@•- my world view had nothing to do with the fact that they were arguing totally mutually exclusive points. in order for one of them to be right, the other had to be wrong. the subject of the disagreement would be whether or not jesus' next return would be pre tribulations or post tribulations.

@@dimicdragan5922 so technically, the interpretation of the Bible is also subjective. You know it's funny how we Christians think. We start with this premise of what we have been cultured to see God as, then whatever inconsistencies we encounter we find justifications for that.
I'm very sure you would think differently if your earthly father did half of what he has done so far. You know why, because you have been cultured to wallow in the ever sinful nature of man, and would run to the explanation that man is inherently sinful. I bet you will not defend him as much, and will probably cringe if I try to justify child labor or even cannibalism for ritual purposes practiced earlier in so parts of the world.
Just like you, to me I don't think there's a difference between perpetually subjecting a lineage to slavery just because there founding father saw his father naked, and discriminating against African Americans whom in some parts of Africa were traded by their own people for a freaking mirror. So please try to just be objective in the face of right and wrong, rid yourself of biblical bias.

Interesting about the story of Abraham is that it has a parallel in Greek mythology: the story of King Athamas of Boeotia and his son Phrixus. In that myth, Athamas was married to Nephele, but left her for Ino. Ino resented her stepchildren, Phrixus and Helle, and wanted to dispose of them. She caused a famine, and the solution was for Athamas to sacrifice his son Phrixus, but the goddess Hera intervened and sent a golden ram to carry off Phrixus as well as Helle. Here, Athamas resembles Abraham, Phrixus resembles Isaac, Ino resembles Sarah, and to a lesser extent, Nephele may resemble Hagar and Helle may resemble Ishmael (even though Helle is a female and Ishmael is a male). Another story that comes to my mind that is somewhat similar is the German fairytale of Hansel and Gretel, two children who are abandoned by their father at the insistence of their nasty stepmother and "sacrificed", if you will, to an old witch who tries to eat them, but they survive and kill the witch, kind of similar to how Phrixus and Isaac both survived being sacrificed.

When I got _really_ bored one day and decided to give the Bible a try (coming from non-religious parents while living in a house we got from my grandparents who had recently moved), I never made it past Genesis 3 after the "one of us" line confused me. Years later, I learned about henotheism and monolatrism and came to realize how all these religions came to be, ultimately starting with our hyper active agency detection mechanism due to evolution. Even if it is just going to be Genesis, this series is great!

The episode between Ishmael and Isaac has changed with different Bible versions. In the Wycliff Bible(which pre-dates the King James), it states that Ishmael was merely playing with Isaac. And that it changed to Ishmael mocking Isaac is quite significant. Ishmael is considered the Ancestor to all Arabs. And eventually many of those Arabs that became Muslim. So the writing in Genesis is altered to say that Ishmael mocked Isaac. Presenting Ishmael as the "bad guy". This is pointed to by many as the beginning of hostilities between Arabs and Jews.

The KJV version, is the official and authorized Bible. The other versions, are not contextually agreeable with the KJV. The KJV records, Ishmael was mocking at Issac. Ishmael believed, that by being the first born son of Abraham, he deserved Abraham's first blessing. But, the promise of a son, was given to Sarah and not Hagar.

      From wiki:
According to the Acts of the Apostles, chapter 15, the Jewish Christian leaders of the early Church at the Council of Jerusalem rejected circumcision as a requirement for Gentile converts, possibly the first act of differentiation of Early Christianity from its Jewish roots(see also list of events in early Christianity). The rite of circumcision was especially execrable in Classical civilization because it was the custom to spend an hour a day or so exercising nude in the gymnasium and in Roman baths, therefore Jewish men did not want to be seen in public deprived of their foreskins. Hellenistic and Roman culture both found circumcision to be cruel and repulsive.

I'm still mulling this over. Okay. God knew that he was eventually going to knock up, or cause to be knocked up, that lovely 90-year-old ingenue, Sarah. So what was the point of conceiving Ishmael and putting Hagar through all that? Did I miss something?

Avi lipkin said the bible is a very puritan written book, but according the Hebrew text, Ismael tried sexually abusing little Isaac. This was reason enough for Sarah to demand Abraham disinherent the Egyptian woman and his son.

I don't buy it, Abraham and his people were like the Kardishians of their time, there must have been some stories left from the Egyptians telling us about the antics of these lunatics doing weird stuff on Abimalek's turf. Abraham was like the Kanye West of his time.

Let's do a first grade maths here..
Abraham was 86 when he got Ishmael and 100 when Isaac was born. So, Ismael was 14 years older than his half brother Isaac..😅
Then Isaac weaned at the age of 2 making Ishmael 16 when he mocked his baby brother.
Abraham sent his 16 yrs old son and his younger wife Hagar away and she had to find water for him to drink???
Such a lazy young man..😠 At his age I cooked for my mom when she was sick, ran some errands while attending high school as a senior and already smoking cigarettes and got my girlfriend pregnant again...😨👈😆😅😄😃🐴🙊

Hey could you use the King James Version? I just stumbled across this video so I don't know how far you are into the bible videos, (I don't know if you're skipping around), but if it's not too late then use the King James Version of the bible and I'll subscribe too!

I always saw the bible as a collection of amusing story's. But now you make me aware of how badly written they are. A modern publisher would never consider to publish them, not without some heavy editing.

Well, these stories are not all equally bad/good. Some of them are written well, some are good concepts that just lack something important and some are indeed very poor. Plus there are a lot of ok narratives pushed into a wrong context with wrong characters and thus having no sence.

We often hear of a gang of thieves plotting to rob and murder a man, and laying a plan to entice him out that they may execute their design, and we always feel shocked at the wickedness of such wretches; but what must we think of a book that describes the Almighty acting in the same manner, and laying plans in heaven to entrap and ruin mankind? Our ideas of His justice and goodness forbid us to believe such stories, and therefore we say that a lying spirit has been in the mouth of the writers of the books of the Bible.

That would have made sense if, earlier in the book of Genesis, it explains why man shall no longer live beyond a 100 years. Aknowledging a 100 years is a pretty long lifespan.
