  • First released over 2000 years ago, Arc System Works' PS2/Dreamcast title 'Guilty Gear X' took the series to a whole new level. More characters, features, and stages helped elevate this game from a potential cash-grab into a worthy sequel!
I wanted to uncover the history of this game and learn a bit about how it got made, how it functions, and how its legacy shaped up after launch, so that's what we're here to do.
    MUSIC:
Blue Water Blue Sky - Guilty Gear X
    Feel A Fear - Guilty Gear X
Bloodstained Linage - Guilty Gear X
A Solitide That Asks Nothing In Return - Guilty Gear X
Primal Light - Guilty Gear X

You kind of brush off the criticism that the stages were distracting; as an avid Guilty Gear X fan being that I’ve run several tournaments for this game, I can confirm that if any one stage is distracting, it’s Nirvana. The flickering on the demon in the background is kind of insane once you notice it.
Great vid on a Guilty Gear game that really deserves a lot more praise from the community!

    A list of fun facts:
The name "Guilty Gear 2" was never considered the actual name even when it was announced, it was a marketing trick by Sammy. On the devs side we know it was always gonna be called Guilty Gear X because the artwork used in the reveal of the game was designed to spell out "G" & "X" according to Daisuke who drew the artwork (Source: artworks of guilty gear x 2000-2007 book)
There is also footage of an early development build trailer, which you should be able to find with "guilty gear x VHS tumblr Sol Radguy" which could be from the said show you were talking about
In a different interview Daisuke did for his highschool, he stated that the Queen song was "Dont Stop Me Now" which he heard during his early years living in South Africa (sadly the Internet Archive & Wayback machine are down due to hacks, so its not accessable so I cant check the article name even if I have the link saved)
In the 10th Memorial Book Daisuke an interview said the reason the Arcade version & the homeports of GGX had different OSTs is because ironically the Naomi system had too little memory as the game was made for the 128mb ROM carts, before the GD-Discs that the Dreamcast uses became an option (this is why GGXX has CD quality Audio as there they switched to GD-Discs with 1GB of space)
Roman Cancel originally was called "Cosmetic Galaxy" lol (Source:『GUILTY GEAR(ギルティギア)』20周年イベント開催。歴代作品の思い出を石渡太輔さんらが振り返る interview with Dengeki Online)
The Storymode is in the Japanese PS2 release, Guilty Gear X Plus (this version also had combo trials + added Justice & Kliff) and before Xrd the timelines & lore guides were found in the books (for example Guilty Gear X Slash Encyclopedia & Guilty Gear X Drafting Artworks for GGX specifically)
In some of the footage you can see green blood, thats censorship that only appears in the PC port of the game for some reason

It's sad that most people will never know about the Heavy Rock versions of the character themes, only hearing the X2 versions.
Some songs take you on a rollercoaster like Testament and Venom's. Even May's theme is thrashing out here 😂

Is that where the anime cutscenes came from!? I ask because I remember watching Cinematech on G4TV some time after recieving my barebones PS2 copy (also discovering that channel later) and was teased by that which played some no-context clips where Dizzy is having some kind of powerchage...gasm? IDK there was no context but it frustrated me to no end as Cinematech was just a clip show without any info and this was the pre-youtube early 00s.
Only other time on G4 where Guilty Gear was mentioned was a really crappy review on Judgment Day ua-cam.com/video/ZjxiVeQbTks/v-deo.htmlsi=IM2X_qnBHX0f493o

despite the game's unfortunate oversights leading to the monstrous fdc infinites and untechable otg abuse, i still think this game's contributions to the series are invaluable. a plethora of considerate mechanics, from guard bars to negative penalties, to the subtle stuff like gravity/untech/pushback, each with their respective scaling, all working to ensure the asylum doesn't fall apart with this crazy roster. maybe its shortcomings were needed to build some character too, as it no doubt led to the addition of the iconic bursts.
not to mention the unfuckwithable character kits like venom or zato 🔥🔥🔥
as for ggx's anemic content, you still had some pretty cool unlockables in this game. getting far enough in survival would unlock GG mode for the roster, something pretty similar to EX mode, albeit with varying degrees of changes per char. the coolest one has to be this deranged early version of robo ky for gg mode ky

They actually did do a story mode in a later revision called Guilty Gear X Plus. Unfortunately it was released in Japan only. The only way I could watch the story cutscenes was because someone has translated them on youtube.
I hope that someday we will get a translated rerelease of Guilty Gear X Plus with translated story mode. It really helps with the game's appeal and would give it something to stand out against the rest of the series.

The ps2 japanese only X Plus which added a story mode with branching options for all characters and the 1.5 arcade version which closes the gap between this game and x2( think the rom is still available somewhere, its fun)

I find it funny that you chose Anji to be the example of a character who makes frequent reappearances when he hadn't appeared in any GG game between X2 and Strive outside of a cameo in Xrd's story mode. Dizzy, Venom, or Johnny would've been a better example as they all not only appeared in Xrd, but also eventually made it to Strive; with Dizzy and Johnny even appearing in the pachinko game, and Dizzy also appearing in Overture's story mode.
Regardless, excellent video. It was cool to learn about X2's development history, as I've always wondered how the hell a busted game like The Missing Link got a sequel, let alone the excellent sprite upgrade. I also agree that X was one of the most important games in the franchise, which is why I find it especially weird why it never got an official re-release when games like Overture and Isuka did.

I feel that these days, GGX is unfortunately the GG that has the least reason as to why someone would play it out of any GG game (barring games that weren't definitive revisions).
    GG1 is comedically unbalanced.
+R has the biggest roster of the older games and is the best mechanically out of the older games (GG1, X and X2.
    Isuka is X2 #Reload, but 4 player.
    GG2 is an RTS moba.
    Judgement is a beat'em up.
Rev2 is simpler than X2, yet still fun and has plenty of its own sauce.
The same applies to Strive, along with being the newest and most popular game in the series.
X has... the original versions of a lot of character tracks that would appear in X2 (tbh, and it could be a byproduct of playing +R first, but I much prefer the X2 versions). And it's the first game w/a story mode... In Japan only, and doesn't have a fan patch. And like you and critics at the time said, w/little to no content, it makes GGX sorta the odd one out in a way, and it's not helped by the fact that it's the only mainline GG w/o any kind of modern release.
It's def an improvement over the first and I do like the characters it introduced. It also had Fatal Duel (a banger) and that cool promotional vid.
Tl;dr of a too long, unfocused comment, GGX kinda cool, but ain't much reason to play it compared to 99% of the series.

@@sg79453 To each his own on the soundtrack. I think the X2 versions are lower in quality, both artistically and sonically, with only a very short list I'd say I choose over the X1 versions(Sol and Faust). And all of them sound like they were played through a walkie talkie.
The version of X that everyone should play at least once is 1.5, with the weird changes that didn't stick around, like Potemkin being able to roll on the ground after being knocked down ala Blazblue.

This was my intro to Guilty Gear and I loved it, but Guilty Gear XX is my favorite of this era, especially in introducing so much extra content and story modes, plus the intro of I-No and Slayer. Still, this definitely was the game that began Guilty Gear’s core identity, and I’m glad more people are discovering it (kinda like Darkstalkers). People saying Guilty Gear was only ever successful after ArcSys developed DBFZ are just a bunch of late-adopters looking to justify their ignorance.

I know somebody else already mentioned this before but it needs to be said the older guilty gear soundtracks and even the ones from the XRD games minus the small vocal themes, are better then Strive's themes. There was something magical about the themes for each character having a distinctive feel and vibe that you can understand them just by listening to their theme now it's just told to you through their theme in strive not giving you the same feeling of yeah I know this character. Plus the instruments while it is still rock focused it's not as varied as it was in the older games and instead it's more in your face. Also in the case of X2/Accent Core R, I Miss A lot of the extra content as well as an actual story mode that lets you fight instead of what happened in the future of the series where all you do is you sit down and watch 2 hours worth of cut scenes with no fighting. Damn near had me and my friends sit down and watch the entire plot of strive with snacks because my God it was a pain. I do appreciate X for what it did and for what it managed to do for the series going forward and I can say this at least guilty gear ended on a good note for a good chunk of the characters which is what I can't say for the other arcsys fighting game series that ended on a disappointing note and then tried to give us more content through a mobile game that bombed almost immediately......Glares at Blazblue.

X is the first Guilty Gear I played (via an emulator at my college) after hearing about the series for a good while (Videos about the Jack-o pose meme or Leon Massey's Missing Link video). For me the choc was when Dust was it's own button in Accent Core (who was also put on the college emulator eventually, because they could finally run it).
These days, the emulator is back to its old version who uses GGX, after some years of doing a circuit at primary schools and being kept in the college workshop (And a weird slowed down version of SF3 3rd Strike, not like "is it how 50 hertz felt for pal territories" more like "it must be bugged", mainly because other european versions of the games on the emulator like Vampire Savior runned quite well).
I initially didn't like the sprites of the X/XX era because in my head "if it ain't pixel art I could recreate easily, it doesn't count. It's closer to illustrations", or probably something else, idk. What's important is that I appreciate even more the sprites of the X/XX era these days.
Being a casual, Potemkin being bad wasn't obvious for me (got beaten a lot by him the first times I played, there was even crashes). I never could beat Testament in the arcade ladder, so I unlocked them and Dizzy via the survival mode.
Knowing that it was Max Dood's entry point in Guilty Gear is quite cute for me. And it not being available on Steam like it's updates feels sad to me.
I'm really hyped for the Switch release of Strive.

I don't remember whether it was the GBA version of this game, or the PS1 original that introduced me to the series, it was a long time ago and my memory is hazy, but regardless, GGX Advance was one of my very first entries in the series, and it has a 3 on 3 Vs mode! And the gameplay is pretty intact, all the moves are there!
There was just a not-so-small caveat... The single-player kinda sucked because the CPU is *Extremely Stupid!* Like, they hardly ever even TRY to hit you! Even on the highest difficulty they're a joke! And well, it being a GBA game made it so that playing it with someone else was most likely not gonna happen... Also, I must admit, the presentation does leave a bit to be desired, but I'll chalk that up to it being a pretty early GBA title, and using a rather small cartridge (only 4 megs)
Arguably, a better portable version of GGX is Guilty Gear Petit 2 on the WonderSwan, it doesn't have all the characters, but it has a lot more personality to it than the GBA port, and it does have an unique character to boot! But I'm glad the GBA version existed, and that it was there for me! I've since played the game on PS2 and I REALLY Like it there too!
