This is not a stud gun job really. Start with big suction cups (real ones, not the toys the kids have today). Then move to wiggle wire and body keys (modern version of old fashioned washer welders). THEN use the stud gun for the smaller stuff.
Although, frankly, the use of glue plates here, in my opinion, is a better way.
The PDR guys have a lot of really amazing and innovative toys. If I was still doing repairs this big, I'd be adapting many of them into my tool box of skills and methods.
(For reference, I came out of retirement to metal finish small flaws on the assembly line for a major auto manufacturer...so I metalwork every day. Its just super little stuff now. I never really get to do big repairs anymore)

    • @KWW0321
      @KWW0321 Рік тому

@@VanishingNomad Yeah I would have used body keys forsure, it would be an uneven mess with using just a single point contact stuff welder. One of my guys prefers wiggle wire and hates the body keys so to each their own I suppose. I have the pneumatic cup system but never use it anymore after letting the keco glue pulling setup in my shop.

I was a Toyota technician in the late 1980's early '90's and first saw this method used in the body shop.
PDR works a lot better/easier on the more modern 'thinner' steel panels and the hot glue has gotten a lot stronger since then and easier to remove.
We also had the welded pin/stud system for the really bad cases.
You couldn't get hold of replacement panels from Toyota at a reasonable price back then as they were shipped from Japan.
Not able to 'work' anymore due to broken neck but still do as much as possible on my own and neighbor's cars.
It helps to keep me active and occupied.
I also use home made wood 'dolly's' to help prevent more paint damage.
When heating the area I use an electric heat gun, rather than a flame torch.
Nice to see the old panel beating skills still being used, rather than simply replacing with new ones, it works out quicker and cheaper in most cases.

I’M NEW!!! 🤓 I find this so fascinating! In Sacramento I once heard about a *new* shop with a bunch of German guys in lab coats that would use rods and leverage to work dents out, they said it was “the latest method from Germany”, that was like 15 years ago. I always wanted to see them work, I think the old way of replacing panels, beating panels or filling dents with bondo and painting is archaic… This is cool! 😎

Ive been a pdr tech all my life 25 years old now and started when I was 7 (dad is a retired pdr tech). This is absolutely crazy man. I’m a route tech and service mostly dealers with a good amount of retail and a couple hail cars a month. You are diving so deep into pdr and completely blowing my mind. I have 5 stars on google and consider myself and my partner to be reasonably good due to the satisfaction of our high end dealers we service and minimum complaints received. I honestly can’t believe you made that look so good and I always knew there were guys better than me and guys worse than me. But I’m pretty confident saying that you are one of if not the best techs I’ve seen. I love watching your videos and aspire to be able to branch into more collision pdr. If I came across a dent like that at a dealer I’d turn it down and if it was at a body shop I’d push to paint it. But no way in hell I’d be able to finish it. But I guess I don’t actually know I’ve never spent 12 hours on a dent lol. Keep up the good work man, you rock!

Been doing dents for 12 years now. I’ve never gotten into the collision tab systems. Like Keco or the one you have, but I really like seeing you kill these massive dents. Very impressive. And no. I wouldn’t have taken on a job like this, most likely. Unless it was Push to Paint. That’s always easy enough, and I don’t have a shop, yet.

Man, I've been living with a big dent for years, the body shop said it would be a $6,000 repair and I just didn't want to do it, but you make it look like I can do this at home with enough time and the proper tools!

This is the second video I watch for you and I'm absolutely amazed. You're incredible!
For my DRP, I would've had to replace the panel cause the repair time would've been to high. But if it wasn't for DRP, I would've fixed with a stud puller and obviously would've had filler and to repaint. After watching this, I feel I've been doing it wrong this whole time.
Thanks for these videos and keep it up! I've got a lot of research/practicing to do.

Absolutely awesome talent. I wish you were closer. I have a dent on my Mini Cooper and haven’t taken it to a shop because I don’t want it grinned and bon-do on it. I prefer to wait and find someone with those talents where I live. Great job 👏

I’m a retired pilot, and a couple years after retiring got the big renal cancer word. Lost my rat kidney, chemotherapy, etc. getting around, but nothing like I was. A short time after retirement, I checked in on trying to fined out on how I could learn how to do your kind of work just to stay busy. First time here, MAN OF STEEL! Nice stuff! Congratulations on a great job. Ronnie East,Tennessee

Back in 72 mom sidestepped a post painted chrome yellow shorter than the sidetrim a nice dent w/o creases I put thick oil on the edges of a good bathroom plunger then I worked from on end to the other pulling out the dent. It took much longer to remove the yellow paint smere but looked so perfect no one noticed 3 years later when she traded the dark green cutlassc/s for a new buick regal. Of course yours had a pretty bad crease up near the area of license plate. You did a really great job inventing every piece of that set of tools. Each piece perfected by trial. Maybe your steel inventing and tweeking to make more adaptors for other situations or materials
I highly respect all great craftsmen/women who are helping workmen/women do their work easier and better. k

Was a body man 40 years ago, my have things changed. No way we would have attempted this in a professional shop. We would have replaced it. Hoods and decks we always leaned to replacement. The skill shown here is tops. If we did fix, it would be slide hammer to get it close then grind and fill. It is nice to see this level of skill.😀
