Martini Cocktail Drink Recipe - A Working Bartender's Version

  • Ah... the one and only Martini. Most iconic cocktail of all time? James Bond would say so, as would my wife... This version is not the out-and-out original OG version. No Gin here... but this is the most common way it's requested in a (or least my) fast paced bar. My apologies for the purest Martini purest, remember: The right version/recipe is the one you or you customers want to drink.
    Cheers!

    Stirring lets you create a crystal clear cocktail, nice effect. Shaking clouds it. Also, put ice and water into glass first, so it's nice and chilled. One more thing is put the olives on the skewer so that one of the three is above the liquid.

    This is the first time I've ever been able to perfectly count out 2oz of a liquor while watching a tutorial (while you poured the vodka after the olive juice since you didn't count to it). Sweet.

    Although this is a good example of a modern martini, it isn't the classic. The true classic called for 2 parts old Tom's gin(a slightly sweeter gin) with 1 part vermouth. It should then be stirred to chill the drink and minimize dilution. The garnish was lemon twist. Other acceptable classic versions can change the type of gin or style of lemon twist.
    There are a few clues why this is the original version. For starters, the reason why the cocktail classically is made with gin can be seen by it's age. As you said, the martini is quite old. But, vodka became a popular ingredient post-prohibition.
    Also, the reason why the drink should be stirred is linked to the type of spirit. When gin is shaken, it becomes "bruised" A.K.A causing it to become cloudy. And we all know a true martini should be crystal clear.
    There are a few reasons why the modern vodka martini is made like you have shown. Firstly the decreasing amount of vermouth. A good classic martini has a flavorful gin with noticable botanicals that pairs nicely with the vermouth. A good vodka should taste like nothing or close to it. With nothing to hold up to the vermouth, the drink doesn't have the same type of taste. There is also the fact that you shake it. There are two simple reasons why it is. The fact that Bond drank his shaken. (Which he only to dilute it so he can stay sharp) Also it makes the drink so cold so the straight vodka you are drinking goes down as smooth as possible.
    Once again, this is a great video for a modern martini! But unfortunately the martini has transformed from a unique and distinguishable drink into a fast way to get hammered and an easy way to look fancy because of the iconic glass. Thanks for the video, cheers.

Im trying to approach with childlike wonder about a whole new world. Good luck to you either way. I just hope you don't base your decision on your age.

    i hate ordering martinis at normal bars for multiple reasons. seeing as most bars just store their vermouth on the bar instead of chilled like it should be unless its only out and used within a days time or so, and it is not used alot and usually sits around a lot longer than it should and degrades in quality within days or weeks if left unchilled and only really lasts a couple months chilled until its taste really suffers. So if i can get a fresh bottle of good vermouth(again most bars have cheap shit) and some good gin i may order one. also i much prefer mine with orange bitters(not something every bar has but a classic martini ingredient). so having to find out what vermouth they have and if its fresh, what the gin selection is and if they have orange bitters and then ordering a ' dry martini with gin not vodka, in a 3-1 ratio with vermouth with orange bitters and stirred, not shaken and served up with a twist' is a pain in the ass, and not exactly a bar tenders favorite order on a busy day. so i stay away from a martini at most locations.

      No. Keep watching all these videos. Stock a home bar with shaker and pourers or whatever you can get and practice at home. Make some drinks for friends or guests. Most drinks are made fairly similarly. I am refining my skills working events at convention centers with basic bars. I practice pouring with water in old liquor bottles and can basically pour a perfect serving without count aloud anymore. Best of luck

    I want to say something here to see what type of feedback it gets my biggest concern with the olives and the fruit like the lemons and limes behind the bar is that they generally just sit they are open so anybody talking to the bar or sneezing or coughing the bar also peoples hands are in them constantly so I am concerned with the cleanliness of the bar. I'm sure we all are, be well,

    A martini should always be stirred and if for some reason you shake you've got to double strain!!!

    • @calebbenoit7011
      @calebbenoit7011 8 років тому

      I have noticed single straining after shaking leaves tiny pieces of ice.
      I feel like vodka martinis are better shaken, and am more interested in the extra chill than the look for that one. I like the crystal clear look and smooth texture of stirring a gin martini though.

    prob the dude drunk too much ofthis handmade vodka before he make the vid cause def what he shows here has nothing to do with the "official" ways,
    the classical way is
    gin not vodka( i saw the vid so stfu just clarify it to also.)
    STIR! not shake (unless u james bond)
    CHILL the glass first
    and about the vermouth u pour like 10-15ml into ur mixing glass, the thing with the glass is just nonesense, is like drinking straight chilled vodka-gin.
    To sum it up, 70ml gin-15ml vermth ,2-3d orange bitters,stir serve in a chilled glass with an olive or lemon twist.
    and for the haters i ve discussed about this with Salvatore Calabrese, if u don't know who he is google him.

    • @BartendingPro
      @BartendingPro  8 років тому +7

      Mr Calabrese would be astutely aware that bartending at it's true core is just another one of the culinary art forms... there is no absolute 100% only one way to make any recipe. It's open to a chef or bartenders own personal knowledge and skill to craft the best tasting dish or cocktail. Don't get caught up in what's "right", make what your customer wants, and what tastes good.

    • @SkillsofAesthetics
      @SkillsofAesthetics 8 років тому

      +Brian Beadle Please Brian, feel free to enlighten us. If you have verifiable sources of more accurate info we'd all benefit from your wisdom. The truth is that no one really knows where or who first made this cocktail, and that the martini most likely evolved from other cocktails, so no matter what I say someone is always going to be pissed off with a "Martini" video. Bottom line if you can make one up that your customer likes, that is ALL that matters. So relax buddy, it's just bartending, not open heart surgery... Grab a drink and come chill with us
