It only occurs to me now that the reason Jawbone got the guidance counselor job was probably because Goldenhoard hates the students and wanted to fuck with them.
Imagine if Adaine became a werewolf in episode 6. A woman with panic attacks and dozens of emotional triggers who can turn into a monster dog. Oh dear.
A TEENAGER with panic attacks and dozens of emotional triggers who can turn into a monster dog. So a sea of hormones just dumped on top of all that other trauma and she can see the goddamn future.
There is a fanfic called Lunacy about exactly this. It’s really good. And also yeah, Adaine, especially at the beginning, has a horrible time. Her family treats her even worse because her parents and really most of Fallinel treats Werewolves as a plague and not people. Her transforming is also tied heavily to her emotional state, to the point of her transforming into wolf quite often when panicking or feeling anxious. The actual hybrid form is when she becomes very aggressive and then she loses pretty much all control. It goes right up to and past sophmore year, though junior year isn’t accounted anymore. The story is finished and I would recommend. (It is a bit long, fair warning)
Honestly though it's moments like that where I'm just like "oh fuck these characters are still children" her "my parents left me and I don't know where they are" kills me every time
Jawbone is an incredible example of my favorite kind of npc that I have both as a player and as a DM. He's just a random NPC who was supposed to have little to no impact on the story, he was a nameless enemy that they were meant to fight until he was given attention by the players. The players paid attention to him and through improvisation he becomes a full character with a name, arc and backstory. My favorite npc I ever used as a DM was a guard that the party interrogated in a dungeon. He was later recruited by the Rogue into a pirate crew, he bought a tavern that he ran and sent a little bit of money the party's way every time they were in town. One time, the party was in extreme danger at the end of a session and I ended up giving him this huge moment where he awakened latent dragons blood on his veins (he was adopted and never knew his biological parents) and he literally learned that he was descended from this ancient Dragon sage who had sealed Tiamat and that his blood was necessary for the enemy cult to acquire in order to break the seal on Tiamat. I later planned the rest of the campaign around finding other descendants of the sages (one for each metallic dragon color, this guy was Copper because it fit best with his personality). It's awesome where these random ass characters with zero planning can go and I always love to see them.
that sounds awesome!! yeah one of my favorite parts of being a dm is that no matter how much you plan, you can still be suprised by your own story thanks to the players and the dice!
Jawbone is the best example of a redemption arc in this world, second only to Ragh Barkrock and Aelwyn Abernant but Jawbone turning into not just a guidance counselor but a fantastic Step Father to Fig and Adoptive Father to Adaine
I recently finished watching Sophomore Year, and starting this video and being reminded that Jawbone is the werewolf that almost turned Adaine, makes their bond and relationship so much more important to me. What an arc between them.
I love Brennan and how he can be a kind DM and an absolute monster “Oh it’s to late for me to use my divination” “Hey. I haven’t told you the outcome so you still can. I’ll let you use it.” “Great” “Now which attack are you gonna use it on”
i still love the scene where fabian punches gorgug in front of jawbone, cause if you visualise it in your head it's like it's doing the classic sitcom thing of really hard zooms on each person's face as they're realising different things, then suddenly it's interrupted by fabian absolutely flooring him😂
Love when Brennan rewards the players for being kind and thinking of things he didn't think about (he probably had no idea they were going to care so much about Jawbone), it's part of the reason why I love Dimension 20 so much.
Jawbone is a perfect example of a nameless NPC who, through the actions of the players, was given a face, a name, and a bigger role in the narrative. Like, perfect example from a campaign I was in: We had this one guy who ran an odds and ends shop, real quasimodo lookin' fella, didn't really have a story to him beforehand, but when we all met and got to know him, he turned out to be this amazing person that we all just kind of accepted as our go-to merchant for all things weird and nifty. And his bigger role? Well, he ended up getting this little card case, yeah? We buy it, thinking "ooh, these will be fancy", and after some research/magical identification, it turned out that this thing was a fucking Deck of Many Things. Dude just had an artifact with him, and he thought it was a pretty deck of cards.
jawbone is honestly the sweetest, kindest character. he got his life together and made it his mission to make everyone else's life better. his immediate acceptance and love for everyone is honestly life goals. i love him SO MUCH
Jawbone is the most comforting character of the entire series. Truly made for all of us who have issues with older fraternal/paternal figures in our life.
I like to imagine that the only time Jawbone has ever yelled at Adaine was the prompacalypese moment. Not because he was angry, but because he was scared for Adaine and needed to let her know she wasn't alone
One of the things I noticed is that in the previous combat encounter, he named all the NPCs, even though they didn't roleplay with any of them The very next combat encounter, they pick a random NPC and make him one of the most beloved characters in the show? series? world? One of the most beloved characters from fantasy high

Jawbone really went from Johnny Hobo and the Freight Trains to Wingnut Dishwashers Union. Like he and the cubby's should meet. Jawbone: Worldliness and grit from depression, eventually gaining a new sense of hope. The Cubby's: consistent hatred of all hierarchies, including(but not limited to) police, the state, imperialism, and capitalism. Mad anarchist vibes.
Bud Cubby: "Fuck every cop who ever did his job! And fuck every bank that never got robbed! And fuck all the other banks, especially mine." Well in my experience there are 2. You have your regular counselor and your guidance one who yeah helps with jobs and stuff. Regular counselors again in my experience at least are for kids with an iep(learning disabilities) that help with therapy and coping methods. Most of the time optional. I’d imagine Brennan just clumped them together for simplicity’s sake.
Speaking from personal experience they don’t really do anything, boom roasted. But technically theyre supposed to be able to do most of the listed things.
His character IMMEDIATELY developed with the simple line of "i don't have health care!" Poor dude
