- It's a nostalgic journey back to the 70s for this week's Then & Now Cast Guide as we celebrate the much loved ITV sitcom Man About the House. Pulling in millions of viewers, Man About the House also spawned two equally loved spin-off series - George & Mildred and Robin's Nest - in addition to a big-screen version released in cinemas in 1974.

I have every episode of Man About The House and despite the fact I have watched them all many times, I still go back and watch them again. I can't get over how incredibly beautiful Paul Wilcox (Chrissy) was - if I met a girl like her now I would be head over heels!

After nearly 50 years, each episode of this show raises a belly laugh.. I was just a child when they first went to air in Australia, and thought it was funny, and watched it as much as I could.. ..even at a neighbour's place...
The thing that surprised me more than anything else, Brian Murphy who looked ancient in the 1970's looks a lot better than the younger members of the cast now. And he is 12 years older than Richard, 17 years older than Paula, and 18 years older than Sally.
Yes, looking back, Brian and Yootha played quite old characters but in fact, weren't that old. In their 40's for most of this and George And Mildred.

As Colonel Potter said in M*A*S*H, everything that shows your age tends to fall out: hair, teeth, etc
I think part of that is because English actors seem to become their parts. When watching a British show/movie, you do not see the actor like you would if the show/movie was American. You see whom they are acting as. Like Paula, what ever show she is in, you do not see Paula, you see the person she is acting. When you see her in Man About The House, you see Chrissy or when she is in The Lovers, you see Beryl. Now you look at for example Susan Summers in any show she did, you see Susan Summers first before the person she is acting as.
😃 great comedy show, remember it well. Use to screen over here on Saturday nights. Nowever looking back, so sad the early deaths of Yootha Joyce, Roy Kinnear, and Drug Fisher, all died far too young. But look at Brian Murphy 89, and still going strong 💪..

My Mother knew Richard O' Sullivan quite well - he even pushed me on the toddler swings when I was three years old at Strand On The Green.....harmless family entertainment - no gimmicks or celebrity involved rubbish - happy days !!

Richard O’Sullivan’s American counter part would be the late John Ritter who played Jack Tripper.
Brilliant acting! Even though it was a light hearted comedy, the characters were completely believable especially Richard O"Sullivan and Yootha Joyce.
Just watched “Man about the House:” Then and Now. 📺 It reminded me of how this Situation Comedy 🎭 was ahead of its time! If I find it on ITV3, I still watch it!! Even after nearly 50 years, “Man about the House” is still very funny😂🤣 and it had a terrific theme tune🎵🎶 Thanks 😊 again for the memories.👩

@@stuviewtv Yes. If there was a quiz on catchy TV comedy theme tunes of the 70s, the theme for "Man about the House" would probably be one of the easiest to guess...perhaps only behind "The Benny Hill Show!"

Have every episode, Paula was Beautiful, had a thing for her growing up. Still one of my favourite shows and the good life, which I have every episode, all now been converted onto a hard drive to watch on the TV.
Everytime I hear the intro music to Man and the House it takes me right back to the 70s. It just hits me in the gut and all the memories and emotions come to the fore. If there was a time machine; I would love to go back and visit family members who are no longer alive. In a lot of ways life was better back then. Except for dental pain, medicine and the internet. But people seemed to have more time for each other and were not worked to death like they are today.
You've hit the nail on the head. I feel exactly the same. That intro music to MATH is so cheery, uplifting and trendy. I really miss those times too.

So, So true Davman . . . For all the advances that have been made in some areas, which is great, Sadly, people seem to have less time, and time for each other, and seem to have the weight of the world on their shoulders all the time. I think one reason for this is the constant 24/7 bombardment of BAD News about what has, will or might happen etc.
Good news is No news it seems. Whilst we can all be guilty of looking back through Rose tinted specs, It does seem that there were far less problems and more happiness about before all this PC rubbish and scaremongering etc. People used to be free to live and have their own opinions and could express their creativity without being mocked or ridiculed etc or having to jump through certain hoops. Sorry, I'm going off on one aren't I ? Lol.
The point is, Again, that MATH and many other great shows, are a time capsule of when GB was still great, and by and large a happy place to be

Brian Murphy looks terrific 👌. Loved this series. Sad Yootha Joyce and Roy Kinnear died so young. I'm now older than both of them when they passed. Makes you realise how long ago it was.

I’ve met Paula lots of times at my work when I was on the railway and she is a lady so so nice and still looks great I told her it was a shame she didn’t marry Robin if she did in my opinion robins nest would of been much much better ,a true lady is our Paula ❤️
Brian Murphy also starred in series "L for Lester", he played a driving instructor, as another person commented sad that Richard ended up in a home at quite an early age, Roy Kinnear was excellent, such a shame he died quite young

I am still trying to find the complete series "L for Lester". I punched it in on you tube and it came up and I watched it. Cool show but missing the 1 show.

I saw Paula Wilcox on the London stage as Shirley Valentine. No Greek Island props per the film but one woman on her own performing the whole play. A masterclass!
I remember reading Yootha Joyce let it be known that if any member of the crew hastled the younger members of the cast in any way they would have her to answer to. Lovely lady.

Thanks for bringing us another gem from yesteryear,growing up watching shows like these back then felt special, BBC1,BBC2,ITV, a few channels but we sure did get some good tv,seeing your upload brings back memories of great TV, I saw O'Sullivan in a play back in the 70s think it was Billy Liar,though I'd have to think back as it was a long time ago,though I remember the guy who accompanied the Honey Monster was there with the Honey Monster,he was from the Benny Hill Show. @@stuviewtv Cheers,it was such a pleasure to watch,years back I watched an episode of "Never The Twain" being filmed at Teddington,Donald Sinden and Windsor Davies had us in stitches,natural comedians,Donald had shown us how after doing a few seasons his trousers were cut at the back so he could still get in them for the show. Too young to remember 1st time around. Used to watch the repeats in the 1980's though.very funny 😄. I remember Robin's Nest with that Irish bloke who used to wash the Dishes with only 1 arm Lol

great TV show, remember it well , I was a kid when it was on TV, crazy that the premise of a guy sharing a house with two girls was considered daring, when I lived in London in the 90s I shared a flat with three girls for about 10 years!! It just seemed normal , they became good friends, they were like my family, mixed house or flat sharing became very normalised in London.

I never realized Yootha Joyce was such a powerful dramatic actress until I saw her in a couple of movies early on in her career. Apparently this was a source of dismay for her. Only being seen as a comedienne.
Being typecast was one of the reasons she turned to alcohol
Robin's nest was my favourite
Yootha Joyce played a 'baddie' in an episode of The Saint (I think), and Norman Eshley played the part of a "tough special forces military guy" in The Professionals. I haven't got Man About the House or George & Mildred on DVD yet, but i'm working on it :)
Yootha Joyce appeared in one episode of The Saint, titled "The Russian Prisoner", broadcast on 13th August 1967.
Eshley played the cop who became chicken in sweeny too
She also appeared in the horror flick Fanatic (1965) as servant/accomplice to Tallulah Bankhead's religious-nut mother seeking vengenace for her son's death. She got into (and won) a cat-fight at one point with Stephanie Powers' character.

Crikey - Richard O'Sullivan was in everything in the 1970s! As well as the series you mentioned he was also in Doctor at Large and Doctor in Charge.

I've read that Brian Murphy & Yootha Joyce were close friends, despite their antagonistic screen personas. He was actually with her when she died of alcoholism at a relatively early age. She would have died alone, if not for him. 😥
They played their parts so well they were totally unlike their screen characters. Just seemed a waste passing away at just 53
Paula was great in The Lovers with Richard Beckinsale.
I forgot to mention that the TV channel ‘Talking Pictures’ recently showed a documentary about Orson Welles. There was quite an in-depth interview with Norman Eshley as Welles gave him his screen debut in a film called The Immortal Story. Eshley had only recently left drama school and it was an astonishing stroke of good fortune to be in a film directed by Welles. In the interview he describes what it was like doing his first bed scene with Jeanne Moreau where as he put it, he ‘rose to the occasion!’
I never knew that . . . Norman Eshley was good in a great little film made in Wokingham, when I used to live there, called Blind Terror. We watched some of it being filmed in the town, Paul Nicholas coming out of a Bookies etc. Lots of well known actors in it, the great Michael Elphick, Mia Farrow etc. Also does anyone remember Norman in the Sweeney, getting on Jack and George's nerves ? I hope he is okay, I heard he was in a car accident ? Best wishes. Antony.
@@antonybarrett789 Yes. He was a detective assigned to the Sweeney and on the surface was smooth and good at his job but hiding the fact that he can’t handle the violence. The episode ends with him cowering and sobbing in a phone box after a shootout with some villains.

Great content, simple graphics that work well with the bio's and appreciate the hard work that is behind it. I have most of the series in my collection and love watching them over and over again. It freaks me out sometimes aware that I'm enjoying watching and cheered up by so many that have passed away. Happy days.

At one time Yootha Joyce was married to Glynn Edwards whose most famous role was probably playing Dave, the barman of the Winchester Club, in Minder. Yootha was a very heavy drinker. That was the cause of her early death.
Glynn Edwards also appeared as Chrissy's father in an episode of Man About The House when Robin and Chrissy go down to the country to visit her parents.
This still gets shown on British TV. I watched a bit of it this morning. It's still hilarious. I had such a crush on Paula Wilcox when I was a kid. Quite a bit of tragedy happened to the cast. Paul Wilcox's husband died quite young. Roy Kinnear fell off a horse when making a film. Don't know if he had a heart attack on the horse of after he fell off. Yootha had cancer. And Richard O'Sullivan had a stroke quite young which he has never really recovered from. Good to see Brian Murphy still alive. He is one of the best comedy actors we've ever produced.
I think Richard has dementia now. I always liked him. I remember he played the brother of Cleopatra alongside Liz Taylor.

I believe Yootha Joyce died from liver problems due to her alcoholism which she hid towards the end

@Dude Dudster She would only be about 50 when filming the series. If you read Wikipedia about her she was drinking half a bottle of brandy a day, a real shame really...

Paula was in Australia to do a play in the late 70’s maybe early 80’s. It was cancelled due to her ill health at the time. It might have been, “My Fat Friend”?

I agree Kevin. I enjoyed Doug Fisher in it too and always felt he was somewhat underused. That would have been a good idea, A spin off series. Also, I don't see why they couldn't have had the other characters turn up in episodes of George and Mildred, going to visit them etc, changing things around a bit. They all seemed to work so well together. I hope they did, and got on with each other !

I saw Paula Wilcox in an episode of "Green Green Grass" - y'know - the spin-off from Only Fools and Horses (get a quiz done about that Stu- c'mon, hurry up now). What a very attractive and beautiful lady she is.

Richard O'Sullivan was a very talented, versatile actor, as was seen when he switched from playing the likeable and clownish Robin Tripp to playing the dastardly Dick Turpin. ( a series I would like to see again). Unfortunately, ill health took its toll on him at a relatively early age including having a stroke. I recently saw him in the film The Nun Story (1959) where he has a short clip playing Audrey Hepburn's brother and gets a peck on the cheek from her - lucky man! Should have mentioned his classic role though, in the credits, of Dr Bingham in the Doctor in the House series. Worth mentioning Roy Kinnear, an immensely talented actor, who unfortunately was killed in a riding accident whilst filming in Spain. He was a very funny comedy actor but had tremendous depth and was equally at home playing Shakespeare. As for Sally Thomsett, well she was my schoolboy crush ( as I'm sure she was for many pubescent young men at the time!)
Well recalled about Roy Kinnear. The riding accident was during filming of the sequel to The Three Musketeers. Great actor.

Spent some time with Richard and Sally during the production run as the lady in my life at that time was the Production Assistant for the show.. Great fun.. I really must take a look in the mirror... or, maybe not.

@@stuviewtv Indeed.. It was a fun time. I was living on my boat on the Thames just below the studio, my girlfriend was the PA working with Peter Frazer-Jones. I would sit in on some of the productions.. pub fun was at the Tide End Cottage, occasionally The Anglers, (where we would on occasion have to go searching for Tommy Cooper).. Yootha had an amazing talent for telling funny stories from her life.. sad ending for her. Lots of partying around that time, Sally was involved with the son of the owner of the boatyard, I was the Yacht Broker. The last time I bumped into Sally was just off Oxford St, I was riding my BMW R100RS, I offered to give her a lift but having only one helmet she declined, not wanting to drop me in it.. I wouldn't have cared.. Great to look back on it all.. Would love to bump into the lady in my life at that time, catch up on life... she'd be amazed. I always felt cheated that they brought in Robins brother to marry Chrissie at the end.
It is strange that Norman Eshley also played a married man cheating on Chrissie in an earlier episode. When they made George and Mildred, they could of had Paula Wilcox play his wife.
As it was funny again the Norman Eshley played Mr Fourmile and they didn't noticed he was married to Chrissie previously. Such is TV land.
Norman Ashley was also in an episode of Randal and Hopkirk
Man About the House and George and Mildren were very popular and loved in Spain. I don't know in the rest of Europe. Was it shown in the US? I wouldn't be surprised if it wasn't. At least they made a good remake with John Ritter.
Brian Murphy got his own BBC TV sitcom in 1982.. L For Lester about a happless driving instructor who on the instructions of his bank manager who also as an investor in his driving lesson business asks Lester to avoid making his wife pass her test as he doesn't want his hopeless scatterbrained wife driving his Rover !

The sad part is the man about the house , dutch version had an eerie sad resmblance with the characters of Yootha yoyce and Brain Murphy . Where youtha die way to young , the actress playing the dutch character of mrs roper . also passed away way to soon .
