- On the Buses cast and crew, including Reg Varney, Anna Karen, Stephen Lewis, Andria Lawrence, production supervisor Roy Skeggs, Hammer Films runners Brian Reynolds and Phil Campbell, and author Morris Bright MBE, celebrate the Bob Grant and his timeless Buses character, Jack, the conductor.
These interviews are part of our recent feature length documentary On the Buses at the Movies that celebrates the 50th anniversaries of the classic British comedy film series, On the Buses, Mutiny on the Buses and Holiday On the Buses. The documentary goes behind the scenes, looks at the making of the films and reflects on the their enduring appeal.
Special thanks to Morris Bright MBE for allowing us access to his archive interviews with Anna, Reg, Stephen, Roy and the two Ronnies that were recorded in 2002.

I met Bob grant on holiday in Weymouth many years ago, I asked for an autograph witch he very happily obliged, a very nice man ,shame how he died

They are talking about Bob Grant's lack of roles but I'm sure I saw him in the long running stage comedy Anyone For Dennis playing Dennis Thatcher.

Such a shame he never got more opportunities in other comedy shows as he was a great actor, now sadly missed like so many of the cast.
Yes couldn't understand it, he could have acted any role, so sad. one of the problems was there wasnt much support in those days like there is today. lets hope they are all together now.
We lived next to Bob grant for years and he was a very gentle man,he would do anything for you rip Bob such a loving person

Met Bob in Ontario Canada in 1975. Super funny and super nice.
Terrible how "Jack" went out. He was one of my favourites...He portrayed your average working bloke of that era. You could Lech and whistle...and appreciate a birds beauty...and get away with it cos it was the norm...and natural-law...That's how you got a birds attention and attempted to chat them up. If they liked you they'd talk to you...if not they'd blank you or tell you to fuck off and it was as simple as that....R.I.P. Bob Grant....
@King Royal What aspects of the show were "racist" your opinion?...as this was 1970's Britain, and the generations alive back then were literally "British"...That's the way it was...No one was ate-up about it...no one batted an eyelid...Times were tough...wages were low...But you know what?...People were happier...they got on with it...they were harder physically and mentally. There was no social-awkwardness. People said what they thought without being politically-corrected by some brainwashing/lentil-munching liberals corrupting kids minds into the socially-autistic society we have today....
@@Spike0000 I always said that Britain isn't a racist country. We are multi-cultural in nature. But for a time we did make the obvious jokes and everyone was in the joke and we all laughed. Until a small group of people in the 1980's decided political incorrectness was a crime. They are still trying to tell us what to laugh at.
@@tehf00n I think it oddly enough goes back to the late 60's with Mary Whitehouse...These days the schools drum it into em...It's like another reality now...Back then it was the fact that it WAS taboo and caused offence that made a joke funny...the naughtiness of it....
@@Spike0000 yeah Whitehouse and her committee went way back but picked up traction with the video nasty era around 1980-82. Eventually leading to the BBFC creating the ratings system we used today (although it was different when it first appeared with just U,PG,15,18 and Unrated).
Jokes wise when it came to racism it was almost always founded in the ignorant and stupidity of racists and showing them up for what they are, dumb. Alf Garnett's longwinded and uncomfortable path to self-realisation of his own ignorance, and Archie Bunker reflecting the same path for the US market, was a prime example of how we saw and laughed at the ignorance rather than the intent. And with comedy that is an especially important defining protocol.
@@tehf00n Also, the comedy of today...[with the exception of Peter Kay & Coogan] whom do try to add a bit of old-skool 70's/80's style humour and bring it into the 21st century...but the rest, are just totally, completely unfunny...if anything they're just gay and either over-camp or monotone. I'll tell you what I did find entertaining past 8yrs or so...those "It Was Alright in 70's/80's/90's"...and the fake-shocked reaction of the millennials they had on, showing contempt and horror cos someone in an old TV series would say the word...N***er..[like they haven't heard worse in a modern-day schoolyard??]....
Doris, Reg plus Michael and Stephen Bob also Anna RIP. They gave us all years of laughter on the buses will live for ever.

Anna Karen is recently deceased, a tragic house fire death. I remember seeing Reg Varney in Exeter about 20 years ago, he later lived in nearby Budleigh Salterton. Stephen Lewis was also in Last of the Summer Wine before it finished.

bob grant played his part so well,sad how his life ended but we still have the memories.
Reg is like an older brother to Bob and Stephen now they are reunited in heaven making a remake on the buses with smartphones

I WATCHED , On the Buses FOR YEARS AND IT WAS A GREAT SHOW TO WATCH AN LAUGH AT ALSO.
My dad was both a drive and conductor with Crosville and tells me some of the story lines wasn`t that far from the truth. a great series at the time well acted and of course we have just lost Anna Karen , so " any more fares please" R.I.P them all.
Fascinating! You just don't get these kind of Performer's anyone... brilliant all of them!
Bob Grant was loved. All these years later we come here in celebration of an engaging talent.

Some actors wear their charachter's so well that people cannot see them as anything else , like Fulton Mackay , forever the prison officer , Wilfred Brimble and Harry H Corbett , Alf Garnet , and of course Captain Mainwearing . But Bob Grant's portrayel of a bus conducter just about makes him the top man .
Fulton Mackay; Local Hero, Arthur Lowe; Coronation Street
Brian Murphy and Yootha Joyce were the same as George and Mildred - Yootha said in their last interview said anyone could have played the characters - no chance they were brilliant 💙
@@mikehayes5889 Yootha was in Sparrers can’t sing which Stephen I believed directed and starred of course Dame Barbara Windsor. Joan Littlewood of course gave working class people a platform to perform, firstly in Manchester and then East London. Her innovation led to theatre workshops up and down the country sprouting and so many actors, came from that media.

@@mikehayes5889 I think Arthur Mullard and Victor Spinetti were in it too. Mullard did Romany Jones and then Yus My Dear with Queenie Watts (both created by Messrs Wolfe and Chesney), and Spinetti was in Two in Clover along with Sid James. Would Sparrows Can't Sing have been the first time Yootha Joyce and Brian Murphy worked together on screen?

How odd is it to hear Stephen Lewis' actual voice! I'm used to him playing Blakey or Smiler in Last of the Summer Wine.
It seems every role he played was Blakey. The only difference being that Smiler (what an ironic name) was a down trodden errand worker for Auntie Wainwright.
He was brilliant as Blakey.
It was jack who got me into on the buses, best character, so well played, one of the best comedy shows ever done!
Fab stuff, we need a laugh at the moment...with all that's kicking off

Interesting to hear Stephen Lewis say "I'll 'ave you for this". Lots of people insist his catch-cry was "I 'ate you Butler" but I always heard "I'll 'ave you Butler....I'll 'ave you!"
I always thought Bob Grant would have made a very good Dr Who. He was a good actor. I'm sure he would have jumped at the chance to have been a hero to millions of children.

Most if the story lines were so simple and slapstick,you could tell what was going to happen next ,..but it was such good fun to watch.
To see Stephen Lewis ease into Blakey’s character was great!

So sad what happened to Bob Grant I was only 10 but remember my Dad telling my Mum he had died, and then same when Reg Varney died though I was 15 and oddly enough was my friends 16th birthday day he died, but 4 months before Reg Varney died I had started watching On The Buses myself.
May the cast of on the buses for ever rest in peace i miss them all so very much they will never be forgotten by all great fans of the show i watch it all the time 😂

Bob grant was great and a good laugh. I was surprised how polite he was in an interview on TV. Didn't seem like the same person. But it was cruel that nobody would employ him because of typecast. Del boy managed it with taking on multiple characters and he was brilliant in them all.
Childhood memories.
It's very sad, but acting is a tough art form. I studied drama, got an agent, did a lot of unpaid theater work, etc. Eventually you have to look beyond it and see that if you want a happy life, there are other things out there. Those whose whole lives are their acting career are a very small percentage, I assume. Though I can't help thinking a famous man like him could've used his fame and gotten onto celebrity based reality shows had he lived into the current era. He perhaps underestimated how well remembered and well-loved he really was. So sad.

Reg Varneys houses were beautiful. He must have made a bit of money. Poor Bob Grant I remember his interview with Pamela wotsit back in the 80s, heartbreaking stuff. My favourite bit of On the Buses involved no lines; it was the photograph of Blakey with his twin sister. RIP Bob.

Last night 🌃 there wasn't anything on the television l liked to watch so l put a On The Buses episode from January 1971 it was Arthur and olive 10th wedding Anniversary episode l couldn't stop laughing 🤣 especially when aunt Maud got a dog for Arthur and olive when Olive put it near Arthur he kept sneezing.

Bob Grant and identical Actor Cadrew Robinson i often mistook for the same .The Snake charmer in Carry on up The Khyber is an instance when i looked at the Actors titles and assumed that his name had been unlisted until i discovered the similar featured thespian Cadrew Robinson was his double..

Never would of linked Roy Skeggs & " On the Buses". Worked at Elstree for about a year in the early 80s on a Walt Disney film & i walked past Roy's Mercedes every day, always working in those days for "Hammer house of Horror". Either he lived close or he never went home!
Stephen Lewis starred in Last of the Summer wine and was the same character as he played in on the buses, I honestly thought that was how he was but he sounded very different in real life

The casting for on the buses was spot on you could not improve on it they were the best ... example delboy in fools and horses you cant get better

Funny side at home - Michael Robbins, and funny side in the depot - Stephen Lewis.
Once Robbins left, there was effectively half a show
You have to care about the characters and working class people could relate to these people, because they were us. Law abiding, making ends meet, making fun of mates but never cruel, knowing the difference between right and wrong, respect for older people. Keeping feelings to yourself. A culture now gone.

Absolutely heartbreaking what happened to him, he brought so much joy to people, its a shame mental health wasn't taken seriously back then, maybe he could of got help :(

Hi, on behalf of the 5k plus subscribers I would like to say this, PLEASE PLEASE RESPOND. We have all enjoyed these clips certainly and hopefully most of us with have watched the full documentary, but we would like a permanent record of such a wonderful undertaking to pick up off our shelves and watch whenever we want to. Please as it is nearly a year on can we be told whether there will be a release on physical dvd or not - I have emailed the company direct and received no response

The guy from the fan club has the same last name as the bus company name, thats a happy coincidence for him.

Never forgotten regardless of the sad outcome had the same problem harry H corbett did he played harold steptoe that good people forgot he was more than a one cliche actor and had much more too offer the acting world..but the memories will last a lifetime 🙏🙏🏴🙏🙏

Were his teeth real? He was like Austin Powers, women always wanted to be with him despite how bad his teeth were.
I remember reading that they were his teeth and he was not happy with their appearance. I guess nowadays they would have had the option of cosmetic surgery but back then I don’t think it was an option.

@@JaredGriffiths2000 fortunately for me my teeth never needed any particular attention as I grew up (other than the very odd filling) and every tooth remains intact including my wisdom teeth but I am sure my advancing years will change that. Hope the aligners are a success for you.

My best friend has really perfectly straight teeth and he never had to have braces or aligners so I feel kind of insecure about my teeth when I'm with him but he doesn't really tease me because of my teeth or anything and he told me that he had another friend who wore those aligners and said they work really well. I've joked before that it's ironic because my best friend is LGBT but he naturally has really perfectly straight teeth.

No that’s their bus uniforms as it was a series about a bus depot / drivers etc
The uniforms of both Drivers and Conductors changed through the years right up until Conductors no longer existed and ticket machines were beside/operated by the Driver; they were just black uniforms (Luxton and District Bus Company - which was a made up company but based on real bus company's of the time). Absolutely no connection with the Nazi's at all.
