It makes me so glad I was taught at boarding school in 1966 age 11 how to use woodwork machines and metalwork too. I gather kids today don't get practical lessons like that these days.
I made my first lathe back in 1974. I had two horizontal drill stands clamped to a cement stair panel, One held an old black and Decker drill and the other held an old chuck, which was my dead center. I used a brass fitting which I shaped to be the live center bit. I used a lump of timber too act as my chisel support and the chisels were all made form old metal files. I would turn nose cones from balsa wood for my model rockets. Later my father got hold of an old Knitting machine base and I used that for the base of the lathe and mounted the horizontal drill stands on to the frame and one on the carriage which was my dead center. Fun times.
Oh, the good old time, sweet memory!
I liked it. It's the real deal.
Application of excess glu, dropping stuff and the best was the wood piece jumping out.
All natural and original.
Some of the other videos I watch are so perfect and sometimes too perfect.
Good job

.An effective practical low cost idea. Thanks for sharing.Your work jumped out dangerously because you did not drill a countersink hole with a centre drill so that the tailstock centre can go in further to lock your wood. Remember to oil the tailstock centre where it contacts the wood. It does help. Periodically readjust your tailstock as the vibrations can loosen the the contact at the tailstock. Your tool resr should be adjustable to be as close to the wood as practical to reduce vibrations
Good Job. Thanks for sharing.
This is one of my favorites, but i see room for improvements. This is the first that I will try. Some of the vids are more complicated and expensive than just going out and buying the tool.
Hi, Could you recommend me please a tutoriel to make a homemade wood lathe, big enough to use it to create a wooden mannequin for sewing? Thank you forward for it. Have a gr8 day.
@@dacyana115: Did U say sewing? U want life like parts?
Sy suka dgn cara2 simpel kaya gini buat pelajaran baru good good deh
....Thank You for posting this....
parabéns sem disfarces mostrando erros ocasionais e imprevistos👏👏👏👏👏
exelente video abrazo desde ARGENTINA
Nice one! Very easy to build and no special parts needed. Thank you!
Buen trabajo amigo,he aprendido mucho con Ud. Gracias desde Cordoba(España). Saludos
Definitely trying this
Please don't! There are so many things wrong with this build its hard to know where to begin. The main two glaring mistakes are obvious! The two points do not align. The rest bench is far too far away from his work which can be dangerous. When he tightened the block into the two points the end without the drill moved upwards making the alignment even worse! The end needs to be beefed up so that it cannot move. I could go on about the abuse of his tools too but I think you get my drift. Cheers.
Very nice👌a little reinforcement of the chuck jaw and it will have more gripping power to hold. 😊
Thank you .
I want to chuck jaw.
@@tengucraft I think Matthias Wandell made a chuck jaw on his channel
Hi Mahendra Tiwari, Could you recommend me please a tutoriel to make a homemade wood lathe, big enough to use it to create a wooden mannequin for sewing? Thank you forward for it. Have a gr8 day.
I don't believe I'll ever need a file handle so badly as to go thru all of this, but it was certainly entertaining! Nothing dissuaded him...he just kept right on truckin like a man on a mission with nothing but the most basic of tools. Gotta love it! Bravo!
Hi MHFROX, I agree with your post, you are right. Could you recommend me please a tutoriel (in english, or in french) to make a homemade wood lathe, big enough to use it to create a wooden mannequin for sewing? Thank you forward for it. Have a gr8 day.
Gostei meu amigo. parabéns
Well done. I'm sure you have improvements in mind, but it is a starting point for turning small wood parts.
Nb.
.
Muito bom o torno caseira
Thank you for sharing your knowledge.
Congratulation. good my friends
You is off the Best my friend.
simples,barato,prático e satisfatório,parabéns mestre
Muy buen aporte! Saludos!
move your tool rest so that it just clears the job a lot less chance of it flying out and gives more control

Gracias, Mercy, Thanks!
Good job with those tools!
In live it's this same. It's very good.
MUITO BOM GOSTEI
I like it. Came to a little bump in the road, fixed it, moved on.
Muito boas suas ideias , vou fazer um. Obrigado.
Só nao gostei q o ponto móvel ficou solto. Por isso a peça se esquivou. Aconselho- te a fszer duas ranhuras embaixo do corpo do torno e fixar duas chapinhas de madeira, pro carrinho móvel nao subir.
For the most part the wooden feed stock was a couple of down the length ripped 2 by 4s. Pretty clever use of materials, I'd say.
Muito bom mesmo
Muito bem ! Sr da terra do sol nascente.
Show !!
Excellent work !!! Just be carefull the wood doesn't get wet and twist !!! Good idea to cover the wood with 3 coats of paint or varnish to protect it from liquids !!
Genius! With simplex tools you made a perfect lathe.
Brilliant, very simple. I will try to one the same, thanks!!
ótimo muinto bom brother.
Thanks for the upload. I’m going to make one, but I won’t be using a drill as a power source. I’m going to use a bench grinder motor.👍👍👍
A 750-3200 variable speed drill is more effective in this case than any other fixed speed motor.
I like it. Very good.
Good gig, will really good to have an idea the dimensions of pieces!
You can calculate them based on the dimension of the drill. Using the drill dimension as a base.
He takes the basic measurements at the beginning. Use that as a guide.
I'm no expert at wood turning but just thought you might have took corner's off the wood before you started and seems like the tool rest was a bit far from the work and tailstock didn't seem very strong nice idea though
Molto interessante complimenti
very simple and nice to operate.
Others have mentioned the fact that the tool rest is too far from the work. Another thing: if you must touch the spinning stock (feeling for smoothness, sanding, oiling...) always do it in back, never on top or in front. Imagine your fingers getting caught and jammed in the tool rest. (Which is virtually guaranteed with that big gap.) Always be aware that a lathe is one of the worst tools in the shop for grabbing hold of body parts and destroying them. Always come at it with preventing that as Step 1.
I am so glad I watched this vid cuz I learned all the things what NOT to do although the idea is pretty good it needs refining for sure.
GRACIAS.
muito bom
Great effort. My greetings
I'd have to agree with those below. The end opposite the drill needs to have at the least a triangular brace. The wood brace holding your pivot bends out away from the piece when you are tightening your pivot rod. This will add excess wabble since your center end is not securely fixed. It will also put excess stress on your screws securing this upright and cause it to lose integrity.
i don't know much about lathe safety, but the project looked thought thru and done well. Also, the video flowed very well. Good job.

muy buen tuto
I have to try this! 😊👍👌
Simple, I am making this one
Super Coole Idee..
you are te best!
Crude bet, effective. Pretty Good Idea.
I love it man, i want to try making one...
Bravo!!! Complimenti!
Great thanks for sharing a brilliant idea merci l' ami :) :) :)

I think this is great, sure there are some slight bugs to work out, but that's how we got to CNC in the first place, I think?

I watched this video and listened to Herbioe Hancock play Flood ..... too sublime ]-) .......
Very good, but trying to trim a square shape was a BIG mistake. You should use a bench saw to remove the corners until it looks like an octagon. Then it should cut OK

thanks for video
Aí e top bão demais da conta 👏👏👏👍
Fantastic 🤘
I love your sweet video.
good lathe for small jobs, you need to reinforce the centre pivots and supports to avoid vibrations and the rest tool should be much close to the spinning piece (say 5 millimeters)for better control of chisel cheers..........

Excellent.
Good very creative. 👍
Hey just a tip. Try moving the right side in a little bit as you go it will wear down on that side
