I worked 40years on the busses in Birmingham and believe me you wouldn’t believe what went on and how close the series was to real life.

I worked for only one year in 1968 -1969 for Oldham Corporation Transport. In that year I personally did things I don't think "On the Buses" series ever covered. For example there was a certain bus route that went up a rather steep hill and I used to have a laugh by ringing off the bus at every stop then jumping off the bus and running up past the bus (I was a fit 18yr old lad back then) waving at the driver as I passed him then got back on at the back of the queue at the next stop and so to the top. I also once died my hair jet black for a £5 bet (a lot of money back then) . I had just been issued a new uniform and decided to go buy the hair dye by continuing on the same bus I had just finished my shift and had a changeover on. The Chemists shop was half-way between two long stops on Moston Broadway (for those that know it) - not wanting to have the driver fully stop so i could get off when near the Chemist to told the driver to slow the bus down and I would then jump off backwards when I gauged it safe to do so. my last sight as I jumped off backwards was glancing at the speedometer and seeing the bus was still going at 35mph which was substantially slower than it had been going but not exactly a safe speed to pull that trick off on! I then arrived in the Chemists shop with my brand new uniform torn in some places and somewhat bloody too (after doing somersaults on pavements and tarmacadam!). My cvoncentration wasn't what it could have been and therefore I did not notice that I had bought a permanent jet black hair dye instead of a rinse! After I had dyed my hair and realised my mistake (I looked very pale indeed because my natural hair colour is ginger!) I had the "brainwave" of putting a red rinse of top to make my hair colour at least uniform. What actually happened is that the rinse seemed to react chemically with the permanent hair dye and so in the summer of 1968 I was possibly the first guy with multi coloured hair well before the punks later in the 70's!! I was also a bit of a hippy back then and used to put lit joss sticks all over the bus.
I also loved to play little practical jokes on the passengers. One day for example I was the clippie on the Upermill to Manchester bus service - this was in a very cold December early morning back then - what made things worse is that the bus passenger heater system has broken down resulting in icy windows (it was well below zero then) so I had a brainwave I took off my overcoat, Tunic and tie and started to take fares with my top shirt buttons open and pretending to be profusely sweating as I took their fares. The driver later confessed to almost coming a cropper when glancing in the mirror to see the passengers reactions.
There is a lot more too but I missed the best bit - I was 18 yrs old in that Summer of 1968 and mini skirts were still the height of fashion. Those were the daze!

When he said about them following a bus in the car and then the furniture being unloaded from the bus I could just see him going up to them in full Blakey character "I've gotcha now haven't I eh? I've gotcha! You'll get the sack for this Oh gawd this has made my day!

A few weeks ago, I was on a bus in Sunderland, and an inspector was waiting at the stop. A loud voice from the back said, “Oh Christ, it’s Blakey!”, and we all laughed as we rummaged in our bags for our tickets.

Blakey is the absolute best he’s my most favourite comic out of everything and any comedy program.

Blakey represents a very laudable characteristic - ie someone who doesn't just "go through the motions" but someone who wants to feel at end of their working week that they have actually earned their wages. Others less scrupulous are virtue signalling hypocrites! I was clippie for one of the latter kind during my stint as a clippie.
He was a bus driver when I first worked with him but he was very shrewd and understood "optics" very well. If you ended up on a shift with him he would come and "have word" with you in advance. He would demand you wore a clean white shirt and tie in return he would absolve you from bell ringing as he would keep a close eye and those alighting and departing so that all you had to do was focus on collecting the fares. That said he knew every trick in the book for dodging a route he didn't feel like doing on a particular day! Before I got fired (another story for another time) he succeeded in getting promotion to inspector. He made Blakey look like a real pussy cat because that bar steward knew every trick in the book!

After this, Stephen Lewis appeared in "Last of the Summer Wine" as Smiler, using the same "voice" he used in "Buses." I didn't know what Stephen's real voice sounded like until recently.

Easily my favourite character and what was a delight to hear is how he created the perfect back story for his character and also welded it with his own life history (i.e. ex army etc). I was a "clippie" back in 1968 and I can tell you there is nothing in that series that we hadn't done or worse in real life!

I lived in Johnstone, Scotland, and were across the road from the double decker bus station in 1970 just before we immigrated . And the buses had a lever on the outside of the double doors which we turned the other way to open the doors and pinch the rolls of tickets to throw over the trees by the Cart river , pointless but great fun at the time..🤣

Sadly us Brits have got so stuck up lardy da etc you can't make comedy's like they did in the 70s 80s 90s from Little Britain Plus the Young Ones and On The Buses you get one person make a complaint so let's change it, grrrrrr I hate you moaning do gooders lol even my kids in there teens thought comedy's in my days was better even the music. Still life goes on. We must please the lardy dars and watch your P&Qs. I mean look at our Government who needs comedy when you got Boris who is like Blakey from On the Buses lol.

It is so sad now the entire cast has all sadly passed away. There is absolutley no person not only talented enough will fit in to replace any of them. The original cast was so unique it would be crime to try to do it with a new line-up again. They was all made for each other. & when comedy was comedy at it's very best back in the 70's although On the buses started in late 60's ( sorry can't remember as to exact when not that it really matters ) & went on for some years. Only a few other great comedy shows was just as good ALLO, ALLO, ON THE UP, SOME MOTHERS DO AV THEM & a few others the titles escape me for now. But, the Americans tried to bring their so called humour out with such RUBBISH!!! as Cheers, Sienfeld , Frazer & other 💩 I thought what a load of 💩 not in the slightest bit funny. But, maybe i am pejudice so what I still think that ourcBRITISH comedies from around the 70's was the best that could & still is just not with the same insanity as it was then ( due to the 💩 red tape far too much of it😠😡👎). Best way is is either on DVD or if possible re-runs. But, sadly no DVD recorders anymore😠😡👎
