I have literally the same bass, 44-02 deluxe cherryburst, rosewood fretboard. I really dig it, I have a 44-01 and like it also. Mine never gets lost is the mix, I like both basses. Of course, I like precision styles also, but the necks on the Laklands play so nice with the plecked fretboards, very smooth. I'll never sell mine, I dig Laklands. Nice video, cheers !!
Had a custom lefty 55-94 built for me back when I was a teenager in 2000. I sold it 10 years ago and have regretted it ever since. Plan on buying another soon.
I played one of these recently at Sweetwater (kicking myself that I didn't buy it then) and the necks on these basses are incredible. Very resonant acoustically too. I honestly couldn't put it down. I wish they had a couple other colors but the cherry sunburst over the flamed maple is incredible (the one I played was a satin finish body and it looked and felt wonderful). Definitely picking one of these up in the future. Thanks for explaining that switch, I knew it did something with the humbucker and coil splitting but I never thought of it as being a 2 position bridge position jazz bass. Definitely makes it more lucrative knowing that.
Awesome playing! I'll always have a soft spot for Lakland basses. The MM/J pickup combination is just so versatile, and Lakland just got this formular perfectly right and made it popular. Also, the body and neck shape is really comfortable and a pleasure to play, but still keeps lots of Fender/Music Man vibes. The only thing that's missing in my opinion is a tone blend in passive mode. And I'd add a pickguard, but those are available after market. And a tone blend is an easy mod I guess. The Skyline series is an awesome value. I almost bought one a couple of years ago, but I found a very similar bass instead: A Clover Apeiron H.5, a modern Jazz Bass with a humbucker on the bridge, the awesome TheHybrid set by Delano. It's similar to a Sandberg TM, but imho better. It nails the vintage Jazz Bass sound, comes very close to a vintage StingRay, but it can only get as close to a P as a vintage Jazz neck pickup can. And in StingRay mode, both pickups don't blend as nicely as on a Lakland. If something bad would ever happen to my Clover, I'd probably get a Lakland 55-02.
Thank you for the kind words. I agree that active basses should still have a tone knob. Thats something I like about Sire’s basses. They have a tone that you can use in north active and passive modes.
Thank you for helping take my mind off the global situation. As a stingray player myself I do like the versatility of the Skyline. Very well informed video Stay safe my friend!!
That's a great sounding instrument. There is a guy on UA-cam that does covers and uses that same pickup configuration. I have been on the lookout for a Harley Benton Enhanced MP5. It has a reverse P pickup and musicman configuration.
Sounds amazing!! Could you demo a 44-01? For the record, nothing wrong with the Skyline line... I absolutely love my Skyline Duck Dunn.. it sounds monstrous
Nice video. Im a stingray fan and I've owned two lakland skylines, I regreted selling and I just picked another one Just like this one, in translucent natural. Beautiful thing, great feel playing, versatile tones, its a wonderful Bass, no doubt.
Have you ever tried playing a G&L L-2000? The L-2000 and the Lakland 44-02 / 4-94 are often regarded as some of the most versatile basses, and they're also my two favorite bass designs of all time.
Hey Rumblin man. Thanks for doing this tone demo. I'm considering one of these basses. It's really hard to find a good tone demo with good information. Just people giving their thoughts on what they think it is or has. Bad. The one thing I have noticed is I can't find a tone demo of the dip switches. I know this video is 4 years old. Would this idea be possibly in your wheelhouse to consider? As a side note. How have you been doing otherwise?!? I still have the Sabre. Played it yesterday. That thing is a beautiful beast.
Hey Rick, good to hear from you. This bass was on loan so unfortunately I can’t do another demo of it. But I agree that reviewers should be more thorough.
@@RumblinMan a bass friend sent his to me to try out. It's the skyline 55-02. It's a cool sounding bass. I like it a lot. When you engage the preamp. It's really hot. Personally, I’d rather own one each of Fender P-bass and jazz. In my experience, being a former owner myself, the Laklands sound awesome and are magnificent instruments in terms of build and quality- make no mistake about it. But they lack a certain something that my ears are looking for. But that’s just me though.
New subscriber! Great review Sir. I am a new player at 53. I have a Squire 60's Classic Vibe Squire P bass. I have been taking lessons for three months and loving it! I am looking hard at Laklands. I am most interested in playing 70's and 80's Rock. Would you recommend this bass over the 44-64 GZ?
I love Lakland, but I would recommend any bass in the world over the 44-64 GZ… because it was those terrible EMG pickups. But the Skyline 44-64 PJ Custom, with the Lakland pickups, is one of the best basses I’ve ever played.
Thanks so much for your feedback. I’ve only been playing bass (and banjo) for the past three months. I will Do more research in this and take your feedback to my Sweetwater sales engineer. Thank you friend!
If I wanted to go use in learning to play 70’s and 80’s rock, would you recommend this or another bass? Looking at a 4-string in the $1500-$2000 range? I’m REALLY looking at the Lakelands. Thanks I much Ramblin! And man, awesome playing!!!
@@mattygunn3852 I would go with either the Lakland Skyline 44-64 Custom PJ, or the Skyline DJ-4. Highly versatile basses that are great for rock, and should fit within your budget. Passive and not complicated to use.
I left one out. The Gibson Grabber G3 is my top pick in a four-string category. Type in Gibson Grabber G3. You will wonder why Gibson has not leveraged the buck and a half on all of their basses. I wish I could buy that electronics package for a modern custom. All that and no battery. Used between 1400 and 1500 and that is sure to go up.
I think this is a good studio bass. I have had the 55-01 and the 55-02. The 55-01 with a maple fretboard is better live while the 55-02 with a maple fretboard is a more docile creature with more Motownish sound and very much suited for studio work but I would not bring it to a gunfight.

Yes, if you pull the volume knob up, it goes to passive. It'll run without a battery like that or if the battery fails, the eq doesn't work in passive but the pup blend knob and coil tap for the humbucker do. It doesn't sound any better passive, it's more of a failsafe in my opinion
