  • This was not as straightforward as I wanted it to be. I hit a few bumps along the way. Here is a link to the Volvo Penta Duoprop removal tool if you need one:

Like your vids. Feel your pain. As i said in a previous commet i bought new a 2002 Cobalt with 5.7 Volvo Penta 5.7 Dual Prop. Not so much with engine oil. But i am glad to see you used Volvo oil for lower units. That is a wise decision. I think the out drives were neglected. Also were the out drives original color silver/gray. BTW better get that flat head bolt/screw out. The accuracy of oil level is better when measuring by that opening. Not trying to be a know it all. But owning my boat from new and now 21 years old I have seen things. Lucky to find Volvo mechanic that can trust his work and advice. That goes a long way

Thanks for the comments. I'm not sure what the original color of the outdrives were because this is the first time I was doing it and what you see is what came out. I will say that it appears that the fluids were not the same in each outdrive. The previous owner had them done at the same time as I have the receipt but maybe the marina screwed it up or used 2 different oils. Bizarre. And I was not able to get the flat head off and couldn't wait for help doing it before putting it back in the water...so this winter I'll take care of that when I have more time.

It seems to me that the gear oil was end of life a few seasons ago. I have the same drive and I had the marina pull my drive for the heck of it. They found gear oil in the bellows and replaced a seal, glad I had them pull it.

It’s really hard to tell since I don’t have a record of when they were actually done. I will say neither engine ran hot and so my mechanic wasn’t convinced there was a problem. Now I know moving forward what I put in and of course will be doing it every year

Jeff.....I don't feel the lower unit oil you drained from either outdrive was milky or contaminated by water. Just somewhat dirty from lack of maintenance. Good job on getting the work done in amongst some obstacles.

Thanks Brian. Let’s talk about tackling a project together if you’re willing once again!

Good job. Both old drive oils were great. You will know if water got in the oil will look like a vanilla milk shake and smell horrible. As far as getting that middle fill screw out I use a small propane torch to apply a little heat to the screw and it comes right out. The only down fall is you have to replace the rubber o ring and actually every time you change the drive oil the o rings should be replaced. As far as that pin for the trim cylinder goes just tap it back in with a hammer on the side that still has the c clip on it make sure your not missing a washer or anything on the other side and put on your new c clip. And go see Rhonda at intercoastal marine if they don't have what you need they can get it fast. 12 weeks to splash. See you on the water.

Completely agree with Raymond on all points. Starboard oil isn't milky, and tapping on the trim ram pin will move it back over.

Thanks. great stuff. I did get the clip at Intercoastal as well as that Volvo adapter for the pump. I did not replace the O rings but still might.

@@eternitysshore I would recommend definitely changing the rubber bushing and gaskets on the drain plugs. it can be done with out losing a lot of the gear oil. ust leave the top plug in and it will pull a vacuum and not allow a lot of oil to drip out. Fun times a head 12 more weeks.

If you still have have the old gear oil send it out and get an oil analysis done

Not sure if the handle to the socket for the outter nut was fixed. But on mine the handle slides thru making a “T”. Then use both hands to turn the socket. Eliminates the extension bar you were using. That can bend the handle.

Hit it like you mean it and it will loosen.

Yeah. I’ve heard that. I’m kind of limited actually on hitting it super hard as I have nerve damage in my neck so next spring I’ll have someone else give it a whack or two. Thanks for the comment.
