I take a sort of weird comfort from Steve still laughing at Alan Partridge in real life. I used to have this horrible feeling he resented the character as it's all he's remembered for - which is how he portrays it on The Trip
It's because Coogan has a bigger ego than Alan Partridge.. He hates that a daily mail 'racist' can be more popular than his own trueself , because he's truly is such an awful human being.

Coogan is an institution of British comedy. He created the funniest and most enduring comedy character of all time in Alan, and the way he's developed him particularly in the last 10 years with I, Partridge, Nomad and The Oasthouse has just added such depth to the character as well as making him more hilarious. What other comedy character is there that you know pretty much his entire life story chronicled through books , tv programs and podcasts?
Yeah, I once joked with my brother about political fundraisers going to the swankiest parts of Hollywood and saying you need to fundraise for a PAC to deal with sexism and racism. "Oh yes?" the chequebook would begin to open. "...And we want more egalitarianism" "What???" And the chequebook would swing shut :-D I'm not saying that sexism and racism are nice, it's just that I think it's a way for rich people to dodge the real issue in this world.
If I was Steve Coogan I would be extremely proud of Alan, when ever I'm in a good or bad mood Alan Partridge is my go too comedy, ground breaking in its day and exciting to still see he is still playing the character, he shouldn't see it as an albatross, more of a pleasure to continue making millions laugh out load...lol

Getting rid of canned laughter was a godsend for Steve Coogan and Alan Partridge. It allowed the character to get a lot more subtle and quick, and it's telling that in this video the Mid Morning Matters clip is the most replayed. Imagine that clip with canned laughter, none of the jokes would work, they'd be cut out to make space for the cheesy laugh track. Like Coogan says, it's tight, rehearsed, very intricate.
He often comes across as a bit moody and earnest I think. Here might be the first time I’ve seen Steve Coogan seem like a fun chap, he must have enjoyed this format
Great parody only exaggerates by a few percent, and that's where Coogan shines. It's easy to go over the top, but he always reins it back, which is actually harder to get right as you have both lower and upper bounds, and the less margin you give yourself the tighter the performance and material has to be.
When talking about the abundance of detective shows back in the day the first thing I thought was its worse now with those Scandinavian knock-off noir type programmes every bloody week, sure enough he brought it up right after!

Interesting that in choosing to make a film about a rich, greedy money grubbing heartless businessman Steve based his character on an actual department store owner who was Jewish. Careful there, Steve, you could have ended up with a position in Corbyn’s cabinet! I’m sure that Steve would insist that it’s just a total coincidence that Phillip Green is Jewish and he just happened to pick a rich greedy Jewish guy to caricature but I doubt he would give the benefit of the doubt to someone on the right who did the same. Really interesting insights here. I have sat in meetings on a show with Armando Iannucci and Peter Bayham in the mid 90's. It was a brainstorming session at the BBC. Armando was trying to think of ideas... I suggested an idea (a terrible idea) which started with me saying "I think we should...." I was a young trainee assistant producer. The room went silent when I said it. And he said in the most condescending way he could "Do you." No smile. No friendliness. I still squirm at how small that man made me feel. I was so embarrassed. I think he has probably changed now and is a lovely guy - but that day he made me feel extremely low. It's odd how these tiny moments affect you your entire life.
The people who mellow out and become national treasures were often really nasty pieces of work when they were younger and on the way up. Others that spring to mind are Brucie, Michael Caine, Gervais. Corden will be another. Once you've made it it's easier to be nice to everyone.
Your wording was the problem. Present ideas as choices ( ideally 2 options, for simplicitys sake) & not decisions you've made ( which implies you think you're the expert/ the boss). Then you're not taking over or dictating what happens regardless of their input: & then people feel valued & included.

It's odd how these tiny moments affect you your entire life.
who... armando?
The people who mellow out and become national treasures were often really nasty pieces of work when they were younger and on the way up. Others that spring to mind are Brucie, Michael Caine, Gervais. Corden will be another. Once you've made it it's easier to be nice to everyone.
Your wording was the problem. Present ideas as choices ( ideally 2 options, for simplicitys sake) & not decisions you've made ( which implies you think you're the expert/ the boss). Then you're not taking over or dictating what happens regardless of their input: & then people feel valued & included.
You should have reflected over Saxondale Steve. Underappreciated piece that I love.
Nice to see him smile and laugh at his own clips. Genuine guy
He is the funniest person on the planet .... And I've met my dad
@Andrew Balletto yep ... You have a point 👍
And lee Mack
I wish Steven was half as good as he was when he was Partridge. Unbelievably good work, now all we get is Michael Caine impressions..
Alan Partridge for an OBE !!
He's helped so many at so many levels...
The BBC , Radio , Viewers and Listeners , The General Public , The UK as a Nation , and a "Savior" to "human photocopier" , Lynn Benfield !!
Only the nonces get those titles so I hope not...
@@pagethreemodel Then "The Nobel Piece Prize" instead !!
Alan didn't inspire peace in the middle east but he did have close communication with a former SAS combat "killer" who served in Iraq !!
Michael in the petrol station !! lol
He hates Britain though.
@@strangelee4400 Alan was and IS a legend !! And also a natural leader !!
A man who IS his own man, unlike posh and becks who are simply , mutton dressed up as mutton, lol !!
I never thought his career had flat lined before philomena but for him to think that and go in a completely different direction is brave.
SC could afford to take some more tragic roles. I love his comic characters, but Philomena is wonderful. Most of the secondary characters in Partridge are also rather tragic. Especially Lynn and Simon. Was so happy to see Lynn returning on "This Time"
