Impressive and super detailed. How much would this work have cost, for both parts and labor, ballpark? Thanks!
I'm not sure his name is ballpark.
Would it be possible to simply bypass the speed control? Then just wire in an on/off switch or maybe a variable speed switch?
Yes. Many people buy cheap PWM controllers to get variable speed control and with more efficiency than the resistor. I personally wouldn't do this repair as long as adding a PWM instead was an option.
how would you bypass that?\
i am trying to do that now

Assuming your full speed still works, you just leave it there and then install something like this www.amazon.com/Controller-DC10-55V-Forward-Brake-Reverse-Adjustable-Potentiometer/dp/B087QDRWBP
between the battery and the motor.
Can some one tell me if this 12v trolling motor if it can take up to 16.8 volts safely with out burning up from over voltage ?? I’m planing to build a lithium battery pack and the voltage will range from 12 volt to 16.8 volts!! I haven’t been able to find this info any where? Please help?
Only up to 13.7 or it will fry it
I just changed the speed controler now the motor is running backwards
Switch the power cables, you have put live and negative in the wrong way round
