  • Another session of learning to ride the King Song 16XS Electric Unicycle. Another new rider joined in to help and gave the Inmotion E20 a check ride or two. Today is the day it clicked for Dave and he was able to make some extended runs. Looks like he is well on his way!! Great Job Dave!!

I love that you have access to soft tracks to teach people where you are at. I see other instructors have that option too. Where I am at, the soft tracks are on school properties that do not allow anyone to even walk them. They locked them up, even in the summertime and chase off walkers and anyone else who gains access. There is only 1 track I can gain access to when I was learning and it was a dirt track for a middle school. So, all we have is parking lots, streets and some basketball courts.
One thing that help me and others is getting into the habit of slowing down before stepping off. The feel and visualization that helped me and others do that is imagine yourself sitting. Do a little sit squat, not a lot. It will switch weight to back and lower center making you stable at the same time. When I began doing that last year when learning, stopping when I began getting really unstable was a lot easier. Sometimes I even regain control and sat back up to keep going. Helped me when I switched from friend's V10f to my V13, which caused me to almost learn again cause of height, weight and size difference.

Same here, almost all the rubberized tracks are fenced with gates locked preventing access. I was glad to find this one and will use this location sparingly to not attract undue attention and maybe get chased off. It really is a great place to learn not only because of the softer surface but it forces new riders to make turns even though they are very mild. Going both directions will teach left and right hand turns so the new riders don't start favoring one direction over the other. I try to get the newbies to come to as close to zero forward speed as possible when stopping but sometimes it takes a little bit to register. I do like your mini squat idea, makes perfect sense. I'm going to have to try and remember to use that in future learning sessions!! Good suggestion!!

Great video! Looks like it clicked for Dave! Remember tho for the newbie--all the gear all the time, a spill really kills motivation.

You're a great teacher and obviously a terrific friend! I'm learning on my own and it's going to take me much much longer to figure this thing out.

Thank you! Yes, I can sympathize with you! I had to figure it out on my own as well. It was worth every bump, bruise and scrape though!! Stick with it, you will be glad you did!!

So you CAN teach an old dog new tricks? ;-) Well done Dave! You could tell when it kinda clicked for him on the track, where his wailing around kinda died down and he just kept going. Now that he have learned how to go forward and turn, put some cones out to teach him to make tighter turns and also slow all the way down before he dismounts.
Another thing that can help to feel more secure, is to learn how to fall properly, like a roll over your shoulder like they do in parkour or pretty much any martial arts. I learned that as a youngster riding skateboards. Have saved my ass a few times now. Practice it on grass though to avoid road rash..

I was thrilled for him when he finally made that extended run almost all the way around the track! I remember when I made my first lap like that when I was learning and how exciting that was for me anyway. Also having gear on gives you a little more courage in addition to learning how to fall. We chose the rubberized running track to soften the fall a little bit (better than hard concrete or asphalt) in case he did go down. Thanks for chiming in Johah!

Great video! Watch that E20 though--I got overconfident, no safety gear, got speed wobble, hit crack, and was thrown flat on my face so fast I didn't even know what was happening. I rode around the neighborhood first day so easy (with safety gear), a little shaky, but next time tried to speed it up and ended up getting thrown off. Tried beginner mode, way to slow, always beeping. Normal worked fine until I tried to push it beyond my skill level and ended up on my face.

Thanks Bob! Yes, over confidence can get you in an instant when you least expect it! Not only the E20 but just about any wheel if you lose your focus. It got me early on in my learning stages while riding my 16XS. Now I pay attention to what the pros say......ALL THE GEAR....ALL THE TIME!! 😏 I hope you didn't get too banged up!

Ask Dave if the E20 helped him learn the Kingsong. Opinion? After all that is the raison d'etre for the E20

LOL !! You have no idea how close to true that statement is!! Took me a while to catch my breath again. (5,500' Altitude) Have to keep telling myself I'm not 25 anymore. Just goes to prove, I'm a much better friend to them than they are to me! (Just kidding Dave) 😆

@@wntofly : Several years ago, I went to Pike Peak. Once up there, I could not breath and had to get back down real quick. Understand what you said about 5500 feet.
