    A little history:
    The reason that the first Color TV's used a round CRT (Cathode Ray Tube); even though B & W TV's had long used rectangular CRT's; the engineers were unable to get good color convergence and purity in the corners of a rectangular color CRT. IE:
    It takes 3 beams to make color TV; which required Red, Green and Blue phosphorous dots in those days. Because of the shallow curvature of the front of the CRT; convergence and purity of the cathode beams would be horrible. In order to have perfect convergence and purity in the corners; the front of the screen would have to be globe like. This just would not please viewers. So RCA decided to use round CRT's
    But after a number of years, they found a way to do it. The first rectangular CRT TV, 27" (color set) to be made; was presented to General David Sarnoff (CEO of RCA). And it was installed in David's yacht named "Electron", berthed in Miami, Florida.
    Believe this or not: That TV had a major problem when I opened the box; and top management at RCA had a fit (and fell in it when told them). They had me determine what was wrong. The following is absolutely true:
    I found a tiny defective part in the chassis, but there was NONE to be had. So they decided to have a "carrier" take this part (in a 1" cube box) in an airplane and I met the plane at Ft Lauderdale AP.
    He gave it to me (no security in AP's then). He flew right back to NJ; and I exchanged it for the defective part; and technicians came up from Miami and got it in Ft Lauderdale; and took it to Miami beach; and installed the TV; just one day before David was to arrive at his yacht.
    Believe it or not. I shall never forget the fury over that calamity. But after that, we all laughed about it. But IF we were not able to get that TV fixed, BEFORE the CEO arrived, "Hell Fire" would have been all over RCA; and I assure you some heads WOULD roll. As the sun rises in the "marnin!".
    End of Story.

    @scaryred24 PAL has 20% more lines of resolution but NTSC has a higher video refresh rate (30 frames vs 25 fps). So, the PAL image will have better resolution but the NTSC format works better for fast motion video So, generally speaking, if you have PAL-sourced video (DVDs, on-air or cable programming, etc.), it will look better on a PAL system. And, if you have NTSC-sourced video, it will look better on an NTSC system + tint control is an issue in ntsc

    PAL TV is better? That is too much of a broad comment. The Line frequency, Frame rate and aspect ratio is not a PAL/NTSC issue. The BBC and British Post Office experimented with NTSC on 405 lines 25hz frame rate in the late 50s and early 60s. PAL is based on NTSC, the chroma signal's phase is reversed on alternate lines enabling the phase errors to cancel in the decoder and thus do away with the tint control. Full marks to RCA and the NTSC system I say!

    • @bobweiss8682
      @bobweiss8682 4 роки тому

      Absolutely! Especially considering that NTSC was forced to shoehorn a color signal into the existing B/W standard, while maintaining full backward compatibility. A masterful bit of engineering that lasted over 50 years.

      Because old games were program for 60hz ,not because PAL sucks,,NTSC is worse with terrible colours and that tint control you just dont bother to play with becouse of constant change all the time from one channel to the other ,I live in the american continent and have seen the pictures,not as sharp and films judder especially during camara panning,,and tv lines so visible on larger screens.50hz tv picture is as smooth as silk ,dont need more frames,waist of bandwidth. and more resoulion of lines.but yeah keep on defending it.

    • @sydneynipkow
      @sydneynipkow 7 років тому

      Some tv CRT flicker more than others,depends on the persistence of the phosphors,and also how much brightness and contrast you have on the screen .I my self even notice flicker on 60hz displays!
      The flicker is not a problem any more on flat screens.
      I was always very carefull in what tv set i would buy and avoided Japanese or asian sets made for Pal 50hz region because on many models there CRT phosphors had a shorter persistance not optimised for 50hz that made the screens flicker more than a proper European CRT with a longer persistence phosphors.
      Sony trinitrons were one of the worst for 50hz
      We were treated like crap by the japanese not only on tv receivers but video gaming,not spending that extra time to properly decode and ajust the resolution.
      In Australia we started in the 80s to get lots of imports tv from asia ,and thats when quality went down.
      theres nothing like something built in Germany, but Germany of years gone by ,not now,, all is rubbish everywere.

    • @19seventy97
      @19seventy97 5 років тому

      Depending on when you are talking about, i find Japan made some very good sets.
      I have two Hitachi CRTs both from 1977, one colour, one black and white. One 20” set, another 5” portable.
      Both are great even in 2019. Both CRTs have great emissions and the 5” portable has never had a repair, and it still works.
      The 20” colour set has had 1 repair - by me - because of a slight issue with the screen. Turned out to be 2 faulty caps and a burnt resistor! Extremely easy fix.
      Try that on a British or US set, you’d probably replace a lot more than 3 components.

      It's regional. NTSC is the analog standard in North America and PAL is the analog standard in Europe, for instance.
      Bonus fact: the digital TV standard worldwide is called ATSC.

    @bnefriends92 I would be mixing a PS3 with it instead. Wii uses the same technology that's in remote controls lol

      I disagree. Analog snowiness is much more bearable than digital cutting-out. There's channels I don't consider to be within range that I did when analog was still on. Not to say I don't like digital, but they still had a lot of refining to do by the time they considered it final.

      Well it was good with analogue PAL. You got better picture, no snowy picture.

      That's on cable. Cable wasn't affected by the digital switchover. Also, you double-posted.

    • @PhirePhlame
      @PhirePhlame 6 років тому

      Cable was affected later, from my experience of channels gradually going off.
