    Thank you for posting this. I may do this only once and never again, this is a lot cheaper than buying another router and bits. Thank you! 👏👏👏

    As a hobby builder, I see no reason to use power tools for binding. For me, the work in building the instrument is the goal. The final instrument is just a bonus.

    amazing! this is a good video and answered a question I had brewing "what did luthiers do before dremels and routers. One question Your using the same tool but essentially Abdfre you doing two cuts: One on the side and another on the top.?

    • @OBrienGuitars
      @OBrienGuitars  8 років тому

      +AmIonArock Thanks and yes. I am doing two different cuts.

  • @OBrienGuitars

    I don't see why it wouldn't work but why would you want to do it on a strat?

    How do you spell the name of the LMI binding scoring tool? “Gramel”? I can’t find it on their website.

    how do you know how deep in to go when cutting it out

    • @OBrienGuitars
      @OBrienGuitars  10 років тому +1

      Measure your bindings and purflings and then set up the tool to cut to that depth.

    It seems that LMI doesn't sell the Gramil tool anymore? just the blades

  • @Terpsfutbol09
    @Terpsfutbol09 10 років тому

    Robbie, can I forgo the grinding the other end of the blade into a scraper? What happens if you use the blade to score the sides?

    • @OBrienGuitars
      @OBrienGuitars  10 років тому

      The blade may want to wander a bit. I like the scraping technique on the side.

    Sorry, one more question, I am toying with then idea the top of a epiphany Les Paul Studio. I got all that amazing thick finish off. Down to real wood. I do not want to remove the neck. But its the neck that is in the way. I have tried to hatch this my head. But its a roadblock. Any idea's or advise?

      Can I bind my les paul without removing the neck?

    • @OBrienGuitars
      @OBrienGuitars  8 років тому

      +AmIonArock It would be easier if you removed the neck but yes I guess you could do it with the neck on.

    Where did you get that corner chisel? I can't find one like that.

    • @OBrienGuitars
      @OBrienGuitars  5 років тому

      I use a Gramil from LMI to score the channel and then just a regular chisel to remove the material.

    If you're good with chisels, I could see where this might be as fast as routing. No need to set up a fixture to hold the guitar body level and square.
    You weren't kidding when you said you were going to do a video about cutting binding channels by hand! I'm beginning to think there isn't anything that you won't try.

    “It really is as easy as it looks”. No people it really is not anywhere near as easy as it looks. Far from it.
