Those who Need to crush new Players just have ego Problems. Feeling strong and winning against an inexperienced Opponent stabilizes self-woth (hope my translator didn't mess this up)... In the Long run those People lower their chances of getting another Opponent (maybe even friend?). And the word spreads...the first steps on the path "that guy"...

    My sugestion for beginers:
-Have a tutorial fight with 2 basic armies that are fun(like Orks). So that you learn the basic rules.
-Pick and army that is esteticly pleasing to you, and concentrate at learning that 1 race.
-Have a regular sized(500-1000Pt) battle with someone who is newbie friendly(AKA won't bring theire Uber meta units)
-Graduly learn what other units may do and the advanced rules
    -Have fun.

So far I’ve got a basic space marine army and at the moment I’m confused on melee but besides that I can definitely say I like 40K and playing my brother (also brand new player) is useful if only because of the “wait which stat am I looking for right now?” Conversations.

I think you will find if the new player has a Xenos army, the best thing to do is crush his force into the dirt and dust with the steel tracks and leather boots of your glorious Leman Russ tank company, all the while praising the Emperor and chanting Gregorian hymns. They need to understand that collusion with Xenos will not be accepted in the Imperium of Man.

I managed to get my younger brother into 40k back in 7th edition, T'au was his first army. By doing everything step-by-step, and explaining every special rule when it came up, and giving him some tactical advice with his units he got hooked into the game like I am. Now I got a brother to play against rathe pr than relying on myself.

@@jeru_jj1161 whats wrong with being conpetitive.... Im so confused like yeah fun first, but whats wrong with winning. He asked the right question in my opinion. How else will he learn what is good and what is bad in army composition. I think you guys for get this is a tabletob "WAR" game. Like I love the strategy aspect of this game and I dont have fun unless my buddy is trying to win as well. We both get better and better. Its fun for both because we are both still having fun. Not everyone likes going into a match for "fun". Whats fun about coming with a army with the idea of losing. That would be boring. Again nothing wrong with losing. Something wrong with purposly not caring and losing. Any of my wins were the person just did something for the luls and for fun even tho they know its a bad play is annoying. Id like to play the game. Not simulate a autowin with nothing fun really happening, and it being completly 1 way. Im just competative. I play the game for a challenge because I like war games. Nothing wrong with that and it doeant make you "That guy". Its easy to just label a competative person as thatand I think its dumb. Like there is a competative scene for a reason lol. Wish I was thw store owner. Id teach him well in sportsmanship and how to murder any army if he wanted. Nothing wrong with winning. JUST like how there is wrong with losing as long as both parties are having fun.

Never be embarrassed by your paint. The fact that you put the time and effort into painting them is worthy of respect. I see a lot of grey plastic or black-primed models on the tables at the local shop, so I'm always excited to see a painted army. :)

I agree on the paint stuff-you do indeed often see a lot of models that have no paint at all, so even bad paint elevates them immensely above those because suddenly you can see (even if it's messy) what the painter was going for and it adds a lot of character. And yeah, practise really does make perfect, though I've also found good brushes help a lot too. I've also never heard anyone complain about bad paint, just complement really good painting.

Really good message, makes me remember back to my first ever games I played with my stepdad when I was about 11, he took his time explaining everything that was going on and would explain to me why I might not want to do a particular stupid move. Even though I lost eventually the game was really fun and I couldn't wait to play again, he played with a love for the roleplaying aspect and the joy of the game which I think people forget about sometimes and only care about winning. The image of his expertly painted Dark Angels vs the worst painted Ultramarines you've ever seen from the macragge box still brings a smile to my face.

I have been out of the loop for 2 decades I returned just after 8th dropped, taking my 13yo son along for the ride.
We have been playing mostly 30PP skirmishes at my local GW in central London as I have been painting up my very new and very, well not so shiny Deathguard army, and my son, his Adeptus Mechanicus.
I have to say that both the staff, and the regular games there have nothing short of fantastic in their encouragement and support for the both of us.
It's been a lot of fun to come back to the hobby for me, and I have to say that the community has already been a major factor in that.
Anyway, love your channel, keep up the good work!

Good stuff...if you have an extra player around to help teach, it's even better. Did this last Saturday with guys from my gaming group for a new player. One of us played against him, teaching him what he was doing, and I helped the new player, with tactics and his army rules. Gave him options and risks without telling him what to do. He had an awesome time.
If you are worried about winning against a new player, you have already lost...and so has the rest of the 40k community.

I'm brand spanking new to the table top scene, I don't have any units yet, trying to decide which "start collecting" set to get (thinking nekrons). I, myself, am worried about starting and playing, since I don't have any friends who play or anyone I know that is interested in learning/playing with me. So I have to go out and find someone. My strat is to watch a few actual games, then introduce myself and ask if they can teach me to play with my army. I think ideally my small army would just be a side force to my teacher. I'll play along with him as he plays and my goal as a new player is just to do my best, ask questions, and my overall goal in my first game is not to make things worse for my teacher as they play, best would be I did well and helped them alot. I need to go in with the expectation that I'm not going in to win, I'm going in to learn.

I took 3rd place in a local tournament with my Imperium "Soup" army ( Militarum, Mechanics and Knights). I continued to expand my collection (still rocking the grey army though lol [no paint]) but I haven't played in a longtime now, mainly due to Papa Nergles plague, but I also still haven't found a regular group to play with. I LOVE the lore and stories though.

I do not believe in clubbing the baby seals. So, what I do it try to play a softer lighter Army (not my tournament list). As I am play I break down what dice I rolling and why "I am attacking with this tactical squad here is attacking your Guarders there, ( I measure it out) they have rapid fire so 2 attacks each at a range of 12", they have 5 models so 10 dice, with a Ballistic skill of 3+ so I looking for 3. I leave the dice on the table I slow it down separate the 2 or less, then roll wounds this weapon has a strength of 4 verse your toughness 4 so looking for 4+." I have the book on hand and show them the rules. Next I try to make it fun for them I cheer them on as they have good roll and do not cheer when they have good rolls. In addition, I film it and will review it with them after that if they like. I suggest tactic and stratagem afterwards. Next, I suggest models that with add to their ability to play (I also let them try new stuff with bases only).
Lastly I have extra army on hand if they want to just try it out before even buy an army ( I have Ultramarine, Thousand Sons, Grey Knights, and my daughter has and Eldar Army)So a lot of options for them to try.

This is why Warhammer stores have set-up starter kits so those running the shop can help show newbies just what the games are like, telling them what each move does and even drop hints on what moves they can make; I still remember playing the Battle of Macragge at my local store and the manager running it made sure to drop hints on the options I could go for, and I was grinning at seeing my Tyranid side beating the Ultramarines, that's what made me pick up a box of Gaunts (when Hormagaunts and Termagants came in the same box) and Genestealers that day.
Always make sure you explain to newbies in brief but fair language what the units can do, what terrain grants what bonuses or penalties and if they have their own army already, try and balance your side out so they have a fighting chance; it's more satisying to lose a game you fought tooth and nail for against a foe of equal strength, as oposed to just being unable to do anything while your opponent simply camped the whole game or overran you with huge tanky units in the first two turns.

I am currently 0-2 but both games I learned a lot from and afterwards my opponents sat down with me to go over some of my mistakes and both of them really encouraged me. I enjoyed the video, and it reminded me of when I first started doing WH40K. I was in 7th grade, and there was a Warhammer club in the school. I had no army, no experience, not even any of the books. But I was interested. The guys there had several armies, and most brought two of them to games usually so that they could help new players. The kid I got had a Space Marine army and a Necron army. he was still working out the kinks in his necron army, so wanted to use it himself, but let me use his 2000 point SM army. In the time it took him to explain the basics of what each unit (not each individual marine) and how they worked in the ruleset for army comp, he helped me set up, and told me flat out "I can't promise you will win. But tell me what you want to do as it comes up. Not your full strategy, just your current movement and action plan, and I will help you do it, and explain everything you need to know to perform it." I lost that match, and it took a lot longer than if he had played with some of the guys who'd been there longer. But he didn't make me feel unwelcome, or even stupid. Just inexperienced and with a lot to learn.

Reminds me of teaching some friends and room mates how to play Battletech. That game has some absurd number crunching that is very intimidating to new players. The thing that helped me the most was telling them "The game remembers how to do that for you. All you have to remember is which chart to use." During the first round I would go through every calculation with them, starting at the top of the needed chart and working down. They usually had the number crunching down by the end of the first round.

Ill often bring my tournament level army to my local GW and see if anyone turns up to play some games against to practice on a decent level. Sometimes a new player will then show up wanting to play a game and all i have with me is my full on face smash army, leaving me to either have the new player stand there and not play a game or playing a very much uphill battle. Its not always people thinking "oh ill just smash this new guy!".
Ive started to just say "lets play a thousand points then!" and proceed to only put 700 points on the table myself. Evens the odds quite a bit and i wont have to pull punches.

This is a bit of a niche reference but I always play games (including in tournaments, which might explain my win/loss ratio XD) of 40k in a way influenced by Tak (from the Name of the Wind Series by Patrick Rothfuss), you aim to win, yes, but more importantly you aim to play a beautiful game, and be the best player you can be. Don't go for the easy win in situations, go for the cinematic/skillful, go for the play and counterplay.
All the while being conscious of your opponent, explain situations, help if they ask, allow them to take their psychic phase if they missed it. It is really lovely to see people like Kiri having a similar sense of play, at least with those newer to the hobby!

About a minute in my first thought was, you have a massive SM army and he has a small Eldar. So set up a DnD style campaign with you as the DM, use the mechanics and introduce it like a tutorial, think the all guardsman party. Get some friends together with small armies and turn it into a session.

I remember when I was fairly new, had only just built up to my first 1500 pts army, and while comfortable with things like weapon statistics and remembering the toughness of certain units (such as the Plasma Rifles of my Crisis Suits being very good at melting Space Marines) I was still getting used to some of the basics, like, positioning and stuff; an example of that being a unit of Devastators with Plasma Cannons deleting my Crisis Suits because of the blast template, lol - I quickly learned to spread my units out better...
it took me a while to realise that volume of fire is more effective against terminators than trying to beat their armour save - I had more success getting 12 Fire Warriors in Rapid Fire distance (Devilfish cheese) than I did with Plasma Rifles from Crisis Suits.
I remember my first game against this guy using Dark Angels (and their plasma shenanigans) and he didn't patronise me at any point, nor did he hold back or take advantage of my lack of experience or whatever, he just said what he was doing, pointed out mistakes (sometimes after the benefited him... lol) and if I asked about anything he showed me in the codex or the rules or whatever - I experienced good gaming etiquette very early on.
Now, 12 years later, I help newer players at my local store.
There is a sort of unwritten rule in my local store (I'm assuming something similar occurs all over) where if someone is being a colossal douche-nozzle, such as bringing a competitive list or cheesing some rules against a newbie, we're breaking out the absolute filth of competitive nonsense - for me, that usually involves 3 Riptides, or some such other Tau cuntery; it essentially says 'pick on someone your on size'; I have a suit fetish... O'Shovah is bae...
As for how I personally like to play against new players, I lean towards matching what they have; if they have 3 troops options I'll have 3, if they have no elites, I won't use any, and so on - I try to make as balanced as possible and then gradually mix things up depending on how experienced they are.
In regards to people being reluctant about saying what they're going to do, the outcome is mostly based on dice rolls for fuck sake, lol - the fuck are they expecting will happen..?

I like your taste in guitars! I'd recommend trying a guitar with a P90 in the neck position. I'm more of a bassist, but I did love the tone of a Les Paul with P90s I tried out. Personally, I get on better with the Fender scale length and string spacing, and I quite like bolt on necks. So, my plan is to reroute my Tele for a stacked P90 in the neck, and some kind of overwound humbucker in the bridge.

I always found the best way to deal with newbies, especially young newbies was to allow them to join in an apocalypse game which used to be played at our local store at the end of the month.
We ( the boring old veterans) would not only keep an eye on them, help them with the rules, answer any queries they had and generally make sure that they went back to their parents having taken part in a big battle and most importantly had fun.
The store manager and staff always kept an eye on the game although my friends and l were all C.R.B checked and as one of my friends was a policeman and one was a school teacher and most of the newbies were his pupils there was never any problems.
    Could you imagine that today,??

For a new player, I like to just have fun messing around. I once played a new player and brought a small all-goblin army (no orks, no monsters) for WHFB. I also fielded a small all Eldar guardian army (Ulthwe of course) with no aspects, no wraiths and not even bikes. I find that this levels the field a bit and it gives me a chance to just have fun with an interesting challenge.
For a totally brand new player, whenever I'm playing a game at the local store and see a new player looking over my shoulder, I ask if they want to take command of a squad that seems cool to them. I give them the general battle plan and what that squads needs to do. I don't go too much into explaining the rules, mostly just telling them what number they need to roll. It's all about getting into the action (measuring, moving figs, rolling dice and removing casualties. I feel that this gives them an immediate hands on experience rather than a lengthy tutorial. After the game I go over the general rules and answer in depth questions.

In my case, when I played my first game, my friend played against me without any mercy and gave me minimal direction (besides rule clarifications). The reason is because we already did real-time play of each phases beforehand and he made sure I understood the rules for the most part before I played my first real game. I greatly appreciated, even though it was hard, but it inspired me to learn from my mistakes and become a better player.

I have very recently been in this situation. Luckily I've had a lot of experience with introducing people to a new game.
The new player explained they had been collecting Guard and had read up and watched videos about them. However they didn't disclose what was in their collection.
I decided to go with a classic match up of Guard Vs CSM and I went with the Shadowspear set plus some extra bits to make 1000 points.
When it came to the game, I clearly explained every step, every intent and what the results meant. I also explained some basic tactics and allowed for mistakes or re-thinks etc. The game flowed really well and the new player said he enjoyed the experience.

Just wanna say I got into the hobby a few months ago and the first game I played was with a buddy of mine, at the time my entire army was the space marine half of DI and I was running them as smurfs ( didn’t take me long to toss that silly idea aside my space marine boyos are now proud members of the first legion!) but my buddy decides to run some of his custodes , like two groups of wardens and I think a guy on jet bike, he creamed me in a turn but it was a good time. I personally really enjoy playing against him since he’s a more experienced player it pushes me to learn my army and my rules and to think about my turns more. Still have yet to take a game off him but our last match was so close we had to go down to kill points to decide the winner and he just barley had me beat.

So I am a new player, I just got my first few models, which I am still painting/assembling (Tzeentch). But I have played a few times before. A few friends of mine allowed me to play battles from 1-2.5 K points with their armies.
I generally felt welcome and I only won once out of 5 games, but after I did my research on which army I want to start with I realized that they did play optimally, but they fielded suboptimally. Way to many points for Terminator armor and they wanted me to see some cool stuff instead of the standard meta. I think that helped to get me into the game.
The worst experience I had though was at the 1K Point battle where the other player used Ultramarines with Guiliman and I had Eldar. Guiliman in 1000 points is way to broken to be enjoyable to fight against and he just ran me over in the first turns.
So here is what I would advice, if you are playing a new player in a low point battle: DON'T FIELD GUILIMAN. Oh and also don't let him field guiliman.

i think a good way for the first game is to play both sides. you get them over with u during ur turn and explain to them everything ur doing, why ur doing it, what ur thought process is. Then for their turn u come over to their side with them and talk with them about what theyre gonna do, tell them what u would do, why ud do it. So ur both playing both sides, the difference is they get the final say on what their army is gonna do and u get final say on what urs are doing. that way they start to get a proper overview of how the game is working the way a guy whos been playing for a long time has.

I'm someone who *LOVEs* the fluff read many of the novels but never played tabletop. So I recently got into it. I got it easy. I was in a GW shop and started with a full Custodes squad. The veteran player deployed a Black Templar force same points including a Dreadnought and heavy weapons. He was very nice and explained everything during the game. But I also already knew things from just going to the GW shop and watching ppl play & really I'd advise new ppl do the same because it makes everything so much easier. I was ofc completly inexperienced but still won, simply because it's the mothereffin Custodes lool and I won mainly because the guy properly explained everything to me without hiding anything, like if I made an error including the damage output from my side, he corrected it eventhough he'd be losing. I on my part told him not to hold back and go all out because I was just here to learn not to win. So it was beneficial for both sides. Both of us enjoyed it because it was simply an entertaining and funny game. It made *FUN* which is the most important part here. The funny part was when one of my Custodes speared the almost dead Dreadnaught ( I refused shooting it because obv Custodes, honor glory 1o1, h2h2 etc ... ) who couldn't repell/counter him but managed to explode in the guys face taking him with him and wounding a bunch of others in the troop - laughed out asses off.

When I used to introduce mates to 40k I would let them pick the army and minis that i would use, say they had a 500pt army, i would give them a sheet basically with values next to it and let them pick what I would use for that match, when they got more comfortable playing their army I would progressively make my army more and more competitive. Most people that I taught liked this way of doing things as it was not just me curb stomping them with an army designed to counter them and it was more me being handicapped so it was not massively one sided.

A good way to make a list for playing against a new player is to build your lists together so you both have lists of roughly equal power, and then during the game, remind them when they could do something better during the game, when they forget about an objective or when there's an easy chance to get one that they missed.

I actually don't play 40k tabletop but i got into it through Dawn of War and the books and general lore, which was originally fed to me by my friend who got into it the same way. The tabletop is something that's rather expensive and something i can't really afford at the time but is something that I've been interested in, with battle reports being freely available on youtube as i gawk starry eyed at everone's super amazingly well painted models.
I LOVE 40k and its something that i honestly wish i had in my life earlier. I think that the biggest barrier to 40k is that it takes both a lot of time in collecting and painting your army, time in getting the money needed to buy your army, and, well the money.
Honestly if i knew 40k existed when i was younger it would have made me want to make more money.
Also as a newbie strategy gamer i've learned you have to take your defeats in with your wins, so it seems strange that somebody would collect a whole army of awesome dudes and instant rage quit the hobby because they lost to a hard counter, but it's somewhat understandable at the same time.

I have discovered that if you do a teaching game with the idea that your opponent's/students interest are paramount to your own in this encounter, than whomever wins is arbitrary. I have also discovered that requesting switching army lists for the teaching game does wonders. It is a situation where they can see how there army list works from on offensive standpoint, without having to figure it out themselves in the moment.

Never played Warhammer but have played many others and we always had to declare of moves, partially to prevent people being "that guy who only said what he was doing after seeing a dice roll" and partially because you could say to a new player you can do that (or prevent them from making a stupid mistake.)
As for how to play against a new player, with an inferior force so it is still a challenge for you.
You don't have to play dumb against a beginner but you do have to give them a chance (and the experienced player is entitled to some practice)

One thing that I actually really like about new players is that they sometimes (due to lack of preconceived notions) do some surprisingly good things or take a rule or a unit that you have either written off or expect to do one thing, and they do something else... it doesn't always work.. but sometimes you are like "hey, never thought about doing that"... "nice!"... or maybe they just don't play like you expect and you have to react differently and adapt your play (vs say your regular opponent who you can predict their movements ahead of time)...

Its not about winning every time to me, its about imagining how the battle is playing out in my mind and having fun with the content of the battle, even if I lose. The main advice I'd give to more experienced players is to start simple and move up. Try running a basic patrol detachment againt a newbie with the same amount of points. Make it so that the newbie understands what your army is doing so they can more easily get a feel for the game. Thats what helped me out alot.

Told him I came to do a competitive list against a guy who couldn't make it due to work, so my army would systematically tear his apart simply because he didn't have the experience nor the counter measures to deal with my army effectively. Game took like 6 or 7 hours, with an hour for each turn as I took my time to explain to him battle theory and basic play strategy. He came back the next day and I didn't get to play a game that day, because he was questioning me so much on more advance game theory as he basically reassembled his army into something that was a pretty solid "Generic" combat list.

I learned working in the hospitality industry that pointing with a single finger can be seen as hostile. It is recommended that one points with an open hand.
Then again, in a small area such as a gaming table, that may be interpreted as “knife handing”. For those who didn’t grow up around their Vietnam-era, pissed off marine grandpa, this can be about the most terrifying thing a person can do to you.

He would take, Idk, good lists? I honestly didn't know starting out obviously and I don't necessarily remember. But I must have lossed against him, 10-20 times in a row? Never really beat him. But it was great learning experiences, because I knew I was playing the best. He would throw me some tips in game, but he would usually let me make a mistake and pay for it, then after the game, he would let me know on the things I screwed up on. We would talk for a couple hours sometimes after games. I think it made me much better at the game.
