    Good bit of food for thought Dr Dan.
    I know our instrument is unlike your typical 'mechanical' instrument, such as the piano, but in learning to master it the general approach is comparable.
    That is, work on what you are able to do first, in the case of piano technique, easier scales, separate hands etc. then progress to steadily more challenging ones.
    I'd love to easily leap up to the high C's vocally, but would quickly fail and become discouraged..so starting where my voice is most at home and building on that makes for a very solid foundation ( all puns intended).
    With time, I am more confident that those trickier ends of my range can be attained , and my voice will actually be ready for it!
