The sergeant does tank a twin las cannon haha. They are very op in this but still the rest of it strikes me as a perfect display as to why the Astartes are absolutely terrifying as a concept enemy.

I imagine any 40k movie with any number of non-players, non GW, non hobbyists will have an inverse effect on the authenticity and attention to detail portrayed.

I mean, make a holy trinity. The grittiness and aesthetics of the astartes artist , the directing of storytelling from the helsreach artist, and then the fight choreography from the artist making the 30k film "death of hope". You would have an amazing studio right there for 40k representations.
Astartes is a more "realistic" representation of the astartes.
Helsreach shows the more heroic and glorious side.
That's the beauty of 40k's marines. Helsreach and Astartes belong on the complete opposite ends of the spectrum in how they represent the marines, and yet they are both completely valid.
It represents the clean, brutal efficiency of space marines, this is the objective, 4 space marines died, what ever, move onto the next objective. Professional superhuman killers.

I love Helsreach but it never seemed to scratch the itch for how a space marine should fight.
The fan film is a great example of "show, don't tell".

Astartes is proof of the immense creative talent of the 40k fans. I have never witnessed as amazing fan-made content in any other community.
Correlation is not causation. Astartes and Richard Boylan's work are total anomalies in the 40k community.
Star Wars is a contender, but they already have a massive props and cosplay industry behind their backs.

Its definitely what the 40k universe needs. Not overly "Bro-ey". The marines in this animation are not only warriors but theyre professionals. Loved it. Adds a sense of maturity that 40k is lacking for sure.
40k isn't lacking it; Marines are portrayed like this in the HH novels and other Black Library novels, it's just representation in animations/games and the pervasive "for the emprah" memes mean people less invested in the lore think Marines love yelling shit and don't get their job done quickly and professionally

I've read a ton of 40k and HH novels..and even a few audiobooks. But perhaps thats why my opinion may be a bit skewed in the novels you'll have a ton of dialogue and marines yelling litanies to the emperor all while the the midst of a life or death fight..especially with the audiobooks where they take that to an 11 with all the grunts and yelling and all that. Sometimes less is more though..and thats why I love this so much. It lets the imagery, audio design and combat shine.
@@huleyn135 I'm not saying its supposed to be anything...I just really enjoy that this was done with a lighter touch..everything in the 40k universe is done to a degree thats hard to wrap your head around. But it feels good to see someone paying attention and bringing focus to a subtler approach. Its the complete opposite of the classic, whole bunch of marines atop a pile of dead bodies imagery.

There are so many brilliant scenes in this series, but one of my favourites is the guy sneaking up with a mine, and the sergeant just casually stabs him without even looking at him, all while firing his bolt pistol in a completely different direction. Imagine being so far beneath contempt that your enemy won't even spare you a look as you get shanked in the guts...
40K Spacemarine: shows what a space marine can do in melee combat

ASTARTES: shows what happens when the Astartes play Rainbow six siege too much.

The main thing that gives me chills is that the marines are silent. I imagine it in two ways.
1. The Astartes are actually communicating with the internal vox connection in their vac-sealed armour, which doesn't allow the enemy to hear them.
2. The space marines are such consummate professionals that they do not need to communicate. To them, this is just any other day. Having drilled day and night to the point that even this seems reasonable. They know what they need to do and just do it without so much as a glance to their battle brother.
While the heroic yells and battle cries of each chapter are interesting. I always preferred the idea of the marines being silent. Unnerving, not human. Just staring down an avalanche or tsunami. Imminent and unstoppable destruction. That and all of them are wearing helmets. Like sane people. Added protection aside, this is also a great way of dehumanizing yourself in the eyes of the enemy.
The reason I like this animation is the fact that it shows just how strong and dangerous Space Marines can be to normal humans

When will GW give this guy enough money to make a short or even better longer film. This is the best visual depiction of the 40k Universe ever, bar none. The opening prelude mentions The Retributors Space Marine Chapters, which I believe is a home-brew chapter by the animator. I'd love to see a whole story arc featuring these warriors who fight in silence, only communicating via vox channels. So good....
Some of the best pure animation I have ever seen....BAR NONE. Like avatar quality, but no mo-cap, no physical sets, no makeup, no TEAMS AND TEAMS of people. Just a guy with immense skill and love for the subject.
A thought that occurred to me; since Space Marine chapters seem sometimes somehow similar to monastic orders, might be kinda cool if the Retributors took a vow of silence.
@@kaymarx9677 It's not without precident, The Space Sharks or Carcaradon Astra also fight in silence. And there are a number of Sororitas orders that also take vows of silence, including (not surprisingly) The Sisters of Silence.
You definitely see in the animation that they are obviously communicating via vox channel, so their doctrine is probably not to use war cries or shouts in battle.
It's so good, I love the "by the book, no mistakes" kind of feel they have.
and the running, that gave me chills. reminds me of the references to "transhuman dread" in the Horus Heresy books.
It’s awesome and I agree. What I like is the “any Tuesday “ aspect of it, it’s no heroic last stand against all odds, it’s just what they do, they go in, do stuff, go out, just another mission accomplished

Absolutely agree with you. The vid creator totally nails their terrifying efficiency. No standing with one foot on a rock, weapon aloft whilst pointing and yelling (though I love that nonsense too) - just supreme skills and finely honed tactical acumen. And his attention to detail is breathtaking.

well, you have canon examples of baseline humans actually managing to hurt Astartes, but usually there's a very extreme reason for that. Examples in melee off the top off my head, Ciaphas Cain managing to scratch an Astartes' armor because he's apparently very talented in melee, or in the First Heretic where a Word Bearer gets stabbed in the throat and bleeds to death because the Apocethary couldn't reach him in time and apparently he couldn't staunch the bleeding (the human that stabbed him that did get ripped in half though).
Of course with numbers alone they'd easily be overcome, a prominent example I love being the Word Bearers fight against the Elysians and the Mechanicus who even brought an Imperator Titan and an Ordinatus (however at some point the Word Bearers finish their warp shenanigans and did turn the tide on the imperials).
as i understand, this guy already works for a company as a 3D animator or w/e, he takes the little time he has left to make this serie, wich is obviously a work out of love for the IP. He's not a random fangirl who would jump to work for GW for a couple of bucks.
Also, it works so well because he puts a lot of effort in the little things other animator will not even care about that makes the action in general more realistic.
BTW my favorite frames are from the first rapid-fire burst from the upper railing... i need a gif. soooo bad!

People do overlook the fact that each battle brother in a squad has been through decades if not centuries of drills, training, and fighting. The video represents that expertly.
The 1st episode does something so well that sets the whole thing up.

After watching it several times i'm now working on Space marines holding there bolter's over barrel instead of under barrel for some rapid firing purging goodness.
I love that bit... When they brace the bolter on the railing, then the 'cla-clunk' of the 2 stage trigger on full auto mode. Its like a cross between an MP5 and a Mk 19 grenade launcher.
It makes the space marines seem like cold, PROFESSIONAL, killers. People forget that space marines are not just warriors, they are vastly experienced soldiers working with supreme tactical coordination.
Don't forget that First company/Terminator or elite assault squad marines are centuries old. And they have spent that whole time fighting.
It shows the Astartes as soldiers not warriors which is the tone that makes this so good
Can't remember a fan made project that was so universally hailed as greatness. This is the....Mona Lisa?....of our generation.
IMHO the setting also better captures what Space Marines prefer to fight as.
They create overwhelming local superiority in commando raids and boarding actions in cramped conditions to keep their own losses down, rather than to grind themselves down in open field battles where the enemy might be able to concentrate sufficient forces against them.
Their cold blooded silence was really effective here, but to be fair, for the most part it was just pest control to them. Still, i wonder what it'd look and sound like with e.g. Flesh Tearers. Their sirens howling down the corridors must be terrifying.
Frankly it's just too beautiful.
Seeing Astartes and the silence that the Space Marine have makes me want to see a Carcharadons series because of how they approach and handle combat.
By all that is holy, could you imagine the creator of the Astartes series showing Tyberos, the Red Wake, in open combat?

Showing space marines moving and performing in terms of speed, strength and tactics is absolutely brilliant!

Just watched the video a few hours back. It is so amazing, this guy really knows how to do the universe justice.
This person not only provides a brilliant visual spectacle but i think the key ingredient is the fact that he truly understands who and what the Astartes really are and how to portray them.
This isnt computer game spess marines where they shout for tha emprah and do backflips shooting nine guns at once somehow.
This isnt the golden heroes here to save the day, kiss the woman and walk off into the sunset.
This is the Astartes that most fans dont get to see as much, the grim reality of them.
It delivers the large spectacle while including the little things that really mean something, such as the use of wild tactics at the end to throw the enemy off.
Or when they charge in with a knife instead of using bolter rounds without hesitation.
Even the detail of how the shields and bullets function, the mechanical lack of emotion the soldiers deliver, even after they have won they barely register it as significant like its just another job completed.

Space Marines in their mainstream presentation are over romanticised. Let's have less of 'heroic knights in space' and more of 'surgical precision Spec Ops in space'.
You figure they only talk when the day is unusually different. The mission in Astartes is like your everyday "Boring" day at the office because they're just suppressing the rebelling nobility of a hive world.
Speaking of the movement.. as a soldier myself, the weight of full battle rattle is not commonly thought of and rarely displayed in movies/imagery yet we have to be quick while wearing it in just about every scenario. It's heavy but we make it work and power through. Seeing a super soldier moving while wearing full plated armor at top speed and what appears to be almost full range of motion was beyond satisfying to me. They are SUPER, not hunks of metal. They are tethered to their armor and the spirit within it and I would assume they could move as Hulk does on a battlefield, freely and in full control of their movements, as if the armor wasn't even there.
I truly appreciate Astartes for making that content and I will fully support in any way I can!
9:28 One of my favourite tiny details of Episode 4 is right at the beginning, where the Retributors are taking up their positions in preparation for attacking the two rogue psykers. There's the tiniest, almost imperceptible movements that manage to translate the idea that the Space Marines are talking on their closed vox channels and planning out the ensuing assault, and then the sergeant gives a tiny nod - and all hell breaks loose.

Slightly off topic but I'm hoping to get back into 40k with chaos models thanks to you and valrak tempting me with the great content you guys put out :) probably more collecting and painting but I may give gaming a go at some point.
Watching an Astartes in a full sprint was oddly just as satisfying as watching their knives find their mark
The way that space marine dove in with his combat blade was just amazing
As the psyker turns and uses their power maul to batter the pistol out of the Marines hand, *without missing a beat* the second Astartes shifts to a two handed grip on his combat knife to better drive it straight through his target's skull; not a spare movement, not an effort wasted, and nothing happens which they do not have a counter to.
Maaaan I love Astertes so much. I'm surprised you didn't go into more detail on the space-combat part. The look of the asteroid field, the defence drones shooting out to take out the missiles and the point defences that take out the rest. And the attack craft that dives in from the left, takes out the engines before jetting off (and dodging fire from the enemy ship) before the drop ship lasers its way into the hull. Amazing!
Seriously, give this man a chance to make a 40k film, and I'll be the queue to give them my money!!!!

this is like one the best things so far about warhammer if there was a movie with 0 lines id dig it like hell.
No dialogue, no sense of characters behind the armour, one of its great strengths as a short is that it makes the space marines as unknowable as their opponents, it's strength lies in its visual storytelling. It remains to be seen if this approach could be sustained for a longer piece where you'd have to have a longer, more complex narrative and some sense of individual characters.
I like how he makes them seem like they are immensely heavy, yet nimble, fast and strong. Very well done and I hope he gets a lot of support for upcoming films! Great Job repping him Kirioth!
That's really quite incredible. I absolutely loved the plasma bolt going through the cloud of smoke. I also loved the marines never said a fucking word, just went through everything in their way in as direct a manner as possible.

Best depiction of space marines ever. Even better than official sources like 'space marine' the game. I've never seen the speed of marines shown so well, they always move slow or at least clunky. This is exactly how I imagine marines to fight!
what i love about ASTARTES is that the space marines shown in this mini-series are more of a Special operations rainbow six siege style Chapter of astartes where they are all tactical and precise in their execution of everything they do.
this adds more variaty to the space marines because every chapter and legion has their own way of executing their own method of warfare and battle.
The thing is, it is what Space Marine are designed for from the begining. Even during the crusade, full battle of thousand of Astartes was really rare. They had from inception the philosophy of doing special ops stuff. And it is even more true now that any chapter can deploy at most ~100 soldiers on most battlefront
Some extra little details I noticed:
1) The Astartes Armor. We get a good look at their armor this time. When
the psyker has the sergeant pinned, we can see the chest emblem with
the skull being held in a hand, the wings and lightning bolts below
(possibly hinting that these Retributor Astartes are descended from
Dorn)
2) The knife design. Really damned cool. Excellent implements for
killing. There is a hole near the top of the knives which allows space
for blood to leak internally inside their enemies. Vicious. Plus the
eagle head pommels and the open hilt as if capable to attach as
bayonets.
3) The under garments of the marines look like some sort of vacuum
sealed mesh or mail. Excellent detail.
4) The little head nod that the sergeant gives to have his astartes
charge in and start firing is a cool little touch. Disciplined, well
trained super soldiers indeed.
5) The way the 2 surviving astartes just continue on with their mission
after killing the psykers. No sense in crying over losses. They're here
to do a job even if all they have left are a couple knives. [edit, the
comments below say the other astartes survived so when I re-watched you
do see all three other astartes enter in from 3 points.]
6) The laser burns all over the sergeant's armor.
7) You can really feel the astartes' urge to kill in their movements.
Excellent. He fight back and gets his gun past the shield, but losses
the gun and it seems he is resigned to his fate, then his comrade
charges and kills the one psyker and the sergeant doesn't hesitate,
kills the psyker, THEN wrecks the psyker. Awesome! This creator should
be making feature length films of just quick astartes missions.

While watching this series I realized that Space Marines do not always have to yell littanies or scream hate into the enemy to be totally bad ass. I got chills the entire time watching these episodes.
Astartes have got all sorts of fancy stuff that make them great soldiers in the open. But when their in close quarters; in an urban environment or the bowls of a ship, they truly shine as warriors. And terrifying weapons.
What if that space marine chapter took a vow of silence?
I could definitely see that. At the very least they talk between their comms, and have their sound sealed inside.
I have a theory that this fanmade chapter (retributors i believe) are considered or consider themselves the unholy warriors of the inquisition, and so silence makes sense. Notice, not only do they not have a SINGLE purity seal on their armor, despite clearly still praying for the blessings of the emperor and machine spirit... but, their job, even though they're astartes, their job is to mow down mortals. 99 times out of 10, astartes have something more important to do than kill mere mortal humans. If this is truly the retributors purpose, then i can definitely see them forsaking the concept of purity for the sake of their job. A vow of silence fits well. well.
imo when it come to fight cheography this guy needs to be the main dude. not the crap of screaming dying stupidly no TACTICS we WANT TACTICS ON SCREEN. story telling is a whole different aspect of movies and you dont need silent death but for stuff like this you totally need it.
its so perfectly telling how these space marines have timing down to perfection. positioning down to perfection. resilience down to perfection.
hellsreach simply doesn't show that. it shows the emotions behind everything and honestly less is more as astartes has shown us all.
You exactly got it mate ... the books & lore paint a picture of a terrifying, unstobable force and this animation represents that perfectly
I am a huge fan of Kill Team as i enjoy skirmish combat a lot more. Watching Astartes felt like watching a Kill Team match (with The SM player rolling only 6s, but whatever) and i just loved it. Moreover using Space Marines as Spec Ops feels way more appropriate than throwing them in the meat grinder that is large scale combat. Astartes has become my absolute favourite depiction of Space Marines.
It was great to get a series of videos where they show exactly how destructive, fast and powerful a Space Marine really is. I'd love to see this guy do a full length approved film.

Thanks for bring my attention to this little series its actually amazing! Episode 2 is my favorite 100% what you'd expect from Astartes smashing into a ship and just accuratly taking out anyone they need too!
the thing I love the most about Astartes, is how they show one side of the Marines that is rarely shown, it's how efficient they are at dispatching enemies, for them, this isn't even a fight, it's just a clinical purge, room by room, step by step, one shot, one death, it's all so eerie and quiet, it's precisely why the people of the imperium worship the Angels of Death, for if they fail to honor the emperor, his Angels of Death will come for you.
That part was one of the most heroic and tense scene I seen a Space Marine take on those xenos cultists psykers, like the Blood Ravens from Dawn of War I & II intro cutscenes.
Astartes done good work on the cgi animation
I want to add to the professionalism: In episode three you see a brief moment where they deploy from their dropship. Some of them walk away, some sprint. They have a plan of attack and follow it to the second, they know they don´t have to run to be on target when they need to be on target. They will be there. When they are running through cross fire, one of those very mobile tanks stops, takes care - while the others move on to position - and then catches up. They are not delayed. All squads arrive at the psykers just right on time to take them into crossfire. The atmosphere is intense, but the detail this series has been executed with so far, is more than amazing.
And I want to add: No ridiculous two handed energy weapons. They are a couple of squads of really "normal" space marines, and you just realize how far away they are from being a normal combat unit.
Astartes is easily the BEST 40k thing I've ever seen. Granted, I have never played the actual tabletop game, and my lore knowledge comes mainly from wikis. But from what it has, the only thing I can think of that was wrong, was the way the Astartes ran. And given everything it has, that's really something, if the RUNNING STYLE is the only thing many can come up with to criticize.
That dark scene is two shots because there are two soldiers, gunner and loader. Also you can just see the marine sneak up on them in the muzzle flash strobes.
I really hope the creator will make a Making-of video after the 5th episode to be honest.
He's really doing an outstanding job.
what I loved the most were the little details, like the ribbing and texture in the gloves and on the handle of the bolt pistol. So much attention was paid to something which could have been easily overlooked
4:44 now hooooold it right there kiri, that's two flashes for two dudes in the gun crew, actually. but yes, Astartes. mind blowing.
I only saw one crewman and assumed the second shot disabled the weapon (just in case someone got around them through a side corridor, I certainly wouldn't want that autocannon behind me).
It shows how proffesional SM are, clean without hesitation or remorse. Just professional killers... chilling sight.
The way he has depicted the brutal efficiency of space marines is perfect. And the atmosphere, sound and lighting lend itself to it perfectly. But this type of cinematographer doesn’t really lend it self to a full movie or larger project bigger than a short clip or 10 min vid. There aren’t any voices, character building or personalities given to the space marines, which is fine for the context of the clip, they are brutal efficient killing machines. But I do wonder if the creator would be able to work in these other aspects required for a more fully fleshed out project effectively if given the chance to...(for those of you calling for him to lead a 40k film etc)?
It's all in the details and the animator kills it on the details. From the lens cracking and having not one, but what, five lenses? The dual action triggers for semi and full auto, the sub vocalized commands, the reaction speed, superior hearing, strength and endurance. The fearless nature of marines. Oh, a multilaser, lemme just stand here for a second to see if I can just kill it , nope, smoke grenade, plasma pistol, bang, done. Another thing he shows that is kinda lacking in most other animations of Marines is fluidity. These marines both carry weight but are also very fluid and natural in their movements. It's not an easy combination to pull off, especially in the ridiculous proportions marines have had pre-primaris. The sound is also way better than anything before it. It carry's depth and does a great job of conveying the size or intimacy of the sounds. Loud empty spaces sound...hollow. Tighter shots ramp up the detail of the sound and sharpness of it. It's wonderful sound engineering.
All in all, this is the best 40k video we have probably ever gotten. Some of the DoW cut scenes were very well done as well but this is straight cinema quality.
Let's be honest, despite how the games depict them, lore had them as walking tanks with aimbot and bullet time.
From Space Marine to Space Hulk: Deathwing, everything there that wants to kill you are stronger, faster and tougher than an average human can face. Genestealers are already fast as heck, and you could interpret their speed in Deathwing as the Terminator being able to track their movements, wherein reality, they'd be like a blur in our eyes before they kill us.
That's why I love Astartes, from the moment they step out of the boarding pod, to when the knife sunk into the last psyker, they've been moving with such heightened and fast mental focus, and skill. That for every singular pull of the trigger or burst of their bolters, one round each killed a person. No waste, no misses, just death as they walked through the ship's halls.

It's simple they are fast! Evey time you see marines even in the game space marine they are slow, these are faster than a man, harder than a man, and simply terrifying.
Great video! You are so right. They are Brothers, totally focused, trained to max., and in Astartes you see, what they are capable of. Six Marines work together as a single wave of death. And even the biggest challenge won`t stop them. This is the essence of the Codex. And that is why it is Badass.

I think the most important part of astartes to me is the competency of the opposition. The ship crew are determined, prepared and cohesive. They ambush, fire through their own men and generally give a dangerously competent response.
Yet it's not enough. That is the crux for me, the space marines efficiently and brutally pick apart not incompetent faceless mooks but a well organised opposition.
In their competency, the enemy only serve to highlight just how superior the living war machines of the astartes are.
*THIS* the traitors are clearly very skilled and well coordinated but the Astartes still just blow right through them.

Oddly one thing I really like is the lack of chain swords. As you mentioned the knife has a time and place. GW will often show off the shiniest toy, but this takes away from horrific level of power their normal weapons are capable of. Not have Thunder Hammers and chainswords or anything more advanced than a single plasma pistol, really shows how "normal" space marines are terrifying.
No dialogues, No drama bullshit, just pure action. That's one of the reasons why its amazing.
This is how you make an action scene in an extraordinary setting, you don't get stupid and ask people to get over it, "it's just a fantesy so it's impossible to make it make sense" , so many mainstream movies do this and people just defend it to no end, You can make them awesome and make sense but you need to have someone that uses his brain in charge

Fully agree that Astartes is the best depiction of 40k to date. In everything else, they move like they're just guys in big bulky armor. In Astartes, they actually move like genetically enhanced cyborgs in power armor. Scary fast and powerful.
Richard Boylan (Helsreach movie) ended up getting a license for an animated series, would be a dream come true if Astartes got something like that too. GW could start the trend for other IP's. How to avoid the cliche of shitty movies based on games? Easy. Just pony up some money and let the fans do it.
The strongest aspect that Astartes has to me are two things, the script and the tone. Everything is clear and understandable. you know whats happening at all times through each episode. The tone I feel is very important to the series because its very precise. The Space Marines have a specific look the enemies have a specific look. and there is no indulging in the over the top nature of the IP. what I mean is if you replace the enemy with chaos cultists or gave the space marines chainswords the tone would instantly fall apart. There is a very fine line between going over the top silly with the property and being serious and this guy walks that line expertly.
It is just the best depiction of how a Space Marine behaves I've seen.

It's the purity of purpose that blows me away: There isn't a second wasted on superfluous action by the marines. There's no hesitation, just controlled fury being used to get the job done in the most economical fashion possible.
I saw this said in one of the astartes videos, but not only the space marines themselves, but even their enemies are presented in an amazing way. The rebel guardsmen are really trying their damnedest to kill these guys, tossing everything they have at them, using weapons that would make modern weaponry look like pea shooters and they STILL can't bring the astartes down. The psychers in particular came off as especially horrifying, as if they were more than a match for the squad for a moment there. It totally sells how powerful a psycher must be in this universe. They aren't just "space wizards" they're beasts in their own right capable of even taking down an astartes in single combat.

What you were saying about the space marines speed size and armour not mentally computing just reminded of somthing from the horus heresy book series, apparently theres a neurologicacal disorder that somtimes crops up in the remembrancers and imperial guard that witnessed the astartes fight called transhuman shock. Where regular unaugmented humans inability to comprehend the Astartes inhuman speed and prescision "described as being like a striking cobra" if I remeber right dispite there size caused the observers shock.
