- Irene and Christian love each other and have been married for many years. To receive the blessing of Irene's family, they travel to Tanzania.
When Irene Thadei Leony announced that she had fallen in love with a German, her Tanzanian family was shocked. Her friends were also convinced that the German had ulterior motives. Despite their resistance, Christian Kreisel - an emergency doctor from Marburg - asked Irene for her hand. Married in a civil ceremony in Germany, they also went through a traditional ritual in Irene's home country to receive the family's blessing. Today, the couple live with their two daughters in Marburg, Germany. Christian dreams of moving to Tanzania where he wants to work there as a doctor - but Irene's unenthusiastic. What's life between the two worlds like for the family? A report by Udo Kilimann and Jule Sommer.

As a Kenyan who's lived in the U.S for 30 years, it would be a dream to have a spouse who wants live in Africa forever.
She's beautiful and he seems to be a nice bloke. Their happiness is all that matters. I wish this wonderful family all the best that life has to offer.
One word - humility. The man is just humble!
He knows what Germany thinks about him and his family. He’s trying to protect them at all cost.
What is germany thinking about him ehn? Mr. know it all
@@BabyJoy818 Yeah exactly , he's obviously an american
What is it you think?
I’m a woman of color who lives in Germany for some years and yes I know what you’re talking about… it’s called discrimination & racism… yes it does hurt and navigating that all the time as an outsider is very draining… having a connection to Africa will help the girls to have a strong loving, accepting foundation to have as a backup, at least I believe this.
@@BabyJoy818no disrespect but I’ve experienced Germany as a woman of color and I know what this man says is 💯 correct
She lived her whole life in Tanzania and does not see it for her children. He sees Tanzania as a new experience to practice medicine and help the people and new experiences for their children
And that's a problem.
I understand both their points, but I hope they stick together throughout it all.
Believe me living in Africa is the dream. There are great private schools in East Africa with great education systems.
The experiences one has on Africa is fruitful and enables one to empathetic compassionate merciful, kind in the west,it's the opposite
@@ladysafari01there are great private schools all over Africa is one is interested.
As a Tanzanian I understand Irine not wanting to relocate in Tanzania.Yet.Wanting her daughers to have the best education in German.
Also I understand her husband wanting to relocated in Tanzania wantinh her daughter to be close to nature.
-Wish both you and your family happiness.
I had to relocate to Africa alone though I have family still in Europe. I was burnt out by working there, I now live a minimalist and more fulfilling lifestyle, I was stresses living in Europe. Tanzania is a good country; I wouldn't leave Tanzania to live anywhere else on this planet.
My dream is to move back to Africa. Am tired literally

I know right when there is a will there is a way.

As an African living abroad, i would always choose to stay in Africa if the finances are available. It’s so comfortable there
It’s not comfortable, it’s not just about the money.
I too married out of my race as a woman of color and have children as well, and I can say to Irene it’s very advantageous for your girls to have a connection to their Mothers homeland! German culture will not be enough for them to feel emotionally, spiritually whole later on in life! Christian is quite right to want Tanzanian adventures for his children… especially with European discrimination, and social difficulties emerging more lately. Perhaps a nice compromise of a few years experiences & connection, especially while the girls are young…
I believe that the richness of Africa will bring good luck to your children. At least I pray so!❤
Excellent advice. The key word for Irene is compromise, for a few years.
I'm East African close neighbor of Tanzania. I'm living in USA and I'll kill to move back to my country with a husband who's privileged to make a living in my country.
I miss the daily beautiful weather in my country, the organic food. I suffer from Vitamin D deficiency on a regular basis and I have to be top of my levels to make sure they're efficient
My sister works with an International organization (East African countries, with 3 months in Tanzania on women/children health.
Always, my request is for her bring me the Tanzania peanuts and vanilla.
These peanuts are the most organic from East Africa, very tiny but loaded with all the best natural fats for your body.
The vanilla is absolutely amazing.
Tanzania recognizes the global warming problems and the government has invested in a different type of farming--especially with cattle. Teaching farmers to give land time recover upto years ...

I've been to Tanzania, Zanzibar and Bagamoyo Province. I hope to God that I will one day be able to return. I would love to leave America one day for good to go live there.

Irene has really mastered Germany, she speaks it like a language she has known,
Very impressive, the resiliency of Africans, despite her upbringing!! I feel so much joy when I see interracial marriages!
Most of us Africans master German in a short time because we need a B2 level to start a career, and we don't have extended families so we need to help our kids with school homework. German extended families are very distant. A woman also needs the freedom to go to a gyne without needing a translator.
@@nomxhosapekani7966--- '''Interest is the soil, in which knowledge and understanding grow''' Most people can learn a language if they have the interest. People like me, who does not have the full capacity to readily process a new language, has a harder time with it, still we try.
It's a matter of love and survival. The greatest motivations on earth.
She is in love with Germany and the life they live there. He loves her culture and has a love for all people.
You are close to the essence of the situation. Hope I am wrong, but if you look closely at their expression for the camera, body language and eye contact, it seems they have been discussing this for some time. Irene lived in a community with not many advancements, and her husband have had his fill of wealth and wants nature. He met Irene carrying something heavy on her head, understandably she wants more for her kids
@@deidradahl2802someone who has not lived rural whether in bad conditions or not but rural won't understand what you are trying to say her home town has a long way to go and her experiences compared to what she has lived now also bring her to wanting her kids live good,I live in my capital City now with kids we visit my village once a year but I find it hard accepting my kids to grow up there though I see my retirement taking me back home
Like you have said they have a different perspective of rural life depending on their experiences growing up most people might not see this they might consider her country as a whole being good but her mind is still stuck with her childhood which she doesn't want her kids to see
She is a gold digger. He is a genuine nice person thats the difference 🤷
@@Globus7791-- If she is a '''gold digger''' then he would be the first to know, as he is way more sophisticated than her, also much older. Irene looks like a model. Tanzania is a nice country.
Stop with the flattery. She’s very average.
@@kiuk_kiks You are jealous. It's OK to let your fangs show now and then.
She seems to be embarrassed by different lifestyles, yet her husband sees opportunities that are in Tanzania!!
Look how beautiful Tanzania is with such natural beauty!!!
Wish them a successful future!! Welcome to Africa permanently 🌍🥳
I don’t think she is embarrassed, it looks like she wants to stay humble so her village people will not think she changed and that she is better than her people
She's NOT embarrassed!! stop cooking up your own ideas. I understand her thought process. She wants a good education for her kids and also wants to help her village and not seem to be patronizing them at the same time. However, I also get where the husband is coming from, while living in Tz they'll be among the upper middle class. Enjoying warm weather all year round. Easily afford domestic help at an affordable rate etc.
@@mambofornasa She said so herself, she prefers the European lifestyle, culture and the better educational opportunities afforded her kids. Living in Germany opened her eyes to a more '''civilized''' way of life.
She's a mother, of course it's about her children
@deidradahl2802 they could get a better lifestyle in Tz that what they have in Germany
This is a long time planning which she doesn't understand
I spent about 50% of the time in Tanzania in the last 15 years and can totally understand the fascination. If you have a European salary (which I did not), you can have an amazing lifestyle but even on a moderate income (my own business), you can live well. People (most), climate, wildlife and food are wonderful and if Covid hadn't happened I may well have immigrated too. Concerns are medical care and children's education which are only available in the cities and very expensive.
He's gonna work in healthcare so i guess they got that expense covered
Why would anyone move from a 1st world country to there
You must be crazy
@@ArtVandelayOfficial Have you lived in both environments yourself? I can assure you there more benefits in Africa than in the so called 1 st world countries, for example, kindness and not selfishness, togetherness and not discrimination, cultural history and not the empty modern society, contentment and not mental health issue etc etc etc. So your comparison must be from a place of lack of knowledge.
@@nalunga64--- Well, tell that to the thousands of Africans who have been deported from Europe, or drowned in the Mediterranean seas over the last few years. Tell that to the Africans who have spent, and are spending thousands of dollars on smugglers, and keep saying, '''Europe or die'''

Perfect timing! Let me get comfortable for my evening documentary ☕️
It was a wonderful documentary about a wonderful relationship ... good luck and best wishes for that wonderful family
She’s gorgeous hands down. They appear to be a loving family. If I were them I’d probably split my time between Germany and Tanzania. It’s always good when possible to expose children to the world especially if it is their cultural heritage.
These days I don’t know if Germans have gotten any more accepting of outside cultures or those whose backgrounds are not European but for the mental health of their children they are probably better off in Tanzania these days. Europe seems to be taking a rightward turn which is decidedly anti-immigrant.
Wasn’t Tanzania once German East Africa?
I love how Europeans with free and open minds view and live life.
A man of principle, wisdom, courage with humanity.
Beautiful couple with adorable children. I think a few years, maybe 5, would be a wonderful opportunity for the children. It would be a terrible shame if Mom decided against that. Five years will go so incredibly fast. My son was born in Switzerland, but his Dad & I separated because of another woman, & I wasn't going to fight for anyone or anything, besides myself and our son, so when he was 18mths old, I returned to Durban with him. He's thrilled that he spent his childhood here as opposed to living in an apartment in Zurich! He did spend time with his Dad 4 times a year, and we've all always remained very close and in constant contact. PLEASEEEE consider giving your children the amazing opportunity of getting to know real life in Africa, as opposed to just brief vacations.
Much love and abundant blessings from Durban 🌞🌍🦈🦓

It seems that gorgeous Thadei has gotten a taste of "western living" and wants more of it. In time she may see that all that glitters isn't gold. If Tanzanians got control over their own country and its resources no native would ever want to leave such a beautiful country, and where so many of the women look like supermodels :) And there would be more diversity of thought if more of the native population weren't servants for foreign expats that have no intention of blending into the native population. which only leads to systematic apartheid and disfranchising the native people from their resources , culture and rights. Best of luck to this beautiful family. Peace and Wisdom to Them.

Africa has happened to Irene, when all you've ever known is poverty, sometimes you just don't want to be around that anymore
What a beautiful love story may god continues to bless their families
I wish Irene could see the benefits of bringing up the children in Africa, and perhaps move to Europe when they are older. Worked for my child quite well, and now as a teen we moved to the UK. She gets to experience the best of both worlds, but Africa and specifically Kenya, was the place to be in the initial years. Got her quite grounded. Stronger family and social structures, good international schooling. Plus you can live much more comfortably with a good income as compared to Europe where it's quite expensive. But then Europe has it's benefits too such as universal healthcare, free education, systems that work etc. Whatever decision you make, wishing you best. You make a beautiful family and couple
well may be in their elementry school years they can stay in Tanzania and after then go back to Germany after that

My mother in law is from Ghana and married a White Brit. For her was easier to live in the UK or US than back in Ghana married to a white savior with privileged mixed children who will be seen as outsiders. She is just now bringing my wife and her siblings back to Ghana as adults.
Possibly the same dynamic here.
Correct, also what some see as unique culture she sees as wanting to modernize. She does not want her kids to be exposed to that culture of doing some things at such an early age.
@@deidradahl2802 agreed. But I understand the husband's desire to help, that there is more meaningful work for him than in Germany, but they puts the pressure on his wife who has to shoulder the social dynamic that he can't understand.

Like he said, I hope they reach a happy compromise about where to live. If as a doctor he can provide an upper middle-class lifestyle for the family in Tanzania, that would be preferable. However his spouse also probably wants the economic opportunity in Germany and the better quality of life for the family and kids. I wish them the best, the kids are adorable.
May they experience the best of both worlds. ❤❤❤
