CLIP DESCRIPTION:
To trick the British forces on the battlefield, the militia retreats over the hill where the Colonial army is waiting to fire.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Roland Emmerich and Dean Devlin, the director/producer team responsible for such sci-fi blockbusters as Independence Day, Stargate, and Godzilla, take a step back in time with this drama set during the American Revolution. Farmer Benjamin Martin (Mel Gibson) was born and raised in South Carolina, and fought bravely during the French-Indian wars. But since the death of his wife, Benjamin has renounced violence and quietly tends his crops, raising his seven children alone. In 1776, over Benjamin's objections, his oldest son Gabriel (Heath Ledger) joins the fight against the British. Gabriel returns from battle seriously wounded, with Lord General Cornwallis (Tom Wilkinson) calling for his arrest. A skirmish breaks out on Benjamin's plantation, and one of his children is killed as Gabriel is captured by Col. Tavington (Jason Isaacs) and sentenced to hang. Benjamin sets aside his vow of pacifism and rescues Gabriel; with the help of his former comrade-in-arms Harry Burwell (Chris Cooper), the father and son form a regiment of Carolina patriots whose cunning and ruthlessness make them heroes among the colonists -- and wanted men by British troops. Loosely adapted from the true story of Francis Marion and filmed on location in South Carolina, The Patriot was the first feature film made with the cooperation of the Smithsonian Institute, who advised the producers on historical accuracy. Joely Richardson also stars as Charlotte, Benjamin's sister-in-law who helps him care for the children.

When you played total war (empire and napoleon) and your cavalry did not listen to your command and rushed for a frontal charge....
See Cornwallis, this is why you don't let a Malfoy lead your cavalry.
"Prepare to charge! Sir we haven't been given that order. CHARGE!!!” Well, you have now.
"Tavington...damn him! Damn that man!"
How about "Malfoy, Darn Him, Darn That Man!"
The tactics portrayed in this battle were actually historically accurate, i love when Hollywood war films show the tactical side of a battle in a "Film" version. Not hit me over the head with history like some films.
Fairly impressive for farmers with pitchforks.
If Tavington did that on a regular basis, it's a wonder he wasn't court martialed for insubordination. As seen in this scene, coming into a battle at the wrong time can make a very big difference in the outcome.
Note when the Americans win its victorious music when the Brits win it sounds like Darth Vader stepped into scene
Would have been hilarious if they just let Tavington charge by himself.
"Send the entire battalion over that hill and crush them! It ends today!"
Hands down the best revolutionary war video ever made. It’s rare you find a movie where every character has a purpose, motive, and is well acted. Still watch it today.
"But my Lord you have taken the field!?" That guy probably should've been in charge lol he was cordial the whole time

This has got to be my top 10 battle scenes. The music, the shots just magnificent.
Can't believe this movie is 20 yrs old time sure flies
theres the deleted scene right before this battle where cornwallis literally tells tavington he wont tolerate a premature charge, dont know why they took it out, it expands on cornwallis anger in this scene

It's fascinating that they paid the extras to use real bullets to capture a more authentic feel during the taping of these scenes, simply remarkable!
Hundreds of Years later, Tavington was promoted to Field Marshal of the Soviet Red Army
