The trick is to have 60BPM (1 beat per second/1 second) and 120BPM (2 beats per second/0.5 second) as reference. You just have to know if the beat is under or over 60/120 BPM, and you'll approximate pretty well

At practice one of the baroque pieces was very fast, with violin playing constant runs and single bowed 16th notes through the whole piece. We played it at the original tempo. I was struggling, and I could tell it wasn't just me. I asked first chair how he was coping, and he admitted he wasn't playing all the notes. So, I raised my hand and timidly asked the conductor if we could slow the tempo. She was agitated and said "No" and moved on to the next piece. The night of the concert we got to that piece, and guess what.....slower. I could tell. Some others in the orchestra must have also said something to the conductor. But sometimes as-written tempos are meant to be broken.
