It makes me so glad I was taught at boarding school in 1966 age 11 how to use woodwork machines and metalwork too. I gather kids today don't get practical lessons like that these days.

I made my first lathe back in 1974. I had two horizontal drill stands clamped to a cement stair panel, One held an old black and Decker drill and the other held an old chuck, which was my dead center. I used a brass fitting which I shaped to be the live center bit. I used a lump of timber too act as my chisel support and the chisels were all made form old metal files. I would turn nose cones from balsa wood for my model rockets. Later my father got hold of an old Knitting machine base and I used that for the base of the lathe and mounted the horizontal drill stands on to the frame and one on the carriage which was my dead center. Fun times.

I liked it. It's the real deal.
Application of excess glu, dropping stuff and the best was the wood piece jumping out.
    All natural and original.
Some of the other videos I watch are so perfect and sometimes too perfect.
    Good job

.An effective practical low cost idea. Thanks for sharing.Your work jumped out dangerously because you did not drill a countersink hole with a centre drill so that the tailstock centre can go in further to lock your wood. Remember to oil the tailstock centre where it contacts the wood. It does help. Periodically readjust your tailstock as the vibrations can loosen the the contact at the tailstock. Your tool resr should be adjustable to be as close to the wood as practical to reduce vibrations

Please don't! There are so many things wrong with this build its hard to know where to begin. The main two glaring mistakes are obvious! The two points do not align. The rest bench is far too far away from his work which can be dangerous. When he tightened the block into the two points the end without the drill moved upwards making the alignment even worse! The end needs to be beefed up so that it cannot move. I could go on about the abuse of his tools too but I think you get my drift. Cheers.

Só nao gostei q o ponto móvel ficou solto. Por isso a peça se esquivou. Aconselho- te a fszer duas ranhuras embaixo do corpo do torno e fixar duas chapinhas de madeira, pro carrinho móvel nao subir.

Others have mentioned the fact that the tool rest is too far from the work. Another thing: if you must touch the spinning stock (feeling for smoothness, sanding, oiling...) always do it in back, never on top or in front. Imagine your fingers getting caught and jammed in the tool rest. (Which is virtually guaranteed with that big gap.) Always be aware that a lathe is one of the worst tools in the shop for grabbing hold of body parts and destroying them. Always come at it with preventing that as Step 1.

I'd have to agree with those below. The end opposite the drill needs to have at the least a triangular brace. The wood brace holding your pivot bends out away from the piece when you are tightening your pivot rod. This will add excess wabble since your center end is not securely fixed. It will also put excess stress on your screws securing this upright and cause it to lose integrity.
