Most people probably get the Lord of the Rings connection in this episode with mithril and dwarves but as a Tolkien nerd I want to give praise to Brennan's beautiful homage by explaining the connections. In middle earth the kingdom of Khazad-dum or Moria was founded by Durin the deathless near the beginning of time and inhabited from that point on by his ancestors, the Durin's Folk (why the factory is called Durinsons). The wealth of the dwarves came from mining of precious materials mainly mithril which, as Brennan explained, is an extremely lightweight but strong metal (the mithril factory). This continued for many millenia but the dwarves became too greedy for mithril and dug too deep until they awoke the dormant balrog, a demon of shadow and flame that wields a fiery whip (just like Gorthalax who the dwarves worried would awaken), that hid deep under the kingdom after its defeat in the first age. This left Moria mostly abandoned (like the factory) until the fellowship enters which we see in the books and movies and Gandalf battles the balrog, the whole passage where this happens Tolkien describes their travels as being accompanied by the 'Drums in the Deep' (referenced by Fig's drum solo needed to free Gorthalax). In awe of using an in-universe flashback to advice from a mentor character (especially Bill Seacaster, of all people) to remind players of how niche aspects of their character sheets interact with one another. Incredible bit of smooth DMing, definitely stealing that idea for my the next time I'm playing with newbies.
Beginning: Jump on table and break all bones in body. This episode: Jumps on a flaming golem falling into a pit of acid as a sea on is summoned with a sick drum beat and a motor bike is rode of the giant golem. SURE HAVE COME A LONG WAY
Something I like so much about his DM style is that he allows the players to do creative things, sometimes in the sacrifice of sticking to the rules of the game. So many DMs forget that the book explicitly states that the Dungeon Master can improvise and the point is to have fun.
Rewatching this makes me wish there was an animated show based solely on this campaign. Like one that basically follows the story to the tee and condenses it into 20-30 minute episodes.
Thank you so much for taking away the swear bleeps. Not that I had a huge need for uncensored language, it's just that the constant beeping was distracting and took me out of the experience a bit. Thank you so much, loving this. Brennan makes me want to be a more physical DM.

A demon. And a pirate. Are some of the MOST SUPPORTIVE PARENTS in this. Let that sink in
An archfiend and a "privateer". But close enough.
Don’t forget about gorgugs parents
Gilear seems like he’s trying
The anarchosocialists halflings are definitely up there on the list of best parents
you all forgot best mum - mrs gukgak the cop mom and that is unacceptable! :P
Brennan: *Drops plot bomb*
Also Brennan: if that makes sense.
I love how Fig is accidentally becoming an influence on Kirsten as time goes on lmao.
Soul sisters those two
I love how the most mutually beneficially, mutually respectful, still slightly (if not unavoidably) codependent relationship is between Fabian and his infernal motorcycle.
It’s more one way dependent I think. The motorcycle seems to desire a cool master more than anything, but Fabian is just happy to have a sick bike.

I so want a animated version of this adventure!!! I love it.
Yeah I was thinking the same thing watching this
They make comics on dropout, you’d think they’d make a comic of this too
same thing i was thinking!
I was thinking of a flash game based on this.
Someone at least should animate highlight clips from this
I would just like Siobhan to know that Adaine is really awesome and, as a person with Generalised Anxiety Disorder who suffers from panic attacks too, I think it's super cool that she manages to overcome that and kick ass and kill lunchladies. It makes me think that maybe I can ovvercome it and do that too (maybe not the killing people bit, but you get me). Xx

why would you want to overcome that
i have anxiety and i dont think i really need to ‘overcome’ anything, anxiety’s just something i deal with lol
Real quick, panic disorder makes panic attacks at random and have no known trigger. Anxiety from being overwhelmed causes very similar anxiety attacks. :) terminology can be helpful with doctors
"Just a dandy man and his infernal steed"
Greatest combat line ever
I love that throughout this whole story, Kristin’s entire arc has just been a spiritual journey, and she has almost no actual bond to the actual antagonists/story other than she’s helping her friends while figuring out her own shit.

THE WAY BRENNAN'S EXPRESSION CHANGED WHEN FIG ASKED IF HER DAD WASN'T AROUND BC HE WAS TRAPPED literally THEE most character actor OF our time
I've gotta say, a lot of groups that do dnd on social media make me uncomfortable because of the way they constantly treat female pc's and npc's (constant 'sexy' distract tactics, brothels all the damn time, etc). I've NEVER felt uncomfortable watching dimension 20. Thank you for making this a fun experience for everyone!
Right? This is so much more comfortable than crit role. Don't get me wrong, crit role has it's appeal but that stuff make me quit watching the first campaign
@@wreckitremy all of that pretty much disappears in campaign 2 and 3 now that Scanlan isn't a character anymore. I couldn't really get through campaign 1 either
@@catherineremaniak5633 oh I'm well aware. Ive seen all of campaigns 2 and I'm watching campaign 3. The references to campaign 1 in the current campaign is why I tried to watch 1 as much as I did. I quit it 3 times before finally refusing to watch anymore. But beyond that, campaign 2 is full of dick jokes, and campaign 3 still has creepy ads frequently.
@@wreckitremy honestly, the energy that Brennan brings to critical role is such a breath of fresh air.. the short that he dm-ed was absolutely gorgeous, brutal and tragic
and not a single off color brothel joke the whole way through! a must watch for fans of either show!!

THIS WAS THE MOST F***ING AWESOME D&D FIGHT EVER!!
I JUMPED FROM MY CHAIR HERE!
Seriously, just like Brennan said! (52:33) *"D&D is a fun game! Because sometimes people choose to do something cool and it's great!"*
This was great, but you've gotta watch the ones on Dropout. The newest episode is the craziest shit I've ever seen.
@@jordanfry5138 Course I will. Been waiting on the international release for months XD
@@rafaelcalmon2858 It's worth it, enjoy!
Sometimes you gotta improvise, my party once tied the dead parents of the BBEG to some boards and both the barbarian and the Fighter were using the corpse clubs as weapons, gave them an extra D6 of “emotional” dmg to each hit
@@KumaoftheForest That's not cool, that's fucked up.
Every episode there are such elaborate and expensive sets and figures. I can only imagine how much time goes into forging them, painting them, making sure it’s to scale, and everything is just perfect in time for each session. Go team Humor!
DerpyBerb theyre made by @richardhperry on instagram! his account is really cool there are some close ups and like progress pictures and stuff its all really neat

Can someone hit me with a Brennan "Rad!" count for this whole series so far?
At this point he has surpassed infinity
He said it as I read this. Cannot unhear.
also, plenty of "Baby"s.
A lot of "dope" as well
yeah or "my man"
In awe of using an in-universe flashback to advice from a mentor character (especially Bill Seacaster, of all people) to remind players of how niche aspects of their character sheets interact with one another. Incredible bit of smooth DMing, definitely stealing that idea for my the next time I'm playing with newbies.
The Vulture flying off feels like GM just solving a problem he never intended to cause by adding a vulture to the scene 😂
GM: makes it really clear from the beginning that this thing is unstable…
Party: let’s focus on the bird…
Flashbacks to the first episode when he said he hoped he hadn't said anything to make them think they needed to jump on the tables kkkkk
Beginning: Jump on table and break all bones in body.
This episode: Jumps on a flaming golem falling into a pit of acid as a sea on is summoned with a sick drum beat and a motor bike is rode of the giant golem. SURE HAVE COME A LONG WAY
i don’t care how evil zayn ends up being; the amount of tears that i will shed if that rat dies
Watch it The Ball. Lou's unfailing use of the nickname is the best part of this campaign by far
Something I like so much about his DM style is that he allows the players to do creative things, sometimes in the sacrifice of sticking to the rules of the game. So many DMs forget that the book explicitly states that the Dungeon Master can improvise and the point is to have fun.
Having Adaine make an arcana check to use the web spell in a way other than intended is World Class DMing. I'm gonna use that in my games from now on.
Rewatching this makes me wish there was an animated show based solely on this campaign. Like one that basically follows the story to the tee and condenses it into 20-30 minute episodes.
Bro I wonder if they would let us fans fund a full animated series of all the d20 adventures.
Thank you so much for taking away the swear bleeps. Not that I had a huge need for uncensored language, it's just that the constant beeping was distracting and took me out of the experience a bit. Thank you so much, loving this. Brennan makes me want to be a more physical DM.
Yeah, thanks! I wouldn't mind bleeps if they didn't sound so awful... Otherwise SUCH an amazing series!
A problem with it is that it was automatic cuz of youtube, so for example when Brennan said "Gonna" the first part sounds like the word gun, and the bot automatically bleeped it
Episode 2 " I rolled a 5 and failed to jump on a table" episode 8 "I rolled a 21 insight on why they were scared if fire"
Not enough people are talking about:
"They do it to themselves. They want it." *Woosh*
And Ally's "NOOOOOO"

That was a weirdly progressive demonic motorbike.
I honestly can’t tell if the Bike is into Adaine or he’s just a great wingman
Something I loved about this ep is that they fundamentally RPed to defeat the boss instead of just going "heh damage dies goes clank" on it. Love when that happens in DnD
Does Gorthalax have a more humanoid form or is he going to march into an ice cream shop looking like the demon from The Lord Of The Rings?
I can absolutely assure you he is going to go in there in his full giant fire demon form.
Um, actually the Balor was around before LoTR
I'm more worried about Fig's elf mom if this is his only form.
