you are the importer on temu orders.
SHEIN and TEMU BOTH stole my photos (literally taken by ME wearing MY hair jewelry) They even ran ads using my photos to sell knock-offs of my product… did not take accountability and refused to compensate me despite my sales dropping drastically. It’s soooo expensive to sue… plus that money could be $ spent on product. 😢 it’s so frustrating 😔
you can file a DMCA claim to get the photos taken down from their site. You can also still send them a letter of demand for money. i can send u a template from a lawyer if u need one. sorry they did that to u
happened to me too :( im a cosplayer and a listing on alibaba uses a sc from one of my OLLLD tiktoks to promote their product, when i never even got it from them in the first place. ive been trying to get the image taken down for months cus i dont want my FACE plastered on ali😭
I am a part of the crochet community online, and one thing that rattles me to my core is that not only do these fast fashion brands steal some of my favourite fibre artists' designs, but crochet pieces can ONLY be handmade and CANNOT be constructed by machines. Therefore, every crochet garmet you see on one of these websites is made by someone who has had to put hours of labour into making the piece only to be paid back in cents. So PLEASE if you wish to buy crochet pieces buy from a creator who reasonably prices their items so they can be fairly compensated for their work and DO NOT buy crochet garmets from these places!!! (Or anything else)
Not exactly. They are using the term "crochet" but almost always if you look at the product it is not actually crocheted. Like you said, crochet is always hand made because a machine cannot crochet, at least yet. But in fashion, crochet is often used when really the garment is really knitted. Idk why they do this as it is misleading, and I'm sure temu is intentionally misleading people in this instance, but just for future reference, when buying clothing items from a company, crochet is almost always meaning knitted. You're only going to find true crochet from individual sellers online or a market or smthn because it's not profitable to a company to sell crochet, even if using forced labor it just simply takes too long.
A reason why I feel lucky that my mom crochets and is always happy to make things for me. Hopefully she'll get around to teaching me so I can make my own. I'd really love to make a granny square shawl or something similar.
Some people always act like if they were alive when slavery was a thing they’d be against it. But at the same time they buy from companies like these and try to justify it.
@@MPPG663forced labor is slave labor and no one is denying the horrors of chattel slavery (which is its own class of evil). Take your false equivalence and weak what about ism elsewhere Your comment reads like one of those bots designed to promote discord

shein doesn't just steal apparel designs and they've started stealing art designs like keychains and pins. stickyriceco never posts digital art so someone on shein's team literally traced her art line for line to reproduce and sell. between art theft and workers rights violations, these companies need to be shut down.
@@angelvu Tbf they likely used image trace in Illustrator (or similar), so it could really be just clicking one button. 😔 You can tell from the stickyriceco copy that there's a bunch of details missing (ears, highlights, line color variation) which is pretty common for image trace to miss if you don't edit the settings and the colors are close
im a planner girl and i just saw A BUNCH of stickers on there that are usually on etsy and im FLABBERGASTED. I reached out to the artists and linked them because they are going TOO FAR. LIKE REALLY?
LOOK AT THEIR NEW LINES OF CUSTOMIZABLE ITEMS the fine print claims they get copyright of your images to give you zero royalties for sales. Then Shein advertises many of these things like, "oh it's a keepsake so give us photos of your children!!" That might be an attempt to get less flak for theft?? I don't know, but it's horrifying what is in the fine print and this is new so I wanna spread this to everyone so they're all aware cause not everyone reads fine print
I already didn’t trust temu- but when I saw that video of the girl who’s croissant resin lamp turned out to be a REAL croissant covered in resin I lost all hope.
The original croissant lamp is literal art by Yukiko Morita, a former baker. So the croissant is made of real bread with antibacterial coating. They are really beautiful. I have one and also got one for a friend. It’s so sad that they’re trying to sell a knockoff of something so special.
Hey! I was the artist you mentioned at 9:15, thank you for bringing attention to the unethical actions of Shein. As an artist it’s upsetting to have your intellectual property stolen. But to be honest, I am WAY more upset about their unethical labour practices.
fun fact! temu actually cares so little they DIDN'T EVEN HIRE A VA FOR THEIR JINGLE! the voice singing in the ad shown here is actually a vocal synth named SOLARIA for the program Synthesizer V! She's a highly realistic sounding voicebank, which is why the audio sounds the way it does. So yeah - instead of paying a singer to sing their song, they either A) spent $100 to get the Synthesizer V software and SOLARIA, or B) literally paid ZERO DOLLARS by using the free trial version of Synthesizer V and the lower-quality LITE version of SOLARIA. I don't trust a company that spends so much on marketing slots yet cant even bother to hire an actual VA for their PRIMETIME SUPERBOWL COMMERCIAL While using vocal synthesis software isnt inherently bad (hell i make covers and originals myself!) I feel as though a massive company should be able to hire a singer for this.
It’s heartbreaking that Pinterest is now not only currupted with so many adds, but so many Temu and shein adds, that are ripping off small designers from the Pinterest platform that can’t afford copyright lawsuits
you can block pinterest ads at least on desktop with a combination of ad block and ghostery. my feed is fully posts now and there aren't too many weird gaps with that combo vs some others ive tried
The influencers gushing about Shein's very curated, very sanitized version of their working conditions and then telling people we are the ones being "fed a narrative". What are you talking about? You are literally on a PR tour. They aren't going to show you the factories that are terrible or let you talk to workers that are miserable. PR's whole job is to polish the turd and make you think it's amazing. Anyone who has ever worked a job that had some kind of oversight, whether it was government inspections or the owner popping by with his buddies, knows that day-to-day activities are very different than when you are trying to make a good impression for the brass.
@@defenderofmen11 I remember watching one of the videos when it happened and yeah you’re right it felt so fake. Or as you perfectly said, “sanitized.” It reminds me of that compiled video where about 20 newscasters were saying the same thing verbatim. It felt way too by the numbers and robotic.
my dad is horrible at using computers, can barely type or navigate the internet.... and then he discovered Temu. Now he constantly knocks on my door to show me the shirts he got on Temu and it's both adorable, and horrifying lol. I can't believe temu got my technologically inept father.
my mom was the same way when it came to technology, barley ever used her phone then got temu and now will actually order things like keychains, stickers etc for my family and there’s now an ongoing joke that any present we get from her is from temu lmao
That was my conservative mom with Amazon . She always parroted my dad’s talking points about quality and how nothing is made in America… but now she buys anything off Amazon and got really offended when I told her I don’t wear polyester. She keeps trying to give me stuff when she knows I have a plastic allergy lol
Bestie, my parents called me last week and asked if I knew “of Temu” and I said no, because my brain simply refused to connect my sweet boomer parents with Evil Fast Fashion Child Labor Conglomerate. They live in a third world country and my dad uses an ancient Nokia phone from like 2007. But they do have Facebook. And, consequently, conspiracy theories and poisoned shoes. Unrelated: Zuckerberg is my enemy.
I work at a financial institution, and I cannot tell you how much credit card fraud we source to those sites. If you use one of those sites, have a separate card only for that site, because it's going to be stolen.
i truly do not understand how people can use shein. Ethical and environmental issues aside, the website is an overstimulation nightmare, it’s basically impossible to navigate without being blasted with pop ups and ads, I don’t know how people can even make it to the checkout page without getting a migraine
I think its partially that they probably advertise to a lot of older people on Facebook who aren’t educated on how exploitative fast fashion is and how these types of sites are basically data harvesting scams bc they didn’t grow up with these things. No real excuse for younger consumers though as we know better
Also, their clothes smell weird. But one halter dress that was a very pretty orange, and actually looked very good on me, but I am not even mad that I left it at someone’s house, because the fabric was already breaking toward the bottom and it just smelled off, no matter how many times I washed it or how much it smells like my perfume and hair.
It might just be me but it kind of feels like D'Angelo is having fun with this channel lol, not to say that he doesn't have fun with his long form videos or anything I don't know him and can't speak on it, but these videos are so frequent and he always seems genuienly invested in the topics he's speaking about which makes it all feel even more engaging :D
I think he said in one of those videos that for now he's having a lot of fun with it! (He ofcourse stepped away for a bit because he didn't enjoy making videos anymore, so this amount of videos and the fun he is having is really awesome for him and for us 😁)
I worked at The UPS Store and we got a tremendous amount of Temu & SHEIN returns. Every now & then (when it was a customer I’ve built a rapport with), I would ask the customer why they would shop there if they’re here almost daily with a huge haul of returns. The response was, “well it’s just so cheap. Of course I would try.” To be fair she said she kept about 50% of her buys. This was at the height of many speaking out about forced labor laws & potential child labor, etc. I asked a few customers about it & they put it simply, “Well, I don’t know if it’s true or not. Either way it’s cheap, why wouldn’t I buy it? It’s already made. The disregard of it all, including them actively expressing their demand will keep this perpetual alleged forced/child labor machine going. It was hard to bite my tongue when the many many other people came in still “supporting these companies.” Even though I just notice the returns, I still see that they’re obviously constantly still shopping from them.
Oh man I don't know if you're vegetarian but we get that ALL THE TIME, like even when we didn't ask??? People just see me, realize they're eating meat, and feel compelled to try to justify themselves in the moment. "Well this is already dead, might as well eat it" they say... of the product they purchased from a manufacturer who is going to take their money and put it right back into raising and killing more animals. It's maddening.
@@gnocchidokey Haha funny you say this. I am very, Live & Let Live since I understand we all have our beliefs, wants & needs. So I try my best. I don’t flaunt this around, not that I’m trying to keep it a secret but I also don’t try to preach. Hahah well enough of the preface; I’m vegan, so I too have had similar encounters. When I lived in Hollywood there were more vegans around so it was very normalized. But since I moved into a way more suburban area, I do get looks. None of my friends are vegan which is okay. So when we go out, I just ask where we’re going & look at the menu beforehand to try to pick it out. Although in spontaneous times, I wing it as much as possible. I just try not to seem so complicated. Even though my friends care & respect me, they do try to justify stuff sometimes & I remind them it’s okay. I like it better when we joke & they’ll pick on me or something. I like it when it’s more relaxed. I even take it to a whole new degree, even my clothing is all vegan. That has been quite the struggle because from my youth & so long thereafter I was always with leather jackets & leather boots. It’s a choice & I feel happy & comfortable here. If people like to talk about it without judgement that’s cool. But truly I do have my beliefs and like anyone with beliefs we feel it’s the right one, so I try to be respectful to them & hope they do the same for me. Haha well, enough about my life story, back to the very interesting thing that I focused on in your encounter.. “Well this is already dead, might as well eat it.” Not to be harsh but what about roadkill? … hmm annnnnnd people do die… Hahah extremes I know but with that mentality, it fits.
@@sabra.waffles I know I keep talking about my jobs. But a long time ago I worked at the movie theater & the film Looper came out. They had free Looper shirts for the first showing (while supplies last). And these were some UUUUUGGGLLYY shirts. They were a highlighter yellow shirt with the title LOOPER in pretty this font in black. That’s it. I thought, “Nobody is going to want this ugly thing” but since it was free, we went through both 100 count boxes so fast. When the showing finished I guess a guy just remembered me & said, “thanks again for the shirt, did you get one? Do workers get the free stuff too?” I responded in a non confrontational or rude way, “It’s an ugly color, just isn’t my thing. But I’m glad you like it.” He just responded, “Nah, it’s ugly. I might throw it out or clean something with it. But it’s free so why not take it right? My whole family got one.” And I see a group of 6-8 people walk out behind him with that blindingly bright yellow shirt on their shoulder. So yeah, free is free, so take it even if you’ll toss it. genuinely feels like a damn blessing to actually hear someone call out these companies for being awful. way too many people fight for their LIVES to defend these companies and justify their regular purchases frm them. i dont care if ur poor, i literally am on food stamps and have never purchased from them, be so fucking for real rn
I literally had somebody threaten to DOXX me on tiktok because she posted a video about buying shein clothes and I left a comment saying it's brain dead to support sweatshop labour . She immediately got so defensive instead of saying that she didn't know about how horrible the company was! The tiktok person said that they were poor so that's all they could afford, meanwhile she had tons of clothes in the background. I grew up poor (like couldn't afford cable tv poor) so thrift shops & secondhand clothes were the only way I got clothing growing up. It's perplexing that people just forget about those options as soon as Shien/Temu came on the scene.
@imjustagirl-x8h The amount of clothing waste the US produces that goes to thrift shops but is never sold is insanely huge. No, options are not decreasing. Also, buy better quality items for more money and use them for longer. I buy $100 like every 6-10 years (depending on how messed up they are) and wear those shoes every day. Well made clothing can actually last long enough for you to save up money to get more!
@calliope3237 wow looks like someone got upset lol but they were right about prices increasing. I grew up going to Goodwill, I loved it bc I could shop tons of options at once and my parents would be able to dress us all without breaking the bank. But goodwill is not what it used to be. Prices have changed considerably. There used to be textile tuesdays and other deals, those are gone now. The same shirts and jeans have doubled in price. Growing up I wouldn't see any clothes over $20 except maybe a wedding dress or a leather jacket, something really nice. Now all the pants are around $15 or more, same with the shirts. There's more clothes than ever before yet somehow less options. I'm aware that if you looked long enough you could find some quality piece or deals. That's not the point. Shopping at thrift stores isn't what it was 10-15 years ago, especially when wages havnt changed but prices for everything else have gone up. Not defending shien or temu at all, my family is still poor and they don't shop there either, you can be poor and still gaf, I'm just saying it's not the same anymore.
Charging unsustainably low prices was a tactic Walmart took when moving into small towns to force the local businesses to collapse. That walmart could survive as along as it needed to with the National grid feeding it money. Once it killed all competition, prices would bounce up to normal.
Idk how people fool themselves into thinking most factory labour isn’t mega exploitative. I worked at a small sized Canadian factory and we never had proper safety equipment or training and it’s pretty normal. The merchandise people buy usually comes at the cost of someone being paid Pennie’s compared to their boss. (Let’s see I was making minimum wage however my boss was charging 80$+ per order that used my print and art skills and labour and I did more orders a day than hours I worked….) this factory is specific to a lot of artist / influencer merch and you better believe I have printed and perfected so much art for consumption that I will never be credited for (love seeing UA-camrs say they ‘printed’ t shirts when really they paid a company - be transparent somebody actually did a lot of work on that print- but no pay high prices for cheap labour so you can act like you diy’d it cool). Factory work is so undervalued and underpaid it’s straight up disgusting - so I cannot imagine the horrors that go on in a SHEIN / Temu type beat.
@@Huokun9exactly. That’s why I can’t get with the “fast fashion” shaming because the people who typically use those sites can’t afford nicer stuff. And if they can, guess what they are made the same way. You’re not better than someone because you spent $40 on a sweatshirt made in the same sweatshop Temu gets there’s from. It’s virtue signaling. Especially when they have on nike or something. People say “thrift” but not everyone can find good clothes in thrift stores and the prices are getting ridiculous thanks to resellers. It’s honestly a privileged take.
What I hate the most is that they even ruined second-hand market. You cannot thrift anymore to tryband be sustainable or save money because shops are full of Shein!!!!! 😢

And to not say that before those brands to blow up, there was other brands that did what shein and other brands does. And everyone was quiet.
Companies like Temu also bypass the pretty decent safety rules we have here in Europe. So buying electrical products not only comes with knowing you're part of labor extortion, etc, but you also risk burning down your own house 🤷🏻
I firmly believe that if you're dumb enough to buy an electrical item from dropshippers then it's your own fault that your house burnt down. I thought of it as a psychologist preparing astronauts for space walks and coping with how weird moving in space feels, how not to have a breakdown when there is no floor/etc 🤔
@@Soulcrash3 This is a very interesting approach!!! As a kinesiology major, I feel like the sports psychology would also be hypothetically tied to remaining motivated to exercise in space because it needs to be done very differently than on Earth (due to the lack of gravity you can't do weightlifting exercises). Especially since if they don't exercise they rapidly begin to see muscle atrophy, bone density loss, and cardiovascular issues. That must be very difficult for gym bros in space 💅✨
@@crazyowlgirlcncowner this might be a weird question but the astronauts that are currently stuck on the iss are going to be ok on the muscle mass/bone density side? When I heard they might be stuck there until next year I immediately thought they would be super sick and skinny. I remember watching a video of an astronaut that had to be helped around when they got back to Earth because they were very frail from their time up there and I immediately felt dread when I made that connection.
@@Soulcrash3 Hmmm, I am not SUPER well-versed in space travel specifically (and especially because I haven't graduated yet) but in my biomechanics course we JUST talked about space exercise regimens in general. As far as I know, we have been able to develop ways to put stress on the bones and muscles though things like special treadmills and the use of resistance bands in a very controlled way. Making every move intentional so it targets what we intend it to. Now, what I do know is that even then, you still lose bone density and muscle mass as you age, and the astronauts aren't super young anymore. So their starting-off point in terms of bone density and all that already isn't as good as a young person's. And even with exercise, in space it's not possible to completely replicate the stress our bodies undergo with proper exercise on Earth. If they went with the exercise equipment I think they should be okay, but will still feel weak. Part of the weakness is just due to them not being used to gravity pulling on them anymore. Sorry, I hope that helped even just a little bit 🥲❤️
@@Soulcrash3 That's also very interesting. Unfortunately it also coincides with the title of a Sonic racing game so my hyperfixated mind thought of that first.
No no. That's not why fast fashion is a problem. Fast fashion is a problem not because it "overworks" employees, but because it literally exploits people in third world countries. Currently, China is not the worst place to work at. Yes there are bad places there but its no where near as bad as countries like Bangladesh. There are NO labor laws over there. Employees get paid a few cents PER GARMENT that they make and if they try to unionise, they can get locked in a room and beaten with the furniture and scissors(this happened to a woman i saw on a documentary). Also, in the cotton fields, workers use pesticides that are BANNED in european countries and are actively giving their children cancer, and since they sell the coton to the highest bidder to barely get a yearly livable wage, the child will just die because they cant afford to treat them. The water filtration facilities literally cant handle the amount of toxic waste in the water so a lot of pollution still ends up in the water. THATS why fast fashion is a problem. And those things i just talked about were for a company like H&M or Zara, imagine whats happening with Shein facilities?? Overwork is only a fraction of the problem.
SHEIN pays around 1p per couple dozen garments too, that was in one of the documentaries, and also a LOT of their cotton is sourced from Uyghur “reeducation camps”. Don’t know if they pay the Uyghurs anything either…
To fix this normal clothes at stores could be affordable. I own some because it’s all I could get at the time. Not justifying, just explaining. It comes from clothing stores being sooo expensive
@@Lightning_bugs there are stores that are affordable. Clothing stores come in all different price ranges. But given what it takes to make a garment, they should never be super cheap.
@@Lightning_bugs The problem currently is that they keep raising prices and making them overly expensive when they cost very little to make. They prioritise profit over anything else.
If anyone is interested in the dangers of the toxic chemicals used in clothing - especially in cheap clothing like that sold in Shein and Temu -, the recent book 'To Dye For' by Alden Wicker covers the topic.
Based on the behavior I’ve seen from independent yarn dyers over the years I’m also kinda concerned that there’s like a mad hatter type thing going on with the stuff they’re using to dye their yarn, like even the ones that are more into using the natural stuff
@@phoenixfritzinger9185 lol, being a natural dyer myself… there’s no crazy chemical used. But regardless, protective clothing, masks etc should always be used.
@@phoenixfritzinger9185 what do you mean faking their own deaths? I’m not sure what you’re on about. All I’m saying is, that in my experience with using natural dyes is that yes chemicals are used like alum or iron/copper mordants, calcium hydroxide etc and protective gear is needed just like any person making soap, make up, medicine, any industry/ profession that uses chemicals or powdered substance. If people are passing away, it could very well be because they are not protecting themselves or long and continuous exposure.
I did a project in the Federal Trade Commission and why they struggle taking down companies like Amazon, Shein and Temu. The articles I read discussed that international companies have different laws, rules, regulations, and policies and jurisdictions that make it for the US to intervene even when they want to. For Amazon, the FTC has it on its list due to it being a monopoly, but the poor organization is trying to take down hundreds of organizations. Just look at their website. And they are short staffed and over looked like every other company/organization out there. There is so much they can do at once. So after researching the FTC a little bit, I felt so bad for them because there is proof that they are trying to stop this, but with limited resources, time, and workers, there is only so much they can do. And it does not help that these companies use loopholes or have big fancy lawyers that can get them out of these situations they caused.
Not to act morally superior or anything but there is a good reason why I only shop second-hand from reputable brands. I recently got a $300 corset for $15 and it’s glorious. I also got my renfaire dress on Depop and altered it myself🤩🤩 Edit: I understand and think it’s important to state that it is hard to know what brand are reputable, depending on where you live or your income. I’m from smalltown Midwest ™️ and a lot of the people here wear shein and Temu, because it’s what they know is popular. They don’t necessarily understand how unethical and crappy these brands are. A lot of people where I live are still under the impression that F21 and Francesca’s aren’t fast fashion. Finding reputable brands also takes a lot of time, research, and effort that many people do not have. Like, I can understand why my single-parent coworkers who work fulltime wear shein. They literally just don’t have enough hours in the day to find ethical brands, so they go for what is popular. I’ve been blessed with enough time and critical thinking skills to question the ethics of fast fashion brands. I’ve been blessed with resources to research what brands are actually ethical and worth the money. Until more people have the privilege of time and money, I fear that things like forced labor will only get worse.
Well on top of buying thrift it helps with textile waste, which is a whole other can of worms that was not covered in this video. It’s SO bad especially with any fast fashion company and how often synthetic fabrics are used which don’t last as long and take years to decompose. I’m not going to pretend I never buy fast fashion, but I have been way better throughout the years after getting rid of so many clothes and realizing how wasteful it is for my wallet and the environment. If I need to finish an outfit for something I already have or I REALLY want something is only when I’ll let myself buy it after looking at what I can find from thrifting. And I never buy from SHEIN or anything like that. The one time I did it all was terrible quality and smells like chemicals. I’ll stick to Zara or f21

Like finding cool higher quality items at a thrift store is the move if you want a less minimalist home.
unfortunately the thrift shops tend to be more of a garbage dump lately, filled with shein as well. all the actually valuable/interesting stuff gets sold elsewhere like ebay.
The other day I got a tiktok of a girl getting a croissant lamp from Temu, only to find it covered by ants one day. It was literally an actual croissant, just covered in resin with a bulb inside it
That’s actually a rip-off of a product made by Yukiko Morita. The actual croissant lamp is also made of real bread, but has an antibacterial coating that prevents molding and bugs. It’s such a shame that people are being introduced to the rip-off first because the actual product is actually really cute and creative.
@m.i7211 that's actually so cool, you're right it is a shame about it being known now for its cheap knock off. It reminds me of all the talented artists who had shein copy their work and sell it cheap :/
I'm glad you mentioned how much Temu was advertising. I remember for about a week or two, every single video i clicked on on UA-cam played a Temu ad. The ads in between videos while scrolling? Temu. Ad break? Temu. It was inescapable. It felt like I was in a time loop or a dystopian novel where Temu owned everything and everyone
the saddest part is that temu and shein make it easier to shop cheap AND trendy, which is why a lot of people don’t care about them being unethical because thrifting/buying secondhand often can’t provide both. not to mention thrift stores are increasingly flooded with shein items now :/ and it’s so sad that inflation has gone up so much that people can’t afford to buy ethnically made clothes because they can barely afford basic necessities like food and rent. these companies know this and prey on consumers!!
even crazier is how Forever21 and Shein struck a partnership deal where they jointly own parts of each other's companies, with Shein owning about a third of F21's operator.
@@Afrogirrl that's the point, there isn't one. relying on cheap and slave labour is what keeps prices cheap. paying for clothes made by people who earn a proper wage is expensive.
if something's so cheap you can buy it for a few dollars, that means someone down the line is paying for the rest unwittingly also: gets 3 temu ads on this video alone
I like how in the temu ad the boy is trying to fix his skateboard which would work If she let him finish, but no, the lady just buys him a new skateboard for $9.99
9:48 I feel like all the people that SHEIN ripped off from should get together for a class action suit, sue them over multiple countries even. Little lawsuits here and there won't do much but if everyone who's been stolen from collectively hits them, that might make them change (or it'll bankrupt them 🤞🏻)
As an employee of OnTrac (who both companies use to ship their packages) I can verify they are both still coming through, with the packaging getting cheaper and more indistinguishable from the other. High volume, cheap shipping, all fast fashion/polymer cookie cutter objects.
unfortunately even though both companies are absolutely deplorable in virtually every way, everyone ive ever talked to who frequents these shops just does not care. the mid 30's to mid 50's age group is, for the most part, set on "yeah those issues are bad but everyone's doing it". of course there are younger people who have this mindset as well, but ive met far more middle-aged folks who have just decided to stop caring entirely, even when other people are at risk or even themselves are at risk.
It seems like there's no escaping it, might be part of it. Because I know if I really want to care I have to stop shopping at Amazon and pretty much everywhere in town. It's not feasible for me. And I need Amazon, we're in a toxic relationship lol. I can't leave my home many days and the way Intelecom now picks up returns saves me all the time. So through this process I'm also trying to unlearn my shopping addiction because I can make impulse buys and return them and try to learn from it. It's difficult to navigate shit right now. 😢
It's infiltrated Gen Z, too. My 20 year old sister shops Shein frequently despite me telling her all about how shitty the company is, and I had to stop watching some UA-camrs my age (21) because they always purchased items from Shein or AliExpress in their room decoration/makeover videos, and I just couldn't comfortably support people like that. Some people just don't care.
@@hnichole Same. Some of my age mates in school (who are about 17-19) are constantly buying from shein and hearing talk about it so positively all the time is disheartening.
I love when people call out fast fashion and explain the details of how horrendous it is in so many ways. Thank you for this video, D’Angelo. I hope people stop buying it and the laws for producing and selling it change soon.
These companies are disgusting, we should not be putting our own hardworking money just to put ourselves and the workers in danger including the fact that they blatantly steal art from artists. Thank you for speaking up to make a change to stop companies like these!
The live action Temu ad is particularly wild. At one point, they open a package and a happy factory full of Temu workers hand over a lovingly made product.
btw, these Temu vendors sale thru amazon so yes. I bought a table from Temu and I got a message from them saying that it will come thru amazon since they have local warehouses.
To be fair, the ‘go in with low prices to capture market with a view of then raising prices’ is exactly what Uber & co have been doing for years, backed by massive venture capital funding, and at the expense of proper public transport and worker rights
I ordered from Temu exactly 1 time. I feel like this is going to sound like I made this up but I did not. And I have a picture. I found a lego figurine of chewbaca in the bag, not wrapped in anything other than the outer packaging that held all the items I ordered, which were individually wrapped themselves. Something about it just made me feel so guilty. I never ordered from there again. It could've just been a weird fluke, and not child labor, however with the context of what you hear about these brands, I won't take the risk. It's not worth saving money on these cheap items if it means the suffering of other humans.
My take is that this is what you get when you create a system that makes it easy to rip everyone off without consequences. It's just naturally the outcome.
i just noticed the crocheted bunny in the background with a matching sweater vest and cap. I'm just going to assume you are also wearing matching brown drawstring pants
Never shopped there (and never will), but I get Temu ads on nearly every yt vid I watch. Including this one 😅 Also, a Norwegian news site/broadcasting company recently had some items from them tested, and some had toxic substances. A pair of ear rings contained cadmium 😬
There was a SHEIN documentary that found something like 90ppm lead in a child’s raincoat. The legal limit in leaded paint is 90ppm, but in the UK (where the test was done) the limit is lower and also highly advised to not have ANY LEAD because holy HECK we shouldn’t have ANY leaded paint in current year!!!
These manufacturers aren't just providing products to those two companies, and even though the super-low prices and lack of interest in making a profit are highlighting the main problem with Shein and Temu, remember that if things are super inexpensive for what they seem to be, there's probably someone being forced to make it somewhere for less than nothing.
Both companies have been connected to the forced labor in the Xinjiang region of the Uyghur people, many of whom are in "re-education camps". So yeah. I will never buy from them.
This channel is easily becoming one of the things I look forward to everyday. I think we can all agree that we appreciate the daily uploads, just don't overwork yourself king :D
The thing that infuriates me about people justifying Shein purchases is that Shein is _literally the worst of the worst_ I understand needing somewhere to buy inexpensive clothing, especially because many fast fashion brands feature larger size rangers than msot ethical brands, but there are so many other lesser evils to choose from I will never be able to convince anyone to stop buying fast fashion, the quality issues and labour practices are inescapable, but I'm horrified by how much people go out of their way to defend Shein specifically I could make other points about wealthy influencers doing large hauls or how cheap jewellery and stolen artwork isn't defendable as necessary clothing, but I genuinely don't understand how a single person can justify buying from Shein I know most of the people in the comments will share a similar viewpoint, but I just needed somewhere to vent my frustrations. Edit: _also_ (because I'm still annoyed) so many people sell Shein clothing on second hand sites, usually close to the original price. Even if your clothes _have_ to be from Shein because of sizing or pricing or any other personal justification, at the very least you could buy it second hand (often new) and avoid giving Shein money directly thus contributing to the supply and demand they thrive on
I have tried to have the conversation with people where I live that the items, especially clothes, have been made out of toxic chemicals and most honestly just reply with "I just wash them before use" Fml 😅😅😅😅😅😅
@@Huokun9 oh how I have tried, and also that if the chemicals are IN the materials used to make the garment, washing them won't change the material the garment is made out of! 🫠
I hear so much about TEMU and SHEIN. They’re always being advertised to me, even though I haven’t so much as searched them up recently. I’ve never purchased anything from them, either, but their tacky fashion visuals continue to stalk me. 😂 Let ‘em fight!
Heyyy don’t glaze target. Target fast fashion all the way too. They not exempt from those production practices… they just got different marketing and consumers.
Thankfully instead of shein or temu I only got the depop ad that ruined one of doja cats songs for me. I hate when corporations get their grubby little hands on music I like, I dont want to think about corporate greed while I'm going through my Spotify playlist leave me ALONE
I am not a supporter or thrilled with fast fashion. BUT as a plus sized women, like the creator you highlighted in the start of your video, we are severely underserved by the fashion industry. I cannot walk just into a mall to go shopping because odds are out of 100 stores I am lucky if there are two that carry a size 26w. Yes there are online options, but they are still a fraction of what is available to “mainstream” sizing. Shien would fall if people did not buy from them. Stop buying at the cheapest option is easy if you have money yet so many in the middle class or higher still buy from these type of sites out of the pershing of a deal. So how do you tell those with financial challenges to spend more? Some may consider the ethical concerns but many are just focused on providing for their family. The only way to completely stop the worse abuses of Shein and Temu is to ban any product from entering the USA that does not meet certain requirements. That means new laws and an gov agency staffed enough to monitor/investigate which means more money on the consumer. It would bring manufacturing back to the US as the loss of the cost advantage and risk of buying from countries like China would change corporate practices. This would also raise costs. This would affect so many retails that many deem safe. I have found so many products from Urban Outfitters, H&M, restoration Hardware, Walmart, and Target (plus so many clothing retailers to name), selling products that are sold on both these sights. Not dupes but the exact item. Next time you are about to buy something online do a google picture of it. You will be shocked to see how many items can be purchased on one if these type of websites. Yesterday I found a dresser at Urban Outfitters for $540 sold at Temu for $125ish. It shipped from their US warehouse, which means it is a white box product sold by the manufacturer to various retail outlets via drop ship all over the US. Bottom line if as a culture we are willing to abandon our rampant consumerism and spend considerable more, and provide options for underserved communities, then these types of web sites can be banned in the US. But they will still have a worldwide reach until global poverty issues are addressed. Feels impossible, but it has to start somewhere.
Have you tried seeing if a Torrid is in your area? They are my go-to mall store for plus-size clothing. Highly recommend. They usually have some great options in their clearance section.
@@emilygreene6779 Thank you, I understand your are tryingt o be helpful. I know of the 10 chains in America that sell plus size clothing in brick and mortar locations. My point was it does not compare to the hundreds of stores that do not considering sadly we are over 25% of the population. The same issue exists online, which is why many shoppers of size gravitate to Shein or temu. Not saying it is right but just the reality of the situation.
i never felt more anger than getting a shein ad in the MIDDLE of this video

No, it's accurate, just in a different way: Get everything you want without any thoughts about ethics, other people and environment.
Maybe if you tell these people that their wardrobe looks like shit within the week, they might care
It's only because I've threatened to burn things in front of her that she hasn't extended to impulse shopping under the the guise of spoiling our cats and dogs, too, because damned if I let them have anything from there.
yeah my grandma is a temu warrior
Dude it's so creepy how the older generation that was all about saving the ozone is now just OK supporting forced labor, like how much lead was in their water growing up that they're ok with additional amounts?? 😅 some of them worry me lol
One of the conspiracy theories I'm definitely on board with is that TEMU is making their profit not with their products, but by selling the data of their buyers.
Thaaaat is interesting.
💯💯💯💯

(Or anything else)
wait that’s so sad i saw crochet stuffed toys on temu for as low as $3 ☹️
I crochet, too, and this is why I’m keeping my designs to myself. These companies are despicable.
I envy yall. 😂
I tried crotchet...I have two left hands, lol.
I'd really love to make a granny square shawl or something similar.

fun fact! temu actually cares so little they DIDN'T EVEN HIRE A VA FOR THEIR JINGLE!
the voice singing in the ad shown here is actually a vocal synth named SOLARIA for the program Synthesizer V!
I don't trust a company that spends so much on marketing slots yet cant even bother to hire an actual VA for their PRIMETIME SUPERBOWL COMMERCIAL

Cheap is cheap, “oh it’s only a few dollars, I don’t need it but I want to throw money away anyways.” I try not to be judgmental but here I am on my high horse!

genuinely feels like a damn blessing to actually hear someone call out these companies for being awful. way too many people fight for their LIVES to defend these companies and justify their regular purchases frm them. i dont care if ur poor, i literally am on food stamps and have never purchased from them, be so fucking for real rn
Thred up literally sells cheaper secondhand shein @imjustagirl-x8h
Same with Netflix. And Amazon. And Uber. Basically all the big companies do this so they can become monopolies and force everyone to buy their stuff.
Been doing research on this, do you have a source for your last statement about the prices going back up?/genuine :0
@@EntityArts23232 no, just my history teacher explaining it, sorry
Factory work is so undervalued and underpaid it’s straight up disgusting - so I cannot imagine the horrors that go on in a SHEIN / Temu type beat.
really makes me think what people were living through just 100 years ago in those factories.
yeah nike was world-renowned for their sweatshops (for example), idk how we collectively forgot that pretty much every factory is terrible
if your factory has su1cide nets in place outside of all the windows (shein)..... that speaks for itself

If your house burns down, at least you won’t catch the lead poisoning from the red clothes!!! 😂
I firmly believe that if you're dumb enough to buy an electrical item from dropshippers then it's your own fault that your house burnt down. Zero Gravity Sports Psychology seems like a very interesting class. I've always been fascinated by the psyche of Sonic the Hedgehog and Jet the Hawk.
Unfortunately it also coincides with the title of a Sonic racing game so my hyperfixated mind thought of that first.
the art and designer theft that shein and temu do remind me of how Hottopic ALSO blatantly steals designs from small artists to this very day.
A lot of fast fashion companies are guilty of it. Pisses me off, the artists rarely have any sort of recourse.
NOT HOT TOPIC TOO
"You're trying to kidnap what I've rightfully stolen!"
"You've committed one of the classic blunders! Never get involved in a sweatshop war in Asia!"
👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼

What 😮😵💫
If anyone is interested in the dangers of the toxic chemicals used in clothing - especially in cheap clothing like that sold in Shein and Temu -, the recent book 'To Dye For' by Alden Wicker covers the topic.
Thank You!
@@danicap9565 like why so many indie dyers end up faking their own deaths?
Like this has happened multiple times
Says a lot about why a lot of the Right decries Big Government: so the even Bigger Business can get away with anything they want
Not to act morally superior or anything but there is a good reason why I only shop second-hand from reputable brands. I recently got a $300 corset for $15 and it’s glorious. I also got my renfaire dress on Depop and altered it myself🤩🤩
Edit: I understand and think it’s important to state that it is hard to know what brand are reputable, depending on where you live or your income.
My local thrifts are overrun with SHEIN stuff and I like my clothes without extra lead

The thing that infuriates me about people justifying Shein purchases is that Shein is _literally the worst of the worst_
I understand needing somewhere to buy inexpensive clothing, especially because many fast fashion brands feature larger size rangers than msot ethical brands, but there are so many other lesser evils to choose from
I will never be able to convince anyone to stop buying fast fashion, the quality issues and labour practices are inescapable, but I'm horrified by how much people go out of their way to defend Shein specifically
I could make other points about wealthy influencers doing large hauls or how cheap jewellery and stolen artwork isn't defendable as necessary clothing, but I genuinely don't understand how a single person can justify buying from Shein
I know most of the people in the comments will share a similar viewpoint, but I just needed somewhere to vent my frustrations.
Edit: _also_ (because I'm still annoyed) so many people sell Shein clothing on second hand sites, usually close to the original price. Even if your clothes _have_ to be from Shein because of sizing or pricing or any other personal justification, at the very least you could buy it second hand (often new) and avoid giving Shein money directly thus contributing to the supply and demand they thrive on
I like the Tein and Shemu bit at the end; they are so interchangeable 😂
I have tried to have the conversation with people where I live that the items, especially clothes, have been made out of toxic chemicals and most honestly just reply with "I just wash them before use"
Fml
😅😅😅😅😅😅
tell em about how washing plastic clothes creates microplastics lol
@@Huokun9 oh how I have tried, and also that if the chemicals are IN the materials used to make the garment, washing them won't change the material the garment is made out of! 🫠
@@Huokun9you think theyll care about that? 😭
this is my mom 😭😭
@@emeraldsoda4059 probably not, but I try anyway.
I hear so much about TEMU and SHEIN. They’re always being advertised to me, even though I haven’t so much as searched them up recently. I’ve never purchased anything from them, either, but their tacky fashion visuals continue to stalk me. 😂
Let ‘em fight!
Got a SHEIN ad on this video and it felt actually dystopian
This feud feels like when the 2 worst bullies in school are fighting to become class president
I sell on depop and they can stop shoving the youtube ads down my throat every commercial break. I'm already there guys.
I got an Etsy ad as soon as the video finished and I almost screamed cuz’ I thought it was Temu 💀💀💀
Temu has ruined the color orange for me, I swear 😅 my brain has a firmly locked shortcut of 🟠=Temu
It’s the orange
@@AmandaDavis6130 and the white letters lol
@@AmandaDavis6130 it’s always the orange😔
that temu ad haunts my nightmares
4:37 IMMEDIATELY AFTER D’ANGELO SAID PROPAGANDA A SHEIN AD POPPED UP OMG

Someday, we will find ourselves drowning in these crappy throwaway clothes.
