I ran an 160k mountain race in Europe in them, and only used one pair. Gripped amazing, fit was perfect. I also like the tounge update, the 3 was too thin and the shoe bulky. This felt perfect. Favorite trail shoe of the year

Good review, I'm with you on stability but more than willing to arrange myself as the shoe is still "nimble" although high stack. The heel is a miss, debris comes in and a traditional heel was never a problem (in all my Hokas). The toe problem might be very personal, I don't have it with the MS4 but I have sometimes with other shoes, so here we go...all in all, great shoe for long, excellent grip on everything, still runnable in technical terrain with adaption, what more can you want ?

It has the same major issue as the SG5 - the upper mesh has too much stretch to lock down the shoe. The footbed is also weirdly long and the toe is very prominent due to the design. The toe catch is another problem. The heel is also a miss.
It’s a lot of issues for a $185 dollar shoe. The durability is a concern given the foam used - it’s likely to go flat in 200 miles.

OMG, I really struggled with my Clifton 8. I could figure out why I feel like the shoes curve up, and I thought it was the insole not working well. But as you described the bend due to the softness & tightening of laces - it makes perfect sense. I survived 800km with the Clifton. But it gave me blisters and I grew to resent them, but I got my money's worth!

With my wide foot. I really found them to be the best fit over my Salomon ane Asics trail shoes. The upper just fits so well and wide base makes it feel like a near perfect shoe. There's certainly always TOPO or Altra but they don't have a midsole as versatile as Hoka.

Yeah. Love this shoe so much and love how fast and free you can feel with that grip. I agree with your comment about the toe catch. Hmm. Have been tempted by this, but I am still running in the Mafate Speed 2, which have 800km on them and they are STILL going strong; upper still in one piece with a tiny bit of stitching coming out where I caught on a rock and Vibram still has some decent wear left. Bit concerned with what you said about stability and the last not being as stiff. Long time Hoka fan but find their more recent shoes just do not last as long...not a fan of the swallow tail on so many of their new shoes :/

I dont have the toebox issues or the debris as i am buying my shoes at a thight fit.. always had the SG4.. the SG5 is a disaster so now i am with these.. overall very comfy.. but on rocky technical terrain the outsole will damage very fast ..between the vibram lugs there is a lot of midsole exposed .. we need a hoka with completely covered vibram outsole... my speedgoat evo's heel tore off completely during a trailrace in Austria last year 🥲

I've run many miles in Hoka's, specifically the Mach line and the Speedgoats, and I do agree their fit is very, shall we say, interesting? I feel like I'm used to their technology but if I take Hoka out of my rotation for a couple of weeks and put them back in I can really sense the difference. I think partially it's how the shoe's kind of branch out like a tree from a tree trunk. Tight on the mid foot then a bit wider in the toe box

JW - I'd say this since I have both of those. The MafSPeed4 is a better fitting/hugging shoe, and the outsole is (to me) better than the SG5, as is the TONGUE (man that tongue is so nice, hate that thin too-short tongue on the Speedgoat). I have had zero toe catch issues on the fabric as Ethan apparently experienced. I think the material is good, durable, but might not "give" as much as SG5 but I also use ALTRA shoes and my toes are not tiny. ZERO issues with the MafSpeed 4, and I'm a former EvoMafate2 user. Uh, not sure about that but for anything trail marathon or less, I think it's a great choice. And that tread grip and tongue! Amazing. I think they'll last, too.

They are not. It's not mentioned in the reviews because it's almost never the case with (trail) running shoes. You can generally assume that they aren't and only a really small number (often made for winter running) of models have some kind of membrane. In those cases it will be pointed out.

    • @TheGingerRunner

      @yalokim5264 Рік тому

Actually the reverse way. The area which get my pinky toes squeezed in SG⁵ is growing to nice wide toe box in Mafate.
Narrow fit is what made me stay away from SG³ and ⁴.
Now, having both to try I can say:
-SG is slim & nimble, more firm % rockered
-MS is like a tank, reminds me the Olympus from Altra, but trimmed (not so crazy wide).
Note - for my rather wide feet I choose Mafate. Although, I can see your point - the upper in SG⁵ is so soft that makes it feel loose, too roomy.
Note, the upper in MS⁴ is more coarse, more tightly knitted fabric.
That may actually keep a narrower feet better 🤔
      Hope it helps.
