    I just made this as I was feeling really heaty. Thanks for the receipe. Was great, although I didn't have any pandan leaves or syrup so I used 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract and cane sugar instead. It isn't as good as pandan but it does give a bit of the similar fragrance. I also omitted the soaking stage as I was in a hurry. Seems to work ok if you boil it a bit longer.

      Hi David T, thank you for trying this recipe 😄 Yes, vanilla extract and cane sugar works as well 😄 It is okay to skip the soaking process if it will be boiled longer - the important part is the barley should be soft & tender 😄 Thank you for sharing your experience 😄

    I normally pressure cook it 12- 15 min depends on your preference. No need to soak. The longer the time the softer it become.

      Hi Bony Ho, thank you for the question 😄 I have not tried it myself, so I'm not sure what the result would be. If you would prefer to drink the barley water/juice, I would suggest to strain the drink after boiling to remove the boiled grains.
      If you prefer to drink it all, I would suggest to blend the grains after the barley water/drink is cooked. Do note that the barley drink may not have much taste after as it would resemble porridge/ congee. Hope it helps 😄

      Hi 7459serenity, Yes I kept the extra (in a tight container with no contact with water) in the fridge for about a week. Once store them in the fridge they tend to become thicker and more concentrated. I just take about 1/2 a glass of barley water and add 1/2 a glass of room temperature water if I want to drink cold, and add hot water for a warm barley drink. It tastes so good. Hope this support your question. Thank you.

    • @HomeCookingwithSomjit
      @HomeCookingwithSomjit  3 роки тому +1

      Hi Kuro92, thank you for the comment 😀 So far, I'm familiar with white sugar (simple syrup), brown sugar, honey, paste sugar and gula melaka (palm sugar) as sweeteners. For this recipe, I've only used simple syrup, and have not tried the other sweeteners, so I'm not sure how it will turn out if white sugar is substituted.
      Perhaps you can try with brown sugar, however, the measurements will have to be to taste as brown sugar is less sweet than white sugar. Cane sugar is also an alternative. Hope it helps 😀

    Oops I never soak in water before I boil

      Hi Youdontsay. It's an optional to soak it before cooking. As for me I find it's better to soak it as the barley become soft faster than not. Thank you for the comment 😀😀

    Why have to add salt.

    • @HomeCookingwithSomjit
      @HomeCookingwithSomjit  5 років тому +1

      Hi Lotus Chang, adding salt is for taste. Slight taste of salt make the barley drink taste better. However, it's totally optional for the salt. Thank you for the question.

    why does my barley float when it hits water?? I think I'm scammed😮

    • @HomeCookingwithSomjit
      @HomeCookingwithSomjit  5 років тому +4

      Hi Jovianna Alexandra Johnny, barley seeds normally sink down when poured in the water. In case any of them floating you can simply stir in together. However, if the seeds still remain floating, this should be taken out and thrown away as it may be too old or already gone bad. Thank you for the comment.

      Hi laila fatima, thank you for the translation 😄 This barley is known as "pearl barley", in which the barley has been polished until it resembles pearls. In Malaysia, pearl barley is the most common type found.

      Barley and wheat calories go hand in hand. Barley is low glycemic compared to wheat. In old days, my country's poor population would eat barley as it was way cheaper than wheat due to thier believe of it not being as nutritious as wheat. Though modern research tells us it is as nutritious as wheat.

      Suren Maari: Somjit has gone through great lengths to generously share her many cooking receipes for all who are interested to try a hand at cooking!
      Being a Thai, it's expected that she would have a foreign accent which actually, is not difficult to comprehend. Nevertheless, her vivid videos 'paint' a million words!!
      We should appreciate, be grateful and respect her voluntary deeds.
      I repeat RESPECT and not RIP! 😙
