    One of fusion's most virtuosic guitar soloists, John McLaughlin placed his blazing speed in the service of a searching spiritual passion that has kept his music evolving and open to new influences. Whether shredding on electric or simmering quietly on acoustic, McLaughlin's intensity and under appreciated versatility have nearly always kept his playing vital, and his best moments -- whether as a solo artist or band member -- represent some of fusion's greatest recordings.
    American guitarist Jimmy Herring is a musician's musician. The North Carolina native has been playing guitar for close to 40 years and exhibits signs that he's just getting started. A staple in the Jazz Fusion and Jam Band scene, Herring studied guitar at Berklee College of Music and the Guitar Institute of Technology. His playing style melds the influences of Jimi Hendrix's raw emotion, the twang of Steve Morse, and the flowing phrases of jazz legends Charlie Parker and John Coltrane.

    Gary Husband is a total badass musician. I saw him play drums with Alan Holdsworth. To be a top level jazz player on both piano/keyboards and drums is just phenomenal. More people should know about him, just like more people should know about Jimmy.

    I was so blessed to have seen Mahavishnu Orchestra back in their prime and John McLaughlin blew my mind. His musical genius, passion and intensity is unmatched. And the compositions he wrote were spiritual and beautiful. I love Jimmy Herring for making this happen and also love his incredible tone and taste as a player. But for all you idiots making comparisons, music is not a competition. John is still a master and he created a genre of music that changed everything guitar players thought of even trying before him.

      TY Paul. Well said sir !! I first saw The Mahavishnu Orchestra back in 76' at the Woolsey Hall on the Yale New Haven campus here in my home-state of Connecticut and they "blew my mind" also.
      I had heard "Jazz" guitarists before .. but NEVER like that !! McLaughlin's idea, to create a "fusion" of Jazz, Rock and Contemporary styles of playing DID, no doubt, change the course of music in ALL of the genres, and I'm sure that he has inspired many guitarists to broaden their horizons and compose music that follows in his style of playing. ~~ TY Mr. Mahavishnu J.M. ~~```

      Fender Bassman.
      Really CLEAN sustained lead tone.
      So many great players don't get that
      tone RIGHT.
      All of them use too much distortion.
      Duane Allman, Dickey Betts and Jerry Garcia were the epitome of this tone.
      Also see the original
      Wishbone Ash band and albums.
      'Lay Whiskey' the first track on the first

    Mahavishnu opened for Frank Zappa in the early 70's. He was astounded as he watched them play. It change his whole outlook on the combination of complexity and power, It completely changed his music.

    • @Mooseman327
      @Mooseman327 2 роки тому +7

      Yup. Ruth Underwood tells the story of Zappa intently watching Mahavishnu open for him from the wings and telling herself "changes are coming." Zappa upgraded everything after that, including most of his musicians, going for more accomplished jazz players and the like. Credit to Zappa because most rock bands of the time refused to even have Mahavishnu open for them because they blew the headliners away on the stage. For example, I saw Mahavishnu open for the Jerry Garcia Band at Symphony Hall in Boston in early 1972 and more than half the audience walked out on Garcia, including myself, because the quality of musicianship, energy and focus went way down after Mahavishnu. Compared to Mahavishnu, the Jerry Garcia Band sounded like a bunch of stoned hippies noodling away in their basement practice room.

    • @Mooseman327
      @Mooseman327 2 роки тому +1

      The best "rock" groups of this period were actually jazz-oriented with some of the best jazz players. Miles with his Bitches Brew and Live/Evil bands, Weather Report, Return to Forever, and, of course, Mahavishnu. These groups upgraded the entire rock scene because rock fans were being given a taste of what was possible with the music and they liked what they heard.

    • @josephblow5946
      @josephblow5946 Рік тому +1

      @@Mooseman327 Bud Cockrell, the original bass player from Pablo Cruise, told me they opened for Mahavisnu, and that being the opening act was a better option than being the headliner and getting blown away like Jerry Garcia did.
      On the other hand, if the headliner is a mega superstar act like Pink Floyd, the outcome is reversed, due to the overwhelming Pink Floyd fanbase, that are specifically there to hear commercially popular rock/pop. That kind of crowd can care less about technical virtuosity. Long story short, I heard Mahavisnu got booed opening for Pink Floyd. Had Jerry Garcia been with the Grateful Dead, the outcome may have been different.

    This reminds me of an interview with Paul McCartney in the mid-70s when he was in Wings and reluctant to perform the songs he'd written in the 60s, before realising that they weren't just Beatles tracks but great songs worth playing again, regardless of any historical baggage.
    There's much to enjoy here . A Lotus On Irish Streams is delicately lovely and has a great new mid-section; Earth Ship, meanwhile, is magnificent - easily equal to the live versions I've heard from the '75 'Emerald Beyond' tour - there's a lovely moment where John steps upstage and out of the limelight to let Jimmy play a beautiful solo. I also love the bit in Eternity's Breath at 2:47:43 where a grinning John looks forty years younger.
    This is what UA-cam is for. Thank you to the poster.

    I was at the Town Hall show the night before the Cap. Jimmy Herring and the Invisible Whip kicked ass. McLaughlin was his usual transcendent self with a perfect band backing him as always. This was around my 26th time seeing McLaughlin and imho he's the GOAT. Sad that I may never see him again but what a way to say farewell. He's only played a Mahavishnu tune very few times in the last 31 years that I've seen him so gettin to see, hear and feel all the Mahavishnu tunes that completely changed my musical outlook was a dream come true. Got to actually see him do Mahavishnu twice this year cause I also caught him at the Blue note with Chick Corea where they did Return to Forever and Mahavishnu music. That was amazing. But the night at Town hall will go down as my fave concert out of all the shows this past year. I couldn't get onto the relix webcast the other night but so glad it'll always be here to revisit. Thank you Relix.

      Mike Lenowsky My brother and I saw this show two nights earlier in Albany, at The Egg. We drove 2.5 hours and stayed overnight at a hotel. 100 percent worth it. I just learned of McLaughlin in late summer of 2016. I couldn't believe there was this monster player I'd never heard of. He singlehandedly changed my mind about fusion. Perhaps it's because he's a jazz player who actually likes crunching power chords. Anyway, I'm beyond grateful to the universe that it brought MO into my sphere of consciousness just in time for my brother and me to catch the man's retirement performance. Incredible.

      +bws1971 Wow man. I'm glad you got to see him...especially playing most of those Mahavishnu tunes for the first time since the 70s. This was somewhere around my 25th-27th time seeing him and it was surreal seeing all the music I loved growing up finally. Since you liked John so much I highly recommend checking out alot of Jeff Beck, Allan Holdsworth, and Frank Zappa..I can name more but I think you'd really dig these cats alot. McLaughlin was always my fave with Beck just a small notch below him. I'm praying John comes back at some point cause it's sad to think I may never see him again. Get the album's Inner Mounting Flame and Birds of Fire by McLaughlin too..You'll likely have them on repeat for months.

It was the best live music I had ever heard. I am sad that he is not touring in the USA again, but he is going out of here on a high note. I caught their December 9 show in LA with my daughter. The Mahavishnu material was even better than ever. His playing has matured and is clearer than before, and the other musicians did wonderful work, all of them. Congratulations and thank you, John. Hi Tom. I am looking for any artifact that may be available for that show for my comprehensive Mahavishnu Orchestra gig list at www.walterkolosky.com Did you save a ticket stub? Know anyone who did? Know where I can find an ad or poster for that show? Contact me via my website if so. Thanks.

    Thanks for the upload. Great concert. John was in top form here. As for his tone, people have complained about that since his first Mahavishnu tour (when I first saw him live). John is not trying to sound like George Benson & as for a rock sound, he doesn't usually play Fenders, the common standard today. Early on John preferred Gibsons with their dirty sound (think 60s Cream). He hasn't changed. He keeps going for that gritty tone.

    this cat has provided 48 years of ecstatic musical moments - add together the milliseconds - the incredible drummers, cobham, walden, smith, Gurtu, barot - his amazing house sound mix- and right through the heart of Ike's Complex homeland - McLaughlin is a hippie who opposed everything militaristic and people got it - even in the snow in Sioux Falls double-billed with Aerosmith

    I love how full circle music (and the musicians involved) can be with a listening experience afforded on youtube! I just revisited some amazing Shawn Lane live videos with Jeff Sipe on drums with McLaughlin collaborator Jonas Hellborg, and here is Sipe in Herring's band culminating in the epic jams evidenced by this concert; so awesome. Sorry about how incoherent that all was, but finding and listening to performances like this really gets me through hard times, so it's hard to accurately convey the joy and relief via simple worded text.
