They moved from UHF Ch. 53 to VHF Ch. 7, which had started operations since 1998. The government took UHF channels 52-69 for telecommunications and emergency use. Some channels retained their digital frequencies.

Analog isn’t mostly snowy, it’s when the transmitter is not transmitting enough power.

12chapin - you may see the replacement in your lifetime, as there's already in 2020 some signals of the replacement (ATSC 3.0 replacing 1.0). There are some converter boxes for it and even WRAL in RDU-NC has put an alternative WRAL-EX signal, just like they did in 1998 for today's DT version on "1.0".

sh868sh - I do believe the first experimental TV broadcasts in Cali were like in 1931 or so (1928 was for the East Coast), so it'd be 1931-2009 (yes, this video was from that year). Also, there are news the FCC finally will outlaw analog TV totally in US by next February (2021)...
