Why did the mother wait so long to report her son missing? Nobody truly knows, but there certainly shouldn't be a reason for her to wait that long. Unless he went out for multiple days by himself but it doesn't make much sense......the mother might be at fault here for waiting so long, especially because of a recent murder of another young child.

idk but it could be that his confession wasn't legally proper, for example in my country the foreign lawgivers (it was done in post-war Bosnia) had the idiotic idea that a confession is legally binding only when done in the presence of the suspect's attorney.
You should know by now that killers admit to killing more people if it doesn't make a difference what happens to them. He was going to get a death sentence either way, he could have made up any number he wanted and it would have made no difference.

You know how the older generations say "it was so much safer in my day" idk if thats true, i just think since media wasn't so big as now, they just didn't know of it.
Yea, they say that because they were literal children at the time, so they wouldnt be up on the crimes and politics of the time. Their main memories of that time are movies and shows, because they can actually revisit those nice and prettified interpretations of the past. Its a mass market whitewashed Hallmark dream, not what was actually reality. People say that y/z arent "ready for the real world," when they cant even agree on whats Real or just what theyre used to being fed from reruns and TCM
This is 100% accurate. Crime rates have gone down, especially violent crimes (in the US). But news was very much localized then and nobody was being subjected to a 24 hour news cycle from all over the world. The world isn't more dangerous at all, we're just now aware of HOW dangerous it is.

that's exactly the case. the world is safer today than it's ever been, by literally every metric. it's just that information travels so fast now that we hear about every terrible thing that happens all over the world, whereas before you would only hear about major crimes that happened in your area or the ones that made the national news or something.
What’s annoying about this is if the LAPD accepted from the start that it was truly not her son, there’s a possibility that they won’t be too late to be able to find Walter still alive at the chicken coop.
100%, Northcott spent a very long time abiding the boys before killing them, if he killed them at all. If the LAPD spent their time focusing on this case and well as other cases that ended up being connected to Northcott, it’s likely they could have found him alive.
Seems that the police can't exist without any kind of scandal going on.
Even today, equally tragic events are taking place and the police are shown as the villains behind them. Whatever happened to their motto of "protect and serve"

Shane is generally chilled all the time but whenever there's a case involving brutality and abuse. His face suddenly become so sad and disturbed.. people joke about how brave he is, but you can literally see how sensitive he is.

I literally cried at the scene where Christine Collins was finally released from the mental hospital where they all accused her to be insane cause of the fact she refused to believe it wasn’t her son. And she broke down when learning that Walter was one of the victims at the chicken farm. A mother always knows. Sad.
There's a part in the movie where Christine locks eyes with a prostitute that gets released from the mental ward under the same code as her, I believe. (It was very easy to write off women as mentally unstable then and to punish them for it). Christine helps to get her and others out and it's one of my favorite parts because they don't speak to each other, there's just a respect there.

@@anonymousperson3023I assume they’re talking about a scene in the movie Changeling, with Angelina Jolie as Christina Collins, it’s based on this case. No they never proved he was there but I think that’s the publicly accepted fate of Walter Collins at this point. The nephew of the man that killed the boys identified Walter as one of the victims. I believe they did in fact tell her in real life that Walter died there, but she later said she kept up hope because a child who they thought was murdered there had been misidentified and later came forward. So she believed maybe her son was still out there alive and the police made a mistake.

I like to think that none of us get away with our poor actions, it's just that karma can be slow to take effect and other people don't always get to see it. In the movie in the court scenes toward the end, the actor playing J.J. did a good job of subtly showing signs of guilt so I wonder if the real J.J. felt any remorse for his actions.

It was long prior to DNA testing - they could identify with fingerprints and dental records, but that wouldn’t be enough to solidly identify the victims if the remains were just bones by that point.

The movie based on the story is truly one of the saddest. Angelina Jolie was terrific as Christine & her anguish where she cries “he’s not my son” is gut wrenching. Well done with this story, fellas. I honestly believe that Walter was killed in the Chicken Coop murders
Yeah it’s true that it was sad, but you gotta take the good with the bad, thanks to her speaking up and challenging the police she is a contributing factor to laws that are now in place for why now they can’t just put you in a mental institution. She’s a hero in her own right

Me and my mom talked about this situation. Honestly I know everything about my son. He looks exactly like me. I know all of his quirks. I can’t imagine forgetting any of it. If someone brought me a child that looked a little like him but wasn’t him I’d know immediately. My son would know me. I feel so bad for her and the Anderson woman from the other story of the missing son. I’d be devastated.
Apparently she did know the night of but they forced her to keep him for those three weeks even though she kept showing them proof that he wasn't Walter
She knew,but they forced her to take him at least for a couple weeks
She did know but they convinced her to take him home and "try him out" for a couple weeks or something like that. Also Ryan had a point when he said that grief might make a mother try to convince herself that it is her son when it is not. I don't think that happened here but I do feel like that's what happened in the Bobby Dunbar case.

So from what I understand from reading more into the case, the mother initially thought that her son was taken by someone that was involved with Walter’s father, who was in prison. She went on her own for a few days, trying to see if someone was trying to get back at her husband or if her husband had maybe even organized it. Once she was able to eliminate those, then she went to the police.

Gordon’s nephew sanford who he abused and forced to participate also confirmed walter was there on the farm. Some of walter’s belongings were also found on the farm. I have zero doubts him and his mother did it. Sanford said Gordon’s mother caught Gordon abusing Walter and she hatched the murder plan.

Did Arthur get to see the cowboy?

This was probably the most disturbing case of child abduction I've ever heard, poor Walter was kidnapped and abused emotionally, physically and sexually by Gordon and then was (probably) killed by Gordon's mother.
And Gordon's mother was seemingly alright with Gordon abusing and molesting his sister's son, her OWN grandson.
No wonder his sister wanted to get away as far away from them as possible.
And Christine died with the hope her son was STILL alive somewhere alright. Heartbreaking.

I currently live in Mira Loma and got to see the same house about 5 mins away. Mira Loma this decade has went from lots of dried up cattle farmland and middle aged homes to thousands of modern homes and warehouses such as Costco and Amazon. I'm pretty surprised that no one here or in SoCal know about Mira Loma's history, The house doesn't even have any historical plaques to honor the poor kids. It's just another home. And what's funny is that the house sold in 2009 and the realtor included the chicken coops as an included feature. Mira Loma was recently incorporated to Jurupa Valley, but we still use both city names in our mailing addresses. This city's infrastructure is nicer than what many people think of it today.

The film “Changeling” is based on this story. It’s heartbreaking and Angelina Jolie plays the mother amazingly.
Back then they still had the "72 hour" rule for reporting missing persons. But I agree it's still weird that she waited an additional two days to report to the police. You'd think a worried mother would be there right when the 72 hours were up, waiting outside to go report him missing.
I reckon she probably hoped he would just come home in those extra few days, was just out on an adventure with friends or something, and just wanted to do her own research by asking around before going to the police as a last resort. Maybe she didn't want to trouble the police or admit to herself that something more sinister had happened, plus back then there was more judgement against single mothers so maybe Christine was hesitant to deal with the police for that reason.

I feel pretty bad for Christine. Her husband was in jail, her 12 year old son went missing, the police rather than helping her forced someone else's child on her and even sent her to a mental asylum. Then in hopes of getting to know something about her son she goes to meet his possible murderer who then refuses to say anything...

in the book the road out of hell, the nephew that gordon forced to help with the murders tells how walter was killed along with many others. really sad book but it is the most accurate when it comes to this case since the nephew was actually there.

I read the book written by the serial killer's nephew who was a victim. The man Gordon Northcott was a total a-hole and just as mean and evil as you can believe, so I could totally believe he would string the mother along and then refuse to see her claiming he never saw the boy. He was the most despicable thing on two legs and loved torturing people so knowing he hurt the mother was probably a turn in to him.
