  • The battery in my Ford F-150 Lightning's EV just failed after 11 months and 12,000 miles. This is a major issue and one that you need to be aware of before you consider buying a Ford F-150 Lightning electric truck.
In recent months, there have been a number of reports of the Ford F-150 Lightning experiencing major battery failure. I'm finding out that repairs can take months if you can find a dealer that is available. I also share my thoughts on the other electric truck options like the Rivian R1T and Tesla Cybertruck that is coming out soon.

UPDATE: My Lightning was at the dealership for the battery replacement repair for 16 days, which was actually quicker then I anticipated. A few days after I dropped it off, Ford also assigned me a "Battery Electric Vehicle Agent" that emailed/called with regular updates. If Ford has a dedicated position for this, I'm assuming battery failures are a major issue they are trying to get in front of to stop the news from spreading.
I have heard lots of stories from other EV owners that repairs are taking much longer then I experienced. I was not given an exact cost but the dealer told me if it was out of warranty the cost would have been $10,000 or MORE due to the cost of the replacement battery and significant labor required to switch the battery module out. So far no issues since I have had the truck back. I'm now on the fence if I want to keep the Lightning or not after this experience and questioning the reliability of the truck.

Just wait for the resale value hit once they're out of warranty....will be massive. And driving an EV truck as if it's a car isn't really a fair comparison to an actual truck that can tow and haul...which is what many owners use them for. Lightnings towing are pitiful with range of around 100 miles from what I've seen...not acceptable for people who need a TRUCK.

Thanks for the update on this, I was wondering about the outcome. Did they replace the entire battery, or just parts of it? If they replaced the entire battery, does the battery warranty start new and you have another 100k mile warranty from your current mileage? Guess Im thinking about the cost of fuel, ICE vs EV. That approximate math over 200k miles for ICE can be upward of $30,000 vs $12,000 for battery. Even if the new battery did cost you 15k, it still seems a little cheaper, all other things equal. It's a tough call, I would like to purchase an F150 Lightning but stuff like this has me waiting it out. Sticking with my 2010 F150 :-). Its paid for.

This situation seems to be widespread so far in Quebec, Canada and the way in which Ford manages this is unacceptable. A new product under quality guarantee should not be held at a dealership for more than a week. In the best scenario Ford could simply replace the battery with a new one and send the defective one to the workshop for reconditioning for future rapid replacement of the defective battery.

EVs are more reliable, but Ford has only 3 years of experience making EVs. Tesla has been making EVs for over 15 years. People joke about Teslas' lack of car body manufacturer experience (panel gaps and paint), but Ford's experience in manufacturing batteries, motors, and inverters is about 80 thousand units; Teslas' experience is about 4 million units. In summary, Tesla is a world-class EV, while Ford has no experience with EVs. Why anyone would buy an EV from anyone but Tesla is beyond me.

Same exact issue here. Happened late September at about 8800 miles. I’ll have to look at which module it was but it did take just under a month for the dealer to get it fixed and that was largely due to supply. I’ve put 1400 miles on since the fix and so far no issues. Ford was great at contacting and updating me. I gambled going with the Lightning but it is designed so well that it was the right fit for me. I traded in my’17 f150 eco-boost due to several factors including their 10 speed transmission experiment that only lasted 90k miles, plastic drain pans that lose their seal (trans wasn’t leaking) and ford’s consistent recall across their entire product lineup. One more issue and Ford is dead to me😂

I still think, the lightning is by far the best of the bunch. The full body on frame makes it an actual truck. It rides so nice and the frunk is amazing. There is absolutely no truck I would trade it in for that is available right now. As you saw, when you got your gas loaner. Once you drive a lightning for awhile, there is no going back. I've never experienced any issues with mine, knock on wood. But even if a similar issue does arise, I have the same understanding that this is a new first gen technical power house that I must be prepared to give some leeway. For the most part. I think they did a fantastic job but now a days most people expect perfection. They also have an 8 year warranty on the battery. I am sure even if problems persist, they will eventually figure out the issue by then. And as much as I hate dealers, Ford service centres are everywhere and they provide great perks such as loaner truck. so in the end, what really is the problem. Search out the stories if you have something major go wrong with a Tesla or Rivian. Hopefully you have even one service location near you and see if they give you a loaner truck. In the end, you always have to do what is best for you, but I know if I were in your situation, I would ride out the issues for much longer because I love my lightning that much.

Rule #1: NEVER EVER BUY A Ford-rule #2. See rule #1. Rule #3 and #4 - Never buy anything made by a GM or Chrysler. In 1985, I purchased a new Ford automobile; within the first five thousand miles, the brakes failed, and I almost died in an accident because they were not correctly installed on the car. The Ford Zone Representative told me to sue Ford; I would get nothing. Several lawyers told me you would never beat Ford in court, don't waste my time and money, and never buy another Ford. I have a 24-year-old SUV made by a German manufacturer. This SUV now has more than 370.000 miles with the original engine and transmission that keeps going and going and going with little to no maintenance or problems. I also have a Japanese car that will soon be 14 years old. This vehicle also keeps going with little to no maintenance. I have a mechanic friend who told me that both vehicles should last at least 20-30 more years. I will never consider owning a Ford, GM, or Chrysler product. A vehicle should last +20 - 30 years with a minimum of 300,000 miles.

I have driven this vehicle on several long road trips, my longest so far was over 1700 miles. Again - no issues. I believe this battery module issue is not common, but it is somewhat (very small percentage of the vehicles) is not surprising. With new technology comes new and unexpected issues. Hopefully Ford EV Engineering team is taking the data from this and improving this product.

I bought 2023 at the end of July I have 2281 miles on the truck and 10/10 I got the same message. I called Ford they towed it into the local Dealer. It is still there. Mine was the 4th module that showed a lower voltage then the rest. They were able to get the new module, but they could not get their battery balancer to work so they had to order another one. Then at the beginning of November they found they were missing the cable to connect to a Lightning to balance the new module to the rest of the battery. I just found out yesterday that each time the find some they are missing the order it ground which to me is completely unacceptable after all this time. They should be shipping overnight. The cable is supposed to arrive next Tuesday it will probably take another week unless they find some other equipment they are missing. I cannot believe they don't do their do-diligence to make sure they have everything they need. They told me this will be the first time they have done this which does not make me feel very good based on their past performance. I here that after the repair the software update will make it so it will be less sensitive to voltage differences, but I have no proof just saw it in a forum. Supposedly it will also reduce the speed of the fast charge, but again no proof. I barely got to drive this truck and already in the shop with a major problem. Since the Dealer has not done this before I hope after this is not turn into one thing after another or shabby work that causes other issues. But even after all this I like this truck. The short time I have had it I love that charging at home it costs me a fraction of what a gas or diesel truck would cost for fuel. That is the one thing why I never bought a truck because it costs you a fortune in fuel costs for day to day and little errands here and there. At first I had the range anxiety, but then I started treating it like my smartphone and just got in the habit of plugging it in every time I get down to about 50% and only charge to 80% and that has been great to always wake up to pretty fully charged truck and never have take time to go to the gas station. I am still positive on this truck I would not give up on it for anything. I love this truck. Even if Ford reduces production it will only make my truck go up in value. Proof of that is when GM first tried electric cars in the 90's and they had the small EV truck years later it cost more then the original. For all the nay-sayers on EV's all I got to say is if we had people like you back when the first automobiles came out with absolutely no infrastructure we would all be still be riding horses. Just like Microwaves and Computers it takes pioneers to get it all worked out for rest.

Sadly when a major system fails it definitely makes one lose confidence in the vehicle. It would be useful to know what percentage of the Lightnings are having such failures. If the number is above 2% of all sold that could signal lots of defective batteries sold to Ford for installation in their vehicles.
Unfortunately, in the rush to produce these EV's many manufacturers failed to have the supporting parts and supplies in stock for quick repairs leading to horror stories like this one where customers have to wait months for a repairs. The supply chain has not caught up with vehicle sales as all EV owners find out when they need something repaired.

If you do a true comparison with depreciation and initial cost, most electric vehicles come out second. I own a conventional car and a plug in hybrid. The hybrid is great for local driving, but there is no way it would be my choice on a trip or my only car.

I’ve got 67,000 miles on mine and all systems are still go. How will it be at 136,000 miles when the warranty expires? Will it make it to 200,000 miles? My break even point is 12 years. At that point I will have saved $30,000 in fuel costs, making it a free vehicle. Will it make it? There are a couple of Tesla’s being used as interstate couriers that have over 1,000,000 miles. I don’t expect that with my Bolt, but how far will it go? The experiment continues. 😊

Could you pay me enough to deal with all issues with the Cyber truck, including having an on the never-ending game of "Keep away" or "Hide and Seek" from the local branch of the "Gone In Sixty Seconds" crew.

So, I just received the same error this month on my 2022 Ford F150 Lightning Lariat. My local dealer in Maryland kept my vehicle for 11 days to order parts and replace the faulty battery pack. I am a little concerned since my vehicle was also part of the January battery recall that was only supposed to affect trucks that came from one of Ford's plants. I went to different Ford dealer for that recall and it took almost two months since their equipment broke at that location. Hence, the reason I decided not to go back to that location for this issue. I'm curious to know if EV owner's of different manufacturers like GM have experienced the same issues with the Hummer EV, Cadillac Lyriq, or even Silverado EV since they use the Ultium battery. The 2023 Lexus RZ uses a different battery pack as well. I think there is going to be a long period of learning how to maintain these vehicles at dealerships. I hear Tesla has this perfected since they've had about a decade of practice. However, I will say Tesla owners I know have taken their vehicles in for repairs far more than I have over the same amount of time of ownership. I'm looking forward to see the Lightning's refresh. Will they switch over to the 800v battery architecture? Will they be able to promise over 500 miles of range like Chevy Silverado EV and RAM 1500 REV?

My $100k Model S broke down on me after just 5k miles and 8 months. Rear inverter went bad and blew the HV pyro fuse, which left me to coast to the side of the road at midnight. Absolutely horrible and degrading service experience. They struggled to fix it over 3 weeks. Sold it as soon as I got it back and bought a supercharged V8. Much more reliable.

I question if it's the battery. I owned a 2021 Ford Powerboost (Hybrid) I had 2 major failures. Both times the dealership said it was the battery. Neither time was it the battery. Both times it was moisture in the wiring harness. The 2nd time it took 2 months. Ford customer service is a joke. If they tell you they will get back to you, expect a week and don't expect results. I sold the truck and bought a Lightning. Biggest issue is the Ford dealership are not training enough technicians on how to diagnose and repair EV's. After 2 months Ford sent a Tech from the their speciality unit and he found the problem. Other than the crappy charging infrastructure for non Tesla EV's, I am happy with it so far. That said I prefer driving my Tesla Y.

It had 48k miles on it when I purchased it 1.5 yrs ago. So far I, all I’ve done to it was change the 12 volt battery, Tesla mobile service actually drove an hour to replace it and charged me only $100. And I purchased 2 sets of tires. That’s it! And it still charges to 300 miles!
I think I’ll hold out for the Silverado EV since GM has been in the EV business as long as Tesla. I bought my daughter a 2017 Chevy bolt 200 mile range with 28k miles for $17k. It is very efficient

Electric Vehicles, or EVs, Are Not Cars
The government and auto industry wants us to believe that EVs are interchangeable with gas-powered vehicles.
EVs are not a “car” as we know them. EVs are experimental transportation devices that the government wants us to accept as a car replacement.
I believe the rollout of them was extremely premature. They look like cars, and seem to function like cars, but they are not cars.
Words and their traditional definitions matter.
Using the word car for an EV is misleading. I try to avoid it.
EVs are a completely different machine and when purchasing one that should be our mindset.
Replacements For Vital Machines (Evs For Cars) Must Outperform Their Predecessors To Be Universally Adopted
For a new product or invention, which an EV is, to replace a tried and true significant part of our daily lives, like our cars, it has to be a better choice.
Do EVs outperform cars in all important areas?
How should a car replacement be better?
    1) Cheaper purchase price, lifetime maintenance and disposal.
    2) Better performance, road handling and driving range.
    3) As many or more locations to “refuel” and lower recharging times than refueling. Overall more convenient and time saving than gas powered vehicles.
    4) Safer in all ways, including charging away from home.
    5) Seamless and transparent replacement for our current experience with cars.
    6) EVs should be less expensive to insure.
How do EVs stack up in those five categories?
    1) EVs are more expensive than gas-powered vehicles. Overall costs over time are much higher for EVs. Even if they were cheaper, the current negative impacts of the loss of convenience and functionality make EVs not worth replacing our cars with experimental replacements. Government subsidies paid to corporations and individuals approach $50,000 per EV. An EV is less functional, yet more expensive? Who thought of this great system?
    2) EVs have much higher average horsepower, but other than that the driving experience is not much different and is sometimes deficient. Range anxiety is real and total miles available on a full charge falls terribly behind a full tank of gas.
    3) Gas stations are much safer and more convenient than EV charging stations. On the road charging can average ten times longer than refueling with gasoline. EVs fail miserably here.
    4) The level of danger using an unmanned EV charging station at night in a deserted parking lot is not tenable, compared to gas stations which have personnel, lights and security cameras. EV battery explosions are commonplace.
    5) EVs are not a cheaper, more functional replacement for our cars.
    6) A true car replacement would be cheaper to insure. Middle class families already can’t afford car insurance.
EVs fail on almost every measure.
This certainly does not make a great case for EVs.
Using EVs dramatically changes your entire driving experience, one of the most important parts of our daily lives.
There are so many unanswered questions about the impact on us if the government were to ban gas-powered vehicles in favor of EVs.
Mandating EVs will change our way of life.
As with other government experiments in the recent past, they want us to be the test subjects.
I propose we opt out of this government experiment and all others in the future.
    Fad For Wealthier People
EVs are still a fad for wealthier people for the most part. Currently they are mostly an option for owners of free standing single family homes and less often owners of townhouses with a garage.
And even for those free standing single family homeowners, once you have more than one EV, it can quickly become impractical, cumbersome and unworkable.
There are government laws forcing apartment complex owners and townhouse communities to allow residents to install charging stations, but they are not widely used.
The vast majority of renters and townhouse owners don’t have the ability to purchase an EV as they can’t charge them nightly.
EVs require access to a power supply that can extend to your EV where they are parked overnight. While away from home needing a charge, you need to find a charging station.
For people who own free standing homes, with a traditional garage and driveway setup, this is relatively simple and most practical. But even then, a family with two or more EVs may not be able to charge all of them overnight. Once you expand beyond one EV, things begin to fall apart.
Many townhouse owners are in the same predicament as apartment renters.
Renters of any type of home usually don’t have the ability or finances to install the systems needed to charge an EV. They would also need permission from the landlord.
Even if an apartment complex or townhouse association installed a few, having this done on mass scale for all apartment and townhouse residents is not practical for decades to come, if at all.
Townhouses, although purchased as a residence, are more likely to be a temporary stop to a free standing home, and so installing a charging station may not be worth the investment.
Excluding these drivers will stall or make impossible the complete replacement of gas-powered vehicles with EVs.
So, what percentage of drivers are in free standing single family homes? This is the true market for EVs on the consumer level. And, again, only for one EV in the family.
Let’s take a look at the figures below.
It will tell us what % of us have severe barriers to entering the EV space.
    132,000,000 (A) - USA Households
    83,000,000 (B) - Detached single family homes
49,000,000 (C=A -B) - USA Households With Barriers To Entry Into EV Space
37.12% (D=C/A) - % USA Households With Barriers To Entry Into EV Space
    233,000,000 (E) - Drivers In The USA
86,000,000 (D×E) - USA Drivers With Barriers To Entry Into EV Space
86,000,000 out of 233,000,000 U.S. drivers cannot practically transition to EV use.
This 37% of drivers who cannot use an EV is important to remember, as it impacts the rest of the problems EV owners face.
Safety Issues At Charging Stations On The Road
Again, remember, we are imagining a world where gasoline is no longer needed and so gas stations would become a novelty.
So, with only EVs in everyday use, there will be times we need to charge away from home. Where will this take place? There is some EV charging infrastructure built out, but there are many problems. And this is with a very small percentage of EVs on the road.
Imagine, again, that only EVs were allowed. The infrastructure needed is unfathomable.
And what is the infrastructure for remote charging going to look like?
I have serious concerns here as should you.
When we need gas, we simply find an open gas station.
Gas stations have security cameras and personnel when they are open.
We take these well lit locations with employees and security cameras for granted. These safety features do not exist at EV charging locations. Most will be in parking lots of retail shopping centers with no attendants.
This decreases security and increases waiting times. That is what they are proposing. We should not accept these severe regressions of course.
Parents, let me ask you. Would you accept your children going into dark and empty parking lots, when retail stores are closed, to charge up for 20 or 30 minutes by themselves with no personnel on site?
    Of course you would not.
No security. No one in government is talking about this. Remember, they want to eliminate the safe gas stations that are an integral part of our culture and replace them with this.
This is just another barrier I don’t hear anyone discussing.
EVs are not interchangeable with gas-powered vehicles. They are a completely different machine. They are not cars.
Consumers need to demand the same level of security measures and functionality that gas stations provide.

ICE's have been being developed and improved for over 100 years. EV's are going to have some problems for a while... EV's have been around for 100+ years as well, but haven't been developed to the same extent.
