It’s interesting to see Homelander actually try to make a good impression on starlight when she first joined. Homelander just wanted to be loved, to satisfy something he was deprived of in his childhood. His first interactions with starlight (the first team meeting with her, this scene) he’s actually civilized and I think tries to make friends with her. It’s sad really.

I always said Homelander at the very least wasn’t insane. He wasn’t evil either like how he ends up being later in the show with how he torments Ashley or Deep but at the worst reckless with immense power.
It isn’t until Butcher starts opposing him that he starts to crack. Butcher forces him to not be able to pretend to be a good person.

It’s honestly a bit more unsettling when he’s not being a prick. I feel like he’s almost more creepy like he’s gonna pop off at any moment but he’s chill rn lol.
And then he just gets pulled back into being a lunatic, almost like he doesn’t want to. He’s just so fucked up in his head he can’t help it.
Actually, because Starlight doesnt know the real Homelander at this point, she's about as safe from him as possible because he's trying to give her a good (and false) impression of him.
His horrid upbringing gave him a deep psychological scar that makes him crave acceptance, care, love, and all those kinds of things. Basically, for this short moment anyway he's genuinely being kind to her becsuse he doesn't want to "disappoint" her.
Its also one of the coolest parts of his character arc in the show imo, each time we see him again, we slowly but surely watch him stop caring about his image. Its what makes him uniquely terrifying amongst super villains, its like standing on a beach and watching a hurricane approach, or watching the fuse burn on a stick of TNT

It’s weird seeing Homelander act personable and have a someone decent conversation, knowing what depths he’s capable of.

One of superman's powers people don't talk about enough is his super-patience and super self-control.
Homelander has human levels of patience and self-control, which are easily exceeded by pressures.
His ego, and his upbringing, don't help matters.
There’s a bit more depth to Homelander not even bothering with a secret identity. See, for demigods with incredible power, it is humbling to walk amongst mere mortals for a day. Homelander denies himself this cleansing experience, allowing his ego to consume him.
