  • In this video you'll learn about 9 common foods that should never be given to babies. Quite often these unassuming foods in our pantry or fridge look like perfect foods and drinks to give our little ones, but many come with risks that you should be aware of.
    These 9 foods should all be avoided, regardless of the method you're using to introduce solid foods to your baby. Whether that's baby led weaning (BLW) or any other method.
    Some of these foods are just unhealthy, while some can make babies sick and cause other health problems. This is why it's important to be aware of them.
    In the video you'll learn what each of these foods are and why it's recommended to avoid them. As always, my goal is to help inform and educate parents to empower them to make the best decisions for them and their babies.
    I hope you enjoy this one!

    Item 7 has been the hardest for me! Cheese is one of the only things my baby enjoys, but it can be high in sodium. I've found mascarpone, cream cheese, and ricotta were most agreeable in terms of low salt, but he definitely prefers things like cheddar.
    I want to be cautious with sodium but I feel sometimes like I'm keeping him back from foods he will really enjoy because they are even on the moderate sodium end. I am excited for him to turn 1 year so we can get a little bit more adventurous.
    Do you know if there is a maturation of the GI that happens at 1 year that makes these things safer, like you mentioned with honey? Or is it more of a, "by this point they are getting more water and varied diet so the sodium doesn't impact them as much" type of a milestone?

    • @ablet85
      @ablet85 Рік тому +3

      It’s a kidney issue. Babies do need some salt but not much. Over doing it stresses the kidneys. They say it can lead to bad eating habits but I’m not sure if that’s causation or correlation. Parent who give babies to much salt are as likely to ignore other health advice on food and the later issues could stem from those eating habits rather then the actual salt being introduced. Salt gets fair to much negative attention. If you’re eating home prepared meals you need to add it. The issues when your adding it on top of already high in sodium processed foods.

    • @thecomorbiditycurator8018
      @thecomorbiditycurator8018 2 роки тому

      @@Discordia5 I've consulted some pros since my last comment because I was just too curious about it. my instinct said it wasn't a good idea and I'm glad I cam trust my instinct on that.
      kefir is far more potent than yogurt when it comes to live bacterial cultures/probiotics. neither are supposed to be introduced into baby's diet until 12 months. when yogurt and kefir are eventually introduced, they're supposed to be gradually introduced along with other semi-solid and solid foods. Homemade kefir in particular can be dangerous for newborns because it isn't regulated and therefore could contain potentially pathogenic bacteria that an adult immune system could easily conquer but could make newborns extremely ill. Their little immune systems are still booting up and learning how to protect/defend. Overloading them with an intestinal infection could risk their little lives. On top of that, kefir milk is fermented. I'm told that fermented kefir milk has similar nutritional properties to unmodified cow's milk, the too-early introduction of which has been correlated with the development of iron-deficiency anemia.

    I like the thing about cow milk. Of course nothing is as nutritional as breast milk, but historically goat milk was given to premature babies (cow milk too in some cases) and I know people growth with goat milk and they are perfectly fine. According to her mother this was the only type milk her baby was capable pf digesting.
    So, think pediatrics should rethink a lot about that.

    When is a good age where we would no longer need to cut their food up in small pieces?

  • @rozannew
    @rozannew 2 роки тому +3

    I used to also just cut blueberries in half when my LO was under 12 months. I sometimes also cut really big grapes into quarters rather than half, because the halves were just so big still.
    Fruit juice isn't great, but diluting certain juices 1 part juice to 10 parts water can actually help for constipation, which is better than many alternatives. Nowadays, I still prefer to dilute fruit juice at least with equal parts juice and water. It's just too sweet any other way and isn't something that should be the daily staple for staying hydrated even when it's diluted.
    It's really important to teach young kids to drink mainly water for thirst. Children that don't get water when young, can grow up to only drink fizzy cold drink, and even sometimes energy drinks, which is an extremely unhealthy way to live.
    What I struggle with is when it's cold though. I still give water, but obviously nobody prefers to drink cold water in cold weather unless they really are just very thirsty, so my toddler drinks noticeably less water and I don't know what alternatives are the best to keep hydration up. I've tried warm milk and unsweetened rooibos tea, but the latter wasn't a big hit.

      No one in your country heard about camomile tea? Dill tea (super for colic) Cummins tea, mint tea etc? All very light and slightly WARM (another important aspekt) not COLD! (unless you are to lazy) of course its easy to turn the tap and just give water.

    • @rozannew

      @@kasiasobczyk6939 As I've said, I've tried tea. Rooibos tea is really healthy, so no problem with giving it to a little one. Problem is I prefer to NOT always give sweet things and tea isn't a big hit without extra sugar either. The little one is already over the colic stage and never really struggled with that. Obviously any variety of tea isn't going to go down without added sugar. Also, I still drink water when it's cold and I'm thirsty and that's what's healthiest. Nothing wrong with drinking water as well, just don't know what unsweetened hot alternatives there are that could work well. At this stage, warm milk pretty much is the go-to for something warm and water is the go-to for something cold. Anything with sugar added is more of an occasional beverage.

      @Rozanne how about warmed up water? You can boil some water and put it in a jug to cool down and when necessary boil a new kettle of water and combine the waters, cold and boiled to create a warm or lukewarm drink.

    I would like to add that fruit juices like pear, prune, and apple are okay in small amounts for treating and preventing constipation. My boy has a little bit of pear juice (50/50 juice + water) to help him poop.

      You could do a puree instead of juice. We find pear puree quite effective. Our Naturopath advised against applesauce until things regulated again as it's actually a binder! I was really surprised to learn that!

      Check out Done Naturally channel. She has great tips. Increasing time at the breast is the best thing for milk supply. A pump could not help me like baby could. You could put baby on the breast before each bottle feed until they get frustrated then give them the bottle. Pace bottle feeding is also important to help mimic breast feeding with a slow flow nipple (Lansinoh worked best for us). Most moms are unknowingly over feeding baby. Breast fed babies should not eat more than 2-4 oz their entire breastfeeding career. Brewers yeast also helped (Mommy’s Best is what we used) and Sunflower Lecithin. Hope this helps.

      Pumpkin and brewers yeast also helps bring back supply. Also let your bub latch as much as possible. After a certain age the saliva from a baby has an enzyme that helps activate you into producing more milk

      My pediatrician friend tells patients not to give babies under 12 months any type of milk that isn't breast milk or formula. after 12 months, I hear soy milk is a good alternative to supplement alongside formula, age appropriate solid and semi solid foods, and/or breastmilk.

    A couple of months ago out of sheer interest I happened to Google something like 'International weaning practices', one of the results that appeared was a blog written about 5-10 years ago. The blogger had asked some of her readers (all -mostly new- mothers) to write her a brief statement on what advise/ practices are commonly given to parents when they start weaning their baby, I can't remember if she was from Russia or an Eastern European country but one of the respondants said that in her country it was quite common to give babies fruit juice from about 3 or 4 months old. Now if I remember correctly she did say the fruit juice was made fresh by the parents. Most national pediatric and dental associations advise not giving any children under 5 (including babies) prepared (shop bought) fruit juice because of the extra sugar within them but fresh fruit juice as long is it's supplemented with either milk or solid food ought to be fine... shouldn't it?

    And I will not give my baby liver products, because of the high amount of vitamin A.
