    After a few stressful tries with low-cost channel options on eight guitars, I finally decided to purchase the StewMac version and Colt router (like your older version in "guitar in an hour". A friend helped me to use his on my second guitar. Much better control and less cleanup with the channels i cut today... before seeing your post. I saw the Elevate model - nice! Thanks for the vids Chris and Matt!

    Can you please once the guitar is ready but not yet varnished or coated, set all strings and do a sound test and then once the guitar is completely finished so the same test to see the difference of sound between bare wood and coated wood finish.
    That would be so cool!!
    Probably never done before on video.

    • @DriftwoodGuitars
      @DriftwoodGuitars  2 роки тому

      Not really possible as you’d never want to glue on a bridge and drill holes for bridge pins and then have to removed the bridge and possibly cause damage to the top.

    • @briwood6328

    Why do you say Martin doesn't do Binding? On the website they state that the 000-28 Modern Deluxe for example has a European Flamed Maple Binding and a Bold Herringbone inlay.
    I have no idea about guitar building so please excuse if this is a dumb question.
    Anyways I really enjoy your video series, very interesting to watch as an enthusiastic guitar player. It's fascinating to see how much know how and skill goes into a handmade guitar.

    I wanted to mention that if you're cutting binding channels with a vertical sliding router jig with the guitar sitting in a cradle, it's important that your first cut should be the channel for the purfling. If you cut the binding channel first, the bearing can slip into that channel when cutting the purfling channel, making it too deep. I learned that the hard way.

    • @jdfinley57
      @jdfinley57 Рік тому +1

      I actually have found it easier to still do the binding channel first. The plastic guide ring on the bottom of the router base has such a narrow lip that when I’ve cut the purfling channel first I’ve had issues with the router slipping down and ruining the binding channel. I cut my binding channel first, then add a spacer ring to extend the bearing far enough to register on the side. Still need to be careful as you point out.

    • @ligngood3787
      @ligngood3787 11 місяців тому

      @@jdfinley57 That is VERY helpful! By spacer ring, you mean something on the shaft before putting the bearing on, to make the bearing go down further without moving the cutter down, correct? What do you use for the spacer ring?

    Amazing video! So I've taken the plunge recently and picked up one of these jigs. I just wanted to check, you are feeding the body through from right to left on the first cut? When facing the jig that is?

    Why did you use the solid guide, which is for smaller body instruments, instead of the standard bumpers which give a wider, possibly more stable, reference?

  • @danstiverson
    @danstiverson 2 роки тому

    Chris,
    I've seen videos about using painters tape on saw cuts, cutting through the tape instead of directly on the wood, eliminating tear out. I'm not set up to test the theory but wonder what you think about tape helping minimalize tear out the router cuts. What do you think?
    Your videos are really great. Thanks!
    Dan

    • @DriftwoodGuitars
      @DriftwoodGuitars  2 роки тому

      I don’t think it’d work super well for binding because it would have all kinds of pleats in it because of the curved sides.

  • @jdguillot8647
    @jdguillot8647 2 роки тому

    What process will you use to clean up that little ledge in the binding channel to the bass side of the fingerboard extension? Just going back with the router, or would that be a micro-chisel job?

  • @ligngood3787
    @ligngood3787 11 місяців тому

    Why do you NOT recommend newbies buy the Elevate binding jig? The models with bearings and carriers are the same price and seem just as (if not more) tricky to set up. Is the Elevate jig too complicated to use due to the lack of carrier/cradle? Thanks for awesome videos!!

      Yeah, removing a large percentage of the soundboard doesn’t seem like a good idea. Even if it’s at the very edge, there’s got to be a negative impact as a whole.

      The impact on the top area is minimal, and, it actually adds some 'tuning' to the bass heaviness of most acoustic instruments. Therefore you get comfort, rigidity, and Sonic value (not reduction) from a relatively small change.

    So I am confused. You say over and over go down hill start at the top and go into the recessed area but all of the video that I see you are going the opposite way. For example around the 12:30 mark.
    Can you clear that up? Thank you
