- Zimbabwe's economy has collapsed and many young people emigrate to earn money. Those who remain in Zimbabwe rely on remittances from family members who work in Europe or other African countries.
"Transactions" tells the story of migration in Zimbabwe through the eyes of one family whose members have been separated by the failed economy. Frank, who lives in Cape Town, and Miles and Portia, who work in Britain, support their family back home through regular remittances. At the same time, they yearn for their homeland. A fourth sister, Chrysthle, still lives in Zimbabwe and is unable to offer the family any financial help, despite her full-time job. Their mother, Mamilo, is the central point of contact for everyone in the extended family in Zimbabwe. Anyone who needs money comes to her, full of hope. But with every loan, tensions rise. Frank wants to help, but he resents it when his mother uses the money for things he doesn't agree with.
After the Covid-19 pandemic leads to hard lockdowns in South Africa and Zimbabwe, life becomes increasingly difficult. Mamilo urges her youngest daughter Chrysthle to follow in the steps of her siblings and leave Zimbabwe.
This intimate film documents the situation faced by Frank and his family. How much are they prepared to sacrifice to provide for their family?

This is so recognizable for me. My mom is from South Africa. Because her father was a Dutch man and her mother a Zulu they moved to Swaziland. My mom married a German and she moved to Germany where i was born.
Her entire life she would send money whenever she could to her mom after my grandfather passed way. My grandmother had to take care of many grandchildren and had no income on the farm in Swaziland besides some mais she planted. My mom payed for one of her brothers college, build a new house for my grandmother and helped a lot of family from here in holland. and in the meanwhile saving every penny to visit SA every year.
My grandma and mother passed away in 1997. Since then i try to help my family where i can. i helped my uncles, aunts and cousins. and its true that many think that you are rich because you live in europe. but the cost of living is that much higher than in africa.
Its a real dilemma. your heart is in africa but your head in europe. Africa is the richest continent of the world in many ways. The coming 30 years we will se the rise of Africa as a economic superpower. and it will be other way around. People will come to africa to work and send money to europe.
We need good leadership to realize that full potential that we hear about.. the Truth hurts but so far so bad!

That requires security of property. Something rare in developing countries.
South Africa took care of millions of migrants who have nothing to show till today.
I’m afraid it will be a very long time before Africans get to that level. African leaders need to empower the masses through education and investment in people but they’re just not interested. It’s a tribal culture, just like it was in Europe for hundreds of years.
As a foreigner, I can say the more you give to them, the more they depend on you to constantly helping them. Some of them don’t even care to work.

Don't say what you don't know please. Nobody works harder than we do. The country is out of place, that's why we seem to be calling all the time for assistance and support as the person abroad now would have done if the shoe was to be on the other shoe.

Why did you leave instead of staying home and working with them if it was that easy?
One of the many reasons immigrants stay poor. Survivors guilt. You have people who have worked 30+ years in good jobs but in retirement have nothing to show for becasue they were paying for peoples lifestyles back home.

Also consider Zimbabwe is isolated from the global economy the elite don’t suffer they switched to gold smuggling and money laundering but the average civilians level of life dropped drastically

This is such a beautiful film. Given the fact that South Africa has an immigration problem with Zimbabwe, it helps to give context to the experience of actual Zimbabweans.

Im Zimbabwean,I don’t really get why she has to go to Poland when she has no connections and no ties to that country.if they said come to the uk.makes sense she has siblings. English speaking country etc. I have been to Poland if you don’t speak polish or have a degree in a sector that is on demand. Your life can be worse than Zimbabwe its self. It’s tough being a foreigner. If your heart is not in it. Don’t even try it. It’s not for everybody. You need a stomach for it.
I know the mother sacrificed a lot to raise these kids but now they grown up l can’t help but feel everyone is obligated to send some money to her every month to be good child. So she has to go to Poland and earn to send money home.i think help should be from the heart
It depends on who lets you in.
This was a fault in the documentary, i.e they not going into detail about "why poland"? Is there a special scholarship scheme between Zimbabwe and Poland? Is there a relative there? Does their late father have friends there? Why Poland? The doc failed in that regard, and unfortunately, made Kiki come across as some kind of loser, which she may may not be.
@@francisokech I don’t think she’s a loser. I proud she went against family pressure. They want to send her to a land where she knows no one and she mentioned. If she’s on a tight spot she’s all alone over there. No friends, no family. There is more to life than just making money. Family and friendships are key to living a rich abundant life.judging by the looks of it didn’t seem like they were sending her to work a professional job but a low skilled minimum wage job. Minimum wage in Poland is soo small compared to cost of living

It is going to take at least four generations for Zimbabwe to recover from the effects of Mugabe's misrule, that is definitely for sure.

A beautifully made film which sheds light on the real struggles of people in the diaspora. The amount of financial burden they carry each and every day. One really has to be disciplined and say NO otherwise you’ll find yourself at 67 years old with not even a chicken to your name.
I truly enjoyed watching this documentary, it's always good to listen and learn from someone's testimony.

Sending money is our first name. Every time the phone rings, it’s not a matter of sending money but how much? The problems at home is so bad and sad that we feel so conflicted when we spend even a little money on ourselves. Our brains have become fast acting calculator that convert every money and the difference it will make in the lives of those left behind. It’s so 😢 😢😢😢

As an African I'm almost at a point of where I think we should talk to Europeans or Individuals whose countries are working to come and govern us again, because the leaders we have are really messing things. We need to make Africa work, we can't all move abroad the whole lot of us.
Reading your reply, as a European living in the US, I have thought the same thing you expresses (having European countries/leaders/governments govern Africa). Every country on the African continent is governed by their corrupt, inept, pathetic leadership which is why there are thousands of Africans fleeing by boat to Europe. I agree with @stanely-elmagico statement.
As a German, when I was a child I always thought "maybe they can elect a European who governs well and is not corrupt (democratic vote of course)". Now that I'm grown up, I fear that even our European politicians are the ones supporting weak corrupt African governments because they want to buy cheap resources.. it's depressing... the only hope is that after China and India getting too rich and expensive workforce, Africa will be the next continent to work their way out of poverty.
Politicians here talk a lot about that we need to stop migration by supporting the home countries so nobody has to flee from there but in the end their solution was to pay Libya and Turkey to not let anyone through (now I'm hearing reports from Libya about torturing and killing refugees...)
That will create more racism among ourselves and perpetuate the idea of Europeans as saviors. Blacks can govern, but people must elect those who genuinely care about their country and aspire for a better future. Not those who merely hype things up, but individuals with proven track records. What's essential is to address the governments plagued with corruption. No child should ever go hungry, and if that happens, it's crucial for the people to swiftly remove those leaders from power.
Im from South Africa, We always give advice, but foreigners don't want to listen, they will disrespect us and are lazy to go home, we South Africans have been and still fight through the struggle at home, that is why there is always progress here. We stay and we fix our problems collectively or individually. We Respect other peoples spaces and the law. We know that no one owes us anything out there.
@@dagerry I kind of agree that the solution to African problems might be adopting a far east model. How countries such as Thailand, Vietnam, South Korea and even China have been able to pull themselves out of poverty within a few decades. Only problem is our politics is entirely modelled on the west which is alright still but its not bringing out the intended results. Rampant corruption, polarization and economic stagnation. Lets see how the next few decades will look loke for Africa then, but optimism is running low nowadays

Zimbaweans are wonderful people. Who live in poverty. I personaly know professional people who earn between $200-350 USD a month. The grocercies prices are very similar to prices in US. They live payday to payday. They sacifrice for their children to get an education. All schools have tutition and they have to buy uniforms.
Money relative to the economy...well said. They should ease up on you. It is expected here that when you are old enough and you earn money you do not ask family to give you their money. For a dire emergency maybe, but that is maybe 2 or 3 times in a lifetime.

Really enjoyed this documentary it was really put together. So relevant in these times we are living in, if not for the help from many relatives staying abroad life back home would be unbearable, there is constant need for money it's a cycle one problem after the other. Much appreciation to those that are able to send money back home.

As a zimbabwen living abroad, i constantly visiting zimbabwe, things are hard in zimbabwe. Cost of living for 4 people is about $800 where as the avarage salary is $120 usd on the other hand unemployment rate over 80 percent

Europeans traveled to Africa and the rest of the world in search of greener pastures. Today the Chinese, Indians, Arabs move across the world including in Africa, Zimbabwe included. Humans have always traveled, migrated and will continue to do so.
At least they are not stealing, killing and plundering those countries like their ancestors did in Africa. The richest European countries have colonial baggage mainly in Africa, they built their cities with African resources, not earned but stolen.
The Family Back In Zimbabwe seems to live very well, with a Car,House,Tv and an Investment property All Paid from the Money From UK,SouthAfrica,Ect
However, that is not sustainable, it will take decades for Zims to realize that running away never works. Zims will suffer generation after generation, nothing will work until they go home and choose to live together in peace.

I can understand that everyone want to have a better life, but we all know that Europe has 7% of landmass and Africa has over 30% of landmass so there are limits, Europe is not made from rubber people :)

I live in Africa and I can proudly say that financially, I support my family more than my siblings who live abroad do. And many friends and relatives living abroad have asked me for help.
I really can't understand you DW. I am born European, living in EU. Of European origin. As I can see these people drive a car that I can only dream of. They have gadgets in their flat I can only dream of. I am retired, I don't have even one warm meal a day. I give more than third of my pension for heating, warm water...can you please tell me Where should I go? By the way, the total colapse started with Ukraine and...ah, by the way, do people who "know" about things in Ukraine, reside only at Kings college London? Because they are always on your television.

To make matters worse, they do not bother to fix their country. They recently had elections, and the ones I know didn't even go home to vote. The problem is collective within themselves; they don't want to change where they come from because they have become too comfortable where they are.
On the other hand, this causes a lot of slave-like labor because the majority of illegal immigrants in South Africa are exploited by employers who pay them very little, knowing they can't report it. Both groups suffer from these issues, and the resulting brain drain is mind-boggling. It's a lose-lose situation for African foreigners seeking a better life.
@maxbrod999 Keep in mind that all these people have sons and daughters or sisters and brothers that work in the EU. They can only afford all of these things because of their family members being immigrants, otherwise they'd be unemployed and poor

Just think of how often all the things they need money for happen,and then think about if they happen that much in your life. You then see how much they take. If £100 money is worth so much more over there why do they need these big amounts??

I came back to Zimbabwe in 2020 after living in England for 20 years and I've never looked back. I'm very happy being in Zimbabwe rather than being in a country where I never found acceptance and was constantly subjected to racism and discrimination. Africans should treat western countries as offices where they go to make money and then go back to their home countries when they've achieved their goals.
South Africa is built by Dutch people from Holland
Built by british and the africans were their workers. Dutch rose to power in the mid 1900s and introduced apartheid and blacks were excluded from the economy until the anc came into power in 1994
Why are African stories not voiced like the European stories that you do.
I really like the family unity and the idea of looking after one another.But Zimbabweans must stay in their country and fix it from with. Use the farms you took from the white people and be proactive and self reliant instead of being a nuisance all over the world.

Same problem in sub-Saharan Africa poverty, unemployment, corruption, etc. Why is this our fate in life? Who did we trouble ? Many of our land has natural resources, yet we, the citizens of Sub Saharan Africa, are poor. Our profession can not feed us etc immigration immigration is our only way out.

I really invite you to get to know the average Zimbabwean away from DW cameras or any camera for that matter. As for accents, as with any people in any geographical location the world over, South Africans included, one can pick up an accent as influenced by the people around them but that has nothing to do with changing but more of environmental adaptation. The average Zimbabwean I know loves the motherland with every fibre of their being its the situation that is unfortunate and is very tiring to the average person which has pushed people away from their loved ones and the land of their forefathers. Seeking better and pushing for means of survival speaks so much about the resilience and hardwork that makes Zimbo, than what you are trying to use to define us. That said, no situation is permanent.

@@nkonzozisongo2486 Wow, pride to hunger and to flee the country. ;-) Zimbabwe didn't loose the ability to feed itself because of sanctions but because of expropiation of those who knew how to work the land and giving it to people who didn't. The people and politicians need to take responsibility and do something about it. By just blaming others for everything nothing will get better. I hope for Zimbabwe that they will do it in the future and become again the breadbasket of southern africa or at least stabilize the situation to be able to feed themselves again.

Viewer interest is the problem, algorithms will prioritize western content over those concerning the African continent for those not living in Africa. Let me give an example, right now Africa has a civil war going on in Sudan and no one even knows about it but Ukraine and Israel/Palestine fill the screens each hour of global news channels. Africa and much of the western world could practically exist on different planets as far as interest is concerned.
