    Sublime. Les Troyens is one of the most beautiful operas ever written and this duet is just stunning. Both Graham and Kunde are marvellous here.

    I don't understand the nasty comments; I think both are brilliant. Pure heaven to me. I had tickets to see Susan Graham and Joyce DiDonato in The Met's premiere of Dead Man Walking next April which had to be canceled. I hope they re-schedule it in my lifetime.

    One of the most beautiful and heart rending love duets in the Opera World.Here two greats-Susan Graham (with whom a good friend of mine met up with at the Met,) and Gregory Kunde. Truly Sublime.

    Particularly nice to hear a version where one isn't constantly having to make allowances for the tenor.

    At 1:33 her typsy posture occurs because she has stepped on her gown and cannot move. She recovers brilliently with a turn toward Kunde and an outstretched arm to change her balance to the other foot. She then continues as if nothing happened and her singing was never affected. There is nothing wrong with the tenor. His musical and acting role here is one of tenderness and a joining with Didon.

      Love your detailed comments. On the other hand, I do find Kunde's personality not suitable for Graham's--in terms of sheer theatrical Strength.

    This clip might have been from a dress rehearsal? In the official DVD, Susan Graham doesn't look drunk at 1:30! Seriously, the Graham-Kunde duet is probably the best rendition out there, surpassing Troyanos/Domingo, Polaski/Villars, Verrett/Gedda, Veasey/Vickers.

    Couper ce duo une minute avant la fin ( l'apparition de Mercure) est un vrai scandale et une trahison de Berlioz ! On reconnaît bien là You-Tube !

    I always thought the final trio in Rosenkavalier was the epitome of sublime - until I heard this with Graham and Kunde. I wonder how much different if Graham had been teamed with Brian Hymel?

  • @skyhunk
    @skyhunk 6 років тому

    Exquisite! But to my ears Gheorghiu and Alagna are the winners in this aria. I've wondered if it's because they were married. At any rate, it's so difficult to choose because the singing is sublime from both couples.

      Please keep in mind that doing this thing live is a totally differing thing from just recording this duetto. So it is not really fair to compare this way.

      Nah, this is just a romantic Duo. If you want Sex in music (and you do not want to go for the obvious choice of Shostakovitch) take Berlioz’ Faust. That one get’s much more explicite.

    What's the rush? Gardiner conducting? Wow, this really does this music a disservice-I never heard it at this tempo-it's a love duet!
    Graham has a beautiful voice,a fine singer, she always fails to move me-some old fashioned acting here
    Kunde OK-how did he dare in the rest of the role?.

    • @Labienus
      @Labienus 7 років тому

      So you're being sarcastic?

    • @Labienus
      @Labienus 7 років тому +1

      I was. So I take it that you agree with me-it shouldn't drag, but it's no race.

    • @Labienus
      @Labienus 7 років тому

      Actually haven't looked around here for a while and I see you really liked this-I don't-how did this Kunde survive the rest of the role? I've never seen the music-have you? so to have an opinion "on how it should go" based just hearing different versions is not a good starting point. I prefer it slower because that's how I first heard it with Vickers, and later with Levine conducting, and the recordings I like....
      But I do adore this opera, and is the only work I'd put in the same circle as Wagner

  • @TheVaughan5
    @TheVaughan5 11 років тому

    Don't agree, their singing is lovely but Hymel/Westbroek are far superior as are Vickers/Veasey IMO. This performance tries too hard to be subtle and thus lacks passion, Kunde is simply too weak for what is supposed to be an heroic character.

    A lot of bad singing I've heard lately. But this is just too much. Absolutely pathetic. Gregory Kunde should have looked for another profession.
