For me the saddest part is that he died thinking he was an unsuccessful man... little did he know that he would inspire generations and that he would become immortal.
I think the two most likely theories is Poe died from alcohol poisoning (he was a heavy alcoholic) or he died from rabies. Basically before he died he drank a lot and was picked up by the police and put in the drunk tank. A few days later he was still acting drunk and heavily refused to drink water. (Which is a common with rabies) Poe death wasn’t exactly suspicious, definitely not a murder.

Yes. No women , no booze, three healthy meals a day, properly looked after and a private studio on the premises, and free to wonder the valley and paint, recieve visitors etc. He wasn’t one to handle self care well, nor female relationships and alcohol is disastrous for people with bipolar disorder, prone to phychosis etc. Absinth in itself being very hallucinatory and the trend of the time. He was protected from local bullies too whilst in care. Probably his happiest times, as he was able to focus solely on painting but looked after. It was a very famous institution where music an art was part of the rehabiltation and only around 40 patients in beautiful surroundings. Had he stayed a bit longer maybe he’d not have died, regardless if it was his own doing or the more probable scenario of an accident. Little did he know that his paintings would have afforded him the best looking after anywhere and a comfortable home for the rest of his life only years later. I’m sure he was planning on showing in the near future, considering how prolific he’d been. It’s mindblowing that he only spent 7 years painting in his entire life. Imagine what he’d have accomplished had he lived to an old age!
@@miipmiipmiip loads of studies have been done, and they're all basically inconclusive as to why Absinthe had these effects. Few legal substances have been so written about by authors and reported to bring on "physical phantom" effects and altered consciousness as Absinthe. Whilst modern clinical studies haven been able to show that the levels of Thujol (wormwood oil) commonly present in proper Absinth would account for it being hallucinatory, during the Absinthe craze there was alot of product circulating with all sorts of dangerous additives. There's absolutely no reason to doubt some of the most brilliant intellectuals of recent centuries personal accounts of experiencing this intoxication. Does that make having a proper glass of absinthe today inadvisable for healthreasons? No, of course not. It's a bit like Mezcal and the worm... Then again, some of the nuttiest parties I ever attended were mezcal tequila bashes, much more like folk were drunk and on coke than just alcohol. Vincent Van Gogh actually was a more successful artist when he was recovering and in a healthier mindset. Proving the fact that you don't have to be suffering to be creative or an artist.
Stacia Strom-DuBord lmfao Ryan complains about art only being praised when it comes from a dark place yet ignores how his art was a representation of metal healings
Static Head i’m sorry to crash your thoughts but I highly doubt this fact. A dutch accent/a dutch native is able to pronounce the b very well, it doesn’t sound like a p unless you actually have a speech impediment. A french accent could be a maybe.. but still I wouldn’t say it’s likely
Bente A. He could have had a slight speech impediment/misspoke and just went with it. B. He moved around so there’s a big chance that he had a strange accent.
Lilli Anne i’m dutch and I speak french almost fluently. I’m pretty sure I would know if they sounded like that. As I said, a french accent is a maybe, but considering he lived in the netherlands for most of his life, i’d say it would make more sense for him to have a dutch accent. And a dutch person can pronounce it correctly easily ;). So I’ll repeat: unless he had a speech impediment I don’t really see him mispronouncing it. Obviously it’s guesswork though.
Don't forget that he was kicked out of the Antwerp Art Academy because he wasn't painting the way his professors wanted. But now, the Academy is so proud of ever having him as a student 😂
It frustrates me. I understand art styles falling in and out of style, but even if his paintings didn’t fit the norm couldn’t they not see that they were still wonderful?
Van Gogh’s emotional turmoil did not fuel his beautiful art. He actually only ever painted when he was doing better. He was a great artist not because he painted from his problems, but be cause he painted IN SPITE of them.
@hey it's ker hey I think you misunderstood me. I wasn't saying that art doesn't help mental turmoil. I was saying that suffering internally doesn't automatically help one's art or make one a better artist, unlike the popular conception of a 'troubled artist'. I totally agree with you. I am an artist too and I wish you the best in your journey
Vincent probably wasn’t calling Rene “Puffalo Pill” to be mean. He probably was calling him buffalo bill as a compliment and his accent made it puffalo pill.
While this is super cute to imagine and while I also don't feel like he'd be the type to say that to be mean, I do struggle to see how a Dutch man would not be able to pronounce Buffalo Bill, since the letter B is very common in Dutch as well and both words pretty much exist as actual words in Dutch too (buffel, bil). 😅
@@lovesFigaro Not so much cute as a sign that someone wasn't doing their research very well. As you say, the letter "B" is pronounced in Dutch as it is in English, and it would not have taken a researcher much time to find this out. And then the two giggly presenters of this video didn't bother to fact-check, either.
interesting how van gogh is given the "tortured artist" stereotype when his best paintings came out of a time when he was mentally healing. one of his most famous paintings came from a time of great joy when his nephew was born. sad how his mental troubles are romanticized when instead his healing could be admired. even more tragic if in fact the suicide theory was ran with to further this toxic narrative of mental illness being a spectacle when it makes some intriguing art
I think it was just from accounts of the residents of the village, they viewed him as strange man that was insane and hurting, and that was how we kept viewing it, in reality he knew he needed help and got himself help.
Darragh Nolan but mental institutions have always done more harm then good. Its nice that he recognized he needed help but the mental institutions especially back then do harm, I see staff today beat up patients in mental institutions

“But to me, Van Gogh is the finest painter of them all. Certainly the most popular great painter of all time. The most beloved. His command of color, the most magnificent. He transformed the pain of his tormented life into ecstatic beauty. Pain is easy to portray but to use your passion and pain to portray the ecstasy and joy and magnificence of our world. No one had ever done it before. Perhaps no one ever will again. @@asterlyons8564 i think we can all agree boys in general can be the worst, especially based on how they're raised. some boys from when they're toddlers to elders are nightmares, some are good, caring people.
The sad thing is, his brother Theodore died only 6 months later and death listed as ''heredity, chronic disease, overwork, sadnes''. He obviously loved his brother and never considered him a burden, but I'm sure he couldn't get over it and it killed him.
The woman he gave the ear wasn't a sex worker. She worked in a brothel as a cleaning lady. Her name was Gabrielle Berlatier, and was his friend. #postmortem
Yes, he also cut his ear off after a fight with Paul Gauguin. They were living together at the time and Gauguin had been kind of annoyed with Van Gogh because he was really clingy and obsessive, this was because Van Gogh idolized him and wanted to be his friend. They got into an argument and it's believed that Van Gogh had an episode of sorts. This resulted in him going back to their apartment where he grabbed a razor, running back into the street and cutting his ear off in an attempt to get Gauguin to come back. When he didn't, Van Gogh went to a brothel he would frequent for social purposes, not sexual, and gave the cleaning woman who was his friend his ear. They called for help and he was taken to hospital. #postmortem
You forgot to add that in his depressive state, Vincent would sometimes eat his yellow paint believing that it would make him happy. Note that the paint was lead at the time and he was slowly poisoning himself instead.
unfortunately, it isn’t true. his doctor wrote in some notes that he had wanted to poison himself (the doctor never mentions that he did, just that he wanted to) by eating paint and drinking turpentine, and Vincent later mentions in a letter to his brother that he supposedly is eating “filthy” things but doesn’t remember doing it. so basically if he did do it at all- he did it during bouts of illness that he doesn’t remember, not because he wanted to be “happy.” and there’s also no mention of yellow paint at all. Sooo many misconceptions and lies are told about people from the past because it’s so easy to get away with it, but Vincent never ate yellow paint to make him happy, and he also never cut his entire ear off. He cut off a piece of his ear lobe during an argument with his friend Paul Gauguin- not the whole ear.
So basically, Van Gogh was a harmless soft boi that lived his life trying to not burden others. That’s really frickin sad but kind of satisfying to know that someone so pure-hearted existed
Well, he was also intensely opinionated and argumentative about art, to the point that it sometimes drove his acquaintances crazy, lol.... But he *was* incredibly kind and compassionate to anyone he saw struggling. When he was younger and working as a preacher among dirt-poor farmers and miners, the church authorities couldnt keep him in a bed. He kept giving away his furniture, particularly his bed, to people who lacked one. They bought him multiple beds but he kept giving them away and sleeping on the floor.
And also something that's not talked much about (although sorta touched on in the video) is that a lot of his famous work was done when he was getting treated for his mental illness. I'm bipolar and let me tell ya, I became a much better writer/actor/etc once I got on my meds and could function.
I just wanna say that Theo was an awesome brother He helped Vincent financially, named his son after Vincent (Which is a very loving gesture) and stayed with him during the lowest points of his life. Did I mention that he got insane after Vincent passed away? He himself died just 6 months later? Theo is a fantastic brother.
This reminds me of that “Dr Who” episode where he was brought back to see just how much he and his work meant to millions of people. I always tear up when I think of that episode and the look on his face as he heard others discussing his artwork.

Van Gogh always makes me so sad. He was ahead of his time. People hated his art at the time because of how abstract it was and the people he cared about really didn't treat him right. I've watched so very many documentaries on him and each one just shows how sad and alone and talented he was. I wish he could. I just wish he could know how much people love his work. His work is amazing.
if it makes you feel better, there could a Van Gogh right now as we speak that is talented but also sad and alone :) bring some friendship into their life
Every sane person who understands what he faced will sympathize with him. What this video fails to mention is during his decline of mental health, he was painting, yes, but he was in a mental institution which never solved issues but made them worse.
There's this one episode in Doctor Who where they bring Van Gogh to the present and show him just how much loved and appreciated his art is and man, it's heartbreaking, so sweet. It always gets me
Although he may not have committed suicide, Vincent was still a tortured genius. He had schizophrenia along with depression and anxiety. He was truly one of the only famous modern artists who was actually a good person. He had been rejected for his paintings for most of his life and all he wanted was to be seen and heard.
According to the van Gogh Museum it's a common misconception and he only started having trouble in the last months of his life. For the greater part of his career he was absolutely fine. I.e. his style did not come from his illness

Thank you, Ryan and Shane, for standing with the notion that the whole "tortured artist" thing is basically just romanticizing mental illness, which in itself can be a very harmful thing.
That's the problem with a lot of modern entertainment the creators don't know the difference between portraying a flawed character and showing mental illness as something exciting and appealing
I think that's an interesting observation, and feel like we're doing that to the LGBT community. The suicide rate is so high in that community, I don't think we're doing them any favors. Politicians and media have made it such a taboo thing to discuss. It handicaps actual medical progress when determining how to help.

The whole thing about Vincents love for his brother made the whole "covering for the kids" thing so much more heartbreaking. I cried. I cried to a buzzfeed unsolved episode...This is humiliating.
No I also cried. I had to come to the comments just to write out how I cried. The baby named Vincent and the protection of the boys that potentially shot him were too much and I cried to a buzzfeed vid also.
Van Gogh’s most famous paintings were done while he was in the process of recovery and healing, not while his mental state was at its worst, and I think that’s emblematic of how you don’t need to be in pain to make good art-he made his best in times of light
There's a film called 'Loving Vincent' which talks about the different theories behind his death. It's really engaging and plays out a bit like a who-done-it. Also, the whole film is in the style of Vincent's paintings and it's ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL! To top it off, I think each frame was hand painted too 😊❤️
Yes! I watched it. Nearly made me cry. And yes, each frame was an oil painting. I think they employed some 100 artists to make 3000 paintings for the movie! It's incredible.
He was only away for 5 hours. Being a bit of an artist myself, he definitely couldn't have painted an entire painting. However, he might've had time to finish one.
The ending of the episode reminds me of the Doctor Who episode when they bring Vincent to the 21st century and is told he's the greatest painter who ever lived and yet still committed suicide😭😭
@19:57 why am I genuinely crying over this part? Van Goh had no idea how many people he was going to inspire for decades because no one appreciates his art during his time but he kept going nevertheless.. that gives me hope that maybe we do have a purpose in this world and that we should continue to create things that we are proud of.
Unfortunately that happens to a lot of great people. They never feel they did enough because those around them at the time made them feel like that but generations later, humanity starts to appreciate those fascinating individuals.
For my English project, I picked Vincent Van Gogh as my legacy person who inspires me. A few more facts about him: -He was named after his older stillborn brother Vincent -He left school due to his family’s financial problem -He suffered a breakdown after being rejected by a woman -Vincent was known for falling for troubled women (prostitutes and stuff), thinking he could fix them -He devoted his life to God and even taught at an all boy’s Catholic school -He refused to do the Latin part of an exam of him to become a Bishop -Theo also died a few months after his older brother -Theo’s wife continued to store and exhibit Vincent’s paintings as she was a big supporter -Vincent’s mother threw away many of his old paintings
Seemed like Van Gough loved his owner brother a lot so it makes sense for him to not want to break up another pair of brothers because one shot him. That makes sense but makes me feel sad.
i think one of my most favorite things i've learned about vincent van gogh was a letter he attached to one of his paintings he set to theo while in the mental institution and it translated to "it is so beautiful i must show you"

This was a really heartwarming episode, if you can call an unsolved death heartwarming. The fact that Vincent didn't know what his purpose was either makes me feel like less of a failure.
Van Gogh is my favorite Artist and honestly my biggest inspiration. He managed to turn his poor mental state and sad situation in life into beautiful pieces of art. Its so sad that he will never know how beloved his art is.
What bothers me about this video is about a man who struggled with mental health---depression, anxiety and these fools---that's what they are---are making a mockery of what was his legitimate struggles. You ask anybody who loves his artwork and loves him and they sympathize with him. But this video? It's a mockery and I hope it gets better--less mockery.
I feel like he probably asked someone to do the deed for him, because he couldn't do it himself. That would explain why he said that no one should be accused.
@@nadirimyers6643 Sooo you're telling me that after his brother willingly supported him no matter what he decided, giving him money, being worried for his health all of that stuff.. He would turn around and shoot him? Why?

@@dougthealligator it's a commonly believed "urban legend" that van Gogh ate yellow paint, because he thought happy colours will make him happy too, from the inside. One Mackerel I know, I mean another plausible explanation would be licking his brushes to refine the point but given the fact that VVG assigned emotion to specific colors it isn’t hard to believe that he may have done that too.
Vincent Van Gogh is my favorite artist of all time. His life, his story, and his art speak to me in ways no other artist has. His quotes hit the hardest as well. As a person who has gone through terrifying and tough times of depression and suicidal actions, Vincent was relatable in a way that I felt nobody else understood. Whomst'd've I used to feel this way about van gogh too but I saw his art several times and I got to tell you, it doesn’t really do it for me (except some of the more famous paintings, they’re pretty cool to look at), I’d rather go see other paintings. Have you seen his work irl?
@@bente1695 I'm experiencing mental health issues that seem similar to what Whomst'd've described, and FWIW I went to the van Gogh museum in the Netherlands five years ago and I remember it as a rather positive experience, even though we waited in a line for like an hour and it was kind of raining in the line. And one of my clearest memories inside the building was wondering, "Didn't van Gogh have a 'blue period'? Why doesn't this museum have a section on that?" Despite that stuff I was really glad I went. I can also easily imagine a person feeling a strong connection to van Gogh without thinking his work is too amazing. I can think of one creator (a UA-camr actually) off the top of my head who I like more for what a great guy he is/was than the actual quality of his work.
Same here! I can relate to Vincent a lot since I always felt I wasn't good enough or felt a burden to my family. He was truly an amazing, passionate artist and a genuine person. Just hope he's somewhere better now. 💖

He had severe mental illness, but since it was such a long time long time ago, everyone treated him horribly.

@@gnarbeljo8980 Absinthe does not cause hallucinations, that is a myth.

I truly adore the thought of an almost middle aged man that's dutch just very lightly and softly say "puffalo pill" :)
Bente Maybe he was mispronouncing it on purpose to make the boy angry.

interesting how van gogh is given the "tortured artist" stereotype when his best paintings came out of a time when he was mentally healing. one of his most famous paintings came from a time of great joy when his nephew was born. sad how his mental troubles are romanticized when instead his healing could be admired. even more tragic if in fact the suicide theory was ran with to further this toxic narrative of mental illness being a spectacle when it makes some intriguing art

I think it was just from accounts of the residents of the village, they viewed him as strange man that was insane and hurting, and that was how we kept viewing it, in reality he knew he needed help and got himself help.

Even named his own child after his older brother. That’s some strong love and appreciation.
You forgot to add that in his depressive state, Vincent would sometimes eat his yellow paint believing that it would make him happy. Note that the paint was lead at the time and he was slowly poisoning himself instead.
He also drank the paint thinners. Another motive for him doing this was lack of food.
That's what they told me he died of in elementary school; lead poisoning, not suicide
unfortunately, it isn’t true. his doctor wrote in some notes that he had wanted to poison himself (the doctor never mentions that he did, just that he wanted to) by eating paint and drinking turpentine, and Vincent later mentions in a letter to his brother that he supposedly is eating “filthy” things but doesn’t remember doing it. so basically if he did do it at all- he did it during bouts of illness that he doesn’t remember, not because he wanted to be “happy.” and there’s also no mention of yellow paint at all.

-He left school due to his family’s financial problem
-He suffered a breakdown after being rejected by a woman
-Vincent was known for falling for troubled women (prostitutes and stuff), thinking he could fix them
-He devoted his life to God and even taught at an all boy’s Catholic school
-He refused to do the Latin part of an exam of him to become a Bishop
-Theo also died a few months after his older brother
-Theo’s wife continued to store and exhibit Vincent’s paintings as she was a big supporter
-Vincent’s mother threw away many of his old paintings
nev luvsroses well that just broke my heart even more
"Thinking he could fix them"
Oh Vincent. Poor baby, too pure. QnQ
Seemed like Van Gough loved his owner brother a lot so it makes sense for him to not want to break up another pair of brothers because one shot him. That makes sense but makes me feel sad.
Vincent is me lol “yeah they shot me but I was standing there so it’s ok please don’t prosecute anyone it’s my fault”
i was just thinking that now
Big “you could spill soup in my lap and I’d apologize to you” energy right there
If someone shoots me in the abdomen while I'm painting in a field DONT prosecute them. they caught ME slipping

BREAKING NEWS:
According to TMZ, Shane Madej and Ryan Bergara reportedly were rushed to the hospital due to severe back pains caused by carrying the entire Buzzfeed Company. We wish them a speedy recovery.
I hope they get through this tough time
Don't do that to me. I thought something happened to ma bois.
Better get stronger backs, Cuz they're the only ones that are gonna be carrying it for a looonnngg time.
True like do they think ladylike is holding them together? Ugh no

Fun fact, recently on Dutch news they announced that they had found the alleged gun Vincent was shot with! So maybe a professional investigation about his death will start soon :D #postmortem

even the above article says committed suicide
@@johanvajse8410 yes, since that is the theory predominantly adopted by everyone, but a lot of evidence lacks to confirm it was a suicide.
besides the evidence of Vincent saying I shot myself, nothing at all to confirm
Van Gogh's story always made me sad, but this makes it sadder. If he could see how much recognition he has garnered now :(
anoja31 makes me think of the doctor who episode about Van Gogh... that one always makes me cry.
@@dyingforyou I was just about to comment that. It was so sweet to see it even though it wasn't real. Such a sweet episode. I'm sure he is looking down on his art and is painting up in the clouds though
There's an episode of Doctor Who called Vincent that makes me cry. They actually bring him to the future at the end to show him how we regard him now. I love that scene so much.
Ok, but imagine if like *shane/ryan* went missing and they have to solve their own case
I would like to see them play among us. It would be so dramatic.

The Shocking Disappearance of Shane Madej
This was a really heartwarming episode, if you can call an unsolved death heartwarming.
The fact that Vincent didn't know what his purpose was either makes me feel like less of a failure.
Ok
He had tries multiple careers but was dismissed. When he settled on art, at 27, he did it with a vengeance. In ten years he painted 900 paintings!!
Van Gogh is my favorite Artist and honestly my biggest inspiration.
He managed to turn his poor mental state and sad situation in life into beautiful pieces of art.
Its so sad that he will never know how beloved his art is.
Some of the best artists are like this, so true, incredible inspiration.
Peter_Panda there’s a movie about his death done in his art style (hand painted) called Loving Vincent. Check it out!!!!

@Demien firreo its super cute!
I hope you are fine and happy❤
This really makes me adore his art more because he was a genuinely sweet man who was having problems mentally but his art really came from his happy moments. Like beautiful flowers and a city scape that he made more beautiful
There’s an interesting theory that the exaggerated stars in starry night were actually caused by the side effect of cadmium poisoning, cadmium was used as the dyeing agent in yellow paint.
@@dougthealligator it's a commonly believed "urban legend" that van Gogh ate yellow paint, because he thought happy colours will make him happy too, from the inside. I don't think it's true, but only because it would make the whole life of his more heartbreakening, and I already cry every time I watch anything related to him 😅
One Mackerel I know, I mean another plausible explanation would be licking his brushes to refine the point but given the fact that VVG assigned emotion to specific colors it isn’t hard to believe that he may have done that too.
René Secrétan will forever go down in history as "bully boy", and frankly he deserves no less. I love it
Vincent Van Gogh is my favorite artist of all time. His life, his story, and his art speak to me in ways no other artist has. His quotes hit the hardest as well. As a person who has gone through terrifying and tough times of depression and suicidal actions, Vincent was relatable in a way that I felt nobody else understood. I have a copy of The Starry Night on my wall that I got from a yard sale, and it's so comforting to have here. The story of his death, his struggles with life and mental health, they speak to me and my own struggles.
Whomst'd've I used to feel this way about van gogh too but I saw his art several times and I got to tell you, it doesn’t really do it for me (except some of the more famous paintings, they’re pretty cool to look at), I’d rather go see other paintings. Have you seen his work irl?
i feel the same way!
I already felt a little bit of a connection to this guy but ngl this episode, and your comment specifically, made me like him even more.
vincent is the type of guy who would listen to me talk about my hyperfixations
