The Ultimate Retro Gaming Console | NVIDIA Shield TV

- Опубліковано 21 лют 2019
- After years of searching, I've found an incredible way to play classic games on HD and 4K displays. The NVIDIA Shield TV may not be the newest device on the market, but the emulation community has turned the Shield into one of the best emulator and retro gaming systems you can buy today.
If you'd like to learn more about the Shield TV and setting one up for emulation check out these videos:
• How To Setup RetroArch...
• The $139 NVIDIA Shield...

So this video was intended to be a review of the Shield TV as an all in one emulator console. If you guys are looking for a step by step how to video please check out the description above for links from other creators like ETA Prime. (highly recommended).
you need to check out hyperspin for nvidia shield
I second this, a properly customized hyperspin setup (Not just the default, loud and visually noisy themes everyone uses) will trump any frontend you can find. That's what I'm using on my custom Gam3B0x console. Though, unlike the shield mine is playing everything from PONG to Dead or Alive 6.
How do you know that the shield has 1GB VRAM? Can you please give me a link to the specs?
And SIMPLY AUSTIN he can get it all running full speed at 4 k.
You forgot Arcade. Sheild TV will easily play all the classic 80s - 90s Arcade games too with RetroArch using the MAME or FBA cores.
Sometimes I like building a retro collection. That way I have thousands of games I never play.
Leland Judsyn 😂
someone had to say it lol
Lol. That remind me of my Steam collection I got on sale. And I rarely have time to play any of it.
Nostalgia Is a bitch. It's like we are trying to reobtain the emotions we felt during the times we played this game and the times we had whenever we were that age
@@thighssancamel8653 Yes and no. Some of the old games hold up really really well and I just want to play them on a modern TV with a modern controller.
I love the beginning of your video "warning" part. Wave race music. The best
The shield literally continues to blow my mind every day and I've had it for a while but the more I add to it the more it impresses me with how well it just runs everything perfectly
For me it was the other way around. Dreamcast emulates fine now. Gamecube, wii, naomi. Too much hassle. Ps2 and 3ds is no go. I bought myself a mini pc now and i can do a LOT more emulation
@@Kaido_928 what kind of mini PC did you bought?
@@mtaufiqn5040 Lenovo M93P
@@Kaido_928 5th generation games are still needs some tweaking, pretty much any even mid range android tv can run emulators smoothly without tweaking
I've had a shield TV for years and never thought about running emulation on it. Going to try out it! Thanks!
I own all 3 Shields. Shield TV is seriously one of the best systems you can possibly buy for your TV. You’ll keep discovering features that make it better and better. It’s like a Swiss Army knife of entertainment. I bought the Shield TV on a whim and it’s the best entertainment purchase I’ve made in probably 10 years. Can’t say enough about it. Great video!
AWESOME review of a great device, I'd love to see more on this channel thanks
I completely agree with you. I have the Nvidia Shield Portable and have been playing retro games for years.
Not to mention the shield also has GeForce Now, a free service that lets you stream any steam games you own over a Nvidia server without being tethered to a PC. I regularly use mine to play Overwatch, SoulCalibur 6 and Star Wars Battlefront 2.
I really like your content you got a perfect personality for it also, its nice to see good content still being created. stick with it
im 36 years old and man these bring me back great job
This is why I love my Shield, whether I'm playing classic games, Streaming PC games from my gaming machine upstairs or I just want to watch video content, the input on my receiver never has to change to anything except the shield.. it's the best of all worlds.
Didn't know I could customize the home screen channels, thanks for this video
The shield is the ultimate mediacenter, the competition doesn't even compare (wich is a bad thing), the fact that you can play all these retro games is just the icing on the cake
After getting dissapointed with the Pi4, I'm looking forward a Shield TV instead! Easier to configure and plug/play, besides perfect emulation on DC/Sat/GC/N64 is a great seller for me
Was on the fence whether I should get one of these or not. Awesome review man. Thanks!
Shield is great for psp, PS1, some gamecube games, mame, fba, snes, nes, all sega except some sega saturn games. I use retrox, hyperspin, arcbrower as my front ends.
To play my N64 and Gamecube Stuff, i use my old Wii. But there are Issues to play Playstation and Dreamcast Stuff. the SHIELD looks amazing.
But why would I do this when I could spend $500 on a Polymega and never receive it.
Sloe Bone funny cause i have received mi e early as a tester lmao. The sheild is junk.
Jr Carclay - you received what early?
@@jrapocalypse Ya OK , junk, sure, Check out a bench test for the Shield and if that is junk I will take it ! Your box does not even come with a controller. Hahaha
Jr Carclay I’ve had a 500Gb Shield Pro since mid ‘16 i replaces my Xbox One with and haven’t looked back. I’ve used it for TV, games, emulators, and everything I needed daily since. It’s the best console I’ve ever had, bar none.
Sounds like someone is bullshit about their crap system, the mobius will always have a hell of a lot more power and support than that shite. 🤣
Been usting the Sield for over 2 years. Its perfect with RetroX :)
Great video! I just picked up my Shield today and looking forward to loading it up. You mentioned not all emulators use the home screen, do you happen to have a list of emulators that do? I've never been happy with emulator interfaces and I would rather quick launch from the home screen as you showed in your video. Thanks!
From my use
Dolphin for gamecube
Mupen64 for nintendo 64
Ppsspp for psp
Damon PS2
Darren Karln is there one available for Sega. SNES, new and etc?
Yeah is there a good one for Sega and what about Mame?
UA-cam shield tv download emulators. Lots of tutorial videos about it. I can run smash Bros brawl on the shield and it's fun.
A friend started to recommend me the Shield TV since the latest update of the Pi4 shows little hope to 2000-era consoles, while the NSTV plays them at full 60 FPS!!
I think it is worth to pay a bit more for it, Saturn and DC emulation are exactly what I'm going for!
I liked watched and liked this video back in February and watching it again now :)
The Shield is actually more powerful then the Switch because it’s CPU is clocked higher and runs faster. I got mine for Christmas and I also have a Switch, I have now put my PS4 Pro and Xbox One S away in a cupboard, and exclusively use my Switch and Shield. With GeForce Now I’ve been playing PC games! It’s a wicked device.
Masterffc ya but can it play games like fortnite at 100+ FPS maxed
Masterffc haha no I just get all those Steam PC exclusives instead.......
Masterffc Yeah in your dreams THE most popular game is only played by kids....
Arrad Bardi I can find out if you like.
@Masterffc "shut up kid. Only little kids play Fortnite"
You're wrong about the Switch being as powerful as the Shield. The Shield has a much higher clock speed than the Switch, it even supports 4k.
that's stupid lol
@Spooksville Scoob That is complete and utter nonsense. Clock speed is just as relevant as it's ever been. Raw clock speed is often not a 1 to 1 comparison between different microprocessors but on a given architecture, a higher clock speed is always faster and a lower clock speed is always slower. The Tegra X1 in both the Shield and Switch are identical except for clock speed. The GPU in the Switch changes from 768MHz in docked mode down to 307MHz in handheld mode (CPU clock doesn't change). Why bother changing clock speed if clock speeds don't matter (I still can't wrap my head around how you could ever think that's true)? The clock reduction is why many games differ in graphic quality (not just resolution) between docked and handheld. Emulators tend to be very CPU limited so the clock speed of the CPU is critical when emulating more recent systems i.e. Dreamcast, GameCube.
Switch: 768MHz GPU / 1.02GHz CPU
Shield: 1GHz GPU / 1.9GHz CPU
@Spooksville Scoob And who told you that, whomever it was they lied to you.
The Shield has the same processor, but because the unit doesn't run mobile and has more room in the shell, it can run at higher clock speeds and not worry about heat build up. The Switch however has it's Resolution is cut to save overhead on the hardware. Now run the Shield TV at 1080p and not at 4k, and you will have a similar comparison. to bad that Android TV OS is a bit heavier and gets in the way compared to the Switch OS. This leads to less amazing games being made for the Shield specifically compared to the switch. The Portability of the switch also makes a bit of a difference in how the hardware operates even when docked. Now when it comes to software available, Nvidia is stuck with android apps and the subsequent legality of emulators and blah blah blah point being that it's mostly casual games. many of which have no originality, are blatant ripoffs of arcade games that still have rights holders (candy crush saga for example) but are legally distinct. They are all either clones, piracy enablers, malware, or just outright simplistic games with very few exceptions that go against that. Now yes I understand that the shield has over features if it isn't running solo. (switch in home streaming, Nvidia's game streaming service, the Nvidia way of in home streaming if you are a total Nvidia fanboy that uses Nvidia graphics cards in their PC, but I am speaking of direct on the device playing. Nintendo's switch is (unmodified mind you.) locked into the games that are available, which tend to be more in line with what the console is capable of doing and not all simplistic garbage mobile games that either don't control well with a controller or are mind numbing. But hey, at least the shield has netflix.
Long story short, The two run on similar hardware with one being downclocked to save on heat buildup and battery life. The OS difference is the deciding factor in how these two devices perform and how they are used. If you want Media consumption with mobile games or ports of old games (emulated or otherwise) as well as streaming games at home, go with the Shield, If you want Nintendo and their first party titles and other games that actually take advantage of what the hardware can do, go with the switch.
@Diego CJ well considering you can also play PC and android games I don't see why not.
So... have you considered FPGA machine like MISTer? It does not emulate a N64 or C64 or anything else. The very nature of FPGA means that it is electronically the same as whatever it is you set for the core. Yet it does it with a really powerful CPU and memory. So no more emulation problems, HDMI output with the ability to run multiple systems along with actual arcade games. REALLY amazing.
Liked and subscribed as soon as I saw Wave Race. (Also I’m ordering the Sheild TV, seems so cool.)
Love my shield, I cant wait til they come up with a new device using their new chip.
I must say, i'm a big fan of gathering all my old consoles and games into one single device and make it as easy as possible to access those games without standing up from my chair. I love retro gaming. Although i love nextgen games too. This here seems like a pretty cool idea. But i heard of this retroarch thing recently. And that seems way simpler than having to buy a complete new television and setting stuff up.
I need this in my life! Love the video
Had mine for 2 years now. No complaints at all
Time to save up... I'm so hyped for this device
Fantastic video! Thank you
"Not every game will run perfectly" - This is the main reason why I will continue to use real hardware to play my games. Don't get me wrong, I like and use emulators for their ease of use, but I always seem to run into issues with emulators. Just when I seem to have an emulator sorted out and working amazingly, some game throws a wrench in it. A part of that is I enjoy playing games that are not considered classics. You will not have much problem playing Super Mario Sunshine or Twilight Princess, but you will have issues playing something like 'James Bond 007 - Everything or Nothing', a classic to me, but not for everyone. Nevertheless, the Shield is a great device for this and would probably suit those who just want to play the classics.
Yeah exactly. Dolphin emulator is great but Mario Tennis doesn't play smooth. Such a downer when your favourite game doesnt play
Get the 16gb version...all flash storage, no clunky hard drive. Buy a nice usb 3.0 or additional USB thumb drive to expand storage. Thats a little tip from me... to you. YOU'RE WELCOME.
Or replace the HDD with SSD.
You could buy a 1tb thumb drive even a 512gb 😉
@@FUNGAMER23 thumb drives are not a great idea. Most of them fail pretty quickly and are very unreliable. It is best to buy SATA based internal SSD along with a 2.5" SSD/HDD enclosure. Pretty cheap option that is. Reliable and gives amazing read/write spead.
Better yet, use an external SSD with an enclosure, much more storage and better performance
Just slap an ssd in it, much easier to replace when you get a drive failure.
Been using my Shield TV for emulation for 4 years, still the best device for the size and price.
RetroArch also allows access to Retro Achievments, which is a freaking fantastic way to get back into old game. Old games with cheevos, woo!
Im pretty heavy into modding and emulation. I've bought all the old consoles, the main ones and modded/hacked them all. The new ones too and I've been wanting to get one of these just to test out. I've got a pi3. Got tons of ways to play everything from Atari to PS4 but yeh be cool to try this! Some consoles seem smoother than others you start to notice. On the ps classic for example, everything is hell smooth on it. Its great for pc engine and Sega games etc. Anyway, great vid m8!!!! I've even got a Chromecast I got given to me. Its got this crazy nes/sega emulator on it where u use your tablet or phone as the controller. Pretty cool to checkout everything! Keep up the great vids!
I just found a modded Wii U, can you tell me if it's worth it? He says it plays NES, SNES, Genesis, some 64, GameCube, Wii, oh and of course the GB lines... Is that worth $150, because I really only think it's worth about $100 maybe $120... I can get used Wii U's unmodded for $80-$100 all day...
What I love about the Shield tv is that I can play console quality games like grand theft auto 5 and Fallout 4. Even games big as those only take up like 100-200 kb because I stream them from my steam account with 0 lag while connected to ethernet.
og sonic adventure music in the background go hard
I gotta pick up an Nvidia Shield Pro one of these days 😁😀
Great presentation 👍😁 👍
Theres no pro anymore
@@wilfredomendez2901 they are some on Amazon
I love my shield, had it for a few years now
I bought my Shield on day 1 in 2015. So many updates and features since it launched. I stream from my PC, played SNES games, and watch basically everything on it. Now, you can even buy Steam games and use cloud computing to run most AAA games at PS4 Pro/XBox One X level quality using GeForce NOW! Best $200 I've ever spent.
4K support in Netflix, Vudu, Amazon, UA-cam, and Google Play. HDR10 support in Netflix. Dolby Atmos support in Vudu for my movies.
I wish it supported Dolby Vision. Also, HDR support isn't on UA-cam and Google Play movies... which is weird considering those are owned by Google. HDR support in Play and UA-cam is currently exclusive to ChromeCast Ultra... Waiting for those to unlock.
Wave race is awesome!
There are a lot of options and some of them are quite cheap, pandora box, hacked dsi, having arcade controls or being able to game on the go adds a lot of value.
I own one... No wait... 2 because the first kicks so much ass. 10/10 might buy a 3rd one.
PlayStation runs like a champ on my Raspberry Pi 3b-even with enhanced resolution. It’s N64 that leaves much to be desired in that case-but the Shield TV looks like a winner with respect to GameCube and Dreamcast. Thanks for the video!
I like how he makes the power of the switch out to be some big deal.
Bad ass review I'm sold
Great video !
You should also use dig app from the Google Play store it's a frontend and really adds a bit of class
Totalmente deacuerdo me consegui uno el año pasado, y la shield es increible.
For the record, the SHIELD controller is fantastic. Melts right into my hands and has all the buttons you'd want it to.
Great video! Definitely going to look into this!
How did you get it so your emulators showed up on the side (Home screen channels) I watched the other videos and read other reviews. I have also gone through the emulator settings and can not find anything. Please let me know.
Arc browser is a great front end it's simple to set up and it really tidy's all your systems up. It does cost €10 but it's well worth it
I love this video an wish I had found this before I bought a ouya or raspberry pi especially since I live in Australia BUT that being said I think I'll buy this soon as it looks right for modernish retro games
Love my shield tv,the thing even runs lots GameCube game very nicely.Saturn,Dreamcast,n64,psx all run great.
60 fps on GC games?
@@DuckAlertBeats Hardly, some games get pretty close to stable 60s,like soul kalibur 2,a Crash Racing game(dont remember the name),crazy táxi runs pretty smooty, and more games also. For an almost near perfect gamecube emulador run we gona need an New shield version.

There's anyway to install other system to try emulators of PS2 and WiiU?
Unfortunately PS2 and Wii U emulation have a little ways to go before they're ready for Android devices like the shield. Here's to hoping that changes!
Awesome review! How many PS4 controllers or BT controllers Can you connect at once? Say for playing 4 player MAME games?
I know you can connect 2 as I've done so - I imagine 4 will work just fine
Hi , loved this video because just like you , I love classic old games such as DOS games , mega-drive games etc. Over the years I've used many consoles , and I love the idea of being able to play a variety of old favourite games only in one device. This reason alone is enough for me to start considering buying the "Shield".
One question though : are you aware if I can play Lemmings with the Shield? this is a game from my childhood and it's a must-play -game for me.
Do you know if I can play this game on the shield ? if yes , which emulator should I search for ?
thanks.
Oh and another question.. how easy would it be to hook up 4 controllers? I imagine I’d be using this for multiplayer retro game parties for games like TMNT turtles in time arcade version, NBA jam, or goldeneye. Thanks! And again, awesome video!
Thank you for making me buy this tv
for the N64 you need the right emulator,i used it in my tablet

I would recommend hyperspin on the Nvidia shield if can get it installed. It not easy,it might be easier to pay someone to do it for you.
It has been the best android TV box for 3 years, it is surprising that Nvidia haven't put out another yet though, maybe support is the reason.
That and the switch, Nvidia doesn't really want to compete with Nintendo on this kind of stuff, it's why they haven't made another shield tablet too. They market it as a multimedia device, and it works flawlessly as that, certainly better than the fire TV and apple TV, but it also comes with some native support for some console games, the ability to stream games from a PC with an Nvidia GPU and as of now, the ability to use GeForce now for free, with a couple of games you can play on the platform for free, as well as any PC games you may have on separate accounts like steam or GOG. It can do a lot and is a very underrated device indeed
Happy Chick for the Shield is a FREE all in one emulator, where you can search for roms and the program automatically runs the correct emulator when you start up the game. Clutch!
@foreigner fan really? why's that? I mean navigating the UI with the analog stick/mouse cursor isn't the best but.....
Happy Chick is a very bad emulator that is overrun by bootlegs or romhacks, also emulators in happychick is bad.
Happy Chick is garbage and is borderline Chinese spyware. It also lacks a lot of configuration options. There are far better ways to emulate on the Android platform.
@@mathieumurray3294 please share others that are better
@@2ramzyx
Try sourcing ROM backups and using a frontend like RetroArch or Retro X.
Even the .EMU series emulators on the Play Store are better.
HappyChick is objectively terrible. The emulation is bad, the performance is bad, the UI is bad, and the meta data for ROMs is often incorrect. Those who use HappyChick have never had a good quality emulation experience. You are missing out.
How do I get the emulators on the home screen?
I have the same N64 app you have but I cant see it or the games on my home screen
The Shield is amazing... when it works. Mine - which admittedly is more than three years old - has been a constant annoyance with the wi-fi randomly disconnecting (despite all other devices in the same room staying connected without a problem) and the controller/remote also only connecting when it decides to. Maybe 2/3 of the time. I still use it but would I buy another one? I'm not sure unless the newer models have better quality control.
if the shield is near your router atleast 6-7ft away from your router. Use your G wifi connection ( it's shorter distance but faster) instead of what everything else is connected to. Or connect using Ethernet ( WAY Faster)
Fcking awesome bit of kit. Centre stage in my house. Use it for absolutely everything. The PC game streaming gets hammered when everyone comes round. Easy to add Bluetooth controllers.
I have a dumb question but between the shield TV vs a gaming laptop and utilizing Kodi to add the emulators and etc.. which one would be the ideal route?
I wonder if we'll ever see a shield 2. Will they wait until switch 2 comes out?
I get horrible input lag on my RetroPi so I'm definitely looking for something like this.
That thing is sick dude
Love my sheild best purchase I've ever made u can game,stream,browse,UA-cam.
sooo a computer?
I love mine.
I use it with a 2 Terabyte Drive with the Hyperspin frontend. So amazing for retro gaming.
I was going to build a cabinet for it, but just decided to use it in my Home Theater and the family loves it.
So much nicer to sit comfortably and play classics then stand at a cabinet machine. Very happy.
That sounds like an excellent home theater device... I may steal this idea! 👌
Patchy on Gamecube and Wii emulation, Super Mario sunshine was shown and yes it runs...but not without some pretty obvious slowdown. The shields great for any generation below that though
Exactly. I have been trying for a good 2 months to get Gamecube and Wii to run the way these UA-camrs do and it is so frustrating.
Please name of this launcher, with games cover.
How’s the input lag? Thank you for the fantastic video.
They even sale a sensor bar for the shield to use your actual Wii remotes to play the Wii games.
How do they actually run though?
Great video! I’ll probably get one myself. But I have a question. You say that emulator developers will need to take advantage of android TV to get that nice visual layout. I notice in your vid that you had to go to a boring text menu to see gameboy color games. From your experience, which other developers have yet to make their apps Android TV-friendly?
I will actually never play handheld games on my emulator. I care more about n64, GameCube, ps1, ps2, Dreamcast, and 90s arcade games.
Your loss man. I never played any Game Boy back-in-the-day because I had a Genesis. I fired up the GB emulator just for fun, I've been in black & white nirvana for about 6 weeks. Having large viewable versions of these games has really sucked me into that large library.
Still using the 2015 version and it's as good as ever
do you experience any controller lag ? i tried several bluetooth controller, too lag to play fight games
I have the shield too! and it's awesome, does anyone know how to get the layout of the homescreen like the one in this video? for example all the mupen64 games, dolphin games etc all in a list? Thank you and great video.
Hi, I would be interested in seeing a vid on your dolphin setup. Thanks
Ill grab one when theres a stable PS2 emulator
You can always get it on PC, the pc emulator for the ps2 runs very well
You can stream anything from your PC to the shield including any emulator your PC can run.
Android dont have stable ones but PCsx2 for pc is flawless depending on your setup
Please advise me from your more knowledgeable experiences with this subject.....I am a one handed [left] person, who presently on my PC, use a mouse in lft, and game pad mostly operated w my hook, well, I am going to buy a Nvidia Shield and have been doing alot of research about it and it's features, use of emulators got my attention, especially I have always thought it would be fund to play some of those Wii Games, so I have really been reading up on the Wii, Wii U, Switch etc.....initially, I was thinking that probably alot of those Wii Games could be played w one hand but after looking further into it it appears alot are played with controller and nunchuck both.....what is ur experience on how much I could do playing w one hand Wii and Wii U? Does installing one of those HDMI Adapters to the Wii make the graphics equal to the Wii U on an HDTV? Do you have to buy a wireless Sensor bar to use with your emulator on the Shield?
After, getting into this research, I headed off in a more expensive direction, just buy a hopefully good used Wii U off e-bay.......but the price of FREE for Games thru Shield is hard to say NO too!
Please.....your thoughts? and THANKS!
Good question. After reading your comment, I think it depends heavily on what kind of games you want to play. Good luck, man! Let us know what you come up with, if you can...
I have so two question i have everything you mention but the gc controller adapter is not reading and what are you using for dreamcast emulators.
The Shield is not about as powerful as a Nintendo Switch, it is most certainly more powerful than the Switch. The X1 in the Switch is not clocked as high or given as much power to run when in handheld mode, and even the docked mode can't run as fast as a Shield can due to the better cooling and higher TDP and clock speeds of the Shield console. It is still the most powerful Android box available, and since no one appears to be planning to make anything more powerful, it is more than powerful enough to run emulators, and it is still the most powerful streaming Android box there is.
Was about to say the same thing. The switch is slow in comparison to the shield.
The switch runs about 395 gflops in dock mode and about 200 gflops in handheld mode! So I've heard! But the tegra X1 is capable of doing 1.24 teraflops! Which the Nvidia shield from what I've heard takes full advantage of this power! I wish Nintendo would've found a better cooling system to take advantage of this power! Third party games would look incredible on the switch! Oh well!
But Android is introducing a significant overhead that you won't find on a Switch and it's custom made OS.
Isn't a pocophone or the racer gaming phone as fast as the shield?
@@raypadilla254 if Switch can hit 1.24 teraflops 3rd party developers will support Switch even more... I just wish Nintendo would have gone with a bit more RAM...
Does it work with local mp to? If i connect 3 or 4 controllers for playing Steam games the shield (or Steam) thinks they are all the same controller.
Moonshine works though and i freakin hope this to.
This friday i organize a local mp night so i know what i am gonna do tomorrow :)
Really been looking at getting one but did you say the 2015 version or am I ok with the newest 2019 one
This has never happened before but I watched this video for 3 minutes and I'm fucking sold.
I was not sure if it could do Gamecube, I was hoping it could as there were some games I love to play with my shield
I use an XU4 running RetroPie from the RA... It runs every Rom/ISO from Atari 2600 to the PS2. I installed it on a 16GB eMMC module with a 64GB USB drive for my 7,000 ROMs/ISOs
What I REALLY like about the shield - The Gamestream option allows you to actually stream games with little to no lag from your PC. That means I can simply stream my entire Launchbox emulation setup running on my high powered PC right to my Shield, utiliing a full on frontend experience. Also, it doesn't use up any of the shield's storage space.
-Enjoy ;-)
Only if your pc is using an NVIDIA graphics card
Thanks a lot for your video. I really want to buy it. Do you know if Nvidia will sell a new powerful version of the shield?
Thanks a lot!
