Hi Louis. Grate video, fun and informative.I'm little bit surprised that DC small headsets you found to noisy. I used to fly with them for few years and was bit satisfied. I have also Zulu 3 and A-20, and yes they are better as far as quietness but not much. Using them in my SR20 by occasional rotation in order. As you said, we are all different in many aspects. Thanks.
The "tin can" comment you make at 18:17 is noticeably true. There is an expression in the sound industry, "no lows, they're Bose." Many sound people agree that most Bose products do not carry lower tones well. I agree that the DC's sound better to the listener. Great video by the way.
Great, informative video. As a pilot who's been absent from flying for a few too many decades, I've got my Special Issuance 3rd Class "in progress." If all goes well, I'll be shopping for a headset in the next few months. Had a chance to try the A20's in a friends 172 and they were comfortable, and the ANR worked great, that being said they're also $1095. Recently I was able to put a pair of the DC One-X on my head, and they were very comfy and "only" $895. I live in the Phoenix area, there's just nowhere where I can don different headsets to determine what feels best on my head.
Been using earbuds on my motorcycles for over twenty years; silicone is the way. Maybe a tiny bit less attenuation, but no fiddling or cross embedded earwax. Great comparison. Also, Clarity mic sounded exactly same as A20
Louis, Great video comparing the different units. Your timing was impeccable. I have 2 Bose headsets and now need a third one. I was contemplating LightSpeed’s headset just to mix things up but your video confirmed Bose is still the way to go. Thanks. See you around KLOM, Leo
The Bose DO sound "tin canny", compared to the One-X's. However, the One-X's appear to have a "hot" mic. Lots of popping on your P's, and high-freq hisses on your S's. Is the mic gain adjustable? The One-X's sound more natural in overall voice tone and they sound warmer. I tend to give more weight to how my audio sounds on the receiving end. I'll be buying the One-X's. Thanks for a great review video.
Great comparison. I vote for the Clarity Aloft as the winner. Great sound/noise canc. I've been around airplanes for too long, so I now need in ear hearing aids. Sticking foam into my ears is not a problem. The Bose is my #2. Pricey, but great quality.
13:41 great review thanks. Just a tip you can plug in a headset into the copilot spot and use that headset while you're swapping out the pilot side's headset. lol
Pro tip on the Clarity Alofts: if they're damp, they slide in much easier - you can essentially skip the part where you pull back your ear with the other hand, and simply slide them in. How you get them damp, is up to you - I've seen higher and lower "ick factor" approaches. But, getting them well into the ear is key: whenever you see a review that says they don't cancel noise as well as the Bose, you have a reviewer who didn't get them well seated in the ear.
I am a Jump Pilot, bare bone C182. Zero Sound proofing in the aircraft itself. I am debating to invest in a ANC Headset, but I am also very curious about the Clarity Aloft. I get in and out of the airplane every 20min all day long. I do about 15 flights a day average 5-6 days/week. I wonder if the earbud style are good for my environment, how would the earbuds themself hold up, how fast do they expand? Are they mostly designed for quieter/larger aircrafts?
Definitely not limited to quieter aircraft- used properly they are noticeably quieter than the Bose - but I think it could be pretty tedious putting them on and taking them off 15 times a day. It takes maybe 20-30 seconds to put them on, compared to "throwing on" a standard headset.
Been thinking of taking that journey into piloting and just having fun looking at the different headsets. I personally want a solid robust set with great quality sound while being comfortable. I hear people say the David Clark H10 are what new pilots use. But I'd prefer something with some noise canceling. I do have relatively large ears. A20's are often spoken about but the David Clark One X seems to also have great quality sound. Being a photographer I spend $4k on a camera & $2000-$3000 per lens so $600-$1100 for quality headset wouldn't scare me away. I probably wouldn't start off with the in ear. I just want a set that will handle traveling around from location to location in & out of the bag.. banged around a bit.. etc.
Good luck with you decision if you start flying…it is life changing. Try a headset before you buy. Most flight schools will have various sets and certainly your instructor will let you try theirs as well. Also, I think some of the online stores give you 30 day trials. Either way you can’t go wrong with Bose, DC or light speed. Have fun and fly safe!
After 5hrs with the A20s on my head, the pain is real. I'm going out and buying some Alofts today and giving them a shot. The choice between original, Pros, and Flex... no idea ;-)
I have the pros and love them. My wife has the originals and they are fine as well (I have used them too). I cant speak for the flex but as far as the other two I like the pros. Thanks!
I love my bose but their mic is just too treble heavy i think.. when i record videos with it, i tend to adjust the sound to diminish treble. Just my 2c. Great video!! Thank you!
Hello Louis. I came across your channel and find all of your videos to be of excellent content. If is not because I read your description I would have definitely thought you were a Cirrus certified instructor. I purchased an SR 20 G6 3 months ago, waiting for an SR 22 2021 that will be delivered in October 2022. I'm looking for advanced IN cockpit perspective plus training. If you know of anyone please let me know. Will continue to wait for your releases. Hopefully in the future you could record an IFR flight from the planning stages all the way to the landing, with closeup frontal view of the buttons. Happy Flying Jose
Bose requires to change their ear seals every 100 hour or once a year or the noice reduction changes they cost about $35.00 so less the. The clarity. So the Cost to buy 6 changes of Clarity tips is less. As far a total noice reduction the clarity tips are used in the Black Hawk
Do you have a ship's power 6 pin Lemo jack installed in the aircraft? If so, were you able to use the same jack for each of the active noise cancelling headsets? I'm based out of Pennridge, not far north of Wings and also on 123.0. Thanks!
Thanks for watching! Yes I have both 6 pin Lemo and dual plug in the Cirrus. I have to say that for some reason my 6 pin Bose headset always seems more to have more "cracking" than all my dual plug headsets. BTW - I love going to Pennridge. Been there many times back in the day for training flights. Fly safe!
Thanks for watching! I have not tried the Pilot Carbon headset and only saw 1 review at one of the pilot stores (which was not very good). Bose or Clarity Aloft are still my choices.
I have a different brand of in ear headset. They sound great except when I move my jaw or like yawn it affects and alters the pitch I hear such that it sounds like the engine RPM is suddenly surging. This is very disconcerting as the pilot. Did you not notice this at all on your Clarity Alofts?
Thank you. May I ask a fitting issue: It looks like Zulu 3 earcups ar almost fully compressed (maybe 1 notch extended) while A20 (cannot see the One-X very well) still have some notches to compress? I'm looking for a headset for my wife. And while my Zulu 3 are fully extended to fit my head they are too wide for my wife even if fully compressed.
The Zulu 3 are a much larger headset. Depending on the noise level in your plane the ProX2 are definitely the best fit for your wife (my wife's choice), although they are the noisiest. The next best fit would be the A20s I believe. Good luck!
@@phillypilot It's a microlight with rotax engine. While trying a headset in a quiet living room might point to a light "on-ear", it's the least suited for that kind of plane I guess. I must admit it lured a little smile on my face seeing you realising that it might take some time before you could get rid of them inflight...
You don’t need to buy clarity alofts earbud sets. I buy replacement packs for mine from earphones plus. Cheaper and get more. Also clarity aloft only has a one year warranty.
Thank you for that great tip on the replacement earbuds. I just ordered a set to try! Ironically, I just spent 2 hours in my Cirrus and 6 hours in the vision jet today and wore my clarity aloft the entire time. I really do love the freedom of not having a large headset over your head/ears all day. Thanks again for the info!
Also, the foam polymer is the secret to the sound attenuation. That particular foam is by Comply. If you are buying Comply foam tips, then you will be getting the same noose attenuation. If not, then you are not blocking as much noise. That performance wa tested and quantified by the US military when searching for the best hearing protection for Blackhawks and Harriers.
Headset Inc 6001BT for $600. I'd like to see somebody add these to a review since they seems to be military focused headset creators. For the price they a worth a check and I've heard good things through the grapevine. I'll be getting one for my wife and if its not good enough it'll be a passenger headset.
Yes - I have the first generation Bose pro-ears. I think they are great for either jets or even a turboprop like the pilatus, but they are still too loud for single engine pistons in my opinion. Thanks for watching :)
Beautiful interior of your cirrus
Well done, I love my Clarity Aloft headset too.
Awesome review. Thank you for this. I'm choosing for my flight school training.
Good luck with your training and thanks for watching!

Great review. Have been looking for someone doing this comparison for a long time.
Thank you so much for the video. I need another GOOD headset for my very noisy 2nd aircraft a Christen Eagle..... so I think I made the choice...
That is great to hear and thank you for watching!
Thanks for sharing

First - Thanks for watching and your pro tip is a great one! I cant wait to try, although I will go with "lower ick" way 😎
I can hear the engine more in the DC. I’m glad I have the A20s
Whats with the yellow mic booms? Never have seen those before.
