I love that you address having an image, because I absolutely cannot take a band's dedication seriously when they walk up on stage with bermuda shorts and high tops. Lemmy was right - an audience doesn't want to pay for a show where the band/ artist looks like they just walked out of the garage, fixing a lawnmower.
I love that analogy (fixing a lawnmower!) Yes, you're right...image is important! I think it also shows that you care about what you're doing and the audience will see that.
😅
I learned this when I was directing short films. I had the same actors for several films and they went from an plumber in one film to a pirate in the next. And way more than I anticipated it came down to their costume and make up. In terms of music. You want the audience to know you are the talent when you walk in or on stage. You don’t want them to wonder why a plumber is taking the stage. They might assume that you’re there to announce that the toilets are out of order :)
Hey there! 🙋🏻♀️ Natalia here.
I’m on a mission to network with other female musicians and happy to have found you here. ☺️ As a solo acoustic musician, I have been performing live at various venues for close to 20 years now. I find it so exciting that you’re open and ready to share your talents with the world! 🌟 I am all for helping encourage other females to get into the industry because we have shortage of female musicians where I’m from! I know, it’s crazy! 🥹 If you’re open to chatting a bit about some the struggles you’ve been having starting up, I would love to exchange insights! I think that it’s amazing that you’re starting to build the courage to take those steps into performing live and securing bookings!! 💫
🎶🎤🎸☺️ Super informal convo if you’re open to helping answer a few questions for my research. I am so happy to share any helpful tips with you about getting into the industry. 🥰 Do let me know if you’re up to chatting! Thanks darlin! Just so you know I’m human, this is me ☺️🙋🏻♀️ www.nataliafaculo.com

Thank you Jason. 66 years old with first solo gig next eeek after many open mics for me. You have a nice style and demeanor for this.
Thank you 🙏
This guy can sing, play guitar and has big biceps. Goals man
🙏 🤘
Hey Jason, I’m an 8 year full timer doing the “up to 4 hours” sets as a singing guitarist.
These are all the things I did to get started and I’m here watching it now because… the grind never ends. Watching this is a great reminder for me. Thanks for posting.

Thank you brother and glad to hear you're out there doing it!
Don't forget extra cables (mic & guitar) in case your main one(s) crap out; extra strings; spare capo etc.
Extra cables does come in handy!
Excellent advice. May I add then when going to Open Mic venues, be sure to support the other acts, no mater how inexperienced they are. Don't be judgmental.
That’s extremely important and valuable advice!!! 🙏🏻
Yes, open mic etiquette is so important. Be prepared, be proactive, and be professional.
You're very generous with your time and talent. I learned a lot from your video. Thank you. I wish you all the best
Thank you, I appreciate that and really glad this helped!
Thank you Jason. Great information. Much appreciated!🙂
Really glad to hear this helped! Here's a recent show I did (and rundown of my latest gear): ua-cam.com/video/SQeax1LuFCg/v-deo.html
I’m terrified, I feel like puking and having diarrhea just from watching this and thinking of doing open mic or a gig
Start by practicing 2-3 songs to the point you get really comfortable with them, play them in front of a few friends then go to an open mic. It’s a gradual process for some but you can do it
@@jasonstallworth working on it, thanks for the advice. Played a bit in front of friends last night. Gotta come out of my shell
If you're terrified then you're on the road to being a proformer. Be afraid....in time you'll feel better. Never stop...master it
My first gig at a bar/restaurant was scary. I even had a bowel movement before performing and had terrible stage fright. Not believing I was good enough was a recurring theme when I played to an audience. Eventually, these negative thoughts faded and
I’m now comfortable but could improve on engaging the audience a little.
Thank you for putting out some great information about getting set up to perform. I am 64 and I am looking forward to checking out some open mic nights and getting to do my own performance.
Thank you and really glad this helped! Here's a recent gig with a rundown on my current gear: ua-cam.com/video/SQeax1LuFCg/v-deo.html
You weren't kidding about wanting to bookmark this one. A lot of material for people that want to get their start playing out. Way to cover the necessary equipment and especially that final chapter of booking gigs. Well worth the wait
Yeah, there's a lot of info here! And I'll be making more videos going deeper into each of these segments.
Great video!! I'm shitting myself just here thinking of playing in front of people! I plan on doing it soon. Thanks for all the advice! You've got a new subscriber here. I'm looking forward to checking out your other videos. 🤘
Thank you and glad this helped!
I'm 69 years old and I played live a few months ago for the first time since my band fizzled out 40 or so years ago. I live in Brazil and my wife and I go to a local bar every Saturday afternoon where they have live music. Friends there knew I played guitar so kept trying to get me to go up and play something during the singers break, I said no a couple of times but decided to practice something during the week, then on the Saturday I nervously got up and with my growly bluesy voice did a full on version of Nina Simones Feeling Good, and man it went down a storm!! The following week I did Wonderful World and Feeling Good again and again roars of approval! Since then I fill in for the guy's break with four or five songs and, honestly. it does get less nerve racking. The singer is also very appreciative because it keeps the buzz of the bar up while he's on his break. Easy songs like those mentioned and Always on my Mind, Can't Help Falling in Love With You and one of my favourites Need Your Love So Bad work well for me, but in Brazil a lot of songs that would go down great in US aren't well known here so my Folsom Prison Blues fell rather flat and for some reason I tried Lionel Ritchie's Hello and totally murdered it so luckily I still had Feeling Good to come to the rescue. Anyway the reason I mention this is that you should follow the good advice in the video and go to an open mic with a couple of songs you've practised all week breathe in deep and do it, you'll never know until you try. I would also suggest you take some supportive friends and or partner with you to the bar to give you some confidence. Good luck.
@j.blogsblues thanks for that! I was supposed to play at an open mic a few weeks ago. I dragged my mic, amp, and guitar all the way there, being a nervous wreck the whole way. I carried my stuff in only to find out that the event got canceled. I was a panicked mess all day long for nothing 🤣 I live out in a very rural area and there aren't any open mic nights available to play at. So they're hard to find.
This weekend is a holiday weekend and I live on a lake. So maybe I'll bring my guitar to a campfire to play at a party. The more everyone drinks, the better I'll sound. So I'll wait till everyone has had a few before I break out the guitar 😆
After 15 seconds I became your fan! What a load of genuine and generous advice! Thanks so much for doing this!
I appreciate that and really glad this helped!
As a musician that has had multiple restarts in different areas of the country and 10+ years of performing and a well established business in solo acoustic music, this guide will work 100% of the time given you put the work in to build the talent to a certain point. If it’s not working immediately don’t get discouraged, just keep learning!
Thank you brother, and I'm glad to hear you're out there doing it!
EXCELLENT tips. It took me years to figure out the part about adapting the key of the song to your voice. Your example of what you do with "Peace Of Mind" was perfect.
Yeah man, it’s a balance between the key that works for your voice and what sounds good on guitar
This is gold. Thank you SO much for so generously sharing all your knowledge. Not a lot of solo act tips like these out there. I'm gonna watch all your videos.
Thank you for watching and really glad this helped!
I've been building up some songs recently to branch out as a solo acoustic act and really appreciate the honest and no nonsense advice here. As far as image goes, I'm your doppleganger form the North, so I'm good there lol 😂😂
🙏🏻🤘
You really are the best teacher on UA-cam that I have found, and I've been watching and learning by UA-cam for years, always trying to find something new. I think I prefer to learn from you for a couple reasons, one, you're really good obviously, but I think more importantly is that you come across in such away that I feel trust in you if that makes sense idk, it's like we are great friends even though we've never met just because of the way you talk to all of us like we are equal and never talk down to us,ya know? Keep it up brother, been watching a couple years and will always
Dude, I appreciate that. We're all in this together and all learn from one another!
Excellent info. I’ve been doing the solo acoustic thing for a while now. For any beginners watching this and reading the comments, pay attention to this video. He’s dead on.
Thank you and glad to see this helping folks. I'm going to be playing through the EV Evolve 50M system tonight for the first time...I'll have that on here soon
Great information Jason. This was really helpful and encouraging..
Thanks and hope to see you around. I'm just getting back to playing out again and this was very helpful.
Congrats, Jason! Great, informative video! I am moving back to the US in the near future and I will be following your footsteps as much as I can. My main interests are Beatles, Sinatra and Nat King Cole... Let's see what happens! All the best, and happy holidays!
Awesome to hear that and glad this helped!
This is fantastic Jason. 👍 Its clear to see how much hard work you put into this video. Your channel is a wealth of knowledge for musicians looking to take the leap into playing live and I would (and have) highly recommend it to anyone. 🤘 And your positivity is infectious. 💪🏻 Thank you.
I appreciate the kind words...it took me a while to make this! But really glad to see that it's helping. It's such a cool and rewarding thing to be up there playing shows and getting paid and I want to see folks take those steps to get started.
I just watch this video unintentionally, and I found the content is very good. Thank you very much for sharing such precious materials that I have never thought before. I am not a musician, just a guitar hobby. Great video Jason. Cheers from Indonesia.
Thank you, I appreciate that 🙏
You are an example to us. Image? You take care of yourself! Those guns!!! Compliments totally whatever genre or musical artistry you project. It’s inspiring? Your videos here. Just breaking them down to bite sized chunks, how you do it, it’s a gold mine for us. And I 🙏🏽 thank you. God bless you and keep on rockin.

Fantastic content! I have my first solo acoustic gig coming up this Saturday and have found your videos to be extremely helpful in my preparation. Looking forward to making this a regular thing. \m/
Awesome and good luck on your gig...this is going to be addicting! You're going to want to play more!
How did it go? Are you cònsistently out there?

Thanks for this. Lots of great info and it’s gratifying to know that I’m doing what works. Looking forward to exploring the other vids on your channel.

Awesome video Jason! I've been waiting for this one since you mentioned it a while back. I did my first live gig last weekend, but I still have a long way to go. Thanks for doing what you do brother...these videos really help.
Man, congrats on your first live gig!! It’s awesome to know you’re up there doing it! And hope these tips come in handy!
Thanks so much Jason. This is awesome. Good roadmap to plan the journey…..you’re the best mate!
Thank you and it's awesome to see you starting!
Spot on Jason about Key Progression to sing comfortably and have the Audience Love you!
I have always used the highest note of the song I want to perform to figure out what Key is best.
Doing it for 45 Years! Always works.
🎸
Yeah, and that keeps us from straining and blowing out our voice during the first set! It's awesome that you've been doing this for so long!
Great videos. Have been taking a lot of notes. I live in a small town and it’s touristy during the summer. I can’t believe how many people give $$ to a solo guitarist who isn’t really all that good (yes, I am making a judgement). Then it dawned on me that they don’t care about improving their craft because they are hauling in over $100 a day for playing a few hours. Then I saw your videos and I was blown away. You are a man who knows his craft. You are always improving and always teaching others. You inspired me to play this summer but instead of collecting a 100 a day for myself, all donations will go to helping people financially in my community. Thank you again.
Thank you, I'm glad this helped and that's a noble thing you're doing!
Priceless information!! Thank you so much for sharing!!❤❤
I'm glad this helped!
great job on this Jason -- this is all great advice!
Thank you and glad this helps!
Very well done sir! I appreciate your efforts to help folks get started playing live.

Bravo brother thank you for sharing this video with the world, my notebook is full and I will definitely save this video as a future reference for my many musical friends who are in need of a direction ❤
Awesome and it’s great that you’re getting out there!!
So good Jason - thank YOU and g'day from Australia! The advice on really learning the 5 songs, transposing the songs to fit your best voice, open mic experience is just SO important but often ignored! Loved this! :)
Thank you, brother! Yeah, starting with those basics can really save someone from a lot of frustrations!
@@jasonstallworth No worries - appreciate the effort you go to with this great content! The actual performance footage is so valuable too - many solo artists seem to have a LOT of pictures of their gear, and upcoming gig dates, but not actual footage of how they look or sound!
@@mattrispinmusic2893 Matt! Nice to see a fellow aussie watching Jason's video! What city are you from? I live in Melbourne :D
This is a fantastic video! Been working years to get to this point. Definitely picked up some tips. I too like the look and sound of the traditional PA system, but you're right it's a lot of setup and take down, but man does it look cool. Rock on and thank you!!!
Glad to hear this helped! I'm still on the fence but getting closer to making that change
This is a wealth of information! Thanks. I can’t wait to get started.
Really glad to hear this helped!

Wow Jason you really helped me see more unto live playing ...my set list ..gear , Platform media something new I never thought about ...now I won't be blind sided thus video you made gave me confidence enthusiasm and passion for the music especially how.you state treating your hobby as a business , alot of value information and how to , moving from bedroom dreaming . I've been playing in bands and solo for years. Great video my man in giving some experienced advice to newcomers! Awesome!
Thank you and great to hear that you're still out there doing it!
I appreciate your clear and systematic layout of steps to snagging gigs. A few comments, appreciate your response
1. Open Mics as “auditions” for gigs, especially at the same venue. I’m in a duo and we regularly attend 3/wk
a. Time: 2 song/10 minute limit
b. In-House Gear: No DI box for instruments or any personal gear, even though most lack the gear capability to present ourselves/sound in the best possible fashion
1. Been accused of not understanding purpose of open mics, no time to cater to each performance, all acts end up
sounding the same.
2. Monitor wedges-often way too loud, boomy
c. Want originals, not covers
2. Gig Inquires
a. Need to be made 6-9 months out
b. 90+% go unanswered even with EPK link to website/social media.
c. DIY bookings; some success, a venue provides the space, we do the advertising, bring our own gear, money collection
1. Join with 2-3 other acts, split proceeds, usually for exposure/networking, not making money
Great questions. I'll start by saying don't overthink this.
The open mic limitations really depend on the venue and who's hosting. But if you can use that 10 minutes and just nail one cover song, or even an original, and have someone video that, you now have something to share with other venues to get gigs. Just do your best with what you have or what you're presented with; don't let that hold you back. Because if you can sound great with minimal (or not ideal) gear, you're going to sound even more awesome with your own gear.
There's no time limit for gig inquiries. Sure, some will be booked out for several months or even a year. But one tactic you can use is to let them know to call you when a musician calls out sick. That's a great way to get your foot in the door. And yes, you can expect many unanswered emails. You just have to keep gently pushing without getting upset or taking it personal.
As far as the non paying venues, that might even be a better place to get video footage to promote to other venues. You've got more freedom.
Very good video, awesome explanation and tips, greatly appreciated!
Thank you, I’m glad this helped! I also recently started using the Electro-Voice Evolve 50M column system here: ua-cam.com/video/PwKvC6dMITE/v-deo.html
Well done! I had already started growing my song list and playing open mics, so it was nice to know that I 'm headed in the right direction! You provided a lot of useful advice. Many thanks brother!
It's so cool to hear that you've already started the process! It's such a great journey getting out there and playing at different places!

Hi Jason, Thanks for putting up video's like this. Its giving me the Motivation to start recording my own music and get a plan in place to start going to open Mic Nights. Hopefully to get started on new videos this weekend 😌
Dude, I'm glad to hear this helped. Yes, put together that plan and get out there! It's so rewarding once you start playing these gigs.
Thanks Jason. Hopefully be out playing soon. Keep up the good work with your videos. 👌
Thank you so much for sharing this valuable information. It's very nice of you to include so many topics and pointers. I've been playing guitar and singing for over 50 years and have only recently considered sitting in on an open mic. My main goal is to break apart the stage-fright that has hobbled me for as long as i can remember. Your video provides a lot of help in that area by highlighting the areas of preparation for a successful solo outing. Thank you so much for that.
I’m glad this helped and yes, definitely start going to an open mic and you’ll meet some cool folks!
Great video Jason. Thank you so much. Greetings.
You're welcome and glad this helped!
Thanks Jason. Great information and right when I need it.
🙏🏻🤘
This was a fantastic video. Keep it up!
🙏
Hey Jason, thanks for great advice and insights. Bless you Bro!
Awesome to hear that and thanks for watching!
Thanks for the video Jason! All good information and there aren’t a lot like it!
🙏
Great stuff again man. I use a TC helicon "Play Acoustic" pedal. It processes the vocals and the guitar, it's a great tool. On the subject of portable PA , the other positive is you don't need a monitor. Your advice is great and you put it across really well! Most of my stuff is Scottish Folk but I've strayed over the years into pop and country, it takes a life of its own. Originally in the 70s I was a punk. 😂🏴🇺🇦
I'm definitely considering a portable system, and soon! Scottish Folk is such a cool style! But I totally get doing more pop and country...especially if that's what the crowd is used to. But hopefully you're throwing in some Scottish Folk songs here and there!
Not only am I gonna go to open mic nights at my local bar but I'm gonna do some traveling and try to perform in different states too.
That's a great strategy!
Another great video, Jason! You are paying forward very valuable information for fledgling musicians! Even experienced ones, such as myself!
One thing I need to do is bring extra cables. I’ve had moments where a mic cable connection wasn’t great. Had to wiggle the end of it going into my mic. Or, like you said, don’t buy cheap cables!
I have a UA-cam demo video (which needs updating, big time) and I provide venue GMs/owners a link to on my Biz Card along with an attachment of my music bio, and sample song list.
Thanks again, dude! Keep on truck’in!
Yeah dude, extra XLR and instrument (at least one of each) is a must! And I really like the Pro Co cables. I haven't had any issues with those.
Thanks Jason...Very comprehensive.
You're welcome and glad this helped!
Thank you 🙏 Great and thorough information.
🙏
Good on you Jason. Thanks for sharing your advice mate.
🙏🏻
Very good , in depth information even for seasoned musicians wanting to make the jump to gouging or those already but want to refine their craft. Thanks brother. Will need to check you out in Tampa some time
Dude, let me know if you come out to a show...will definitely have a beer with you
I was excited to find this presentation and so I grabbed a coffee and settled in to soak this stuff up. What did I come away with?
"Go and spend as much as possible at Sweetwater"
You are _not_ gonna buy talent
A gig is a commitment and a responibility and _anything_ can fail/get lost/get stolen
People out-grow equipment, nothing wrong with buying used
How about backups? I _always_ have _TWO_ of everything and in fact, my floor-pedal, I have SIX of them.
I find it incredible that very few guitarists are aware of the Variax (Line6). The acoustic emulation, straight to the PA sounds at least as good as any acoustic fitted with piezos.
And then there are all kinds of other emulations and alternative tunings that are switch-selectable.
I happen to be a professional electronics/software engineer who can‘t resist tearing gear apart. Long story short, don‘t be fooled by brand-name horse doo-doo.
I'm with you on the gear and I really try to minimize that aspect (I believe I mentioned that during the gear section, which was a small part of the video...most of this is about prep for folks who want to get started).
I actually just got the EV Evolve 50M system which really simplified my setup: ua-cam.com/video/PwKvC6dMITE/v-deo.html
Really impressive. Thank you.
🙏🤘
You seem like such a likable person and I learnt a lot!
I appreciate that 🙏🏻
Great video!

Jason, I love doing f'ed up songs on a solo gig. Songs people forgot about.
"Hungery like the wolf"
"Little red corvette" mike Zitto version.
"Life in the fast lane"
"Ruby don't take your love to town"
Love that stuff. Get video bro 👍
🤘🙏🏻
This was a very good and informative video.
Thank you an glad this helped!
Hey Jason, great video. Lot of good tips. I have been playing solo for a few years now. Mostly ‘trop rock’ stuff. Happy hours are my specialty. For gear I really try to keep it as simple as possible. I play a Martin OM28e with 2 Bose S1 Pros. No mixing board required. Good enough for a smallish pub. My pet peev at an open mic night is when players get up….and they haven’t tuned up their guitar yet! Seriously! My other suggestion , at an open mic, only one original song. People like to sing along and have a few drinks, bar managers like to see that. If you play a set of original tunes, you will almost never get hired by that bar. The sad truth is, your band will be judged by the house bar and food sales at the end of the night. Bills need to be paid and you will need to earn your keep. I have seen jazz bands that the musicians had doctorates in music, they were killer. But their audience would just savour a coffee for the entire evening…they went broke. Just my two bits. Cheers Brother!
Yeah you're right about open mics. If the intent is to use open mics to get gigs, play the covers that you'd play at a gig. If that's not the intent, you can play all the originals you want.
That's the downside to these gigs (what you mentioned about great musicians). I think guitar players can sometimes get caught up playing for other guitar players. At the gigs, the majority of people aren't musicians and most don't care what you can pull off. So there's a fine balance between showing your talent while keeping yourself (and music) relatable. Good stuff!
Thanks Jason. Some great advice here
🙏
Great help to me, thanks man! Your a real pro, Sweetwater should hire you!
Thank you and really glad to hear this helped!! I really want to see musicians get out there and play live!
Thank You Jason.

now this video- is gonna be helpful!!! i havent watched it yet - but i know your content and its gonna be very helpful -- ive been trying to build solo piano playing gig. Thanks!!! been long waiting for
Oh, that's awesome that you're going solo with piano...so much you can do with that!
@@jasonstallworth any tips on cold calling places. I just get the runaround or never contacted back
@@aria.vega5 I share some more tips for that towards the end of the video (last section). But you really have to keep following up and making sure that you're sending them a link to a video that's of good quality and it's one of your best performances (even if that performance is from an open mic)
Am happy to hear your Ideas,am as well live solo performer
🙏🏻
Such good advice 👌

Fantastic, video.

Great video!! I'm just starting out...I've played small halls and bars....getting my feet wet....Great advice here!!
It's awesome that you're playing live gigs! And it doesn't matter how small or large (some of the venues I play are small), you're out there doing it and getting the experience!
The gear....LISTEN to what he is saying! You can go cheap, then have to sell it for a fraction of what you paid for it to buy what you should have bought to begin with. That Shure Beta 58 is the right mic. He did not mention the Electrovoice Evolve PA system. It is PERFECT for a solo gig. It's light, powerful, and sounds excellent. Has an on board mixer so you don't have to buy one, on board effects, and you don't need a DI box to plug in. I show up to a gig with that Evolve system, guitar, mic, and cords. Set up and tear down in 5 minutes. Easy peasy. Another great video, Jason.

Great how to video

great job jason, very enthusiastic ,maken me want to learn more songs and check this out. im retired so i have the time. thank you
This is a really cool thing to get into so I encourage you to get out there and do it!
I ended up in the northern backwoods bar that had an open mic night. The performers lack personality , playability with some , forgetting words with some all mix in with better musicians.
I mentioned to a local the performers are off I see , he replied: we all don’t care if they are bad or great because we’re all hear to socialize , drink & support everyone who walks on stage for our background music ..
Weeks later I’m in smoking room with someone who’s complaining the performer was bad so I said to him • do you play guitar and he said yes I do • then I said then go home get it your guitar and get onstage so I can hear perfection. He gets up , looks at me and then leaves and never returns.
Open mic isn’t a paid event But you do really good they will have you comeback and then pay you for your time but bars only pay at bar closing time , I’m against that..
Sounds like a strange place. The open mics around here have some talented performers. Sure, some just do it for fun.
And most open mics don’t pay anything but will usually give performers a free beer or discounted tab.
This video is inspirational
Thank you and glad this helped!
Really good video! I recommend anyone starting out looking into the Boss VE-8 acoustic singer pedal. It's a great 1-stop processor for vocals and guitar and even includes a built in looper pedal (though I choose to use my separate Boss RC-5 for that instead.)
🤘🙏🏻
I have a street cube, love it. I use a wireless mic and wireless for my guitar, that eliminates the mic stand and cables. I have cables for backup. Great video.
That can work to for smaller places
The rolling gear bag is a great idea.
Well this is great info Jason I need to start going out to more solo gigs good or bad I remember performing in front of one of my college music classes several years ago and I tried to sing even though I can't I decided why not just try it but the class really liked it I was the only one to perform what a great feeling 👍🆒
Yeah, you see that you have it in you! You've just got to build on that!
Couldn’t be shared at a better time!
🤘
lol I'm also learning Peace of Mind by Boston, love that song.
Such a cool song! Crazy, but I just did an acoustic cover of Taylor Dayne's Tell It To My Heart last night. I mix in a lot of the 80s rock with some 80s pop
Great job as usual brother. Wish I could sing like you bro. I'm just destined to be a lowly guitar player lol
Man, I encourage you to start using your voice each day! I'm by no means a natural singer but once you get serious with practicing and using your voice you will be amazed at what comes out! More to come on this!
Good stuff Jason. I need to get a system to perform out on my own. Like I’ve told you before I play in a duo but the speaker system is the other guys. Maybe Santa will hook me up with one of those array systems.
Yeah, I'm seriously considering that Bose system. Many of my performing friends have one, and another good friend just bought the JBL version. I've been setting up for what could be a full band and it's a bit tiring!
@@jasonstallworth We use two of those tower arrays in our duo but sometimes only use one and it’s so easy compared to lugging multiple speakers and stands. I’d love to get one.
