Learning to ride an EUC. Dave rides again!

Made a ride into town for a group ride on a nice sunny 70ish degree November day and much to my surprise Dave was following the group chat and showed up to ride! I let the group head out and go at their own pace and I stayed back to ride with Dave. After we got back to the park where we started from, we needed to assist a nice lady to her car. Then a nice windy ride back home!!

I took a ride up through North Cheyenne Canyon to Gold Field Dr and rode through tunnel's #1 and #2 on the way to Captain Jack's trail head. Then I rode up by Seven Falls and down around the world-famous Broadmoor Hotel and golf course. The fall colors were just starting to turn in various locations along the way. I think I was a week or two early.

A new Electric Unicycle rider's first extended trip after learning how to ride on first the Inmotion E20 and then the King Song 16XS. First time he had to navigate some handicap ramps and sidewalks, some pedestrians as well as some light car traffic in the road. I would say he did pretty good!

Another learning session with a fairly new EUC rider at the local school parking lot. He tackles his first speed bumps and gets in a little practice stepping onto the wheel without holding on to anything. He, pretty much like everyone has a stumble or two which is common when you are at this stage of learning. Glad we had his gear on!

loved the street riding segment, it really intimidates me when I'm on a EUC. How do you deal with situations where the bike lane disappears and there's a ton of traffic ahead (busses stopping/going, cars turning right)? Or situations where you have to make a lot of left turns? Just use the sidwalk?
Good question! Mainly being fully aware of all traffic around me using a mirror and keeping my eyes scanning all the time. I don't have a problem using the sidewalk when that looks like the safer option. For left hand turns on very busy streets with heavy traffic I will pull into the sidewalk at the corner and use the crosswalk button to get the walk/don't walk light and cross using the crosswalk. Overall, I just try and plan my routes to try and avoid heavy traffic roads where able and when it's necessary to use them I try and minimize the amount of time on those roads. When on those roads and no traffic is around, I will try and increase my speed to quickly exit those high traffic areas and when I am riding the shoulder and traffic is going by, I reduce my speed and am ALWAYS looking for my bail out in case I come across road debris or road damage or heaven forbid a car veers over to the shoulder. My constant fear is what happened to DUF (ua-cam.com/video/4GD5C4aVyIU/v-deo.htmlsi=C09OQ_eVi8FXWN3M) when he had a flat tire while riding in/near traffic sending him into harm's way. Luckily, he was OK! When riding in a group with 3 or more riders we tend to just use the road just like a vehicle. With more riders you get more visibility, but again keeping your head on a swivel is good practice to be ready for whatever comes your way! Thanks for commenting and stay safe!
I might do something similar during the holidays here - good idea
Love it!
Great work! dave is learning quickly! one of my favorite exercises to do when i was first learning to ride euc, would be to set up cones and practice riding around the cones in various different patterns. also practicing stopping fast, can be extremely helpful, and is a critical skill to refine. great work!
Good afternoon mate!^^ Do you offer teaching services? I bought my first EUC a few months ago & I can't hardly ride it.^^; Its the Sherman L. I'm a truck driver in the U.S, and I'm willing to travel throughout the states, in order to learn how to ride my electric unicycle.^^
Hi there! While it is not "impossible" to learn to ride on a Sherman L, it is not the easiest to learn with. When new to the game of learning to ride an EUC it is a whole lot easier if you have a smaller and lighter wheel. Once you get the basic riding mastered then stepping up to the Sherman L will be a lot easier on you. You CAN learn on the big Sherman, but it will most likely take longer and might be harder on your body. In your travels if you happen to run across even a used 16-inch wheel I highly recommend you grab it. Learn to ride first on it and put the wear and tear on it instead of beating up that beautiful Sherman. If you are ever going to be passing through the Colorado Springs area let me know. I can meet up with you and give you some help! Do you have some knee pads, elbow pads, and a helmet maybe?
@wntofly Yes! I have 3 different helmets, knee guards, wrist guards, gloves, elbow pads, motorcycle boots/pants/jacket, dirt bike jacket with built-in guards. I just went through Colorado to get to Wyoming a couple days ago, so I can always get a load back through there. I can ride sitting a bit, but not for too long. Whenever I stand on it, I can go from 5-15ft, before she starts turning towards the left. Maybe I have to go faster than just 10mph in order to make it stay balanced. Any help, I would appreciate it, mate! I would sacrifice some days off & money to learn how to ride EUC's. I'll never give up on this amazing new hobby!👍🏾
@@AnkarnoExa Excellent, glad you have some good gear. Can I email you? We can continue this offline, Yes?
@@wntofly Sure thing! My email is on my profile.
@@wntofly Sure thing! Check in my description because it won't allow me to post my email here.^^;
I lost count of how many stop sign this guy ran. It appears that he's not too safety conscience nor is he worried about getting a ticket, either. (Maybe running stop signs in Colorado Springs is not illegal)
I have to disagree with you on this one. I am VERY safety conscious and what you don't see is me checking extensively for any traffic that might be approaching. IF there is no traffic, I find it perfectly safe to continue on after slowing down sufficiently to be certain I am not affecting any traffic. When the video is sped up like in this video it may make it appear one is just blowing through an intersection with no regard for other traffic. I assure you that is NOT the case. Now with that said, I have seen lots of videos where riders are just blowing through stop signs AND red lights with little or no regard for other traffic. My concern is that riding like that is going to turn public opinion AGAINST personal electric vehicle operators and get us over regulated or worse.....banned, or heaven forbid someone hurt or even killed. The more we can do as PEV enthusiasts to ride in harmony with other road traffic the better chance we will have to continue to enjoy these amazing contraptions unfettered!!
When riding a slalom type ride on an EUC, why is it called "carving"?
Because it simulates what skiers and snow boarders experience when making turns in the snow going downhill. They carve turns with their skis and boards through the snow. Carving on an EUC makes me feel like I am skiing on pavement which I can do ALL YEAR ROUND!!!! 😀😀😀
Carving also helps you control the wheel instead of the wheel controlling you. Like snowboarding you always want to be on an edge rather than just flat. Carving prevents wobbles as well as prevents foot fatigue.
@@soupnazi81 Very well stated! Thank you for chiming in!
Which one of you was riding the Sherman "L"? And what was wrong with it?
Dave (the new rider) was riding a King Song 16XS. I (the one with the camera videotaping) was riding the Sherman L I don't believe there was anything wrong with the Sherman, that is just the Humm the motor makes by design.
I never quite understood the logic of holding a helmet. If you have it, wear it? Isn't that easier than holding onto something? Why bring it if you're just going to clench it in a fist?
I wonder why it cutout.
We all were wondering the same thing. He was at or around 24 miles at that point with the first part of that mileage a 5,000' climb in altitude. I think he said his battery showed around 30 percent. I guess the speed he was carrying was just too much for the amount of battery charge he had left.
Dave is getting much better for sure. I still think he needs to relax his legs a little more, he seems so tense. 16 miles is quite a long ride though so kudos to him for making it back in one piece. Im sure his legs will be sore after that one!
Another great video. Love seeing Daves learning process. Update on me... I have gotten a lot smoother and comfortable riding, turning well, both directions and cruising about the top speed of my V8s, 20mph. If i can get me feet to not hurt so soon, a few miles in, I can get longer rides in. Unfortunately even though my elbow was feeling better, it wasnt better. MRI showed my tricep was torn. Got it reattached last week so no riding for a while. Hopefully once PT starts and I get full range of motion back I'll be back riding. Dr. says could take 5-6 months to get to full strength but I'm thinking once I'm out of this restricted mobility brace I should be able to ride again. I really want to upgrade my wheel now, looking at fhe T4 Max, Master V4, maybe S16 Pro. I like the Falcon too. Anyway sorry for the long post. Keep up the great work training and sharing your EUC content. Safe ridimg.
Good job Dave. I think you said Dave was 67 years old. I’m 62 and just starting in the EUC lifestyle. Loving it.Enjoying your videos. What was his average miles per hour for the ride?
Thank you Peter! Yes, Dave is 67 and doing well. He has taken a few knocks here and there but is bouncing right back and plugging along! I was 64 when I started so you at 62 should run circles around us old guys! I would guess we averaged 12-14 mph along that ride!
@@wntofly I really appreciate you responding. I am so much like Dave!
I have followed Dave since he started on the E-20. You are an incredible teacher, following up, guiding, leading, taking your students on progressively longer and faster rides. This is interesting to me to see how one progresses beyond just being able to stay up for a turn around the parking lot, where most instructional videos stop.
Thanks, Bob, for following along with Dave's journey. Wish we could meet up and ride more often than we have been, but weather and our schedules make it difficult. Dave gets out on his own when he can so he is able to get a little practice in until I can meet up with him.
02:58 , 06:17 - Good turns!
Awesome fun. Cheers Olympia WA
it selfbalanceing not that hard to ride just that speed are not fast if this thing to go 40 or 30 that good
Very scenic, thank you.
The ride was awesome but the cutout sucked not gonna lie. I couldnt have chosen a prettier place to cutout though. Im glad that wont be happening on the next trip out there
beautiful!!
@wintofly Every week I’m getting better and doing streets to sidewalk to trail much better. I’ve done steep hills and the Lynx still wants to go faster than I can, I’m up to 22.8 mph!
Good for you!! Keep logging those miles and don't let yourself go any faster than what you are ready for. Best thing you can do is to ride as often as you can. Build and fine tune those leg muscles. When you are up for it, we can get some of the newer riders and put together a little group ride!!
😎🤙
Thank you for this great series.
I’ve had a Lynx for about 7 weeks, learned to ride it and I’m having a blast. My first wheel. I’d like to ride a beginner’s ride sometime, I can go 15 mph on a good day! Anyway, I can get to the springs from time to time. It’s interesting to see the bike paths that can be ridden. Thanks & I am subscribed!
Congrats on your Lynx AND your progress! And thanks for the Sub. Anytime you can make it up to the Springs you are more than welcome to join us for a ride. I think having all the newer riders together for a ride is beneficial because no one feels they need to go faster than they are comfortable riding, and they don't have to worry about going to slow and holding up the intermediate to advanced riders. How far are you from the Springs?
@@wntofly I am just up the mountain and have been riding in Cripple Creek. I felt like I could have done this ride and I seem to get better every week. I’ve done a parking garage, dirt lots, sidewalks, a steep embankment up and down, scared of roads & cars.
@@Lorax_Tribe Very Nice!! Yes, I had the same fear of roads and cars when I was learning to ride. I am sure almost everyone does early on. A couple of weeks ago 6 of us rode up from Colorado Springs to Cripple Creek via Gold Camp Rd and Old Stage Rd. I am working on a video of that ride and hope to post it soon. We could have met up with you then if we knew you were up there!! 😀
About how fast was the average (MPH) speed on this trip?
Not for certain, but I am guessing we did on avg about 14-16 mph,
Aw man I should have joined this ride as well. It looks like a fun time. Ill definitely try and make the next beginners ride. Cool video!
Nice video! That guy on the phone has a horrible voice though! Nails on a chalk board.
Great ride, and you have a very attractive city.
Thanks! Yep, we had a great time!
I understand what you mean when you say "you need speed." Another cue or tip that I like to give people is to start by "shooting at an angle," meaning that you don't want to lean directly in front of the wheel. You want to lean slightly away from your mounted foot. The same movement is used on roller skates, ice skates, or skis to start from a standstill. Another one is reminding people to twist their hips to recover, or thinking of their hips as handlebars.
Oh Wow! That is a GREAT tip, Thinking of your hips as handlebars! I am going to use that for sure! Thank you!
Who makes that upper-body protection that Dave's wearing?
I asked Dave to check for you and he says it is made by "EXL". I have one similar and it is made by FOX,
Bom
You called this an extended ride. Exactly how long a ride was it and how long did it take?
I called it an extended ride meaning the longest ride that Dave had taken to date since he started to learn how to ride. We rode a total of 9 miles, and it took about an hour and 15 minutes. We took a leisurely pace to be safe. We are going to join up again soon and maybe shoot for a 15-mile ride!
You're getting your cardio. Dave owes you a beverage of your choice. I think us old guys can see the value of these EUCs. He learned so much faster with the light wheel and your coaching. Nice trigger word. Great stuff. I haven't found anyone that wants to learn except one kid.
LOL!! I hope Dave sees this! 🤪 Dave? You buying?? Yes, at this age I find it much easier to get out and see much more of the great outdoors than I ever did on a bicycle when I was much younger!! I am hoping to someday see my granddaughter riding around on one of these. Especially if I get to help teach her! That would bring a tear or two to my eyes.
Awesome! Now that my elbow is better, I've been out on my V8s 4 or 5 good riding sessions in large parking lots. Going to put in a bunch more practice hours and then head out on my first "extended" trip. I want to feel a lot more stable and consistent every time I get on. Seems like now every time I get on I have to "warm up" before getting settled. Trying to get my body to feel "natural" riding so I don't have to think about it, but ride relaxed and smoothly like you guys. Had a great improvement in my turning yesterday, hope I still have it next time I get to ride (hurricane rain coming so probable raining next several days, 😔). Again, great teaching. Safe riding.
Good to hear you elbow is healing. As you probably know the more miles you get out and ride the more your body will acclimate. I always do a bit of warm up before heading out on a run, but it only takes a little bit to wake the muscles up and get them doing what I want. The times when I remember to stretch before riding, I seem to feel better during and after. Hope you all made it through the Hurricanes OK, I can't imagine what that would be like.
Man I'm so ready for this weekends ride to Cripple Creek. Should be so crispy and clean up there in the mountain air
Should be a beautiful ride! Hope we get a big group to head up there, looking forward to it!
He will be riding the beeps in no time. 😂
Dave is rocking it!!
Great to watch Dave's journey as an EUC rider. You're a great teacher! Keep up the videos! Starting my journey in a couple weeks--Bought an E20. I ride my escooter everywhere, but EUC is so much more versatile, and on an escooter I'm just a dork on a stick.
Thanks Bob, I switched from scooter to EUC. I love being hands free. Anxious to hear how you do on your E20!!
Awesome! I started my journey about a month ago. Unfortunately, I injured myself second day out (wasn't wearing elbow pads and banged my elbow on a fence post). I thought about getting the E20 but ended up getting a V8s. Enjoy and safe riding.
We are dorks on our EUCs too!
Dave's making great progress! Enjoyed the 360 camera as well. Looking forward to seeing more of that. btw: I'm probably 5 or 10 years younger than Dave and I'd need to take a break every 5 min if I were on that trip. My knees and calves get sore, hopefully that'll pass as I get better.
I remember when I first started my calves would ache if I went to long. I don't really notice that anymore maybe because my legs adapted and are stronger or maybe because I now can move and adjust my feet on the pedals as I ride that I could not do when first learning. And yes, Dave is doing great!
mental exercise: take all the euc riders population in the world, and compare the number with car drivers, motorcycle drivers, bike drivers and even e-scooter drivers.... and you'll be aware of how much special you are. People almost floating over tar, with a single point of touch with the ground. Isn't this the nearest experience to fly?
Interesting Point!!
same day's night when dreaming their brains must have been busy wiring so many new motrocity neural connections.....
the moment you see somebody riding by himself for the first time is so magical. Kind of the same feeling when you see a kid taking his first steps. Bravo!
So much truth to what you just said!!! 😄 I really think that I was way more excited than he was!!!! LOL!
Definitely harder than it looks
Depending on the new rider, it can be. Some people pick it up in an hour or two. Some take days or weeks. For me, it seemed hard if not impossible to get it, until it clicked. Now it seems almost effortless! Absolutely worth the effort to learn how!! 😜
@@wntofly thanks for this video, definitely gives me hope :)
I have the Ninebot E+ and became a bit frustrated. I bought the Inmotion E20 and it took me about 25 minutes to get started without holding on to anything. That was a month ago. Now I ride the E20 3 times a week 11 miles. It’s fun, but a bit slow at this point in my riding. Will try the Ninebot A1 soon and have my eye on King Song 16S. Thanks for the video.
thats great. i just learned how to ride after owning the begode falcon since june.
Awesome, Way to stick with it. Welcome to the wonderful world of EUC's. Always exciting to hear about new riders!
Very informative video. Tom is picking up some real skills on his euc too.
Thank you, Bob!
Really enjoy his learning. I just got a wheel last week, a V8s. Got it Tuesday, did some back and forth rolling and short spirts in the house. Next day (Wednesday) got out to a local football field with a fence and fought it for a couple hours. Eventually I was able to take it across the field and back without falling, wobbly and flapping arms but progress, super exciting. Actually, was able to do a couple standalone mounts in between. Was super excited, basically looking like Dave is looking in the field here. Got tired and heading back to home base (the fence) and all of a sudden just before the fence, I wiped out and went flying into the fence. Unfortunately, I had all my gear on except my elbow pads and banged my left elbow severely on a fence post. Thought I broke it or tore something, ended up at the hospital. Thankfully I didn't break anything but just now getting mobility back in it. Still swollen a bit and can't put full pressure on it but getting better. I hope to be back on my learning this coming weekend (may have to be patient another week but don't know if I can or need to wait that long). I felt like I was so close and learning fast. I will definitely completely gear up fully next time. Hopefully like you say, learning on the grass will make it easier when I get on the pavement. Tell Dave I said keep up the good work. I'm 52 so it feels late for me and everyone around me is say why and you are crazy. I really want to get good and love the EUC riding world. Blessings to you and Dave.
Oh, Michael I was getting all tickled reading about your success right up to the point of your incident! Ouch!! Glad to hear nothing broke and it is getting better! I guess what they say " All the Gear, All the Time" has some merit to it! For me it's hard to admit to myself I am tired and it's time to stop for the day. It got me a few times! Just recently I was in my driveway doing a little backwards practice and was practically stopped when I needed to get my foot off the pedal, and it got hung up for a split second and I was unable to get my foot down and I went down to the concrete. Put my hand out to catch the fall and ended up with a bit of a wrist sprain. (did not go for x-rays) Yup you guessed it, didn't have my wrist guards on!! Like your elbow, my wrist is slowly improving. The GOOD news? My feet and legs are just fine and I can and have been riding all week!! I hope that as soon as your elbow will allow, you get back on your wheel and continue your learning/practice! Stick with it, you will be so glad you did!! I am 65 and I think Dave is 67. I hope to be riding when I'm 85 Good Lord willing!!!! Keep me in the loop on how you are progressing!
