Nightmare Time | the lords in black being existentially terrifying for 20 minutes straight

- Hey there! I've been trying out some new editing software, and this is what I ended up with. It's compilation of some of my favorite clips and moments from the Nightmare Time series (and other works), revolving around everyone's favorite gang of cute and cuddly eldritch horrors.
Hope you like it!
I own none of these clips. All this footage is the property of Team Starkid. This video is not made for profit, but for entertainment, to celebrate these fantastic creators, and to share their amazing work. Pokey (Otho) is definitely the scariest Lord. In at least one timeline/dimension, he WON. He rules Earth. Every single human is part of his hive mind.
Wiggly is the ruler of the black and white. Just because Pokey won a small victory doesn't mean anything.
@@Bagelboy615 True. But when Wiggly tried to take over our world, he failed. Pokey didn't.
and wiggly could've won, if he nuked later, for freak sake
He's from space he definitely controls more than just Earth
@@angelicabutterfly1794 didn't wiggy teleported a nuke that was for him to Moscow to start world war 3?
I would love to see non-Zoom versions of Nightmare time, honestly. With full costumes and everything, Id pay to see it in a heartbeat.
The Hatchetfield Ape-Man would be like Into The Woods where Joey's wearing a costume with a dong the whole time.
Yes! Its the only thing thats keeping me from watching them
I would miss Nick narrating though! ❤
I feel like to do a fully realized version of the nightmare time episodes, it would take budget and bandwidth that the team doesn’t really have. And also, these were great respites during lockdown, it was great seeing the work that was put into this for our enjoyment!
oh my gosh yes
I saw a comment on one of the nightmare time eps that the lords in black represent the five senses; wiggly is touch, blinky is sight, nibbly is taste, pokey is sound, tinky is smell… and that could imply that webby represents the sixth sense, intuition (she sees the future and feels the many worlds vibrate against her web). I dunno, I love this musical lore so much
The only problem with that one is Tinky as smell as that doesn't really square in any way shape or form with anything we've seen Tinky ever do in nightmare time (everything we've seen or heard is about time, nothing to do with odors). The others fits fairly well.
@@s.m.2523 Tinky is described as 'stinking' but I agree.
@@s.m.2523I think it's somewhat implied that Tinky has a pretty big nose?
@@LilyTheSmol He's got a cartoony goat face, it's more of a snout than a big shnoz and if anything of all his facial feature, his crooked teeth and weird imbecilic dead eyes are more remarkable. And when he appears as human in NPMD, his probocis ain't particuallry notable.
Tinky is suppoosed to look like a goat, and Goats have long protruding noses, so that tracks.
"We just keep running into each other don't we Paul" takes on a whole new haunting meaning after diving deep into the series
Explain!!!
@@whocaresaboutmynamebruh491 Watching MWDLM first time by itself you assume they are saying this just in context of the ‘music zombie hive mind’ bumping into Paul several times in one day. But now after everything the context changes; the lords in black literally do keep running into Paul almost every loop/reset. It’s not just a chance meeting, it’s an eternal destination for Paul and the other Hatchet-field residents. The Lords are mocking Paul in a way he won’t even know about…
YESS! And he doesn’t really understand. He is basically in everything hatchet field related, and every different thing usually has a lord in black behind it. I wonder what the lords say about Paul in the black and white. Just, “did you see Paul out today while terrorizing the hatchet field?”
@@Caroline-mp9oe
"Ooh, yes, he offered me an apple, so I let him go that time, yum, yum!"
Jon's Wiggly voice is terrifying and I'd love to know how he does it.
Well, I figured out the laugh. Just laugh and then (while laughing) breathe in suddenly, sharply, and in through the back/top section of your throat. It takes a few tries but I think I got it in like 5 minutes
@@cirrusB612 Fascinating! Thanks for the science. :)
@@cirrusB612 If you do it wrong do you risk choking?
@@moralityisnotsubjective5 ...okay, you shouldn't have any food in your mouth when attempting this. I've never injured myself trying, but I feel like the most damage in the realm of possibility is giving yourself the hiccups. Because hiccups and this sharp breathing aren't too different. But if you feel like you might choke, then _please_ change up what you're doing. Stay safe :)
@@cirrusB612 It was just a causal question. I wasn't going to try it. And I was speaking more in terms of accidentally having your own saliva go down the wrong tube or something.
I find their names super interesting. I think Wiggly, Nibbly, and Blinky are super self-explanatory (It wiggles, it nibbles, and it blinks). Pokey is probably a shortening of Hokey Pokey, a song and dance where everyone must join in. Tinky probably comes from "Tinkerer," because that's how he's referred to in the Black Book.
I always took Tinky to be short for "Stinky" as well considering hes the lord in black associated with Smell and is always described as smelling foul.
@@emmagoebel650 could be, but at 1:59 the black book shows Tinky's page and it says "The Tinkerer" on it, so that seems more likely
tinky also reminds me of tinker toys, and we all know how tinky likes his toys
Pokey also "pokes" into people's minds and then takes over
Also with tinky's full name, T'noy Keraxis, the first part of his name is only a letter and apostrophe off from just being toy
Out of all the Lords I think Tinky is the scariest. He may not be a world dominator like Pokey or Wiggly but he's sadistic, giving eternal torment to one person just for fun, and he's inescapable, if you're a normal person just hearing the Killer Track once means you're going to die no matter what.
was the Killer Track due to Tinky? i know Ms. Holloway used Tinky's power to get around the curse, but i would have assumed the Killer Track was drawing from Pokey, given the sound/music relation. genuine question tbc
@@byuonesYes, you're right. Pokey is the sound guy, and Tinky deals with time.
Perhaps it’s both of them working together?
@@hannahbaldwin7248 I dont think Pokey is necessarily the sound guy, i think he was using musicals because the meteor landed in a theatre?
@@forcebender9081 across a few other episodes like Yellow Jacket, Pokey is def implied to use sound and the mind to abduct or control others
To assimilate the kids in battle, he emits a sound that begins to match and eventually overpower their voice, even shining something into their ear as a way into their mind
he has some of the strongest connections to the senses
the next would be Blinky and Nibbly (the eyes and power of knowledge/awareness or the mouth and hunger, passion, drive respectively)
This is definitely gonna need an update after npmd. They’re so freaky in that scene
Yeah specifically from the digital ticket where you can see all five at once, their movements are super eerie
YESSSSSS OH MY GOSH I LOVED THAT PART
Honestly I think that the entire musical was just so that we could have that scene with the LIB 😂
The costume design for them is _peak_ though, especially Pokey and Nibbly!
Y’all sleep on how terrifying blinky is, he’s always watching, always knows what you are doing and thinking, always watching.
eldritch santa lmfao
you read my mind @@m00npie-333 🤣🤣
Not just that, Blinky toys with his victims, getting delight from seeing their suffering, suffering he causes. He actively torments people, tears them apart from the inside, and the whole time he is just watching
Tinky definitely scares me the most. Jeff just makes any character he plays somewhat off putting lol
Agreed he plays such great dark characters

I can’t believe that Pokey was the one responsible for the conflict of The Guy Who Didn’t Like Musicals. I thought it was because of aliens! But that’s what Pokey wanted us to believe. That little sneak…
Wiggly having the most normal personality is honestly creepiest.
the hatchetfield lore is so interesting and so cool. It’s probably one of my fav starkid things ever
I love that they recontextualized their own name into the lore, being that the 'Cult of the Starry Children' started it all. What else is an eldritch being from beyond the stars than a 'Starkid'?
“A Family tree of eldritch horrors”. This line makes me realize a few things when you think of the implications
1: there’s a genuine hierarchy within the Black and White, and there’s a chance that the current Lords in Black were born into their titles
2: there could be MORE beings like this over there that can take the titles if the current lords were to ever actually be defeated or die
3: THESE GUYS MIGHT NOT HAVE BEEN THE FIRST LORDS IN BLACK, AND THERE’S AN EQUAL CHANCE THAT THEY MAY NOT BE THE LAST
9:00 Jon: "passion"
Also Jon: "mY bArBeQue"
I have a theory that the lords in black just keep making alternate universes just to play, to have power
Or, hear me out-
Webby keeps making them to try to save the humans.
I've come here after watching the youtube premiere of Nerdy Prudes and making connections that I wasn't able to before.
I headcanon that the scene where Lex encounters the Pokey dolls is what happened in the TGWDLM timeline. Would make sense, to me at least.
I also love how the dolls are named. Sing-Along Pokey. That's not a cute little tagline. It's a COMMAND.
Hungriest: Nibbly
Cleverest: Wiggly
Trickiest: Tinky
Most Sadistic: Blinky
The queer, theatre kid sibling: pokey
The most uncompromising: Pokey
I would've thought Tinky was the most sadistic. He's the one who apparently keeps victims in a torture box.
@@adamdavis1648 see, Tinky does not see what he does as torture, he is just playing with what to him are simple toys, he is a playful trickster god after all. Blinky on the other hand is primarily voyeuristic, he enjoys seining people tear each other to pieces for his entertainment.
Most Successful: Pokey
Honestly wiggly, pokey, and tinky are the most messed up and scariest entities. I hope some of them come back in npmd or I would love to see them make a musical about the lords of black as the final hatchet field musical

I found out about Nightmare Time after seeing NPMD and this comment is wonderful in hindsight
Coming back to this after NPMD hits different
I actually have a theory (that I don't believe in at ALL, completely untrue but fun to think about) is that Black Friday is a direct sequel to TGWDLM, happening maybe a few months apart (which is why everyone's still singing) and the whole thing is just Pokey making stories for his own amusement while Wiggly is trying to wrench control from him via the toys. A brothers' quarrel because Wiggly's a sore loser. Of course, that would make all of the characters' struggles completely meaningless, which is why it's most definitely not true.
Pokey: Wiggly, let go! Mum said it's my turn to play with Hatchetfield!
Wiggly: Now now, Pokey, you greedy boy. You spent your turn. This one's mine. I want to play with the bomb-y wom!
Pokey: That's not fair! I'm telling! MUUUM!!
Mrs Lord In Black: Wiggly! Are you sharing with your brother?!
Wiggly: Y-yes, Mumsy wum. *Glares at Pokey*
Pokey: Let's play musical chairs! When the music stops, you can come out to play!
I got that too! I imagine Starkid will be doing a show for each Black Lord and maybe a final one?
@@iantophernicus6042 I just spent too long laughing at this 😂
@@iantophernicus6042 I am properly DEAD XD XD XD XD
@@iantophernicus6042 the irony of wiggly calling someone greedy
I'm calling it right now, Wiggly is the eldest brother and Pokey is the baby. In order I suspect it goes: Wiggly, Blinky, Tinky, Nibbly, and Pokey. Wiggly and Blinky both radiate big bro engery, Tinky is DEFINITELY the middle child, and Nibbly and Pokey both seem the youngest. That's just my little theory on the brother hierarchy. I believe I remember hearing that Webby was younger than all of them, but I don't remember where. Feel free to correct me if I'm completely wrong lol
I could also see it as Pokey being the second oldest who wants to prove he's just as cool as big brother Wiggly and that's why he seems to be the only other one interested in causing an apocalypse
Same, except I'd reverse nibbly and pokey with how nibbly talks and their hyperfixation on eating
I’d assume their age is in the order they’re often listed:
Pokey, Blinky, Tinky, Nibbly, Wiggly.
It may seem odd for wiggly to be the youngest as he’s the leader/most clever, but I know in Greek mythology Zeus was the youngest of the 6 first olympians, and still king of gods so maybe that’s connected somehow 🤷♀️
Wow they really thought this series through. Props to everyone who worked on these stories
You can tell from their talkback streams that Nick and Matt Lang have so many more stories-some that they've even written-for this universe. So many of the characters have their own fleshed out stories that we might not even get to hear. It's clear they care deeply for this world they've created.
"he's a bastard". That's one way of putting it
Of the time and space variety
I think what starkid gets right about horror/comedy is that the horror is an important part of it too. there are tons of horror/comedy movies that are really just comedic parodies of horror tropes, but this series takes both the jokes and the scares seriously in equal parts and it works so well
Just realized that Pokey says he keeps running into Paul and Wiggly says he keeps running into Hannah. Tinky doesn’t say it but Ted is the human he keeps running into, especially since he mentions that he’s been collecting Spankoffsci’s in his toy box when he sees Peter in NPMD. I don’t think Nibblys human is Linda since we don’t see him interacted with other versions of Linda. I’m not sure about Blinky or Webby. Maybe Webby and Wiggly share Hannah?
This is really similar to a theory I had that each lord in black had a particular human that they tortured:
Pokey = Paul
Blinky = Bill
Tinky = Ted
Nibbly = possibly Linda
Not sure about wiggly, but yeah maybe Hannah now you mention it.
I actually wondered if some of them were almost a human equivalent of the lib if that makes sense. like they have similar traits to the human they torture.
Paul is very uncompromising (like pokey) if he doesn’t want to see Mama Mia with his friend, he’s not going to. Nothings going to change his mind. Ted isn’t exactly sadistic like Tinky, he states the thing he loves “screwing around with another man’s wife” not just screwing around with a woman, but specifically another man’s wife. This would imply that he enjoys messing with peoples marriages and is probably entertained by this. As for Linda and nibbly, honey queen basically explains that she’s the hungriest (like nibbly) which is why nibbly chose her as his victim. The only one that doesn’t fit this pattern is bill and Blinky and maybe Hannah, if she’s wiggly’s victim.
I just rewatched WatcherWorld an I think Blinkys human could possibly be Alice. While the episode focuses both on Bill and Alice there is more focus on her. We learn things about her character that we didn't know before, she’s afraid of heights, she’s an aspiring playwright, and most importantly, she’s trapped herself in an unhealthy relationship because her parents divorce has made her afraid of being like her dad and leaving a relationship. That last fact about her definitely makes her “someone worth watching”, and that’s the main reason I ruled out Bill. Bill, bless his heart, is incredibly boring. The most exciting part of his office job was refreshing a webpage to buy tickets to see Mama Mia with his daughter, Alice is the only thing that keeps his life a little bit interesting. Just like Linda I’m a little unsure about this one because we’ve never seen Blinky interact with another version of Alice.
@MabelTemikiTying into your theory, Alice was obsessing over watching Deb throughout the whole episode just like how Blinky is obsessed with watching over the guests of WatcherWorld.
Imagine getting a full performance of Watcher World, Time Bastard and Honey Queen so we can actually see the full stories of the Lords In Black play out on stage
I love how much Joey Richter feels like a Stephen King character in that monologue. The King references in Black Friday rule so hard.
coming back here after NPMD and its. helpful
The theme moving from a vamp to the beginning of The Guy Who Didn't Musicals was genuinely terrifying
I really really wish that we got to have the lords’ true forms as costumes 🫠
Nah man, that would melt our minds!
@@geniehossain3738I want big silhouettes of the other four, like the one of Wiggly in Black Friday
Anyone else watching this after attending NPMD?
I can’t wait for it to come on UA-cam
I saw it yesterday, it was amazing
So when Webby is discussing the Lords in Black, she lists characteristics that I think correspond to one each?
Pokey = most uncompromising (duh)
Tinky = most sadistic (he’s a bastard)
Nibbly = hungriest
And then I think Wiggly is the most clever? Which would make Blinky the trickiest, though I could be wrong on those two.
Wait, I got it. Blinky is sadistic (likes watching people suffer), Wiggly is clever, and Tinky is tricky (manipulative to trick Ted into the bastard’s box)
@@sylviemoroseI don't know; we aren't told what happens to most people killed by the other Lords In Black, whereas Tinky's victims are implied to suffer for eternity in the Bastard's Box. He seems like the most sadistic to me.
Blinky must be the sadist, he wants to watch them suffer
Wiggly must must be the trickiest, he tricks the Russians in making a second portal, then the Americans to send the bomb
Which would make Tinky the most clever
Though of course tricky and clever are pretty much interchangeable
Also, Webby is a Lord in Black but does not include herself in this description, unless we ge a later outcome where she had a plan all along
@@GregorifElfeNoirWebby is said to be a Queen in White, whereas her brothers are the Lords in Black. She’s not technically classified as one of them.
I’d honestly love to know more about their “family” and if Webby was once one of the Lords in Black, but became good, or if maybe they were all once good like Webby, but became corrupted somehow? Or maybe they were all created as is, to be a cosmic balance for each other. It’s hard to say, but I’m deeply fascinated in the lore. 😊
@@adamdavis1648it is about intent. Like, if we get nitpicky, eating people alive, seizing control of someone’s body and decaying people’s minds until they become fanatic servants is all pretty sadistic too, but we’re talking about the MOST sadistic. Blinky is the embodiment of violence and voyeurism, he likes to watch people suffer and make each other suffer.
i think in portrayal I was most scared by Nibbly but in concept Tinky or Blinky are the scariest in whole (however I haven't gotten to Pokey's episode yet so we'll see if my opinion yet). I will say Blinky's episode has been my favorite so far.
They’re not one-to-one with the Lovecraft creatures, but to my mind, it’s probably something like
Wiggly - Cthulhu
Tinkly - Nartelthotep
Blinky - Azathoth
Nibbly - Shub N (not spelling that one out)
Pokey - Yog-Sothoth
The only one I'd hesitate on here would be Azathoth, since in the Cthulhu mythos Azathoth is pretty much the one creating and keeping the universe existing by sheer virtue of being asleep and dreaming the whole thing up, so on a very different level, but if we're going solely based on Lovecraft's work I'd agree that'd be the entity closest. If we include the greater Cthulhu mythos, on the other hand, I'd say Hastur fits Blinky better what with the observing and wanting to have a show put on thing.
(Oh, and on the issue with Shub that I will also not spell or say, I've always liked using Shub Nir'ath as a replacement)
From what I know of tinky, he focuses on singular individuals, yeah? I’d say that pokey (hive mind?) is more akin to nyarlathotep, since he’s got a much broader sphere of influence and can hide his control very easily (as evidenced by Paul at the end of GWDLM). But I could certainly be wrong (though I did have to read.. . Pretty much everything about nyarlathotep for my bachelor’s thesis)
I’d also say that given his title of “bastard of time and space” that Tinky suits Yog-Sothoth best, ironically enough, though Pokey *could* be a candidate for an azathoth figure at the end of it all, if he’s the only thing left (I.e really real), then him “waking up”/deciding to stop the musical could be equivalent to what happens if Azathoth should properly wake up. Then again, as Tinky seems to have a looooot of people suffering under him, he could potentially be a stand-in for the King in Yellow, with the Bastard Box serving as Carcossa, the realm over which he rules
Did the tentacles give it away?
YS actually doesn’t seem like a bad guy
jumpscare by seeing “yog-sothoth” outside of the mechanisms fandom. which.. coincidentally is also a song-form story!
I wonder why they want to take over worlds in different dimensions? These seem like very powerful beings compared to humans, so why waste time with us? With Tinky and Blinky, it seems to be entertainment, and with Nibbly it's gluttony. (For Pokey, I can't say yet until I've watched Yellow Jacket). But Wiggly seems to be "king" -- why would he bother? Imagine being this vast, powerful being, thrilled with tearing open the guts of one human in one dimension. My theory is that the more human trauma they cause, the more powerful they become. Their main domain is the Black and White which is described as a "swirling sea of psychic energy," and it's in some form connected to all the Earthly realms. If, hypothetically, trauma and chaos increase psychic energy, the Lords in Black become more powerful. That's why, even if Wiggly didn't achieve world domination, he'd be down with starting WWIII. Or why at the end of PNMD, the Lords of Black ask for such low-collateral sacrifice (in comparison to the other atrocities they've committed in other realms), because the sacrifice causes the highest degree of trauma to the person who sacrifices. To what end do they want to be powerful though? I need to rewatch some Nightmare Time episodes, especially Yellow Jacket. What do y'all think?
Fun, probably. Hell knows how many people build horrific death traps in videogames, it's kinda the same. Infinite power, and no real consequences; Why NOT just turn the world into a musical zombie land or have rabid plushie cultists.
@@josh___something Hahahahaha true
But hey, that's just a theory
A MuSiCaL ThEoRy!
With NPMD, I like to think what they really wanted out of it was a capable pawn, with Grace going completely unhinged at the end. Especially since, when Wiggly says one of them has to give up what they cherish most, he looked directly at Grace. They were just toying with Steph and Peter, as a little freebie, which feels in-line with the human suffering-bit you're proposing, they relish and draw power from it AND gain a very useful pawn whose gonna be causing a lot of destruction and pain, while being under their command? Perfect.
As for Pokey, they actually address his motives a bit in Yellow Jacket, so you can look forward to that (assuming you haven't watched it since you commented this)
I like this theory. They *eating the dread* of what they cause as a way to gain power is so cool.

Nope, I think you're good to go. There is Nerdy Prudes Must Die, the third installment of the Hatchetfield trilogy, but that was released after Nightmare Time. And if you're concerned about chronology or continuity I wouldnt worry too much, since everything in the Hatchetfield Universe kind of stands on its own.
Personally, I like to think of it as each story taking place in a different timeline. So they can do pretty much whatever they want with the characters and stories in each installment, and we can still see them pop up again in the next ones.

If I had a nickel for every time some eldritch entity represented or had strong proof towards the idea of representing the senses, I'd have 2 nickels. And I made one of these instances lol. Gazeus (Smell). Negu/"Thousand Eyes" (Sight). Ria Sun (Reason). Jimmothy Handson (Touch). Banshee, Wraith, and Wrath (Different forms of the being that represent Sound). [REDACTED] (Even its fellow elder horrors refuse to name it. It is Taste, tho.) Inteuri (Intuition. This is the true being and made from the other 5 combining into 1.)
I didn't even know of this series at the time, btw lol.
Am I the only one who thinks Wiggly's design was based on Cthullu? I'm not the only one, right?
I want the stuffies
Why does he sound like goofy 💀 4:11
Ok so I didn't watch the nightmare time videos because whilst I know the stories are good I just can't do the zoom shows, I'm sorry, but just now seeing the dolls nick has made for the ones other than wiggly, please don't say they were also available to buy because I actually bought a wiggly doll after I saw Black Friday and I'd die if I could've owned the rest
They weren't, I've been dying for the rest of them and wiggly to come back as I sadly missed his release
It's honestly meant to be almost a podcast since they're just laying down the scripts and reading them fully. While the puppets are amazing, it's honestly better to just listen to them and only watch the songs!
So we gonna need an update soon?
Was there a lord in black in-charge of the events of TGWDLM?
Yes, it was pokey :)
@@wizardgod4325 is that confirmed or just theories cause I get it but I don’t feel it, I see the evidence but I don’t feel like that’s correct
@@TheWereW01f16 I don't think it's explicitly confirmed but it's heavily hinted at with pokey being designed with the blue goop dripping out and the events that take place with otho and the meteor in yellow jacket, Plus now with the npmd release and him making a reference to tgwdlm in the summoning. I feel like it's safe to say that he is
@@wizardgod4325 I feel like I like Otho more than I do pokey, all honesty I think the goat one is my favorite, tinky? And I much prefer Jeff Blims performance and do wish he played him in NPMD but the guy who play Tom did a good job
@@TheWereW01f16 do you mean Tom from Black Friday. I don’t think curt plays Tom, he was in the show tho.
10:16 and 10:33 okay but why did he have to make sense like that
The entities are just from Magnus archives
OMG MAGNUS ARCHIVES FAN IN THE WILD?????? MY KIND!!!! ❤❤❤
@@Uninteresting88 :O a rarity in this world to be sure, but a welcome one
I'VE BEEN SAYING THISSSS
Nibbly is a fun take on the Flesh imo, I don't even have to say with Blinky, both him and Tinky seem very Spiral connected, End stuff is debatable, Web is also extremely there, Pokey and Wiggly seem the least similar but I'm a new fan. *edit, Pokey is also superficially Stranger in the way Nikola is, and now I'm imagining a crossover fanart with specifically Paul and Tim.
Not to say anyone ripped off or even inspired each other, sometimes good ideas just happen in two people's heads and one of them publishes their ideas first!
Hatchetfield is my MCU atp I swear
Nibbly my favorite
1:50 Who do we think that is?
Oooh, my guess would be either to show how you summon the dark lords (like we see in The Summoning), or perhaps a sacrifice?
Because of the hair, and how quickly Miss Holloway turns the page, I'm curious if this depicts her summoning the lords to make the bargain of giving her immortal life.
what episode of "nightmare time" are the lords in black in?
They all play roles in different episodes, roughly as follows:
Blinky - Watcher World
Pokey - Yellow Jacket
Nibbly - Honey Queen
Tinky - Time Bastard
And then Wiggly has Black Friday
@@simmy0019 Okay, Thank you so much!!!! 😊
