Great scene but it was out of character for how they wanted Commodus portrayed. Commodus was made to look like a coward willing to kill but afraid to die.

That can be a virtue when it drives us to excel. Resourcefulness, courage, perhaps not on the battlefield, but... there are many forms of courage. Devotion, to my family and to you. But none of my virtues were on your list. Even then it was as if you didn't want me for your son!" - Commodus (My favorite Quote)
I thought about that too, but then again, they may have still made him the scapegoat despite the fact everyone wanted Commodus dead. I can't even fathom the punishment for killing an Emperor at that time in History.
This scene should have been included, to add emphasis to the corrupt, sadistic nature of Commodos. The dynamic in this scene with Quintos is important too, as it lends insight into the final fight sequence in the coliseum, after Commodos lost control of his sword, and Quintos orders his soldiers, "Sheath your swords!".
100% agreed. Very important scene to have been deleted. I always wondered why Quintos says Sheath Your Swords so easily. This scene explains it all in such great detail.
I love this scene, the acting, music, the way it addresses the situation in which Maximus escaped and it highlights the relationship between Quintus and Commodus.. …if only they hadn’t used the command “fire” to signal the archers..
@RollandB Even that isn’t entirely correct. There is no historical evidence of these organised “knock-draw-loose” volleys that you always see on film. Just didn’t happen. Bows are incredibly hard to draw and archers would fire at different speeds. When given the order to shoot they would just fire at will
Its a very good scene, but the reason why they probably cut it out is because its so compelling that it makes you think more about the subplot between Caesar and the general which detracts the audience from the main storyline.

Maybe for the 1st of 2nd time, the command "loose" or "release" would have detracted spectators from this scene. It is some kind of sophism that is not apt in the emotionality of the scene. The present-day word "Fire!" perfectly captures the meaning of what Quintus had to say at that given moment. I think it was a wise decision to let him say "Fire!" rather than "Release!". By the way, Quintus, Commodus and the lot should have spoken ancient Latin rather than English. I did not hear you complain about that.
This scene doesn’t do much more for explaining why Quintus doesn’t help Commodus in the end. It actually hampers flow. Maximus’s gravitas and purity were actively compared to Commodus’s villainy and weakness and examined by Quintus over the course of the story, who, seeing an opportunity to end what would’ve been a lifelong reign of terror, was also able to make amends for betraying Maximus at the beginning of the movie. Commodus’s stabbing of Maximus prior to the final fight was the final straw for Quintus. He knew Maximus had the love of the people and had he survived, would have been able to excuse him of disobeying Emperor Commodus for the sake of the greater good.
Quintus could have totally ordered his troops to aim at Commodus instead. It would have caused chaos in the short term, but the soldiers in that moment would have done it. They didn't want to kill their own guys just for being loyal to Maximus.
***** Once the general,s wanted you gone from power you were finished ..how ? it is like Napoleon after waterloo ..he kept a huge army with him despite his defeat
+lake fire They'd have you killed. That is one of the reasons emperors over time weakened the Roman Army to the point that it couldn't do its job right of protecting the empire, so that no one general had enough soldiers to stage an overthrow of the emperor.
lake fire I think he means the Praetorian guard. they were the real power behind the throne, without then loyal and emperor was as good as dead - and in many cases ended up being so
This was the first movie I've ever seen of Joaquin Phoenix, when I was a kid. I used to have a crush on Commodus. From there, I have crushes on villains.
I feel like when Quintus said "loyal to the emperor" Commodus took it as referring to his dad and like it was a shot at him as emperor. Or Quintus really did mean it like that.
I've just watched Gladiator for the first time ever 3 days ago and this scene was in the movie! Looks like I must have watched the extended version without realising it. I recommend everyone watch the extended version because the movie makes less sense without them
I reckon the general knew Maximus escaped. Their is no way he would hesitate that much and to be sacrificing two soldiers who have done no wrong edges him to turn against the emperor.
It is a question whether he was accessory to murder, his guilt is not proven but it is assumed. The emperor was telling him that he should have known because he was a general and punishing him firstly, by refusing his request. At the same time giving him a guilty trip by making sure he knew that those men were dying in his place. Testing fate standing in between the two men he tests his loyalty with an opportunity to kill him by ordering the troops to fire on him as well.Knowing that Maximus was still alive was tatamount to seeking to kill the Emperor.
The drama of this scene is diminished somewhat by the fact that Quintus orders the archers to "fire" when he should have said "loose" or "shoot". It stands out and takes me out of the movie a bit. Even before I looked up the proper term, "fire" just felt wrong. This is especially surprising because they correctly use "loose" for the archers and catapults in the opening battle scene.
thing is that in real life they would have been saying it in latin so technically there is no correct english way to say it. I agree that it stands out a bit though
@@oliverparikian9536 , true, but surely the best way to say in English would be the way the military officers in England commanded to the archers to, well, release the arrows, say for example in medieval times before guns were invented :)
Such a shame that in truly great films there are nearly always very effective scenes that end up getting cut. This riveting one is certainly no exception. And in nearly every case the deleted scenes only add to and enhance the overall experience of the film, not detract from it.
Great stuff. Phoenix wouldn't have been liked because of his skill in this role, but he did exactly what he had to do. Showed his skill here too. Should have kept this scene in. Hopefully Phoenix gets an Oscar for Joker
The only time I've ever seen a movie accurately depict that holding a bow drawn back for an extended period of time is really really hard. Just a shame they said "fire"
They should not have deleted this scene. It explained why certain things happened and gave a reason for later actions as they were related to the plot and the message of the film as a whole in respect to society and human nature where in motives hide only to be revealed later as the primordial animalistic behaviors of humans.
Minto S A it’d be “loose”. Great catch though. It’s surprising because they did correctly use the terms in the battle scene at the beginning of the movie
This scene should have been kept because it gives insight to what happened to a person when he get enrolled in a job where he has to receive orders and execute them regardless if they are just or not.. A strong message against armies and every system that allows bloodshed
if you read the book, so much was cut out.. Commodus was selling the food reserves to pay for the games and Rome would have run out of food, this explains so much more about the film
True story: Joaquin Pheonix was initially very nervous on set, and before filming the scene where Commodus and Maximus have their big scene together, he asked Russel Crowe if he could rough him up so that he would be psyched up to shoot the scene. Russell was mortified and even went to Sir Richard Harris (Marcus Aurelius) for advice, saying "Mate, what are we going to do with this kid? He's asking me to abuse him before takes!" To which Harris replied "Let's get him pissed", and so over several hours they got their co-star drunk and he eventually relaxed XD

Quintus could have totally ordered his troops to aim at Commodus instead. It would have caused chaos in the short term, but the soldiers in that moment would have done it. They didn't want to kill their own guys just for being loyal to Maximus.
They would never held the arrows for so long. After 10 seconds it hurts like hell let alone this time
Once the Generals were not on your side your reign was over ..the emperor knew he was finished at this scene
This was the fatal mistake of commodus . If he didn't murder the two soldiers the praetorians / quintus would have stayed loyal to him
The Clash king Maybe, but he was also so horrible to Maximus that that also was a reason why Quintus betrayed him.
lake fire I think he means the Praetorian guard. they were the real power behind the throne, without then loyal and emperor was as good as dead - and in many cases ended up being so
Commodus is sexiest villain all the time. Love Joaquin Phoenix.
I like the guy in Schindler's list better
gorgeous💕
Same as joker ;)
Oh hell no there are far more attractive villains and hero’s
I'm a lesbian but Commodus could like, get it tbh
Ha! Dude on the very right at 2:30 was the reason, this scene got deleted! 😂
I really liked this scene the most out of the deleted bunch.
This was the first movie I've ever seen of Joaquin Phoenix, when I was a kid. I used to have a crush on Commodus. From there, I have crushes on villains.
lady luna ok i'm old now lol i remember him in Spacecamp in 1986 i was only 5 but he stole the film too 😂
It didn't creep you out that he wanted to have kids with his sister?
@@jasonito23 Women's attraction is weird. I know women who had the hots for scar in lion king.
@@jasonito23 I don't think the totality of this character was used in their equation.
You might wanna see a psychiatrist for that one hun...
Commodus was extra spicy in this clip lol
Says a lot about the quality of this film when the deleted scenes are better than most movies.
I recommend everyone watch the extended version because the movie makes less sense without them
I really wish Hollywood would leave important scenes in the movie!!
I bet this deleted scene will be better than Gladiator 2.
Phoenix eyes act for him
This scene wasn't deleted, everyone must see the original movie.
Hello from 2020, he finally got his Oscar!
Joaquin Phoenix did a great job in this movie. Hands down his best performance.
This scene I think should’ve stayed. It gave a new perspective to how sadistic and psychotic Commodus was.
This is one of the best scenes i think i've ever seen. I don't know why they would've cut it from the movie.
The emperor was so embarrassed by maximus that he lost his mind and now we know him as joker
Lumberjack Agies hahahaha
And he is an immortal from Highlander.
I reckon the general knew Maximus escaped. Their is no way he would hesitate that much and to be sacrificing two soldiers who have done no wrong edges him to turn against the emperor.
Sorry executing the soldiers
It is a question whether he was accessory to murder, his guilt is not proven but it is assumed. The emperor was telling him that he should have known because he was a general and punishing him firstly, by refusing his request. At the same time giving him a guilty trip by making sure he knew that those men were dying in his place. Testing fate standing in between the two men he tests his loyalty with an opportunity to kill him by ordering the troops to fire on him as well.Knowing that Maximus was still alive was tatamount to seeking to kill the Emperor.
Indeed . He also made the praetorians obey what the general say which explain why they listened to quintus and not to Commodus in the final battle
"These are good men. Loyal to the emperor"
Commodus: I missed the part where that's my problem.
why I never watched this scene in 20 years is beyond me
Gladiator is the Great movie I watched it with thousand times.....almost all the participants are Great actors with amazing talent...
This movie is the best...Russell Crowe ❤
The drama of this scene is diminished somewhat by the fact that Quintus orders the archers to "fire" when he should have said "loose" or "shoot". It stands out and takes me out of the movie a bit. Even before I looked up the proper term, "fire" just felt wrong. This is especially surprising because they correctly use "loose" for the archers and catapults in the opening battle scene.
thing is that in real life they would have been saying it in latin so technically there is no correct english way to say it. I agree that it stands out a bit though
And also probably they didn't execute people like that. It looks like an adaptation to ancient times of a
firing squad
@@oliverparikian9536 , true, but surely the best way to say in English would be the way the military officers in England commanded to the archers to, well, release the arrows, say for example in medieval times before guns were invented :)
@@leonardotanca643 under Commodus (especially the movie version), they probably executed people in whichever way Commodus wanted.
wel they should not speak english to begin with so for the context of translation fire is ok.
Such a shame that in truly great films there are nearly always very effective scenes that end up getting cut. This riveting one is certainly no exception. And in nearly every case the deleted scenes only add to and enhance the overall experience of the film, not detract from it.
Nice to see these scenes. Have seen the movie 2-3 times, but never bothered to check this out Nice!
Gosh ! Joaquin's eyes ! (and voice and hairstyle and outfit and acting too of course...)
Stop please
@@julsc2106 You jealous bro?
@@julsc2106 I want him to defile me
This deleted scene explains the reason behind the ending. Should not have been deleted.
Thenguys born in the Phoenix family were both so handsome
*Bottom family
Should’ve kept this in, would’ve give more context to why he helped out Maximus at the end
the editors earned their pay
Great stuff. Phoenix wouldn't have been liked because of his skill in this role, but he did exactly what he had to do. Showed his skill here too. Should have kept this scene in. Hopefully Phoenix gets an Oscar for Joker
"the lady is finished with me" lol
Sideshow Bob I always wondered why the guard didn’t say that he’d wait for the lady herself to command him?
@anny791 true and the small bottle of their sweat, was worth more than gold in weight
Every "masochist's" dream.. To be used and abused by an attractive, dominant female then discarded.. 😂🤷♂️🤷🏿♂️
Didn't even get a BJ lol
The only time I've ever seen a movie accurately depict that holding a bow drawn back for an extended period of time is really really hard. Just a shame they said "fire"
In The Two Towers in LOTR trilogy the scene at Helm's Deep the old man couldn't hold his bow and shot and killed an Orc which started the battle.
Yep, it's in the extended cut I recently watched, was almost 3 hour long
I think they should have kept that it. It played into why he eventually rebelled.
They should not have deleted this scene. It explained why certain things happened and gave a reason for later actions as they were related to the plot and the message of the film as a whole in respect to society and human nature where in motives hide only to be revealed later as the primordial animalistic behaviors of humans.
I don't think on that period they say "Fire". It should be """"release. """
Minto S A it’d be “loose”. Great catch though. It’s surprising because they did correctly use the terms in the battle scene at the beginning of the movie
@@antoniabuffy perhaps that's why this scene has been deleted
@@antoniabuffy yes . Loose sounds better
@@MrZajicek41 i think i saw this in the movie. It was there. You can report the video as misleading
@@minmaxsa I don't think that period they say anything in English to be fair, they speak in Latin.
True story:
Joaquin Pheonix was initially very nervous on set, and before filming the scene where Commodus and Maximus have their big scene together, he asked Russel Crowe if he could rough him up so that he would be psyched up to shoot the scene.
When Joaquin Phoenix was cast as the joker, I thought of him as Commodus and thought, great choice. And he did not disappoint
Commodus' facial expression of gratification at the end, really conveys his insecurities as a leader
Damn this actor is so good. I wonder if he’s gotten an Oscar yet.
Soldier: aww man I shot the Emperor in the face...
such well placed actors in an amazing story of violence and love!! Russell crowes finest right here!!
joaquin is sooo handsome in this movie😍 those eyes and his stare
