Sean Daniel I was hoping you would have performed one of your great original numbers at the end. Nice setup though; you thought of everything. Thanks again!
Old guy here. Back in the early sixties we knew about minimal equipment. One of the bands I was in, we plugged in the mic, guitar and bass into a two channel fender bassman amp. It worked good enough to play gigs with.
A useful and nicely done run-through for your topic. Thank you! :-) I did solo work with a rhythm unit decades ago, then retired to take up a more stable family-man life. Now I'm retired from the more traditional workforce and daydream about doing some small local solo gigs.
Man Sean thanks alot, i've been busking for the last six months and someone gave me a gig to play for 140 people in 6 weeks, i never done such a thing before had no clue of what i need, but now i got an idea.In the end it felt like you were really talking to me soul directly :') ,like today i was sitting in an irish pub where the pub band was playing live, then one of the players kept saying that anyone who wants to join them after a couple of songs, should do .So only after one and a half beer did i decide to go and ask if could jam with them, man it was the best experience i had in days. Much Respek and Love :D
I am a singer songwriter, gigging , solo artist. I am using all of this gear after a fashion. I use a fishman sa220 instead of that bose. But i learned all of your information from playing for 25yrs. its nice to know im on the right path lol. thanks for the video
Hey that’s my mixer. I love that thing. Also I have a theory that you can tell if someone is a guitarist or vocalist in their soul by which one they plug into channel 1.
My bands called PARASITE (were a Grunge Band)but we haven’t played any shows yet but we’re gonna start in the garage so all we need is Drums, bass, guitar, guitar pedal, mic stand, mic, mic amp, bass amp, guitar amp, bass cable,2 guitar cables and maybe some doubles and a extension cord also I’m 13 at the moment so we don’t have all that fancy gear
Nice demo. I use the TC Helicon Solo FX 150 and I have a TC Helicon vocal harmonizer pedal on top of all that. Much as it is always nicer to have a bassist alongside, it does give me to option to go totally solo when the situation requires or makes it inevitable.
only critique! The towers only work for small rooms if you want a quality listening experience for everyone. They don't throw far enough for larger size rooms. I use a powered Electrvoice EKX 15p and it sounds killer. A little more of a chore to setup and use, but worth it for consistent sound regardless of the sizer and shape of venue
I have a Bose pa and since I bought a Roland street amp I never use it .its so easy and sounds great I leave all set up on a water camping trolley with a pull over cover .its great for pub gigs .my mic stand and iPad and cables all slot into it and guitar slots on the back .i wheel it in plug in and I'm good to go .i unplug the instrument ends of cables roll them up bad my guitar slot in my mic iPad and stand and wheel it out to my sub open back door lift it in .shut the door and go for a curry .i don't need a mixer the amp has every input I need even for tracks if I ever use them .they are on the pad in song book app.the easier the better .lose a little bit on sound quality but nobody ever notices the slight difference .roland sound great in 99% of rooms I play .cheers good gigging
Very cool to hear! I've heard great things about that Roland amp actually. Really whatever is easiest to setup and move around. People really don't mind like a 10% difference in sound fidelity or whatever it is. Gig on my brother!
Nice setup. I found that for playing electric guitar that a gig bag can hold everything but the kitchen sink and you can wear it freeing up both hands to carry the rest. A light amp is good as well. I went from having to make 3 trips to only one. It's nice to have your gear always safely in sight. You can keep it in sight when you can carry it all in one trip.
I'm planning on busking soon so kinda different but still cool to see the gig process. I'm gonna get a roland street (battery powered amp) and then use my guitar and looper pedal. that's it.
My 2 cents; as you say, be prepared. Be self contained. Nothing more annoying than someone showing up asking for an extension cord, or an extra cable or battery. Or making excuses to the audience, “Sorry, I forgot my tuner. I have to tune by ear.” Be redundant. Don’t rely on anyone. Of course, the old joke applies when defining a musician: “Someone who packs $5,000 worth of equipment into a $500 car and drives 100 miles to make $50.”
Oh I know! Just last week I stopped by a coffee place to check out some music and good thing because the kids there needed to use a bunch of gear I had in my car.
Great video! I'll be retiring in a few years and would like to spend my spare time entertaining. Lots of good advice but I think I'll be adding a pedal board.
Gosh I love this video. So informative! Maybe make a video into how you set up PEDALS for live gigging. It's so cool to get a perspective on how people set up their rig and gear
2 words: Grace Bix. I borrowed one for an acoustic show last weekend using my Martin GPC Aura GT and even with the Aura preamp set to pure peizo, the Bix did wonders to make it not all thin and buzzy and when I blended in more of the Aura profile into the sound, it sound really good and the Bix just lets you tweak the perfect places in the EQ to get a fantastic sound. My Fishman Paracoustic DI box is on borrowed time.
Good video. I use to have a similar setup and now have tried to get rid of cables and power, and so I use the JBL EON One Compact speaker set (2), and wireless 2.4GHz and 5.8GHz systems depending on possible interference. I always have backup cables, etc. Have you tried going "wireless"? I got rid of my mixer since I just use the inputs on the speaker(s). I even have wireless Shure mics. I have eliminated so many problems by going wireless! Set and teardown are quick, I don't have to depend on venue power, or power outages, I can walk around the venue with guitar and connect with crowd! Tell me if you have had any of these experiences.
Hey there Sean, I like the setup (y) I watched this video as I was making an excel sheet in an attempt to become more organized with what to take lol I use a pretty similar setup, except without a mixer and PA system (usually expect the venue to have it, otherwise I rent and charge extra). The thing is that depending on the venue, you will need different power and distribution of sound, so it's difficult (and expensive) to have scenarios covered. I would also suggest using a tablet holder, unless you are going with papers/books/sheets. I have found out the Hercules tablet holders to be quite sturdy and nice to have just handing on the mic stand. Other things to carry for gigs which I believe are essential (at least for me): extra set of strings, capo, and my voicelive3 looper and guitar/vocal processor (Adds a lot to a gig). Cheers for the interesting videos and sorry for the long message
Thanks so much, I am a singer who hasn't found a instrument playing partner yet to gig with so going to connect an iPad to play tracks. Suggestions welcome. Would also love to hear you play. Sounded good just with the bit played for checking.
I'd usually have a backup guitar just in case the electronics decide to fail for no reason or something. But since my primary guitar has an Aura preamp and my others don't, I also bring an Aura pedal for the backup guitar. I don't like having a ton of extra stuff, but tossing that pedal in a backpack isn't a big deal.
Alright. So I’m not experienced with a pa and mixer at all I’ve been using an amp to run a mic and guitar through, I have no clue on how to work a mixer any suggestions?
I use a VOX 50w Acoustic Amp w/Mic Input. I installed an speaker out jack so I can add another speaker to spread sound out more and way less stuff to tote ! Nashville Singer/Writer/Guitarist
Hi Sean. I have the same mixer and highly recommend the microphone stand adapter from Yamaha that enables you to attach the mixer to any microphone stand. It’s the Yamaha BMS10A. Thanks for the great video!
First time I heard of anyone else using an Audix om5. No bleed through of other instruments. I love mine in fact it's my second one in twenty +years. Honestly though, when I used to play in bars that had their own sound guy, it was often a nightmare. If it's not a shure 58 most "sound guys" were lost because it is not the same to set up. It's Super Active. If you let another singer who stands back from the mic use it their vocals will fade in and out. You gotta plan your moves ( breath & volume). You gotta stay one inch away. Love love love my Audix om5. Vocalists don't use industry standard!
Great thought on the extra cables. Now that I'm legally blind I can no longer lug my Fender Passport 500 on disabled transport so what I came up with is just my Roland J55 stereo jazz chorus for guitar and a Fender Frontman 15G for vocals. I have a cheap wireless headset mic which is pretty trebly but can be corrected with the Fender's EQ. It works fine at home and with a dolly is super transportable. Haven't tried to take it out yet but I will try after COVID. First rehearsal with my blind bass player and we'll give it a try. Back when I could see and drive I bought a Rodeo so I could lug my amp and pa for a 7 piece. That's just not possible any more.
The speaker set up I have seen before when I was playing a big club, the support act had two of these speakers but the sound was thin and weak compared to my full speaker PA, I would avoid them strictly because of that, I do need new speakers and interested in the powered EV's 1000 watt per side, I think for a small pub only one speaker would be needed. The desk looks like the desk I am using at the moment, good little no nonsense desk! good luck.
Thanks for watching! Awesome little mixer. The Bose Compact is great for a lot things (specifically acoustic guitar and vocals, but as a full range PA it can get overpowered in some settings)
Hey Sean, appreciate the video. Definitely stood out for me because you weren’t on your couch (I didn’t know you wore shoes!) are there any videos on your channel of you doing a live gig so that we could see this in action? Also, do you ever do gigs/jams with an electric guitar? How does that change your setup? And what is your pedal board like?
You can always buy the Mic Boom later (could be supplimented or augmented with a goose neck) . I have acquired a bunch of junk microphone stand parts that can be re-assemble a multitude of ways.
Nice video dude but I just want to point out that if your cables are breaking it is almost definitely because of the way you are putting them away, there is a very good reason that people coil them in a specific way and that is because by letting them knot like a lot of yours seem to be or by pulling them too tight you pull the cable apart inside the casing, the rubber around it stretches but the actual cable doesn’t. Aside from that you have a pretty cool setup, I’m totally getting that PA, that thing is awesome.
Yeah, your cables are a mess and you are damaging them, reducing the useful life. Google “over/under cable coiling”, view the UA-cam videos to learn how. Then get Velcro cable ties. For example 8” x 1/2” work great for cords up to 50’.
Great. I have a Bose L1 Model 2 and have played a bass DI’d to it. I do use the Bose Tonematch rather than a regular mixer, but that shouldn’t make any difference.
Those are great choices for the mike, PA , and mixer, but $ 1100 for those items when you are young and $100 is big money or just getting started and maybe not even getting paid, $1000 is kind of steep. If someone is strapped for cash you can get a SM58 mike and cable for less than$100. Behringer sells a really good mixer with conventional and USB output for ~ $100. Likely you have a looper, reverb and delay pedal, and you can control them without having to mess with the mixer. In a bar or a noisy hall or outdoors an inexpensive bass amp will sound just as good as a small PA. The Fender Rumble 25 or Peavey 158 can be found for ~ $100 and will give you an 8 inch speaker for good bass, and a warm sound that carries well. One thing to consider is using an electric guitar instead of an acoustic, even with Bose small speakers when you crank up the volume on an acoustic with a pick-up to be heard over a crowd at a small gig you get a lot of sympathetic vibrations that make a very boomy, sharp and clipped sounds. A Tele will fit in a small gig bag, doesn't feed back, and is practically indestructable. Keep it simple, people were gigging without ipads and bluetooth with no problems just a few years ago. Also if you have friends that have been playing for a long time and have lots of old gear, they might be willing to loan you a mike, mixer or amp/pa - often the best solution when you are just starting.
Great video.... i did some shows back in the day... worked in Spain, for a few months doing gigs. PA system consistes of Mixing desk, Minidisc player, we had some cordless Mike's and we did all the songs with backing track's LOL crazy times. Had help carry those massive speakers we use to have. Normally we would be the entertainment for the night at these 4 and 5 start hotels. Our show consisted mostly of up tempo Motown type music.... thanks for your awesome video Buddy. Great Job
Sean Daniel Very true Sean. I guess I am getting a bit old and like my mixer to be at the right height and within easy reach. Works for me!!!! Thanks for your channel.
"I'm so happy I splurged on getting a decent boom stand, because it makes all the difference." Dude what DIDN'T your splurge on? Everything in your gig rig is top end! I can see why you're "in the market for a nice leather jacket."
I was on board until I saw your tangled cords lol. Over under coiling is best practice and tbh everyone should use it to extend the life of their cables? Not everyone can afford to replace them all the time. Otherwise solid content, thanks for sharing.
I am so happy I checked your video. I wanted to buy a portable PA system, but thanks to you, a good speaker and a mixer will do the job!!! I am saving your video to look at it again before my first gig!!!! Thank you so much for all your tips! Really helpful!
We have a lot in common in terms of gear lol I gig through a Bose L1M2 with T1 tonematch and B2 sub for larger gigs and either 1 or 2 B1 subs for small to medium shows. I use the Audix OM-7 mic and various pedals for acoustic guitar, and also use high end Takamines because I love their Cool Tube preamps and Triax pickup configuration. The pedals are OKKO Coca Compressor, Strymon Big Sky Reverb and Strymon Ola chorus. Oh and most importantly I use a Tripplite LCR2400 Line conditioner that has saved my butt on hundreds of gigs that have had ground faults and low power. I've lost $8,500. worth of gear due to brownouts and nearly every gig has power issues, mostly overloaded circuits. Brownouts kill gear super fast and Monster and Furmans do not protect against brownouts :-)
Hey Daniel Ziegler, yeah bro I tell everyone that will listen. I wish someone would have told me before I lost 8500. in gear due to overloaded circuits leading to a brownout. Brownouts are what has taken my gear out every time, and it happens so quick you have no time to react, on top of that every time it happened I had a Furmann or Monster surge suppressor that it also killed. Sad fact is only a line conditioner that is rated for brownout protection will bail you out. The good thing about the Tripplite is they have a 25,000 guarantee that is anything gets taken out while plugged in then they will replace it up to 25K, and I also know if there is a power jump, drop or a line fault with the front panel readout. Pretty awesome insurance for a 250-300. investment :-)
Was so hoping for a Jam sesh after! ohh well, i used to play coffee shops back high school and wanted to get back into it, just bought me an Electic/ Acoustic a few chords and a Dynamic mic today so now i got a few more hundred dollars to spend! thanks for this great video!
plus - some talent, thick skin and a girlfriend with a real job
All those are must-haves.
@Paul Nye, ain't that the truth... LMAO
My band split up a few months back. Apart from the odd solo keyboard gig I suggested to the Missus I need to go busking to 'keep the chops' especially on guitar. I work from home so am pretty flexible with my time. I thought lunch time would be a good time for a break as well as busk. She hit the roof. Some of the places I was targeting were near her work place (a government department). Apparently, it would be social suicide if her workmates saw me busking, lol!
@Paul Nye hahaha yeah boiiiiii
😂😄✊🏾😎👍🏾..........funny cuz it's true!
How can you thumbs down this guy. He seems pretty smart and took his time to make this helpful video for beginners who need help... Plus he seems like a nice guy.
Because he's totally rambling. This video could be more to the point and be a 1/3 as long.
I think you forgot the Ninja Vanish smoke bomb in case something goes wrong. Essential.
You definitely kick Ass Bro!!!!
ROWDYtheCAT just wish you could set up in our living rooms? Not speaking on behalf of your audience... But me... My dunce cap glowing. I need your help bro!
I'm strongly investigating ninja vanish bombs over the xmas break.
I never leave home without it!
🤣🤣🤣
Yes!! Call out Apple on their BS adapters.
Still for sure making the switch next phone?
Been gigging for about 7 or 8 years. Wish I would have seen this when I was starting. Great video man!
Thanks so much!
Another great lesson! You come up with ideas no one thinks of but addresses real world needs. Thank you to you sir!
Happy to help Jeff!

Same here but was a 1976 Fender twin reverb with JBL speakers.
A useful and nicely done run-through for your topic. Thank you! :-) I did solo work with a rhythm unit decades ago, then retired to take up a more stable family-man life. Now I'm retired from the more traditional workforce and daydream about doing some small local solo gigs.
Great to hear you're getting back into it!
Wow....great video, this really helps demystify the requirements for a basic, but great sounding stage setup.
Thanks for checking it out!
The Fishman Loudbox mini is a great budget priced PA and is relatively light weight.
Do a video of you going to your gig and actually setting up. And then the rest of the video we can watch you play a set or two.
that would be awesome!

I recommend bringing a Honda Generator to place on stage for power outlet.....
Also a good call.
yeah get that fire alarm going
That's some solid Ozarks advice right there!..haha
Hey that’s my mixer. I love that thing. Also I have a theory that you can tell if someone is a guitarist or vocalist in their soul by which one they plug into channel 1.
Always guitar channel 1
My drums always get channel 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8. :p
Great practical info for new gigging musicians. Thanks Sean!

Great and very helpful, Sean. Thank you!
Happy to hear it!
Dano we use the exact same Bose speaker system with the tower tweeters and let me tell you it will rattle the room with a beautiful clean sound.
Heck yeah! Bose L1 buddies!

I once watched an oasis tribute band. They travelled from Sunderland to Bolton and played to 10 people.
@@seandaniel23 dam, you must ride around with guitars and Pa in your trunk?😳😂.......
A foot switch to turn the reverb off when you’re talking.

Thanks man! I'll try and do a pedalboard vid again soon because a lot has changed since the last one. Also working on filming some live stuff.
You can always buy the Mic Boom later (could be supplimented or augmented with a goose neck) . I have acquired a bunch of junk microphone stand parts that can be re-assemble a multitude of ways.
Good call!
@@seandaniel23 I would like to find a Tap & Die set with the same threading as Microphone Stand Hardware.
Great video and so TRUE. I always bring 3 sets of cables. Very good info for anyone wanting to play out. Nice job on the video.
Thanks for checking it out!
Great, informative vid, Sean. Thanks!
Thanks for watching as always Terry!
Nice upload. Very helpful for inspiring artists.
Happy to help!
Thanks soo much!
Thanks so much man! Definitely a big Bose fan.
Yeah, your cables are a mess and you are damaging them, reducing the useful life. Google “over/under cable coiling”, view the UA-cam videos to learn how. Then get Velcro cable ties. For example 8” x 1/2” work great for cords up to 50’.
I only use my phone, a microphone with stand and a set of speakers with amp for a GIG. Not a musician. but it works well in my case. 😊
How do bass notes sound coming out of your Bose? I play Baritone guitar and I'm curious how it handles deaper notes.
Great. I have a Bose L1 Model 2 and have played a bass DI’d to it. I do use the Bose Tonematch rather than a regular mixer, but that shouldn’t make any difference.
Yes my friend you are well equipped. No worries there.
How every many years on it is since this first went out... this is good stuff man. Really cool. Thanks pal.
love the janoski's ;) and the video. If you know you know.
I appreciate the sneaker love!
Great video! I have the Bose and love it! I play keyboard.
Thanks for watching!
Great video, simple to understand. Where is the reverb coming from, the PA or the Mixer?
Forgot your Flute Bro.
Unforgivable error on my part.
Sean Daniel 🤗
Hey!! I play flute!
Great Job
Thanks for checking it out! Keep on rockin!
Take an extra music stand and put your smallish mixer on that. You can position it perfectly for your needs.
But that would take away from the charm and adventure of finding random things to place it on :)
Sean Daniel Very true Sean. I guess I am getting a bit old and like my mixer to be at the right height and within easy reach. Works for me!!!! Thanks for your channel.
Great video, thanks!
Playing my first gig in a few hours! I found this video really helpful while I’m packing my stuff. Thanks!
How did it go?
@@sargeantshithead it went great thanks!
Thanks for the inspiration
"I'm so happy I splurged on getting a decent boom stand, because it makes all the difference." Dude what DIDN'T your splurge on? Everything in your gig rig is top end! I can see why you're "in the market for a nice leather jacket."
Hello Daniel, great video
A small request, can you provide list of everything in the video, with BRAND name and model...plzzzzz...
Excellent video.
Thanks Molly
Some of those small mixers will mount on a mic stand. Very handy.
Looked it up. Yep Mic stand mounting with adapter. Optional BMS10A microphone stand adapter (sold separately) allows mounting
I put my mixer standing upright on the music stand with the cables through the holes and there is still room for the iPad to sit next to it
Love the video! Thanks
Happy to help!
great great video...are there any other great videos like this that incorporate a guitar/vical looper station set up too???
That bookbag is like an abyss bro! Useful video and informative!
I was on board until I saw your tangled cords lol. Over under coiling is best practice and tbh everyone should use it to extend the life of their cables? Not everyone can afford to replace them all the time. Otherwise solid content, thanks for sharing.
Cool video !! Thanks
Happy to help!
I am so happy I checked your video. I wanted to buy a portable PA system, but thanks to you, a good speaker and a mixer will do the job!!! I am saving your video to look at it again before my first gig!!!! Thank you so much for all your tips! Really helpful!
Thanks mate
This is an outstanding performance on how to set up for a performance.
We have a lot in common in terms of gear lol
I gig through a Bose L1M2 with T1 tonematch and B2 sub for larger gigs and either 1 or 2 B1 subs for small to medium shows.
Great tip. I need to get a strymon big sky. Love my Timeline.
Great comment on the line conditioner. I’ve read about them, but don’t see to many Gear rundowns that mention them...except for the big pro bands.
You will absolutely LOVE it :-)
Hey Daniel Ziegler, yeah bro I tell everyone that will listen.
Happy to help! Rock on!
Thanks for that. Very helpful video 😀
Hi Sean,
Can you share some video of you playing live and maybe what your set list is?
Great idea, I'll get on it!
Love the green bud!!!
Thanks so much!
Thanks. Very helpful.
I’d like to see how you set up r iPad and backing tracks. Tx
Could you plug more that one guitar? Fender Strat or Tele? Bass Guitar? I'm really new to Giging setups.
Depends on the mixer. The one I use, yes. But you'll just need to see how many inputs it has.
Great video...helpful TIPS !!!!
I do it with an aer compact amp. Supersmall and good sounding
Nice! I'll need to try one out.
