    • @Dominicn123

      Of course they’re not lol they could’ve patented so many features on GTA had they wanted too but they knew that’d be a dick move and avoided it, but gta 3 revolutionized the industry and the dozens of clones that came from it, ultimately helped the whole industry grow.
      I loved sleeping dogs, mafia, saints row, the godfather, those are only the good ones, there are a dozen bad ones but they all genuinely can be played and the gta influence is strong on them.
      Even RDR had so many innovative gameplay features that could’ve been patented, but “gta in the Wild West” is the best way to define it lol
      Rockstar is literally the best developer in the industry, notice I’m not saying that they’re “one” of the best, I’m literally saying they’re the best and I am far from a fanboy 😂 their legacy and influence has just been so great, like what Mario did for platformers, metal gear did for stealth, resident evil did for survival horror, dragon quest/final fantasy did for RPG’s, etc.

      People don't seem to understand that they aren't patenting the idea just their implementation of it. You could make a similar system as long as you don't copy their implementation. In software development there are so many ways to do something.
      Unity patented an implementation of an entity component system but you can go download or make your own ECS library and Unity can't do anything if it doesn't copy their implementation.

    • @nikriedel

      I thought capitalist competition was good and led to innovation? Crazy cause the 'evil' commies have been saying that the bigger corporations get, the more they consolidate power and wealth within itself to destroy it's competition and in turn hurt the consumer.
      Patents for revolutionary technology to stifle innovation should be a wakeup call to anyone who believes that capitalism helps anyone but the greedy shareholders that see art as just another market to turn a profit from.

  • @PeacecrabVal
    @PeacecrabVal 3 місяці тому +17

    Another sticking point with motion matching is that for the animation to look natural it has to impose some kind of limitations on the kind of fast and responsive movement people expect out of their character in a game. Data-driven is definitely the cooler approach compared to what the industry has been doing so far though. I did something like R*'s new system (but less in-depth) for the locomotion on enemies in Returnal actually. The animators authored mostly fullbody animations with root motion, then a system would analyze the root motion offline and figure out speeds, directions of movement, intent etc. Then on runtime the right animation was picked dynamically based on the enemy's current pose, velocity, and what the AI wanted to do. Can't imagine doing anything like this efficiently with a regular state machine. 😄

  • @GameDevelopmentBeyondTheBasics
    @GameDevelopmentBeyondTheBasics 4 місяці тому +21

    Great video! Really interesting to see the breakdown of Rockstar's new system. Small nitpick, but at 5:14 a lot of games actually just use another animation blendtree for aiming as well. It really depends on if it's a dynamic system like in Guardians of the Galaxy and Max Payne 3 where the arms can point in different directions than the body vs something like The Division where you have to aim down sights and the only adjustment is a blendtree that bends the character at the hips, and if you do hip fire, the character's body is always facing the camera direction.

NPC's street racing? These are just the things that I speculate will happen but maybe I am being too hopeful. ALSO!!! I’ve always wondered that about GTA 5’s physics system. Although it looked improved, I wondered why some aspects were changed or removed that GTA 4 had cuz I LOVEDDD the realism revolving around the damage to the vehicles and stuff. Like they can literally be deformed and crushed if hit by a much larger vehicle. Then GTA 5 comes out and it’s like… dumbed down? I thought with each game it’d keep improving for there but with small stuff like that, I was disappointed and have always wondered about it, especially coming to newer generation consoles that have more power and such. But it makes total sense that with how much larger the map is for GTA 5 that some things would have to be compensated for others. Glad to see that with the tech for GTA 6, we should most likely be seeing a return of those things~

    • @Fauxvale
      @Fauxvale 3 місяці тому +7

      I think you're missing the point - this system is far more advanced than anything possible using tools like OAR/DAR, Nemesis, including any IK-based mod(s), or anything else for that matter. That's not to say these mods aren't impressive in their own right, but this is not really comparable, and operates in a fundamentally different way to the aforementioned mods. I've been modding Skyrim for over 7 years, and while I love what OAR and various other animation mods and tools have done for Skyrim modding (they are truly amazing, to be clear!), there is a reason Rockstar's tech got patented... Skyrim mods are not capable of doing what this system can. It's not even remotely the same technology-wise under the hood, though I can see how the end result may look similar on the surface.

      @@Fauxvale I wasn't referring to DAR/OAR

    • @Fauxvale
      @Fauxvale 3 місяці тому +2

      The specific mod is irrelevant - OAR was just an easy example of "popular and technically impressive Skyrim animation mod/tool". My point is that _no_ _mod_ is capable of doing what this system can, as it functions in a fundamentally different, far more advanced way from anything seen in Skyrim modding. I think equating this tech to Skyrim mods is wholly inaccurate; Some of the "end results" may look or sound similar on paper, but in reality, it's comparing apples to procedurally animated oranges. Again, at the cost of sounding like a broken record, it got patented for a reason lol. This is legitimately new tech being applied in new ways.

    about the aiming part.
    i have been modding the game for years now.
    and R* actually uses the ik iirc to properly attach the hand to the weapon
    so the right hand is correctly placed on the barrel.
    and the blending you explained they do too.
    but R* also has 3 different animations, which basically if you play them via mod, a roughly 180° animation, which gets correctly played when ingame.
    and the spot.
    and they have one for "high" "medium" and "low"
    like if you aim to the sky, they take the "high" animation so it looks with the character looking up and bending properly.
    aiming to the ground the low one.
    etc.
    R* does the same for when doing drivebys, even in IV.
    ad then R* basically blends them dynamically.
    pretty much every animation that allows you to dynamically move your arm, even the pointing animation in GTAO works like that.
    and they also use it for the door opening animation when you enter a interior to properly make your hand touch the door.
    the source is out there if you are interested, so you could check how it works roughly.
    R* also incorporates euphoria.
    blending with regular animations.
    like if you hit someone with the stungun, you see them fidgeting a lot bc of the "electricity"
    that is actually a animation of the character standing there, and then they blend it with euphoria so they correctly fall to the ground and still fidget.
    there is so much.
    oh and motion states and such were already used in a way in V.
    like there is a state for walking, running, swimming, stealthing tc.
    and they have the ability to just play them on a character in a mission.
    RDR2 expands upon it.
    and the patent iirc is for RDR2, so VI will probably more expanded upon that
    they actually had a GDC presentation on how they brought the horses to life with animations and such.
    which has screenshots of the tool and how it works, so probably is interesting for you too

    Filing a patent definitely doesn't mean the thing you're filing for is good- ('perpetual motion machine'). Having a patent doesn't mean it is deserved- but it will likely stand, as challenges are costly. In any case, they can be overturned for various reasons. It's way more complex than that, and I'm not a lawyer, so google some stuff- but I do know that software patents are the worst. Who ever thought to patent the process of 'rubbing your tummy while patting your head'? No one. Is it 'prior art'? Dunno- but clearly making an algorithm to do it in software deserves a special award and no one else should be allowed to make their own versions, without paying the patent owner. Seems legit...

    Side note: In the gaming industry, there are many patents that developers make to ensure that no other company patents the technology for them and prevents the original creators of it from using it (basically stealing the idea from them). It is not necessarily to prevent others from using it, but rather to ensure that they can use it.
    In short, yes, they can prevent other companies from using the technology, but that doesn't mean they will actually do it. There are several cases of both choices.

    there is an insane detail that I noticed looking at the leaked footage from September 2022, in one of the videos Lucia is shooting a bunch of cops, and you can see how realistic the ragdoll animations work now, if you've seen real videos of people getting shot (I spent a little too much time in Liveleak), you know it looks nothing like in the movies, they usually just colapse, or sometimes, when they are in the floor and try to move, they won't be able to move their legs because the bullet probably destroyed their spine. Well, going back to GTA 6, I saw that in this clip that im mentioning, one of the cops gets shot and instead of ragdoll like in GTA 5, he simply colapsed because the bullet went right to his head, and there was another cop (personally this detail was my favourite) who was trying to get up only using his arms but he couldn't move his legs.

Uhm... excuse me but that sounds pretty similar to basically what everyone has been doing in the games industry for the last 10 years. Well made, funny, informative, and straightforward. If that doesn't deserve a sub, Idk what does. Great work.

    Wow, thanks for explaining! Having placed GTA since '97, as always, I can't wait for this new release! I noticed how the cop was running faster than the big guy he was chasing in the trailer. I wonder what level of depth goes on there and if certain mechanisms like going to the gym (I'm thinking GTA:SA) or what you eat are going to play a role here.

    Highly informative sis... Job well done... I am sooooo excited to play GTA VI when it comes out... Im an indie dev, former student and current animator. The strides that have been made with AI, Mocap and Animation software is insane right now. Keep up the great work and I am subscribed as well.
