    Mike Schmidt of The Phillies was the greatest third baseman ever. He retired mid season 1989, not because he couldn't hit, but he couldn't field any longer. He had over 550 HRs and easily could have had another hundred more if he went to the American League and designated hit. But he wanted his entire career to be with the Phillies. Pete Rose was once asked who was the greatest Red he ever played with. Pete said it wasn't a Red but a Phillies player.....Mike Schmidt. Pete took less money to go to the Phillies in 79 as he knew he could win them their first World Series Championship and he did within one year's time in 1980.

    • @WonkNRoll
      @WonkNRoll 8 місяців тому +2

      It took Rose two season with the Phillies and he was pretty mediocre in 1980 during the regular season and WS. He tore it up against the Astros to win the NL championship that year but Rose - ironically considering A-Rod’s answer to not chasing 700 HR and an outside chance to pass Bonds - was mediocre accumulator from 1980 onward. He hurt his teams chasing the personal glory of the hit record in his quest to pass Cobb at all costs. The Phillies were winners with Rose in spit of him, not because of him.

    Dope or not people need to give the man his flowers and accept AROD was one of the best to ever step on a baseball diamond.
    He was a 5 tool player with the Mariners, Rangers, and beginning of Yanks.
    I mean this guy was one of the best hitters in baseball for both power and avg for over 10 years and a gold glove fielder. 96’ to 07-08’ is one of the craziest stat lines u will ever see in the history of the game.
    Over a decade of just sheer DOMINANCE.
    U can argue it was the dope, but that doesn’t encapsulate why his stats are totally jaw dropping.

That said, that era of the game, nearly every single one of them (batters, pitchers, and fielders) were doped, meaning they were playing on a roughly even playing field. His amongst the elite resumes and ability to have ever played. What a sad story his career ended up being. He had the tools to be the greatest hitter of all time. But he had to cheat and take short cuts to get that dollar. Jeter, Griffey Jr, Gwynn, Ripken, Brett, all great HoF players that did it the right way and now they are beloved by fans because they didn’t cheat.

And it’s not even about the mistakes he’s made, what’s impressive to me is the man he became after not many would be able to come back and be the person he was after something as difficult as he went thru. He is lying. The MLB colluded and wouldn't sign him to avoid letting him play and getting 700. Had he done that, he would have gotten a performance bonus. Had he passed Babe Ruth for HR, he would have gotten another healthy bonus. Due to his admitted PED use, baseball didn't want him getting those incentives. The things people say in front of both a camera and an audience.
