That man is a genius. I have laughed more often, harder and for longer at this man’s hilarious, intelligent and sometimes slightly tragic comedy than any other comic from any other time.
Genius is a word that is bandied about too lightly by people who have struck the word "excellent" from their vocabulary and who lack a sense of proportion. Even if we limit ourselves to the British Isles, that country has so many comedians of the same talent and stature as Coogan that to claim he somehow surpasses them is ludicrous. If we were to believe YT commenters, the world is chock-full of underrated geniuses.
It's all an exercise in safe comedy. Can I get away with that? Is my career damaged if I laugh at that? Showbiz people are the emptiest vessels on earth.
Yes, I've always loved our British humor, their style, clever cadence, cheeky double talk, beautiful pace control, best story telling, unabashed tongue in cheek elbow you in your side, take no prisoners, life celebrating comedians! By the way I'm Mexican American with some Irish...Guacamole with a little Blarney stone.
i must communicate that i am not a middle aged white man and i find him amazing. because its important for me to communicate my openness to all other humans.
Steve Coogan is an absolute genius, my Mother passed away recently and I found Alan Partridge the only thing I could watch to keep me sane and laugh again. The writers the ideas and Steve as Alan is brilliant, thank you so much 🎉❤😂
Yeah, I don’t think the same will be said of Donald Glover, who couldn’t bear to even break a smile. Just too cool and frankly just too important of an icon to do so.
Not all Audiences cheer/clap everything . Sometimes they just like to take in the content uninterrupted so as to not upset the timing or value of the words.
This is a wonderful speech. There were many in the audience who were stoney faced but there was some laughter in the audience. The thing for me is that wherever ever you are in the world, you can watch and enjoy it now!
The sign of a dying culture is when no one stands to appreciate if not the man but that wonderful speech he gave....true and thoughtful entertainers will be gone soon and we will be left with the so called woke and shallow entertainers who are bred on a false culture that is social media. It it truly sad.
It took a moment for the message at 3:05 to sink in didn’t it - the complete opposite of what happens now. And some of the faces especially at the start were priceless - if I laugh and someone sees me laughing I might never work again - better tow the line.
I am glad he acknowledged Henry Normal. In the 90s when I lived in Manchester, I thought he was one of the best things about the place. I hope he is making a comfortable living these days, poetry never paid great.
Coogan would certainly acknowledge Henry Normal- he’s worked with him for over 20 years. They set up Baby Cow - check out their list of productions. His career went just fine without relying on the poetry, topped off with a BAFTA for services to TV comedy in 2017 just after he retired.
Pure gold. Well, emerald. Semi-precious gem encrusted comedy. Diamante or whatever it is, comedy. Pure. As the driven snow. That is not a euphemism. No one was snorting. That's not a euphemism either. An absolute shower of quality. A pure shower of gold. A golden shower of comedy.
Nobody will want to work with him....except, of course, those that want to line their own pockets, so he can pretty much say what he likes. Great speech. Coogan realises this. What a genius!
As a white man i haven't had to battle about anything. But the audience didn't see the that he was being sarcastic, And gave him his best applause of the night.
Ironically, my experience has been totally different. Pushed off the Social Housing queue in The 1970s to, literally, accommodate, the homeless immigrants from The Caribbean and Asiatic Nations. Then, at work, being given a permanent contract with an Inner London Council, after due process, only for 3 weeks later a memo to arrive "from high " saying that " As Black people were under-represented in The Education Department" then the whole interviewing process had to be done again and a Black candidate appeared from nowhere to take the only position and I was out altogether and it prevented me getting a position in The Police Force on the flimsiest technicality after gaining 100% marks on all their myriad of diversity questions (having lived with a Caribbean Lady for 20+ years helped my knowledge ). Fortunately, I turned all of these negatives into positives by owning my own house and owning 2 Medium-Sized Businesses but it is hardly the point :)
Irony or the subtlety of his humour is totally this man, unfortunately lost on this audience...... Thank you Steve for making me laugh over the many years, true professional as always... Charlie Chaplin Britannia Award for Excellence in Comedy..... Recognition; enough said....

Brilliant speech and for more entertainment scroll through the comments and laugh hysterically at the twats who don't recognise irony and sarcasm even when it's shoved in their face!! Amazing!!
I recognize irony and sarcasm, and I'm a fan of Steve Coogan as an actor, but this wasn't funny. Brits seem to love everything British no matter how bad it is.
@igeto12 Not particularly. They have plenty of crackpot notions which are just that. However, I probably agree with them more than I do with the hard left or the hard right.
Magnolia Rattus Well that’s your opinion. It is obvious you’re not a Brit, as this speech seems to be too subtle, and nuanced for you. This speech was genuinely very funny, with smatterings of Alan Partridge thrown in. Unlike most American humour which tries too hard with ‘ hey look I’m being funny now’
They just don’t get it do they? He knows this, and the subtlety in the speech is genius. It’s why he’s one of the greatest ever
That man is a genius. I have laughed more often, harder and for longer at this man’s hilarious, intelligent and sometimes slightly tragic comedy than any other comic from any other time.
well lets not forget Peter Cook. Or Mayall. But I agree, he's right up there.
Underrated genius
i still watch the same episodes of AP the last 20 years and they're still as good as ever. A true genius comic

I agree. The other comparative names that come to mind, for myself, is Peters Cook and Sellers, Chris Morris.
What a shame Steve Coogan had to do a speech infront of that lot
These people have no idea of his work?
It's all an exercise in safe comedy. Can I get away with that?
Is my career damaged if I laugh at that?
Showbiz people are the emptiest vessels on earth.
Nothing fills me with joy more than the camera panning to a crowd full of stuck up celebrities not laughing at hilarious people
Also the ones laughing.
one of the finest and most underrated comics.....such wit and the subtle, dry British humour full of irony.....Genius

Steve Coogan never fails to make me laugh! Absolutely love his humour! Brilliant speech!
Thanks to Coogan who goes for the jugular here in a subtle way, and not always for the laughs.
Adore him
Oooh!! RVA 😮 ... Adore you 😊
Damn right :-)
So refreshingly open and honest, I always liked him, and this video just reminded me why.
Well done, very nice to be given the opportunity to complete a decent monologue at an awards show. 👍🏽
Funny, intelligent speech delivered to a shallow, vapid audience.
Yep.
Nothing more I can add to that.
Agree. Completely over their heads. At least we can enjoy it though.
I think the initial opener probably shocked the woke brigade and made the non-woke feel unable to appreciate him.
Oh gee, be nice, his daughter was in the room.
one of the funniest men ever! well done Steve getting through that with that mostly dull crowd!
Back of the net!! So glad he received this award. He is an Absolute Legend!!
The line “I don’t think this is the time or the place” didn’t get the recognition it deserved
“I’d mention them by name but this is neither the time nor the place” that’s very funny and people didn’t seem to get it at all
I think the intro made the audience think " Oh this sounds non PC! Should I laugh, clap or sit on my hands." After that, they were just uncomfortable.
Yep, you can see them not getting it. Shame
They would be pissing themselves if it was Alan Partridge
Albeit downplayed, this award must taste almost as sweet as that Toblerone addiction, he so bravely overcame.
Although I'm not sure if winning a BAFTA would make you drive to Dundee in your bare feet....
I'm in Dundee in my bare feet, and I'm not even nominated
The nuts on this man. Well played sir.
Needles to say, he had the last laugh.
