CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Susan (Skye Bartusiak) runs after her father (Mel Gibson) begging him to not leave the family again to go back to war.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Roland Emmerich and Dean Devlin, the director/producer team responsible for such sci-fi blockbusters as Independence Day, Stargate, and Godzilla, take a step back in time with this drama set during the American Revolution. Farmer Benjamin Martin (Mel Gibson) was born and raised in South Carolina, and fought bravely during the French-Indian wars. But since the death of his wife, Benjamin has renounced violence and quietly tends his crops, raising his seven children alone. In 1776, over Benjamin's objections, his oldest son Gabriel (Heath Ledger) joins the fight against the British. Gabriel returns from battle seriously wounded, with Lord General Cornwallis (Tom Wilkinson) calling for his arrest. A skirmish breaks out on Benjamin's plantation, and one of his children is killed as Gabriel is captured by Col. Tavington (Jason Isaacs) and sentenced to hang. Benjamin sets aside his vow of pacifism and rescues Gabriel; with the help of his former comrade-in-arms Harry Burwell (Chris Cooper), the father and son form a regiment of Carolina patriots whose cunning and ruthlessness make them heroes among the colonists -- and wanted men by British troops. Loosely adapted from the true story of Francis Marion and filmed on location in South Carolina, The Patriot was the first feature film made with the cooperation of the Smithsonian Institute, who advised the producers on historical accuracy. Joely Richardson also stars as Charlotte, Benjamin's sister-in-law who helps him care for the children.

How can you NOT cry when she says "Papa"? God, I break every time.

I know what you mean.. I'm a 51 year old man and every time I see this clip.. I tear up.
I love how instantly he stopped and turned around after he heard her......
He knew. He could hear her voice. Such a great scene =]
Any real dad would
If you know anything about a father-daughter bond --- this scene makes PERFECT sense
Even his oldest son turned around instantly.
I'm not even a parent, just an auntie, but this scene makes me tear up every time 😢.
Not a parent either, just an uncle and this scene makes me tear up everytime I watch it
I'm just an uncle & I feel the same way too.
I still can't figure out how she was such a good actor at age 7 when she filmed this scene --- the way she slowly builds up the tears --- only adults can do that
Me too!
This scene is really tugs at the heart. Sad😢
Women cry at the Titanic, but that scene makes grown men cry. Imagine the hundreds and thousands of men who rode off and they DIDN'T come back. Damn i need a tissue.
@Jane Black I dont have children yet, as im only 25. But i would bust into tears if my daughter said that to me before i marched off to war. I would be tempted to not go, but i would know what i had to do. Thankfully im about to go to MEPS and join the Coast Guard, but i don't have kids to worry about.

I just found out this actress passed on July 19, 2014. The fact that I never knew this talented girl personally doesn't take away from the sadness I feel. Her performance in this scene is so moving. One of the few scenes in film that chokes me up in tears every time I see it, and as silly as it may sound, when an actor or actress is able to make you react emotionally, they really do claim a small piece of your heart. When someone touches your soul in that way there is always some sense of loss when they pass. Thank you Skye, Bless you.....
I dont really know if she was a good person or not...but a shame nonetheless...No one should die so young.I'm not trying to idolize her...as a passionate cinephile I just wanted to share my thoughts on this wonderful performance. I think thats valid.
And also explain why it hurt me in some way to hear of her passing..
Wtf? Seriously? I'm gonna take a wild guess and say she overdosed...
Gonna look it up right now.
damiion666 "The exact cause of death is an accident due to the combined effects of hydrocodone and difluoroethane with carisoprodol," a source at the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences tells PEOPLE.
Hydrocodone is found in pain killers, carisoprodol is a muscle relaxant and difluoroethane is an inhalant found in household products that can be used to get high, according to the National Institutes of Health.
Bartusiak's mother, Helen, told CNN that her daughter had been suffering from epileptic seizures before her death.
"She was a kind and really beautiful girl," she said. "This girl has lived such an amazing life."
So did gabriel in 2008
I not only cry when she says, "Papa"..... it's Mel reaction that gets to me the way he responds to her. Loved it!
Me too! No hesitation, just jumped down from that horse and ran to her. It was so sweet how she was so small in his arms, you could barely see her while he was hugging her. I LOVE watching a real masculine man hug his kids. I just love this movie and this scene!

As a dad with a daughter this scene always getsme. When he is looking at her, he stays strong and calm for her. He makes her feel like its going to be ok even though she is scared. But when he hugs her, his face is full of heartache that he has to go.
Such a great scene.
This scene always bring tears to me, despite how many times I watch. Fathers love to his children is unlimited.
Say what you want about Mel Gibson. No one makes movies like this anymore.
I'll say he's a badass 👍
Except Mel Gibson.
Say what I want? I think he's a talent in an industry filled with talent-less America-hating hypocrites. And I prefer his values over theirs every day and twice on Sunday.
Mel Gibson still directing movies by the way, he's gonna have the Resurrection of the Christ coming soon.

I’m willing to bet anything that this had to be the audition scene for the child actress playing Susan because this was really her most memorable moment in the entire film. This scene makes me cry EVERY TIME! It’s NOT EASY finding a very young child actor who can make you cry instantly just by acting like that. Skye McCole Bartusiak was a genius. May she rest in peace (2014 at age 21 from accidental drug overdose according to IMDB)

16 years later, and this part still makes me cry.
What makes this scene so fantastic is the reaction of Susan's siblings and love ones after she says "Papa". Just little details like such makes this movie as whole incredible. If only movies would do things like this these days and not just CGI and action every few minutes. This is more believable and occur in people's lives; kudos to Mel Gibson.
One of the finest movies of cinema history. Mel's performance in this was just superb
If historically incorrect.
@petebromleyBromers He said cinema history, not actual history.
I have a little girl, she's 6 years old. When she was about 4 she was laying on her grandfather's couch. I told her that I had to go because I had work in the morning. She began to cry. I went over to her and asked; "Why are you crying?", she then said these exact words to me; "I love you dad.". Those words just let the waterfall loose. 😭
This man is a great actor

I really did come close to crying where I first saw the movie
Usually i despise kids in movies but Susan is such a little angel here
In my opinion, this was not only Mel's best performance, but one of the best performances in a movie by an actor
Totally agree
What a phenomenal film this is. It's wonderful that the writer took the time to show us these moments when we really learn who the characters are and what they have personally at stake. That's a quality that a lot of films lack, sadly. I always cry at this scene; it's one of the most brilliant in cinema's history, I think. We not only feel the sense of confusion from Susan, but the fear of failure and longing for acceptance on the part of her father. When he says, "You make me very happy," it hits very close to home for me. Top notch storytelling.
Unfortunately the rest of the film is completely historically unrealistic and is just Gibsons way of bashing the British.
Well, you really can't pin that on him. He didn't write or direct this movie.
The writer did an excellent realistic job. What realistic is that Susan is the youngest child and she just doesn't understand why her father is leaving. She also doesn't understand the meaning of war and the fight for freedom. I can't forget that Susan has been told by her oldest brother Gabriel that she shouldn't hate him. He even told her that they are all in danger and there is a reason why their father has been absent a lot.
