Using A Router To Cut Shapes & Clean Out Holes

Template router bits are great for cutting out shapes and patterns, and they are the easiest way to clean out the bottom of holes. Not only can you clean out the bottom of holes, but you can also clean out the bottom of dado's or grooves. Thanks for the helpful video. Perfect timing as I'm looking to this with a current project. Was wondering how you go about sanding inside the circles. Seems difficult to do especially without affecting the integrity of the precise circle.

Hi Josh. I tried to use the same method to clean up some circles that I made with a forstener bit. I also wanted to widen the circle a little bit because my material shifted slightly on the drill press. I don’t have a plunge router, just a compact rigid router. I used the same rocker circle template that you used, along with a rocker patterning bit. I moved clockwise in the circle, but the bit kept jumping up, ruining my piece and the template. I was routering a piece that was part walnut and part epoxy. Any idea what I was doing wrong? Would using a plunge router prevent the problem?

I want to make some retangle holes 7/8" x 2.5" in 3/4" plywood. I have some 1/8" clear acrylic that I could make a template from. How would you accomplish this task? Would you make the template from the acrylic and how would you go about that with accuracy? And then what router bit would you use to cut it out in the plywood? Any detail would be appreciated.

You can use woodworking tools to cut and shape acrylic. However, I normally build my out of MDF... I find it easier. I cut them out with a jigsaw and used an oscillating spinal sander to smooth them to make them perfect. It's not really easy, but it does work. I have an online router course that covers all of that and more if you find yourself needing more instruction. Once you make a template you can use a template bit which has a top bearing that rides along the template and cuts the wood below... like the one in this video. I hope that helps.
